Chapter Twelve
One year later...
"J-Jesse, where are you going?" Radar asked me as I started to walk out of the temple. "Sir Lukas, Axel and Madam Olivia are going to arrive soon! A-And you've got Founding Day to attend to!"
"I'm just heading to Mevia's" I replied. "I wanna check on her and Harmony"
"Harmony?" Radar asked me. "Oh! Her daughter! That's right! I keep forgetting she has a child now..." He chuckled nervously.
"Not to mention she's eight months old now" I added. "And crawling, little rascal gets into so much trouble"
"Heh, I bet" Radar said. "My sister was like that. She... Always chewed on my stuff..." I chuckled slightly. It had been a year since I discovered Mevia's little secret, and since then I made sure to check in with her and comfort her whenever I could. Soon enough, she informed Otto and Harper on her unexpected pregnancy, and four months later gave birth to a small bundle of joy she named Harmony. At first, she wasn't sure on how to handle Harmony and had a hard time looking after her without help in the form of a spouse, but after given advice from some friends and even some townsfolk, she was able to look after Harmony on her own. Even so, I still like to visit her from time to time to check in on her and Harmony. Ever since she was born, Mevia's health, both physical and mental has slowly improved overtime. Every time I was over, I almost teared up with joy to see Mevia so... Happy. Before, she was broken, devastated over her husband's death... Now, while she still missed Hadrian immensely, she smiled brightly and was overjoyed with spending her life with her young baby daughter. Just thinking about it made me want to tear up in joy, but luckily, I didn't
"When will you be back Jesse?" Radar asked me with his notepad out
"Soon" I replied
"Uh... Specifics?" He asked me with a small hint of sarcasm that made me smile. While he still is anxious from time to time, Radar and I have grown close as friends, to the point we can joke around even during work hours. The whole event with Hadrian and Mevia may have ended in a sorrowful way, but it did have its positives; Mevia has Harmony, and I've grown closer to my intern
"Fine... Around 10am" I replied with my own tone of sarcasm mixed in. Radar took the note down and nodded
"OK" He said. "You have no scheduled events until after 10:30am once the others arrive, so you're free to go Jesse!" I smiled
"Thanks Radar" I said to him as I started to walk out the temple. "If anything happens, can you handle it?"
"I'll try my best!" He replied. "Oh! And say hi to Mevia and Harmony for me!" I gave him the thumbs up, before I left. As I walked through town, I got an early glimpse of Founding Day stalls and set ups. A few locals gave me a small wave, but none stopped to chat, which was good since I was on limited time myself. I bristly walked out of town, the sun rising at a slow pace, the early morning frost consuming me immediately. I shivered slightly, regretting not taking a small jacket, but I knew the weather would warm up eventually. I was eager to see Mevia and Harmony today, with it being both their first Founding Day, I had something for them. Well, for Harmony, but Mevia appreciated me dropping in anyway, so hopefully she didn't mind that I couldn't find her a gift of sorts
I turned off the path as per usual and already saw the small house in the distance, the tree blooming with small, pink cherry blossoms. By the base of the tree was Mevia and in her arms... An Ocelot? The way she was holding it was... Awkward... As I drew closer however, I squealed with delight; It wasn't an ocelot, it was Harmony in an Ocelot onesie Lukas gave her and oh my god, she looked ADORABLE! I dashed up to the two and immediately started gushing over Harmony, who smiled when I approached
"Awww!" I cooed. "Aren't you just the cutest little ocelot? Yes you are! Yes you are!" Harmony giggled, while Mevia chuckled
"Hello to you to Jesse" She said to me. I looked up at her and smiled sheepishly
"Sorry" I said. "It's just that Harmony looks ADORABLE!" I squealed, making both Harmony and Mevia giggle
"I'm glad it suits her" Mevia replied. "I'll have to thank Lukas for the onesie if I see him in town today"
"Oh, so you guys are heading down for Founding Day?" I asked her. Mevia nodded
"I thought it would be nice to join in on the celebration, maybe get Harmony a new toy, or I could treat myself to something" Mevia explained as she tickled her daughter, making her gurgle and laugh. Mevia smiled. "Besides, I need to clean Ivor and Harper's lab. They've been gone for quite some time, and I bet those cobwebs have returned..."
"While you're at it, maybe you should clean Lukas' house as well" I added. "There's so many cobwebs there, I swear he has a pet spider!" The two of us shared a laugh for a moment, before I stopped and secretly pulled something out of my inventory. I grinned. "Hey Harmony" I said, grabbing the baby's attention immediately. "Guess what I've got for you...?" Harmony gurgled a little. I smiled and revealed the item I had bought for her; A small pig plushie. Harmony grinned and snatched the toy off of me. Mevia put her down on the grass and let her play with the soft toy
"Ba!" Harmony squeaked, imitating a sheep. Mevia and I laughed once more
"No, a pig goes 'oink!'" I said to her
"Ba!" Harmony repeated. I chuckled. Harmony proceeded to nibble on the pig's ears, before she started to crawl around the garden, the toy still in her mouth.
"She looks so cute!" I cooed once more. "She looks like a little baby ocelot prowling around the garde- AH! SO CUTE!" I squealed. Mevia chuckled as she carefully watched her daughter wander around the garden. Slowly however, Mevia's smile started to fade away. After it did, she started to tear up slightly. Noticing this, I placed my hand on her shoulder, grabbing her attention
"Hey... You OK?" I asked her. Mevia sniffled slightly, but nodded
"I'm fine" She replied. "Just..." She paused for a moment. "Harmony is a lot like her father... A lot like her father." She smiled sadly. "She's a fast learner, she's already shown her creative side, she seems to love animals, especially pigs, and... She even looks a bit like him. Her hair is spiked slightly... She even has his eyes..." A tear slowly trickled down Mevia's cheek as she spoke. "When I look at her, I'm always reminded of Hadrian, of who he was, and... What happened to him..." She let out a sob. I looked at her sadly and patted her on the back as I tried to find the right words to comfort her. Eventually, I was able to find some
"Well... That just shows you that Hadrian never left you" I spoke. "That he lives within Harmony, within you, as long as you never forget who he truly was. Harmony shows you that... He's still around, in your memories, and your heart" Mevia looked down and sobbed, but she looked up at me and smiled
"That's really cheesy..." She said as she wiped her tears away
"Cheese pizza cheesy" I replied. Mevia chuckled and turned her attention to Harmony, who was only a few blocks away admiring a butterfly. Mevia started to tear up once more, but this time, she smiled
"... I'm glad I have Harmony" She said. "And I'm glad you're my friend Jesse. So is your intern Radar, Olivia, Lukas, Axel, Petra... And of course Otto and Harper. Even with Hadrian gone, I... I don't feel alone anymore. I feel loved again. Maybe not the way Hadrian did, but I don't want to fall for someone again, I want to stay true to him and look after our child" As if on cue, Harmony crawled over to Mevia, the pig plushie still in her mouth. She reached up to her mother, begging to be picked up. Mevia smiled and picked up her daughter and nuzzled her, before cuddling her. I smiled sadly as I watched her embrace her child, and once again, I felt myself tearing up at the sight. I was so happy that Mevia was finally recovering from her trauma and depression. She had gone through a lot, much that I felt responsible for... Even though I still felt I should've stopped her and Hadrian at The Games, I never helped them when they needed it, which ultimately put them in the position they're in today... While this still bothered me to this day, especially after Hadrian's passing, I still found a reason to smile whenever I saw Mevia and Harmony. Mevia was gifted with a beautiful daughter, one that helped her with her depression, and even before she woke up from her coma, I was gifted with befriending someone I never thought I would; Hadrian. The man that I thought was twisted, self-centred and manipulative was actually a kind, caring and sensitive being. I was glad I helped him in his final days. I was glad I was there in his final moments, and I am proud to call him a friend until my own final day... The same goes with Mevia, someone who was now one of my closest friends outside the Order. Despite fate taking Hadrian away from us all, I was glad everything was as it was today. New friendships and families forged. I would never want it any other way
Never...
