I was standing outside the school leaning on a tree waiting for Grace when out of nowhere an Audi R8 stopped in front of me. I casually looked at the driver and my jaw along with my teeth hit the ground when I saw Michael sitting there, grinning at me.
"Boy I could use a camera right about now", he said with a cocky grin.
I expected him to offer me a lift home but instead he got out of the car and joined me near the tree. He must have noticed me frowning because he asked,
"What?"
"What are you doing?" I said, my eyes sliding to a couple of jocks who must have noticed Michael getting out of the car and were now looking at him with their eyes as huge as saucers.
"Keeping you company? I heard Grace ask you to wait for her so I decided to stay with you till she comes," he said, shrugging.
"Why?" I asked, completely stupefied.
"You saved me two times today. The least I can do for you is keep you company till your friend comes. This is me, thanking you. So, suck it up and be nice."
I grinned and bumped my shoulder to his. At his frown, I said
"What? This is me, being nice." I said, cheekily.
He rolled his eyes at me.
It was kind of fun to watch all the guys gawk at the car. I don't know which was funnier. Watching them drooling over the car or seeing their shocked expression when they realized whose it was.
Usually, the geeky guy drives a bicycle which the cool kids make fun of and push over but it was awesome to see the nerd driving the coolest car on campus.
"Is it yours?" I asked.
"Nah. It is my brothers'. Mine is in the workshop. A Jaguar." he said, he said with a sad look as if that was any less cool.
"Oh, so you come from money." I said, casually as I realized that I had paid lunch for a guy who could probably buy the whole school lunch for as long as we were here.
"Yeah." he said looking embarrassed.
We grew quiet but surprisingly it was a comfortable silence.
"Where do you live?" I asked, suddenly
"Nope. Nada. I am not answering that. I don't want my house trashed when you get pissed at me." he said, with both his hands raised.
"What?" I said, outraged. " You really think I would trash your house if I got an----- Oh yeah, wait,
that does sound like me." I said, grinning. "But don't worry, I wouldn't trash your house. Yet."
He must have been reassured by what I said or realized that I would figure it out anyway, because he said "I live at the 22nd."
"Oh my god. That is like 3 streets over from mine. Go figure." I said, my eyes wide.
Suddenly I started jumping
"Ooh ooh, let me guess. You live with your parents and a younger sister plus any other siblings you might have." I said.
He looked abashed and said
"First of all, great guess on the fact that I have parents," he said, with a proud look at me. I stuck my tongue at him.
"And secondly, why did you presume I have a younger sister?" he asked, frowning.
"Well, you just seem like the kind of guy who would have a younger sister he will help with her homework, scare away monsters from under her bed and tie her ponytails." I said, shrugging.
Michael had been smiling until I had reached my ponytail part and then he glared outrageously at me, his eyes narrowed under his specs.
"Why do you always make me sound like a girl? Tie a ponytail? Really?"
I just grinned.
"And also, if you must know, I don't have a younger sister. Just the older brother whose car I borrowed. What about you? Any siblings you terrify to death?"
"Nope. It is just me. My father travels a lot and my mom is an author."
"Oh." he said. " My parents travel a lot too. So usually it is just my brother Drew and me."
As we were talking, the cheerleaders came pouring out of the school. One in particular, caught my attention.
"Oh my god, what did she do?" I said, horrified.
Daisy was walking towards her car with a neck brace and she looked absolutely pissed and her glare was directed at none other then------
"Grace," I said, resignedly.
Grace came walking stiffly towards us with her head held high, ignoring the glares directed at her by the Plastics.
"Grace, what did you do?" Beside me, Michael was shaking his head exasperatedly though with a hint of a smile.
"Why do you think I did anything?" she asked innocently.
I just glared at her.
"What? She was just standing on top of the pyramid and one of the guys in the bottom just happened to stumble and she fell. It was no one's fault."
I could feel that migraine catching on.
Daisy's glare promised retribution and something told me Grace and I both would take the brunt of it.
But the moment she saw Michael standing beside me, she frowned and then out of nowhere, waved at Michael with a huge grin.
I looked at Michael who was staring at Daisy with a strange look.
"Is she for real? Did she just wave at the guy she had humiliated two hours ago."he said.
Daisy said "That is a great car", as she sashayed passed Michael, her hand sliding provocatively over his shoulder.
Daisy and I were looking at her with our jaws hanging. Michael started brushing off his shoulder as if there was lint on it.
"What just happened?" I said.
"I think you just called attention to Michael by talking to him." Grace said musingly.
Grace and I said bye to Michael who still had a dazed look in his eyes and drove out of the school The moment he was out of sight, Grace turned to me and said "So......?"
"So, what?" I said, my eyes following the car. Boy, what I wouldn't do to ride in that car.
"You appeared pretty chummy with the new guy." she said, winking.
"He needed my help. Shut up. Let's go." I said flatly as I grabbed my skateboard.
"What? I am just saying, maybe HE could take you to the Prom Dance." she said, standing on her skateboard, one leg out, ready to push.
"I will. The moment I see a flying pig saying hi to me." I said.
Grace just sighed.
Suddenly Daisy drove past, glaring at us through her car window.I glared back. That bitch is going down.

Grace and I raced to my house on our skateboard. We entered the house laughing as Mom peeked out of her kitchen with her hands holding a plate full of cookies. We ran over to her and grabbed one cookie each.
"You girls are going to break your legs someday, riding that skateboard. Do you know how dangerous those things are?" she tsked.
"Don't worry Mrs. Gupta, we are careful when we use it. It is not as dangerous as you think." Grace said while devouring a cookie.
"Of course I do. How do you think I meant Rebel's father?"
I groaned. I had heard this story a thousand time. And another thousand times.
"Really? I have never heard how you two met. Rebel never told me." Grace said, perking up.
"Well, I was twenty and I had a skateboard just like yours. I had been going to my friend's house when a car came out of nowhere and hit me. It was a pretty nasty fall, let me tell you. The car door opened and out came the most handsome man I had ever seen. Not that I noticed it then. All I knew was this guy had broken my leg. He was very reproachful as I glared at him. He took me into his arms and put me in his car and drove me to the hospital."
Both Grace and mom had a dreamy look in their eyes. I was on my fourth cookie and contemplating if I could manage a fifth.
"In the hospital, he paid for everything. He introduced himself and told me that he had been late for a very important interview and had been driving really fast for that reason. He drove me home after everything and apologized to my parents. My parents fell in love with him immediately. He visited me every day since that day on. Until I had to have my plasters taken out. By then I had mellowed down and developed a healthy crush on him. While we were on our way home, he nervously asked me out and the rest is history."
Grace sighed. "What happened to that interview?"
"Oh, he never made it. He was too busy taking me to the hospital. But he still tells me to this day that he lost one dream that day but gained a better one ."
"Awww, I never knew Mr. Gupta was so romantic. You just gave me relationship goals, Mrs. Gupta."
Mom just blushed. I decided to go for the fifth cookie.
