"Bistoury," Lydia requested, and Cristina quickly placed the instrument in her hand. "Needle and thread."
"Here you go, Doctor."
"Now, adhesive bandage."
"Spiderman or Hello Kitty?"
"Amy?"
"Spiderman."
"You heard the girl."
"Right away."
"And done. Mr. Pelusin has completed his surgery and was an excellent patient." Lydia dressed the small koala plush toy and then handed it to the girl beside her. "The stuffing won't come out anymore, but don't forget to bring him back in a few days for a check-up, okay?"
Amy took her plush toy to hug it, then looked up at Lydia with big eyes of gratitude.
"Okay. Thank you, Doctor Lydia."
"My pleasure," she smiled.
Amy ran off laughing.
"You really like kids, don't you?"
Both women turned to look at Doctor Cullen. Lydia rolled her eyes as she stood up and removed the gloves she had used.
"I think I'll... leave you two alone," Cristina said, taking a folder in her arms and leaving with a big smile. She always did that.
"Her father went into surgery half an hour ago, and she was in the waiting room very scared. I saw her plush toy was torn, so I just asked if she wanted me to fix it. It seems she's calmer now."
Carlisle smiled tenderly. Every day he liked that girl more, there was no doubt about it.
"That was very nice of you."
He noticed that Lydia wanted to say something else, but in the end, she didn't. Instead, she gave him a smile. Deep down, Carlisle knew, Lydia dreamed of having children, but that was probably the only thing in the world he could never give her.
He approached her to cup her cheeks.
"Carlisle, we agreed no displays of affection at work."
The man put on a puppy face. Lydia smiled before looking towards the only entrance to that office and stood on tiptoe to give him a quick kiss on the lips.
"That was the last one, I promise."
"You've said that since eight in the morning, and every hour you come looking for me to give you a kiss."
He chuckled.
"I plead guilty," he tilted his head a bit to kiss the girl again, this time taking more time and deepening the kiss.
They heard someone clearing their throat. Lydia separated from Carlisle very scared, and the man just laughed quietly. He knew perfectly well that someone had approached.
"Excuse the interruption, doctors," it was Sarah, "an ambulance is on its way. A family of three had a car accident, they're all stable, and the paramedics reported minor injuries."
"Thank you, Sarah. We'll be right there," Carlisle answered softly.
The nurse nodded before leaving. Lydia looked at Carlisle reproachfully.
"I won't fall for your wicked games again."
"Wicked games?" he asked amused.
"Yes, wicked games."
She grabbed her stethoscope and tucked it into the pocket of her coat. Then she left the office with Carlisle following closely behind with a smile.
At half-past eight in the evening, they were both in the man's car heading to Lydia's house. Meanwhile, Lydia sang along to the songs on the radio, and Carlisle laughed softly.
"I can't believe you don't know that song. It's so good," Lydia said, turning up the volume.
"Sorry. I'm not very knowledgeable about current music."
"It's okay. With me by your side, you'll learn every one of those songs."
They both smiled, and Lydia continued singing.
"By the way," Carlisle placed a hand on the girl's leg, "Alice wants to throw Bella a surprise birthday party. Would you like to come?"
"I don't think Bella will be thrilled about the celebration, but sure. I'll be there."
They stopped in front of Lydia's house, but both remained in the car for a moment in complete silence.
"Is it okay if I stay over tonight?" Carlisle asked, using the same timid tone as the first time.
Lydia didn't understand why he still seemed quite shy about it, but she found it adorable.
"You know it is."
Carlisle quickly got out of the car and then helped Lydia out. They both entered the house in silence, but as soon as the door closed behind them, Lydia jumped into Carlisle's arms to start kissing him.
---
"Can I ask you something?" Lydia spoke, lying on Carlisle's chest, tracing small circles on his skin.
"Of course," he glanced at her briefly, but his eyes returned to the ceiling.
"You're supposed to be dead, right?"
"Yes," he furrowed his brow.
"Then how is it that... your reproductive organ manages to... rise," she raised her index finger, "There's no blood to help that happen."
Carlisle let out a laugh that infected Lydia.
"I'd love to explain it to you, but I'm not entirely sure. Many times I've tried to uncover the secrets behind vampires, but it's very complicated. My guess is that it's probably the venom. Instead of blood, the poison circulates, and it works more or less the same way. The difference is that the venom helps us heal faster and keeps us alive. So to speak."
"What else have you found out?"
He thought for a moment.
"Not much, actually. I have more questions than answers."
"I want to know, no matter how simple."
"Unlike our digestive system, the nervous system didn't change too much. I feel your warmth, you know? I feel your hands on my cold skin, and I like your warmth. You smell like honey and grapefruit, it's a rather peculiar combination, but I sensed it from the moment you arrived at the hospital. I don't understand why others can't perceive it."
"You've
told me things about me, but nothing about you."
Carlisle revealed a mischievous smile.
"I can see very clearly from a considerable distance, I can hear even if you whisper outside the house. I'm very fast and strong. Everything I feel, I feel with more intensity," he took Lydia by the waist and made her sit on his abdomen, "When I say I love you, I do it in a way you can't even imagine. If I could breathe, you would have taken my breath away a long time ago," their positions swapped, "Every time I see you, all my sanity fades away," he left a quick kiss on the girl's lips, "You're the only reason it's been worth living for so long. Meeting you was the best thing that ever happened to me."
Lydia smiled foolishly at the man's words and took Carlisle by the neck to kiss him.
"You're too cheesy, did you know that?"
"Does it bother you?"
"Not at all."
"Now sleep, tomorrow we have to go to work, and you'll be in a bad mood if you don't rest."
"I was going to complain, but you're right."
Carlisle kissed her forehead and settled in bed next to her. Lydia hugged him again before closing her eyes and falling into a deep sleep. Carlisle also closed his eyes and let the beats of his heart fill his ears.
