"Bella and Lydia were at the Cullen residence. Bella had something to tell them and had asked everyone to gather, while Lydia was also planning to take the opportunity to share what they had discovered in the past few months. However, she suddenly remembered what Evander had told her months ago and decided to wait until the human left, just in case.
Lydia hugged Carlisle as everyone waited in the small living room, and they saw Bella arrive with Edward.
"I think everyone knows why I asked you to gather here," Bella said softly, slightly nervous.
Carlisle had told Lydia that Bella wished to be transformed into one of them but wanted the majority to agree. In Lydia's opinion, she actually had no say in that discussion, but Carlisle had asked her to stay by his side, insisting that her presence was important.
"Everyone knows this is what I want," Bella continued, looking nervously at everyone present and playing with the ring on her ring finger, "and I know I'm asking a lot. The only fair way I can think of to decide is by voting."
Lydia actually couldn't make sense of her words. Why was she so insistent on being transformed? It seemed like it was the only thing that mattered to her. Carlisle told her that during the time they were away, Bella almost killed herself on more than one occasion, and Edward did the same when he thought Bella was dead. She really didn't understand them.
"You don't know what you're saying," Edward spoke from behind Bella. He really seemed very displeased with his girlfriend's decision. And it was obvious that his vote was a resounding no.
"Shut up," Bella immediately whispered loudly to him. "Alice?"
The named one, who was hugging Jasper, smiled and separated from the man to approach Bella with a huge smile. "I already consider you my sister," they hugged tightly, "yes."
"Thank you," Bella then looked at Jasper.
"I say yes," he spoke from his place, always keeping his distance from that human. The funny thing was that Lydia was almost by his side and it was as if he didn't notice her, "it would be nice not to want to kill you all the time."
Bella nodded with some discomfort but satisfied with Jasper's response. Alice looked at him almost as if she wanted to laugh but restrained herself.
"I'm sorry," it was Rosalie's turn to speak, "I regret very much how I behaved towards you. And I thank you for having the courage to go and save my brother. But this is not the life I would have chosen. I wish there had been someone who voted 'no' for me. So no."
Bella seemed disappointed, but she actually expected that response from the blonde.
"I vote, of course, yes," Emmett said, hugging Bella and giving her a spin in the air, "we can find another reason to fight with the Volturi."
They both laughed.
"I already consider you part of the family," Esme spoke with a small smile, "yes."
"I say no," Evander said firmly and seriously, sounding a bit scary. He was hugging Esme by the shoulders, "I'm sorry, Bella."
She frowned. She didn't like that response at all because she was almost sure he would say yes.
"Why?" she interrogated him with disgust.
He shook his head, dismissing the matter.
"I don't need to give you a reason. I simply say no," he looked at her fixedly.
She nodded with annoyance and turned her gaze to Carlisle and Lydia. The blonde separated from his girlfriend to take a couple of steps forward, looking at Edward instead of Bella.
"I'm sorry, Bella. I understand what you want, but I'll always support Edward, and I'm sure you can face it together. You don't need to be one of us to love Edward. My answer is no."
Once again, Bella seemed disappointed, almost annoyed. For a moment, Lydia realized that the girl was going to snort but she didn't.
"It's a tie," she murmured and looked at Lydia. Everyone did.
The girl blushed at the sudden attention.
"You're also part of the family, Lydia," Alice told her, "your vote is important."
She looked at everyone present.
"I... uh... I don't really know what to say. I'd rather leave it at that."
"It's okay, Lydia," Carlisle encouraged her, "just say what you think."
She sighed tiredly. She didn't want to say anything, she didn't have any particular opinion. But fortunately, she didn't feel pressured, she would just say what was on her mind.
"I... think it's a complicated decision. Bella, you're still very young, and I think you're making hasty decisions. You don't know anything beyond Edward and Forks," she smiled, "but like you, I'm a human who fell in love with a vampire, and we've done quite a few crazy things in the past few months. If you're completely sure about this, I suppose it's okay. Go ahead," she shrugged.
Bella didn't seem very satisfied with Lydia's words, but she had won the "yes" and that was all that mattered. Edward was the least happy in that room, but he also resigned himself and left with Bella to take her home. They would probably have an uncomfortable conversation in the car.
It was Lydia's turn to speak. Everyone sat in the beautiful room, and Lydia and Carlisle remained at the front. Everyone's looks reflected genuine curiosity.
"There's something everyone should know," the girl began without letting go of the man's hand, "Carlisle and I have been investigating for the past few months why you couldn't detect my scent even though I was human. And we found the answer."
Carlisle placed his free hand on Lydia's shoulder as she recovered from the sudden nerves that flooded her body.
"What did you find?" Evander asked impatiently. He didn't like the suspense that had formed so suddenly.
"Lydia has angel blood," Carlisle finally said.
Everyone seemed even more confused.
"Are you serious?" Emmett asked, but the tone he used was one of excitement and perhaps happiness.
"Yes," Lydia replied, looking at him, "apparently my ancestors saved an angel, and with the help of witches, they mixed the angel's blood with that of humans to protect them from supernatural creatures. That's why no supernatural being can smell me or track me."
"Wow," Jasper murmured, and everyone looked at him, "I thought Nephilim were a myth. When I was newly transformed, there was a rumor about humans with angel blood, but no one ever found them. I guess that's the reason. All the vampires I know... think it's a myth."
"We thought it was important for everyone to know," Lydia told them with a smile, "you've all trusted me by telling me your secret, and I thought it was best not to keep secrets or lie."
Esme smiled tenderly, and Evander seemed equally proud. She looked at Carlisle with a nod.
"Well, as long as Aro doesn't find out, nothing will happen," Evander said with a big smile, "don't worry, we won't let anyone hurt you."
"Of course not," Emmett agreed.
Ly
dia smiled at him, and Carlisle was about to speak when the girl stepped forward.
"There's something else," she hurried to say, and everyone heard how her heartbeats suddenly sped up. Carlisle frowned at her. She lowered her gaze, unsure of how to say it.
"Lydia?" Carlisle spoke to her with curiosity.
The girl's cheeks were red, and her eyes had suddenly crystallized. She looked at Carlisle with puppy eyes.
"I'm two months pregnant," her voice sounded like a whisper, but all the vampires heard her loud and clear.
If a vampire could faint, Carlisle would already be on the ground like the other Cullens. Everyone was in complete shock as they looked at Lydia, not understanding what she had just said. Pregnant? Was that possible?
She lowered her gaze again, embarrassed. Her eyes were beginning to crystallize.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner," she said to Carlisle without looking at him, "I received the blood test results this morning since my period is very irregular, but I had some symptoms, and I preferred to wait for a blood test."
The man couldn't say anything; in fact, no one had any words. They were just shocked. They had taken the news that Lydia was a Nephilim very well, but... pregnant?
Emmett stood up and approached Lydia to give her a rather gentle hug.
"Congratulations," he said with a tone of pride.
The others seemed to return to reality after that, but still, they didn't know what to say.
"Is that possible?" Alice asked in a murmur. No one missed the tiny mischievous smile that suddenly lit up her face.
Everyone looked at Carlisle, who seemed to have his mind elsewhere.
"I don't know," he finally said and looked at Lydia, "I had never heard of such a thing."
"Maybe we should leave them alone to talk about this," Evander suggested as he stood up, "congratulations, Lydia," he smiled.
She nodded and murmured a "thank you."
"Congratulations, Lydia," this time it was Esme who said it and approached to give her a hug before leaving with her husband.
Everyone left, leaving Carlisle and Lydia alone. She looked at the floor because she couldn't bring herself to look into Carlisle's eyes. He took her by the cheeks to make her look at him.
'Why didn't you tell me earlier?' he asked gently. Lydia didn't detect annoyance or anger.
She shrugged and wiped away the tears that had accumulated in her eyes.
'I was scared and didn't know how to say it,' her lip corners drooped, 'are you upset with me?'
Carlisle smiled, and an intense brightness reached his eyes.
'Of course not, although I admit it was a very shocking piece of news. We should go to the hospital tomorrow and do some tests. Are you okay? Have you had any strange symptoms?'
She shook her head with a small smile.
'Nothing strange. Actually, I just have morning sickness, but other than that, I feel great. I think it's because of my condition. Besides, I remind you that I'm also a doctor,' she laughed, 'if there was something wrong... I would have noticed it.'
He nodded and didn't hesitate to kiss her lips. It seemed like a dream, and Carlisle hadn't had one in a long time. Was all this real? He couldn't believe it. But if he was honest with himself... he was excited.
'Tomorrow morning we'll go to the hospital. If you feel bad or anything, just say it,' he couldn't think clearly with the amount of ideas flooding his brain; he felt overwhelmed, 'I'll do a blood test, an ultrasound, a urine test, I have to constantly check your vital signs, maybe I should do the pantry again. Did I already say a blood test?'
'Carlisle,' she interrupted his babbling, 'everything will be fine, okay? Tomorrow we'll go to the hospital, and I'll let you do all the studies and tests you need to feel more at ease. I know you're scared... I am too, but I swear I've never felt as good as I do now in my life. I'll tell you if I feel something strange.'
He nodded. If Carlisle could cry, he would have done it at that moment. He placed both hands on his girlfriend's belly and stayed still for a moment, then he heard some barely perceptible heartbeats; surely Lydia was hiding it because of her condition, but there it was, now that he paid close attention, he could hear it. It was barely noticeable, the small bump in the girl's belly, he hadn't noticed it before, and he felt very bad about it, but it was right there, and slowly, it began to grow.
A baby. He would really be a father. It was something he had never imagined. There were so many emotions running through his body and so many thoughts in his brain. A real family, a little human with his blood. He worried... what if it was a monster like him? No. He shouldn't think about that now; he wanted to be positive and think that everything would be fine. That that being would be just like Lydia because right now he was listening to her heartbeats... if it were like him, that wouldn't be possible. It had a heart full of life and intense warmth. With brown eyes or maybe blue like his were in the past. He would have rosy cheeks and the most beautiful smile.
Would it be a boy? A girl? What name would they choose? They needed their own room. He furrowed his brow; Lydia and he would have to start living together.
He cleared his mind and focused on the present. He didn't want to worry about absolutely anything for now. He just wanted to keep listening to those faint heartbeats that were music to his ears.
