The Horror House

The second Abel walked into the house with a wicked smirk and a pamphlet in his hand, I knew I was in trouble.

He had been in and out of the house for the last three days, avoiding doing anything on the list. According to Oliver, he had been having some problems with his parents at home and asked us not to talk about it.

"Oak Street's Haunted Mansion, you in?" Abel said, snapping me out of my thoughts. I glanced over my cup of hot chocolate at him, uninterested.

"I'm good." I replied, looking back down at my magazine. He pushed it out of the way and slapped the pamphlet, then a crumbled up copy of our list down in front of me.

"Spend the night in an abandoned place" He said aloud, pointing directly at the sentence on the list, looking pleased with himself.

"Not there." I mumbled, "Find somewhere else." He looked from the pamphlet then back to me.

"Oh, come on! What's wrong with this place? You could even drag Adrian and Lena along. I'm bringing Oli." I shook my head.

"You two have fun with that then. Let me know how it works out for you." He pulled me empty cup out of my hands and laid his on top of mine.

"You proved to me on Saturday that you could do anything if you put your mind to it, Olivia. Stop playing so innocent and scared. I know you can do this." I only stared at him, genuinely shocked by his words.

Was Abel Hendricks giving me a pep talk?

"It'll be for a night, Liv. It won't be that bad, I promise. The place isn't even really haunted." I snorted, pushing the pamphlet back in his direction.

"Lena said her brother didn't even last two minutes there, Abe. And he's almost a thirty year old man." I fought back, tucking a lock of my hair behind my ear as I waited for his response.

"He was just being dramatic." Abel reasoned, "Plus, if you get scared you've got Adrian to cling on to. I'm sure he'd love that." To my surprise, Abel's voice slowly grew emotionless.

"Fine." I grumbled, rubbing my temples so he'd think I'd have a headache and go away.

"Really?" He was shocked.

"Yeah. Now can I please read my magazine in peace?" He slipped the pamphlet into his pocket before reaching over and ruffling my hair. As he walked toward the hall, probably to find Oliver, I could hear him talking quietly to himself. What he said made my cheeks start to grow warm, relieved no one was in the room to see it.

"I should have just led with Adrian in the first place."

"Do you still have any of those unopened packs of underwear?" Lena asked, zipping up her suitcase slowly. I checked my dresser, shifting my PJ's into my other arm.

"Yeah, why?" I questioned. She gave me a suggestive smirk, kicking my bedroom door shut behind her as she bent over to pick up a sock.

"Because you might need them." She said quietly.

"Are you insinuating I'm going to pee my pants?" I asked, trying to act offended but failing miserably. I probably would pee my pants, and all three of the boys would have a field day with it.

"No, honey. I'm insinuating that you and Adrian might get it on." She whispered, careful not to talk too loud.

"Oh God, Lena. I am not going to have sex with Adrian with you guys and my brother in the same room." I groaned, setting my stuff in my small bag and zipping it up.

"So you would just push him away if he tried to make a move on you?" She questioned, giving me a skeptical look.

"Yeah." I whispered, "You know I love him, Le. But I can't just keep being someone that he only uses or talks to when he feels like it. I just can't be that girl."

I clung to Oliver's arm, my face hidden behind his shoulder as we walked into the building. We had handed the passes to the people out front and they had sent us back with a few rules on what to do and not do.

"Sis, your nails are digging into my arm." Oliver said, shaking me off. I saw Lena with her own hands wrapped around Adrian's arm, shielding her face with his back.

"You can come hide behind me, Liv." Abel said playfully a few feet away, offering me his arm, "I'd be okay with that." I saw Oliver's nose scrunch up in disgust at his best friends offer.

"I wouldn't. Dude, she's my sister." Abel shrugged.

"So?"

"So she's off fucking limits, all right?" I could feel the tension start to rise in the small space between my brother and Abel, and stepped in between them, slicing it as best as I could.

"Both of you just stop. She is right here and I can make my own decisions, Oliver." He glared at the both of us before walking ahead, earning a strange look out of Lena and Adrian as he passed them. Lena gave me a worried look, to which I only shrugged in response to.

"He's being a dick." Abel muttered beside me, shoving his hand into his pocket as he shook his head.

"He's being a brother, Abel." I replied, "If you had a sister, would you want your best friend trying to make a move on her?" He stared at me for a second, his green eyes bright in the dark room.

"Make a move? Liv, babe, that wasn't making a move. Not even close." He grabbed my forearm and stopped me so we were watching Adrian and Lena walk through the open front door at the end of the dimly lit hall. When I turned back to Abel his face was only inches from mine, his lips curved into his signature smirk.

"This, dear Olivia, is making a move." He closed the gap between us and acted as if he were about to kiss me before letting his lips touch my right cheek.

"Let's catch up to them." I said, clearing my throat once I had regained my composure.

"Kay." He responded, offering me his arm again. I took it hesitantly, letting him lead me down the hall until we were through the open door.

We found Adrian and Lena sitting in the middle of the room, both of them laughing at some inside joke. Oliver was sitting on the mattress across the room, unpacking a few of his things as he glanced up to meet my eyes.

"It's hot in here." Abel said, making his voice purposely whiny. I could see Lena look up at the same time I turned to find Abel unbutton his shirt and slide it off so he was only wearing a thin white tank top.

"Damn, Hendricks." Lena said, "You're actually kind of hot." I swear I saw Abel shoot me a look before he turned back to her and grinned.

"Thanks, Lena. You're not too bad yourself." He winked. She shook her head, looking disgusted. His wink must have ruined the moment for her.

"You need help?" Adrian asked Lena as she fought with the zipper on her suitcase. He was giving her a warm smile, his eyes lighting up in a way I'd never seen as she nodded.

Was. . . did Adrian like Lena? Had I been so obsessed with my own feelings that I didn't realize that my best friends were in love with each other?

"You okay?" Abel sat beside me, pulling his knees against his chest as he sent me a worried look.

"I'm fine." I lied, "Just tired, I guess." He seemed to accept my response and rested his head back against the wall, shutting his eyes.

"Abel?" I touched his arm gently as I spoke.

"Hmm?" He groaned.

"Am I naive?" His eyes fluttered open at the question, filled with confusion.

"Why would you ask that? Liv, are you sure you're okay?" I sent Adrian and Lena a quick glance over my shoulder, feeling my gut twist when I saw them laughing. Everything seemed to register in Abel's head once he saw them.

"No, Livvy. You aren't naive." He said, "Sometimes we're so blinded by the things we love that we can't see straight. That doesn't mean you're naive, it just means you're in love." I let my head fall against his shoulder, laying my hands on my churning stomach. My brother met my eyes again, giving me a sympathetic look.

I felt Abel rest his head on top of mine before he let out a long sigh. I knew all three of us were thinking the exact same thing.

This was going to be a long night.
