10: Sex Ed with The Doc
"Don't say dad." Kali demands, obviously already deducing what I am getting at.
"Well, none of us know who our angel dad is, right? What if it's the same angel for all of us." I explain.
"That seems unlikely." She dismisses.
"Actually, I think it's more likely. How many angels are out boning humans? It's probably one. One serial boner." Miguel announces, cracking himself up.
"This is not okay. I need to talk to Janine now." Kali demands, stomping off.
"Come on Kali. It's not true." Thomas reasons, trailing after her.
"Nice one, Sara." Miguel congratulates, returning to his book.
"I'm not messing with them. I'm serious. We could all be siblings." I defend.
"If that's the case, you should be just as embarrassed as them. We both know how much you want to bone me." He muses, not bothering to look up.
"You're so full of yourself" I counter.
"Whatever you have to tell yourself." He taunts.
Huh, so annoying.
"I know you are." He responds.
"Stay out of my head, creep." I yell, while stomping off to my room.
"I can still hear you in there!" He calls.
"Ahhhhh!!!!"
...
We are gathered outside at dusk, in the early spring of Seattle, Washington. These flimsy clown pajamas are doing nothing to keep me warm. Imperviousness to cold is not an angel ability, apparently. Sasuke huddles beside me on the bleachers, and I feel warmth in my cheeks.
"Hey." I greet.
"Hi." He replies, giving me one of his beautiful smiles.
"Sorry about running off earlier." I apologize.
"No problem. I shouldn't have been procrastinating anyway. You look cold." He wraps his arm around me, having no jacket to offer. He's not a big guy. Only a few inches taller than me, with a lanky muscular build, but his arm fits around me nicely. The extra body heat is deeply appreciated.
Thomas and Kali are snuggled up in front of us with Kali practically in his lap. I scoot a little closer to Sasuke, the warmness in my cheeks intensifying. Ambien comes over and leans on my other side. I laugh in surprise, wrapping my arm around her. She is very petite, probably five feet. She nuzzles into my side like a child.
"Hello, everyone." I jump at Dr. Hemsworth's greeting. Ambien sits at attention, suddenly on edge.
"Hi." Sasuke greets.
I feel like we are doing something wrong and sit up a little straighter.
"Janine has informed me that when telling you, you're the children of angels, I may have oversimplified." She begins immediately. She's wearing a long fashionable coat that looks warm. "You see, angels do not have bodies like humans, so they do not have sperm. The egg and sperm were anointed in the presence of the grace of an angel. This process infused your genetic makeup with the grace of an angel. I would not say that makes them biologically a parent per se. You are not at the risk of birth defects if you were to procreate with one another I should say. Though to date I have not heard of a Nephilim conceiving, regardless." Dr. Hemsworth finishes, and I can't say that I am less confused.
"What are your questions?" she asks, filling the silence.
"We're like Spiderman?" Thomas asks, enthusiastically.
"What?" Kali scoffs, giving him a sidelong look.
"You know how in Spiderman; his DNA is infused with the spider's venom." Thomas explains.
"That is an apt comparison, I suppose. Thank you, Thomas." Doctor Hemsworth replies.
Thomas looks very proud of himself. I am relieved that my dad really is my dad, but I'm still confused.
"But you wouldn't say that Spiderman is a child of spiders." Miguel argues. Did he read my mind, or did he have the same thought?
"Well, that is true. This spider man wasn't bit in the womb, though. The spider venom wasn't an integral part of the fetal development of the child. I have conceded it was an oversimplification but 'the children of angels' is the most appropriate terminology. Your conception was angelic, and you are a product of the angel's grace that infused with your embryo. An angel's grace is comparable to human DNA. It is unique to the angel it came from and plays a large role in the abilities you express now. It is likely that the angel's grace you possess has the same abilities you do." She explains further.
"How is it that you know all of this?" Miguel demands.
"Like I have said before, Miguel, I was given this mission by a higher power." She replies.
"Yeah, but..." he cuts off suddenly, going still.
"So, no incest, then?" Kali asks bluntly.
"While I don't approve of a romantic relationship in this setting, Kali, you are correct. Even if it were the same angel that gave you and Thomas their grace, it would not be incestuous for the two of you to fornicate." Dr. Hemsworth confirms. I can see Thomas's cheeks go red at the word, fornicate.
"See, Sara. You just have a dirty mind." Kali accuses.
I glare at her, slyly. "I don't know. If you two have the same angel DNA, I would say that's angel incest." I tease, making myself blush a little.
"Aren't all angels, brothers and sisters, or something?" Kali ponders.
A bolt sails past Kali's head. I catch it before it sinks into Sasuke's shoulder, surprising myself.
"Time for dinner." Janine announces. Dinner, ugh, that reminds me.
"Wait! What poisons an angel?" I ask. Janine levels her cross bow on me. Dr. Hemsworth raises her hand.
"Nothing poisons an angel, but all of you are susceptible to the same poisons as any other human. The effects will simply come on faster and stronger and end sooner." She responds.
"We can still get drunk then! Heck yeah!" Thomas cheers.
"Damn it!" he hollers, as one of Janine's bolts sticks in his chest. Thomas and Kali vanish.
I am swept up into Sasuke's arms and he's off, like a bullet. I try to focus on teleporting, so he doesn't have to carry me, but I can't stop thinking about how I wish I could bring him with me.
"Wow." Sasuke exclaims.
"Huh?" I open my eyes and we're in the cafeteria and I'm still in Sasuke's arms. "Oh."
"I didn't know we could do that." Kali comments, staring at us in awe.
Sasuke lets me down.
"Thanks." He says, grinning at me.
I grin back, feeling pretty pleased with myself.
"I am sick of this shit." Miguel complains, walking in, with a myriad of arrows sticking out of his back.
Ambien comes up behind him and gleefully plucks each bolt. She takes all the bolts over to the food table and starts skewering apples on them.
"Candy apple." She offers, holding one up proudly.
"Gross. You both are getting blood everywhere." Thomas complains in disgust. His own chest is covered in blood from where Janine shot him. It is a wonder that this place isn't completely disgusting. Is there cleaning staff? The only staff I have seen are Janine and the doctor, which is not normal. I know from my few visits to see mom in places like this. There were multiple mental health techs, cleaning staff, and cafeteria people coming in and out.
The idea of eating is still kind of revolting, but I am hungry. I put a couple things on a tray and go sit down beside Sasuke. I feel myself falling asleep as I try to eat my sandwich.
"Long day, huh?" Sasuke comments, noticing my narcolepsy.
"Longest of my life." I reply, resting my head on my hand and giving up on the sandwich.
"You believe me now?" Miguel asks.
"Hmm?" I ask sleepily.
"You heard her. She called us Nephilim. Haven't you read the bible? The Nephilim are the children of demons and humans." He declares.
"No. I am pretty sure its angels and humans. I think I saw it on TV." Kali mocks.
Miguel scowls at her.
"You would believe a TV show over a book." He chastises. "I can't understand how you can all be so complacent. They're demons and I am going to prove it, even if it kills me." Miguel announces, dramatically.
