Chapter One
I never thought we would ever see these two once more, but the world had other ideas, for our paths had crossed once more, but in a horrendous way...
"It... It's them!" Petra stammered. "What the hell are they even doing here?!" I had no answer for Petra's question. I didn't know. I didn't want to know. Petra and I only stared at the two Old Builders, almost forgetting that they were casualties in this event, until I looked closer at their injuries; Mevia's dress had been burnt all the way up to her knees, her legs covered in gashes and soot. Her left arm was bent in an un-natural position and showed a large burn, and her usual cyan blue hair was stained with blood from the large gash on her forehead, the liquid itself flowing into the riverbank. However, she had gotten out lucky... Hadrian on the other hand, no doubt got the short end of the stick; His clothes were all burnt and torn up, presumably by mobs, bleeding cuts and bruises all over his body, large burns located on both his arms, his right leg looking dis-jointed, but the injury no doubt the worse was the large and deep bleeding gash down his back that had torn through his skin all the way to scraping his spine. I gulped, using almost all my willpower to not throw up then and there. From Petra's green face, she was also feeling sick and light-headed from all the blood. I shook my head and kneeled down, checking for a pulse from both Old Builders. To my surprise and relief, I received one from both of them, but both were faint, especially Mevia's... I stood back up and turned to Petra, only to see her throwing up behind a nearby charred tree. I don't blame her for giving in. It was sickening...
"Petra, go grab the horses" I told her once she returned, looking a little better. She nodded and took off North where are horses were still waiting patiently. I quickly got to work on tending to any injuries I could; I cleared the riverbank of the rocks and broken glass from Hadrian's glasses to avoid hurting the two even further. I rolled both of them onto their sides, making sure both were breathing evenly. To my relief, they were. I decided to tend to Hadrian first. I carefully removed his glasses and tended to the burns on his arms by dipping two bandages I had on me into uncontaminated water and lightly wrapping them around the burns. Next, I cleaned the small wounds on him and covered any that needed to be to avoid further injury, however I had to stop there. I didn't know what to do with his right leg or the gash on his back... As I started to wash off the soot on Mevia's legs, Petra arrived with both of our horses in tow. In seeing the injuries once more, the colour almost immediately drained from Petra's face, however she shook it off, and with my assistance, moved both Hadrian and Mevia onto our horses.
"Let's get these two back to Lukas' House!" Petra spoke, however I shook my head. "What?!" Petra shouted. "His place is the closest!"
"These guys need professional medical attention Petra!" I pointed out. "Lukas is no doubt smart, but he wouldn't have the proper skills or medical knowledge onto treating these guys, especially that gash on Hadrian... We need to get them back to Beacon Town and fast!" No more words were spoken. Petra only nodded and gave me an understanding and determined look. Quickly yet carefully as we could do, we started to guide our horses through the charred and dead forest, with the two Old Builders in tow. As we made our way through the wreck left in the fire's wake, so many questions with no answers there to complete them swirled in my head; how was the fire caused? Were there any lives lost? Were Hadrian and Mevia the only casualties found in this condition? And Hadrian and Mevia only brought more questions; why were they here? What were they here for? How did they survive? Will they survive? And most importantly;
Will the others be willing to help them?
Petra and I burst through the doors of the temple with our horses and casualties in tow, almost immediately grabbing everyone's attention. I didn't hesitate on orders.
"Radar, go grab the doctors!"
"Olivia, set up some rooms and beds for these two!"
"Axel, help us move these two, and carefully!"
"Petra, take the horses back to the stables!"
Everyone immediately headed off to do their assigned job, with Radar bolting out of the temple, Olivia running off to the spare rooms to set them up, Axel, carefully cradling both Hadrian and Mevia in his arms and Petra leading the horses out of the temple. Axel carried the two Old Builders to the spare rooms Olivia had set up in almost record time. Axel carefully lowered Mevia onto one bed, with Olivia immediately tending to any wounds she could. Axel made his way to the room next door and placed Hadrian down carefully on his side, his gash completely visible. No words were spoken during this. Everyone was quiet, but the panic and tension rising within us all was obvious with Olivia sweating and tearing up at the sight of the injuries and Axel shaking as he lowered the casualties into their beds. We had never seen or experienced any injuries like this ever since we obtained the title of heroes, and it was a surprised we hadn't seen or experienced them until now... With Olivia working on Mevia's wounds and Axel watching over Hadrian, I walked back out into the main room where Radar ran in with a group of doctors.
"B-Boss! Here they are!" Radar stuttered, panting slightly.
"Where are they?" One of the doctors asked. Without hesitation, I showed the doctors the way. As soon as they saw the condition both Old Builders were in, they pushed Olivia and Axel out of the rooms, closed the door and immediately got to work. All we could hear was the doctors speaking to one another in a calm yet alerted tone as they tended to Hadrian and Mevia. We all stood there, flabbergasted. Once more, we were speechless. The silence followed as we made our way back to the main room where Radar was waiting for us, shaking slightly with Petra by his side who also looked concerned and even a little frightened by the situation at hand.
"How are they?" Petra asked us.
"We don't know" I answered. "From what we heard though, the doctors have everything under control, so that's a relief" I heard Radar sigh with relief. No doubt he was the most concerned and scared of us all. He had only been on the job as my intern for a month now and had already been thrusted into a dire situation. Despite how shaky he was, for his first time, he was handling this very well.
"I'm glad that you guys found them and brought them here" Olivia said. "Those injuries looked bad..." She paused for a moment. "Another thing on my mind though is how they got here in the first place, and why"
"I had that same question on my mind as well" I spoke up. Silence fell over the group for a short moment.
"... Do you think they came here to attack us?" Petra spoke up. "To attack you?"
"A-A-Attack...?!" Radar stuttered, shaking even more. "Th-They-"
"I bet they did, those old freaks!" Axel stepped in, his anger now rising. "They must've escaped and came here to hurt you Jesse!"
"Guys, we don't that!" Olivia spoke. "Sure, they're not... 'Nice', but we can't just assume they came here just for revenge!"
"Come on Olivia, they locked us up in an obsidian jail!"
"Axel, that was ages ago!"
"I have to agree with Axel, they're horrible!" Petra jumped in. "Trapping those competitors, pushing Otto around, kidnapping and caging you two like animals-" Before I knew it, the three of them got into an argument, with Axel and Petra now furious with the Old Builders and Olivia trying to defend them despite their faults. I only sighed and looked over to Radar, who looked very scared and very confused. I walked up to him and calmly patted him on the back.
"Don't worry" I started. "This... Happens sometimes..." I lied. Sometimes was an understatement. This happened every time we met up. Axel and Olivia may be close friends, even best friends, but they both had completely different views. Petra usually sides with Axel and if Lukas was around, he would side with Olivia, leaving me and now Radar stuck in the middle. This topic is the actual reason I didn't want to take Hadrian and Mevia to Lukas' home; I was afraid he wouldn't help them. Lukas is very protective of me, which I do appreciate, but he has strong opinions and sticks to those ideals. In a way, he's stubborn. It doesn't take someone like Notch to know that Lukas would hate Hadrian and Mevia after what they did to us all, and he certainly does, with a burning passion. He wouldn't help them, I know it, and now the rest of the team seem split on this. While I certainly don't like the two malicious Old Builders, I wouldn't leave them for dead. It doesn't matter what they did in the past, no one, and I mean no one, deserves to die in a fire.
The argument continued for a little longer, before I finally got sick of it. Sometimes, it's amusing to see two different views clash, but right now was not the best time, especially in front of young Radar. I stepped in the middle of the opposing groups.
"Alright, that's enough!" I shouted above their squabbling. "This is getting us nowhere! If we really want to know why they're here, we'll ask them when they come to conscious"
"If they come to conscious..." Olivia said, which was an alarming possibility, but one I didn't want to think about
"I'm sure they will" I reassured her. "These doctors have saved countless lives, and I know they can save these guys as well. We'll just keep a watchful eye over them and let them recover here"
"You mean you will let them recover" Petra sneered. I turned to her and Axel, a little confused. "Axel and I aren't helping with this anymore" She continued
"Yeah, they're your problem now" Axel added.
"Guys, that's just mean!" Olivia exclaimed.
"Serves them right" Axel snapped. "I'm heading back to Boomtown. Magnus needs me to watch over the town while he's gone"
"Guys-"
"Sorry Jesse, but we're not helping those freaks" Petra spoke. "Look, you can help them if you want, but it's not our fault if you get backstabbed. And if you get killed, shrug it off. Later" Without another word, Axel and Petra left the temple, leaving the three of us speechless on their behaviour.
"I... I wasn't expecting that f-from them..." Radar muttered.
"I wasn't either..." I replied. I sighed. "I guess it's just the three of us..."
"Actually..." Olivia started. Oh no... "I... I've got a lot of stuff to do in Redstonia. I'm sorry Jesse, I really do want to help, but I have to tend to my duties there, but I promise, I'll be supporting you from afar. If you need an extra hand, I can always send Calvin" I smiled sadly.
"Its fine Olivia, I understand" I said to her. "I appreciate you just standing up for the two. You head back to Redstonia. Radar and I have this under control" I turned to Radar. "Don't we?" Radar looked up and nodded.
"U-Uh, y-yes boss!" Radar stammered. Olivia giggled.
"Aww, he's so cute!" She cooed, making him blush. She chuckled and turned to me, giving me a hug which I returned immediately. "Good luck" She said to me.
"Thanks" I replied as I broke from the hug. "You to" Olivia smiled.
"I'll see you later Jesse!" She said as she started to walk out. "And you to Radar! Bye!"
"Bye!" Radar and I said as we waved her off. When Olivia was finally gone, Radar turned back to me, still a little red from the compliment Olivia gave him before.
"B-Boss..." He started, though I put my hand up, indicating him to stop.
"Remember Radar, you don't have to call me 'Boss'" I politely interrupted him. "Just Jesse is fine, and no need to call me 'ma'am' either" Radar nodded
"R-Right" He said before continuing. "J-Jesse, can... C-Can we really handle this. I-I've only heard stories on Hadrian a-and Mevia, a-and they seem like scary people... Will they a-attack you? O-Or me?! A-And if they don't, will they be O-OK?" I only smiled at Radar and gently placed my hand on his shoulder.
"You've already proven you can handle The Order's shenanigans" I started. "I'm sure you can handle this. I know you've only been on the job for a month and this a scary situation, but everything will be OK. I'm sure Hadrian and Mevia will recover, and if they do attack, I know what to do. I can handle them, and I know you can handle them to, in your own way" Radar smiled nervously and bowed a little
"Thank you Jesse" He said with a smile. "I'll try my best!" I smiled. When Radar isn't panicking or fanboying, his enthusiasm and eagerness to help shines.
"You always do" I spoke. "But you still have a job to commit you; can you check on the doctors and Hadrian and Mevia's conditions?" Radar nodded with a smile.
"Of course Jesse!" He said without one stammer. Calmly, he started to make his way to where the Old Builders were resting. Once he was gone, I sighed and took a seat on the steps leading to the stacks of armour. Everything that had happened so far was a tad overwhelming and a lot to take in. I took a deep breath to calm myself down as I thought over everything I knew so far; Hadrian and Mevia had escaped from the world I imprisoned them in and made it to this world, however their intentions are unknown. While making their way through the forest, they got caught in the forest fire and were injured badly. My guess is that they tried to escape the fire by staying in the water, but their plan didn't work as the fire was raging on both sides, so they must've gotten trapped. Some things still didn't line up however; how did they get as injured as they did? While the fire was damaging, I can't figure out how it could've given Hadrian that gash on his back, or possibly dis-locate his leg and Mevia's arm. Something else must've happened to them, mostly likely linked to the fire, but not directly caused by the flames itself. Whatever it was, it had damaged both Old Builders a lot, though I still couldn't help but wonder if they would recover from all this, not just physically, but mentally as well. I sighed once as I stood up.
Only time would tell...
