~49~ (Part one) The one with the hospitals and harsh words
~Liam~
Beep. Beep. Beep.
Ugh. That noise. All I wanted to do was curl into a ball and sleep but the monotonous beeping was beginning to annoy me.
I forced my eyes open for just a second, immediately regretting doing so. The next time, I opened them slowly so that the bright light didn't blind me the second time. Once my vision adjusted, I registered my surroundings. I was in a pink room, a very bright one at that. I lifted my head just a tiny little bit and saw an equally pink looking blanket covering me.
"Who are you?"
My head jerked at the sudden voice, sending me into a dizzy spell. Once my head stopped spinning, I looked to my right trying to find the source of the voice. It was a little girl, not more than six years old "Who are you?" she repeated.
"Who are you?" I asked back, trying to sit up.
"I asked you first." she said pointedly. She then had a thoughtful expression on her face "..Lilli." she said, crossing her arms
I let out a little groan, as I tried to sit up, but I couldn't pry off the blanket"What? Who told you that?" I asked, frowning "..who told you that's my name?"
She shook her head "No, it's my name." she said almost proudly "my name's Lilli."
"Oh."
"Your name's Lilli too?" she continued, looking shocked "..but you're a boy." she frowned "Lilli is a girl's name."
"No, my name is not Lilli." I said, finally sitting up properly "it is a stupid nickname my friends have me."
Why am I explaining this to a toddler?
"Hey! Lilli is not stupid." she protested like I had offended her "my mummy gave me this name. She said it's pretty."
I slapped my forehead "Why am doing this?" I muttered to myself
"Are you sick, Lilli?"
"Look kid, my name is not Lilli." I said, trying very hard to not lash out. It was not like I didn't like kids, but I (a) didn't know where I was (b) had a pounding headache and (c) was getting irritated. Having an argument with a child was the last thing on my mind.
Breathe. I took in a deep breath and sighed "Your name is not stupid Lilli. I'm sorry."
She flashed me a wide gap toothed grin "It's okay. My name is Lillica. But you can call me Lilli." she said shyly.
I blinked and couldn't help laughing. I didn't care about the fact that it aggravated my headache, I just couldn't help it. Maybe it was the fact I was laying in a hospital bed with no recollection of anything or the fact that I was in a pink room covered in a pink blanket.
"What's funny?" she asked, tilting her head to one side in visible confusion.
I shook my head, breathing heavily "Nothing. So, Lillica?"
"You can call me Lilli." she reminded me
"Right. Lilli." I nodded "..where am I?"
"In a hospital." she said, sucking on a lollipop. Where did that come from?
I almost slapped my forehead but stopped myself "A hospital?" I said, sarcastically "right.. But, which hospital is this?"
She thought for a moment, the lollipop stick dangling from her mouth. Did she have it with her all this time? "The hospital where my mommy works."
This time I didn't stop myself from slapping my forehead "No I mean--"
"Lilli! There you are!" I heard a woman exclaim and looked up just in time to see a woman in a doctors uniform walked in through the door and scooped the little girl in her arms
"I told you to stay in the next room, didn't I?" she scolded, seemingly not even noticing me
I cleared my throat slightly but that was enough to draw her attention. She stared at me for a second before finally snapping out of it "Oh good, you're awake. It's been an hour, we were so worried."
"I am-- wait, an hour?" I was surprised. I tried to recollect whatever happens that landed me here in the first place but that just caused my head to hurt "..have I lost my memory?"
She shook her head "No, don't worry. It's normal as you've been out for a while."
I nodded slowly "How did I get here?"
"Road accident. Well, not really because you just slightly grazed a motorcycle, apparently." she muttered "You hit your head pretty hard though. Caused a mild concussion."
I winced "Maybe that's why I have this killer headache. Are you sure I haven't lost my memory? I don't remember anything about the accident."
"Well.." she paused "you were drunk. So that could be the reason for a fuzzy memory."
"I was what?" I winced, this time from the headache "oh hel-"
"What did you drink?"
I stopped myself immediately, I'd almost forgotten about the little girl.
Seems like the doctor had forgotten too because she started coughing.
"What did you drink?" she repeated, looking genuinely intrigued.
Well, shit.
"Uhh." I trailed, looking unsurely at the doctor
"Pepsi." the doctor said, looking at her "lot's of pepsi. Now you know what happens when someone drinks a lot of pepsi, don't you?" she sounded so convincing that she even got me for a second "Now let's go." she said, grabbing her hand and then looking at me "I'll tell Kritika that her friends awake, but till then, please don't move around much."
I nodded slowly, gratefully lying back down and it helped reduce the headache.
I'll tell Kritika her friends awake..
I bolted upright, immediately regretting it. The headache started once again. But this time it wasn't alone.
Everything came rushing back. Last night.. The drinks.. The morning.. Seeing her.. The accident.
I groaned out loudly in frustration.
Liam, you idiot.
~Kritika~
"There you go, Santa." I joked as I finished fixing the piece of band aid on the little boy's forehead.
Turns out, the bus had been carrying pre schoolers who were on their way back home from a special Christmas eve day programme in their pre school. Quite unusual, but that's what it was. And apparently, there had been a costume party or something as we had a ward full of santa clauses and rudolphs.
The accident hadn't been severe but the shattered bus windows had injured quite a lot of the kids. The hospital was missing most of its staff so I had volunteered to help. Besides, the ward had been full of crying children. Half of them who were injured, and half of them who were plain scared. Dr. Victoria had been going crazy.
"Hey! Is that Hello Kitty?" a voice gasping accusingly caught my attention. The boy I had tended on before was glaring holes at the mirror in front of him as he inspected the blue Hello Kitty band aid on his forehead "Gross." I laughed secretly and that was until he began to try and peel it off
"Hey. Don't do that." I rushed to him and removed his hand from his forehead
"But, Hello Kitty is for girls." he complained
Seriously? You had'nt cried a single tear when you cut your forehead on glass a while ago and now you're whining about a Hello Kitty band aid? My conscience muttered.
I ignored it "Seriously? Who told you that? Hello Kitty is'nt for girls." I said, letting surprise seep into my voice "She's so Kawai! And she's British." I tried reasoning with him. Anything to have him keep it on.
"But I thought she was Japanese?" the boy questioned, finally stopping fiddling with the band aid.
I shook my head "She lives in London. Her name's Kitty White." who knew googling what seemed like absolute nonsense one day could be used the other? Here I am, narrating Hello Kitty facts to a four year old. "Besides she owns her own jet plane."
"Jet plane? Cool." the boy exclaimed, grinning "so it's not just for girls?"
"Most definitely not." I said just as I heard the ward door open with a loud crash "Kritika!"
"Hi Lilli." I laughed "where were you? And why are you panting?"
"I ran from mummy." she giggled
"Lillica.." I heard Dr. Victoria before she herselves appeared in view "how many times do I have to tell you to not run around? Mummy can't run around all day." she scolded, coughing softly after. She seemed to notice me "Oh, Kritika. Your friend's awake."
"My friend?" I furrowed my eyebrows before it struck me "Liam?"
"If that's his name, then yes." she nodded, before picking up the landline "please don't let him move around much. I'll send someone to check the bump on his forehead in a while. He seems okay though."
I didn't even listen to what she said next. As soon as shed said he was awake I'd bolted out of the ward, retrieving my cell phone from my coat pocket. I all but barged into the next room.
~Liam~
I sighed out loud for what felt like the hundredth time in the past few minutes.
I was bored.
So bored that I now knew that there was exactly seventy six flowers on the wall to my right.
My gaze landed on the remote beside the bed. I picked it up and turned it around in my hand.
"Liam! You're awake!"
The remote dropped to my lap at that exclamation and I whipped my head up to look at the source. My eyes met a pair of familiar brown eyes "Jesus, you scared me." I muttered, trying to sound indefferent as I discretly tossed the remote back to where it'd been.
"I scared you? I scared YOU?" she yelled, not caring I was in a hospital. It was way too chaotic for my screaming to even matter " I don't remember being too drunk to function, or getting into an accident. That was all you. If anything, you were the one who scared me. Who scared us."
I winced "Guess I deserve this." I muttered under his breath but I caught it anyway.
"Oh, didn't you." she said sarcastically "we were all so worried. Heck, I had a near heart attack when you crashed into the traffic. I thought you were going to die." she yelled.
I winced again "Do the boys know?"
"They're on their way here. They're probably just stuck in the traffic outside."
"Great. They're going to murder me." I sighed, rubbing my eyes. I had'nt gone home last night. Granted I had told them earlier that I wouldn't be back for a while, but now they were just going to murder me.
"Yeah, don't expect me to save you or anything." she laughed "you deserve a beating from all of them. All four of them." she paused "no, actually six. Alex and Bri know too." she pressed a few buttons, and she was saying all this more to herself.
"Great." I muttered, sighing "that is if my headache didn't kill me before that."
"Oh shush you cry baby." she rolled her eyes, still looking at her phone. Who is she texting?
"A friend."
"Did I say that out loud?" I laughed "would you look at that, the roles are reversed."
She gave me a small smile, not stopping her typing. I looked at her curiously "Are you texting one of the boys?"
She looked up, and shook her head "It's one of my other friends. I accidentally texted him about you. And now he's confused. Poor idiot." she laughed and I forced a smile
The question left my mouth before I could stop myself "Him?"
"Ricky." she said, waving me off like it was no big deal "you don't know him."
"Yeah." I said, lowering my eyes "I don't." I pushed back the feeling of dejection and forced myself to look at her again "Why are you still here?"
She blinked before raising an eyebrow at me "Ouch."
"No, no." I said, realizing how rude it had sounded "I meant.. gah! Let me rephrase it-"
She held out her hand towards me gesturing me to stop "Relax." she laughed "there was an accident with a bunch of kids, and the hospital was short of staff. So I decided to help." she shrugged like it was no big deal "..besides, rookie points for my internship." she winked, dimple showing. Wow. I stared at her in what would basically classify as awe.
Using the word awe to describe describe yourselves, wow you're hopeless.
I realised I'd been staring for a second too longer when I heard her clear her throat "..Hello? Are you even listening to me? So, I was telling you about how Ricky pro-- uhh.. something wrong?" she frowned, the dimple disappearing.
"What? Oh, no nothing." I said "so, Ricky, huh?" I forced a smile
She gave me a long look "What's wrong?"
"Nothing." I muttered, looking away from her. I felt a tap on my hand, and I sighed irritatedly "Tell me?"
"Nothing." I yelled "why won't you quit bothering me?" she withdrew her hand like my words had stung her. I had overreacted, I admit. But I just couldn't have her telling me about what happened between her and.. Ricky.
That should've been me.
I expected her to be hurt at my reaction, which she was. What I didn't expect was for her to lash back.
"What is your problem?" she huffed "first, you get crazy drunk and roam around the streets like a freaking hobo and then you almost, get into an accident. Well that almost could've not been there, you know that? I'm worried sick about you. If you want to talk then I'm here. But instead you're taking it out on me. What is your problem?" she jabbed a finger in my direction in the end, glaring at me.
I looked back at her indifferently and then mutter the words "You."
Her shoulders slumped "What?"
I sat up straighter "You." I said louder. It was like I couldn't stop. "Why I got drunk is none of your business. Why do you want me to talk to you, huh? Why do you want to care so much? That's your problem, Kritika, you care too much. It's not always right to pry into other people's lives and have them tell everything to you. You pretend to be some f*cking Mother Teresa all the time. Who do you think you're fooling? Face it Kritika, you cannot make other people's business your business. It's time that you stop this and finally learn to mind your own. Bloody. Business." I said through gritted teeth. I was panting hard and I could hear the pulse monitor go crazy.
"Well, I'm sorry that I care." she said loudly.
"About time." I muttered under my breath but she seemed to catch it as her expression changed to one of hurt. Immediately, I wanted to take it all back. All of it. I had said things out of anger. Things I didn't even mean. Things that weren't even true.
She wasn't even looking at me now. She was staring at her shoes, though I don't she was even doing that. "Look, I'm s--"
"Don't." she snapped, finally looking at me. Her lower lip trembled slightly "Don't." her voice cracked and my heart plummeted. Oh no.
"I--"
"You've said enough." she said, her voice now loud "you know what, you're right. I care too much." she let out a humourless laugh "about time I quit. And I do, I quit. I quit caring about you. Go to hell." she said through clenched teeth and she turned around and stormed out of the room.
"Shit." I cursed, desperately trying to peel the blanket off of me "ah, shit." What is this made of, cement?
After I all but tore it off of me, I got up from the bed. I had hardly taking one step when I felt something tugging at my arm.
I looked down, ready to rip off the thing that had a hold on me, but I stopped cold.
It was an IV needle.
There was a tube protruding out of my left, bandaged wrist. It didn't take a genius to figure out what it was.
I sat back into the bed, suddenly nauseated.
This can't be happening right now..
I breathe in and out through my mouth, my head spinning fast. The pulse monitor was going crazy.
If there was one thing in this world I was afraid of, it was needles. As a kid, I used to always avoid getting blood drawn. When I did, I almost always fainted immediately after. Embarassing, but guess I was a flower that way.
Breathe in. Breathe out.
I heard the door open and someone gasp "Liam?"
Zayn. I looked at them and grinned. Or at least, tried "Hi."
"Are you okay? Jesus, your lips look grey."
I wanted to laugh. I almost did, but I felt like my body had shut down.
My eyes rolled to the back of my skull and that's when everything went black.
