~19~ The one with poles and friendship

Hayyyy you lovely people! Missed me? I sure did miss y'all :'D

Sooooooooooooo

Dun dun dunnnnnnnn :3

Here it is

Recap:

"You know you can tell me anything right?" I added softly, getting up to leave the room. "Whenever you're ready, you know where to find me."

I heard a light shuffling behind me and heard her sigh.

"Wait." she whispered and I stood at the door, my back towards her.

The silence lasted for what seems like forever till I heard her almost inaudible whisper.

"He broke up with me."

"What?" I spun around in shock.

"Luke." She looked at me through red rimmed eyes "Luke broke up with me."

~Kritika~

I was by her side in a flash as she sniffled. I held her, rubbing her back, neither of us saying a word for a while.

I was in shock after hearing what she said. A few minutes later, the initial shock wore off, and the depth of the situation started sinking in.

Anger replaced shock. That idiot, how could he do this to her?

She must've sensed my shoulders tense up because she pulled back. Sighing, she opened her mouth to speak but closed it back again after a few seconds.

It was like she was in some sort of inner turmoil as she struggled to find the right words.

"Why..?" I asked her softly. She stayed silent.

"He said he didn't feel like it was working anymore." she whispered finally.

What the hell?

"I'm going to kill that little biscuit." I all but roared "Didn't feel like it? Didn't feel like it? He might be my best friend first but he hurt you and--"

"Whoa, calm down. It was me who he broke up with, not you." she chuckled

"Don't you joke about this." I said, wagging my pointer finger at her "he's an idiot and I'm going to kill him. More like fry him in hot oil and feed him to the VULTURES AND-"

"Calm down." she hissed and I realised I'd been screaming "I knew you would react like this. That's why I didn't tell you."

"Do you expect me to be okay with it?" I asked her, sounding hysterical to my own ears."What the hell? I don't understand. I still can't believe it happened."

"Stop!" she yelled grabbbing my shoulders and only then I realized that I was subconsciously pacing around the room. "I'll explain everything too you, okay?"

"You better." I stressed, causing her to roll her eyes at me. Okay, the old Stacey was back.

"I met him on my way back home. He was standing beside the road, in front of our house."

"He was here?" I seethed

"You better shut up and let me complete." she warned "No interruptions or I'll slap you."

Oh, she was definitely back alright.

"Oh you won't." I challenged.

"Yeah, I won't." she paused "But I won't tell you what happened either. And you'll die an unhappy woman" she smiled innocently.

"You're evil." I groaned "Okay I'll shut up."

"He said he wanted to talk to me about something." she said "We went to the park for a bit and yeah ... you know the rest"

"No, I don't." I told her slowly "Did he tell you why?"

"H-he said.." she stammered "he didn't.. I mean, we didn't.. you know.."

I held my breath, afraid she'd break down.

"I guess it's okay." she sighed "Atleast he didn't lead me on and break my heart."

"No." I held her shoulders "No, it's not okay. You loved him and technically, he did break your heart. I'm going to kill that littl-"

"I didn't." she interrupted.

"You didn't what?" I asked, confused.

She gave me a look "you know, love him or anything." she said "I didn't love him." That caught me off guard.

"You didn't?" I repeated to myself, shocked "B-but I thought you did..! You were so crazy about him." I stammered, unable to comprehend the whole thing in my head.

It's like the cogwheels had stopped whirring. She didn't love him?

The two people who seemed perfect for each other from day one, so much so that I was already imagining them with kids and everything, didn't even love each other in the first place?

I was shocked and it was like a slap to my face. Guess things really aren't what they seem.

"Oh no, I know that look.. You're judging me." Stacey said in a worried voice "No. No it's not that." I said quickly

There was a pause "Oh you so are."

"Stace, no." I sighed, rubbing my eyes "it's just that. It's a little hard to take in really. I mean you two.. you two were like one person. You're the kind I pegged for made for each other, you know?"

"Well for the record, I thought so too." she shrugged "I just thought I'll fall in love with him in the way, but I just didn't. I guess, well call me clichéd but, somethings just aren't meant to be. I guess.." she sighed "I guess I was just infatuated."

"Wow." I sighed "well I guess most things aren't meant to be. Right now it's you and before it was.." I stopped and closed my eyes tightly, willing myself to not cry.

I heard a strangled sob followed by an "I'm sorry." which caused my eyes shoot open. I quickly hugged Stacey tightly as her shoulders shook "I-I'm a horrible h-horrible person. You think I.. u-used him don't you?"

"Oi!" I pulled back and slapped her "how did you even think that? You did not use him, okay? It's okay to have crushes, be with them. Might not always end up in love, but it's worth a try isn't it?"

"First of all, ow. Second of all, don't you think this little speech applies to you too missy?"

I opened my mouth and closed it again "it's different."

"Uh huh? How so?"

"I just.. am not ready for this okay? This kind of 'emotional investment'." I said making air quotes "but that doesn't mean it would never happen. Just.."

"Waiting for the right one?" she teased playfully, wiping away a few stray tears.

I felt my cheeks getting warm "Oh shut up, you."

She ruffled my hair and giggled "Sometimes I forget that you're the older one."

"By a few months!"

"Still."

"Shut up." I muttered again, and I smacked her forehead this time. She hissed in fake pain and clutched it. I rolled my eyes "Quit it." she continued to dab at her forehead with her fingers and bringing it back as if to see if there was any blood. That's when I noticed the bruise on her forehead.

"This wasn't there before." I squinted at it "What happened?"

"I-i err i don't know." she stammered, still touching her forehead

"Stacey..." I warned grasping her hand off "..that looks painful ! When did this happen?"

"Uhh.."

"Stace.."

"Okay fine I'll tell you." she sighed.

"You better."

She looked nervous and all sorts of scenarios were running through my mind.

Did he do that?

"Stace.." I warned again

She looked almost.. embarassed?

"I'm freaking out here so you better talk." I repeated

"I.." she gulped "Iwalkedintoapole." she said so quickly I almost didn't catch it.

"You what?"

"I walked into a pole, accidentally on my way back here."

"You walked into a pole?"

"Accidentally, yes."

"But.. a freaking pole? Like the ones which are on corners of sidewalks? The tall metal structures?"

"... I guess."

That did it.

I burst out into peals of laughter that filled the whole room.

"I got it the first time." I wheezed out "Just wanted to hear you say that again."

"You're mean." she whined.

"I know." I joked "But seriously, how could you not see the pole?"

"Okay." she paused "that's debatable."

"You bet." I said seriously causing us to burst out laughing again "and Stacey?"

"Hmm?"

"We don't really need boys to make us feel better about ourselves" I shrugged "..do we?"

"You're right.." she sighed "but I seriously can't wait.. Prince Charming better makes his grand entry soon! Yours too."

"They will." I said "they probably fell off their white horses on their way here.. Into a pile of manure or something..."

"Graceful." she snorted and I had to agree with her on that one "they? As in both of them?"

"Well, what if they're brothers? Or even better, twins?"

"Oooh yeah, jackpot baby!." she said, high fiving me. "Okay, Opera just sounds depressing now." she said, pausing the CD player. She rummaged through her collection and found another CD.

A very familiar tune began playing and a smile crept onto my face. It was an old, old Bollywood song.

"That's my mom's favourite song." I yelled

"I know." she yelled back.

I somehow found myself dancing around the room, skipping to the beat of the music.

She shook her head at me and laughed but joined me a moment later.

We sang loudly and rather obnoxiously, dancing around like baboons on crack.

I secretly rejoiced at her happy, no longer remorseful expression.

*******

The next day in college was a little awkward.

Okay, scratch that. It was awkwarder than farting on a silent night. Loudly. On a microphone. In front of a dozen people.

Stacey, Lucas, Brianna and I used to sit at one table. Usually there used to be a lot of chattering, mostly from my side. But today our table was unusually quiet.

The awkwardness was rolling off a certain guy sitting in front of me. After our little talk the previous night, Stacey was back to normal. Lucas was a completely different story.

He was avoiding everyone, hardly talking. Stacey tried to strike a conversation but gave up after a few failed tries.

Brianna was wedged between them and was throwing me pleading looks, I shrugged apologetically and munched onto my burger.

It was like somebody had died. The silence was deafening and I couldn't take it anymore. At this rate , our friendship would never be the same.

"That's it." I slammed my hand on the table, making everyone jump in surprise "You are coming with me." I pointed at Stacey.

Not giving her a chance to reply, I dragged her out of the canteen getting puzzled looks from everyone around me.

"You need to talk to him." I told her once we were outside.

"Talk about what?" she huffed "There's nothing to talk about."

"The awkwardness in there." I pointed my thumb at the canteen "was palpable. Would this go on forever? Like seriously?"

"I don't know." she shrugged

"Do you want this to ruin what you had before?"

"Hell no." she said loudly "trust me, I want this as much as you do. Bit I don't know.. what would I talk to him about?"

I paused "Okay you got me. I don't know either." I shrugged and sighed
"But what I do know is that my best friends are not talking to each other. I don't want our friendship to weaken and I know you don't either." I trailed and she nodded at me understandingly.

" I want my best friends back." I sighed, rubbing my face.

Since when had our lives tranformed from a sitcom to a drama series?

"Oh darling.." she sighed "I... you're right. We need to sort this shit out. I'm tired, absolutely sick of this drama too." she said, dragging me back into the canteen.

"Hey! Luke! Oi!" she waved at him wildly, causing few heads to turn in her direction "come here."

He looked confused but he got up and slowly walked towards us.

"What's up?" He asked, avoiding her eyes. I sighed.

"We need to talk." she stressed and his head snapped towards her "I promise it won't last long."

He sported a thoughtful expression for a moment before he nodded lightly towards her.

"Good luck." I whispered to her.

I gave them both a small smile and walked back to our table, where Brianna was smiling at me widely.

"You look creepy." I stated, sitting back down.

"You, my love." She grinned "Are something else. You got them to talk."

"I know." I joked "Let's just hope things get okay between them."

"Yeah." she agreed.

I got back to munching on my burger while she ate her salad. People who were staring before had gone back to eating and chattering.

I just hope the rumour mill doesn't go crazy at this.

I sipped some water and heard Brianna clear her throat. I looked up and saw her finishing the last of her salad.

"That's all you're gonna have?" I asked her and she nodded.

"Not really hungry." she admitted.

"Wow." I muttered "I think I might have ten more of these."

Just as I finished my burger, I saw them walk back into the cafeteria. I held my breath.

I looked at them cautiously and saw that they no longer looked awkward together.

Infact, Stacey was laughing on something that Lucas said and she slapped the back of his head.

Just then she caught my gaze and discreetly winked, giving me a thumbs up. I smiled.

We were back.

Sooooooo?

No Litika
Sorry :3

*coughs* Maybe the next chapter? *coughs*

So yeahhhhh got something to say. Heck, I want to rant.

When best friends date and if it doesn't work between them for any reason, they stop being best friends, yes?

Obviously. That's like.. The universal rule. Correct?

No. It isn't.

Yes it is isn't easy for things to get back to normal. Putting back everything that happened and go back to square one.

But did the pain of the relationship really weigh more than all the years of the beautiful friendship they shared? All the times they stood by each other and all the beautiful memories they shared as friends?

Some time V/S Forever

Which one's better?

That's the question my beauties.

......

Okey done ranting :3
