Chapter Twenty-Five
Since James pointed out that it probably wasn't in their best interest to invite Adelmo and Sirius along for the day trip to the Quidditch match, with still some remaining tickets, Renata thought about inviting Remus. The poor man had often found himself excluded from a lot of the events because he wasn't nearly as involved as Sirius due to his own personal issues. There was the fact of him struggling to find work even though James insisted time after time that he would help him financially, but Remus refused. He wasn't having much luck with keeping a job and Renata understood that his lycanthropy was getting in the way, even if no one was discussing it.
Not to mention, it was clear that Remus was more than likely keeping his distance from the household unless he knew that Sirius was not going to be there specifically. He didn't want to run the risk of being stuck in the same place as him and be forced to interact. Renata found it to be such a shame that the two were still so divided in some aspects, especially when James told her stories about all of them back in their school times. She never really had any close friends growing up beside her brother and her parents, so she always found herself slightly envious whenever she listened to James' stories.
But she thought it would be a good idea to invite Remus to enjoy the day with them, even though she would have preferred it to be just her with James and Harry, she knew how much Remus meant to James, it was one of his brothers and Harry loved both of his "uncles." So, Renata encouraged James to invite Remus, even though he asked her a couple of times if she was sure. She replied each time that she was certain and as she was fixing her hair in her room, she heard the sound of Remus' arrival.
James automatically sounded happy to see Remus as too much time went in between their visits together and of course, Harry always greeted his loved ones with happy screeching, hugs, and laughter. It brought her to smile and be glad that she had gone through with her idea, she had a feeling that it was going to be a good day. With James, Harry, and Remus sounding like they were in a good mood and she was certainly more than excited to attend her first match, so she was ready.
The only thing that she had found slightly troubling was thinking about Adelmo and his situation with Sirius, along with her own conflicting thoughts about her mother since her discussion with James about missing out on Quidditch. Back then it didn't seem like such a big deal to her, although she remembered how disappointed she was whenever she heard her peers talk about matches. However, focusing on her academics had proven to work out well for her, she was incredibly smart and well-rehearsed within her knowledge of incantations.
But with James pointing certain things out, Renata couldn't help but feel like she had missed out on so much throughout her life. Focusing on the positives though, she was still young and she was experiencing at that point in her life from the beach to Quidditch, and she was doing all of it in good company too. She didn't want the day to start off to a bad start, even if she hadn't been given the best of news right away.
More importantly, her mind kept travelling back to the idea that James had gone out of his way to approach Adelmo to come up with a surprise for her. If that didn't make her feel special, really nothing would. It was unexpected and she found it so incredibly sweet, but it also left her with her own conflicting thoughts that had been plaguing her mind in the recent weeks working around James.
There was no use in denying it, at least, no use in denying it to herself, but she found herself very attracted to her boss.
Of course, it initially started off with her being attracted to his physical features because that was one of the first things she noticed when she first came to meet James back in the park. He was an extremely handsome man in so many ways that she would often lose count if she tried to name them all. She loved the way his hair was naturally messy and that he didn't bother with it, she found it adorable that Harry was following him with the same features. She liked the brightness of his hazel eyes and how she could see the smile in his eyes before she could see it appear on his lips.
Among other things, he had a nice body that she had seen plenty of without every anticipating. Perhaps it was from his school days of playing Quidditch or perhaps, always being on the move during the times of war, but James Potter was fit with lean muscle that suited him and his stature. His smile was contagious and she appreciated seeing it more than anything when it came to him expressing his emotions.
And that was all just the physical stuff, if she started going onto what she also found attractive about James, she would probably sit there all day. From his emotional strength to be there for the ones he cared about, his selfless nature to put others first before him, his undying commitment to see things through and not to mention, how sweet and caring he was, paired with that little mischief that never seemed to disappear.
All of those things among plenty of others made Renata attracted to him, but she would never dare to bring herself to act on those feelings.
It was the reason she had taken to addressing him as " Mr Potter " still, even as they grew closer as friends or whatever the relationship was between them. She figured if she started calling him "James" that she would just yearn for that closeness that she was probably never going to get from him unfortunately. Lily was James' first love and Renata assumed from the way he spoke about her and the way her death impacted him, that she would never stand a chance to even come close to be seen in a romantic light.
She was to be Harry's nanny and nothing more, and even though many would deem her foolish not to even try to pursue anything, Renata was thankful just to be involved in James' and Harry's life. Every day, she was thankful of that moment when she met them and thankful for the opportunity she was given to work with them. Even if she never got the chance to be something more, that was okay with her because seeing them happy and living better lives was an accomplishment in her eyes.
If only Renata understood that she wasn't the only one with conflicting feelings that were being restrained from reaching the surface.
To attend the match, James, Renata, Remus, and Harry had to travel to the home of the hosting team, which was the Holyhead Harpies that afternoon. Their home being on Holy Island located on the Anglesey Isle that was part of Wales, which was a beautiful sight, but held the chilling tales of all the shipwrecks that had suffered before the construction of lighthouses came to be later on. Harry thought they were going to the beach again when he witnessed all the water and was slightly disappointed when he realised they were going to a Quidditch match.
Probably because he didn't even really know what Quidditch was, but James was certain that once Harry witnessed the sport that he was going to fall in love with it.
Thankfully, he assumed the match between the Holyhead Harpies and the Kenmare Kestrels wasn't going to be as violent as he had witnessed in past matches with the home team. When the Harpies had played their rivals the Puddlemere United, he had witnessed people lose teeth, break all sorts of bones, and even the fans of both sides were so crazed sometimes that they had gotten involved to the point where riots broke out.
But since they were playing the Kenmare Kestrels, he assumed that everything was going to be fine. It would probably turn out to be more of a peaceful match of just good sportsmanship, or at least, that's what he hoped. Since it was Renata's and Harry's first match, he didn't want anything to ruin the experience for them.
With Harry occupied in Remus' lap in the stands, while babbling on about a leaf he had discovered, James was able to turn his attention to Renata. Her eyes were scanning the pitch that really looked like nothing more than an enclosed field, but the smile on her face, it was like she was staring out at a field of gold. Her gaze wandered over to where the three hooped goal posts were lined up at different heights before she peered over at him and caught him watching.
"You got one of the best teams for your first match," he told her quickly, not wanting her to think that he was staring at her. "The Holyhead Harpies have quite the interesting history, I'll admit."
"You mean being that they're an only female team?" Renata questioned, but she watched as he shook his head.
"I mean that's great and all, but besides that, this team has shared in some crazy moments in Quidditch history. They've been around since 1203 if that's not impressive enough, it makes them the second-oldest in the league."
"Who's the oldest?"
James rubbed his chin for a second. "If I'm not mistaken, I'm fairly certain that its their rival team Puddlemere United. I think they were established almost a hundred years before them. I could be wrong with my maths though so don't quote me on that. But have you heard the story about the match that lasted seven days?"
He always enjoyed the look on Renata's face when he presented her with information that she didn't know. She always looked so intrigued with what he had to say and she never dared to brush off anything, always ready to hear something new.
"Well," he continued after she shook her head," they were playing the Heidelberg Harriers, a fierce team from Germany. The match was brutal but neither side was willing to give in and take the defeat. So they played for seven days straight before the Seeker for the Harpies finally caught the Golden Snitch. The captain of the Harriers was so impressed by the Harpies captain and her strength that he proposed to her when the match finally came to an end."
"Aww," Renata cooed, " and did she say yes and they both lived happily ever after?"
"Not quite, I think she knocked him on the head with her broomstick and gave him a concussion."
"Oh."
It grew silent for a few moments as Renata didn't know how to respond to the ending of that story. She was caught up in the entire atmosphere of the stands as people were climbing to take their seats before the match began. People were greeting each other, laughing and having a good time, all the things she had always assumed happened during matches like the ones taking place at school. If this was what she missed out on for so long, that made everything so much worse to think her mother had kept her and Adelmo from the magical experience.
Suddenly, she was dragged out of her thoughts as Remus leaned over from where he sat to join in on the conversation among the adults.
"Don't let James talk your ear off about Quidditch," he told her with a smile, " he could go on for days. He used to torture us in the dorms."
"I did not!" James immediately protested. "I was simply educating you all and besides, I was not talking her ear off, I was just giving off fun facts."
"Oh yes, that's what it starts off as," Remus laughed, " fun facts. But then, he starts pulling out his pocket edition of Quidditch Through the Ages and once that happens, it's all over."
James was growing red as the teasing continued, but Renata was actually curious about the book as she turned to him.
"Do you really carry around a pocket edition of Quidditch Through the Ages?"
"No!" he blurted out quickly, however, after a few passing seconds, he sighed before reaching into his pocket. "Yes."
"Do you mind if I look it over?" she asked, holding her hands out with a hopeful look. "I'm not all too familiar with the sport, I have a few minutes before the match starts to familiarise myself with a few things."
"You don't need the book, just ask James," Remus interjected, " he has it all memorised, trust me."
Looking over his shoulder, James looked about ready to push Remus down the stands for exposing him in such ways, but he didn't realise that Remus was actually doing him a favour, because suddenly, Renata was pushing the book away and scooting closer to James. He turned back to look at her, surprised when she requested that he go over the rules for her.
Far too often growing up, he had bored or irritated people with his Quidditch knowledge, but finally, it was time to put it all to use and he couldn't have been happier. No one he ever really became friends with shared his love for Quidditch, not his friends, not even Lily, even if they all put up with his nonsense. However, he finally had the opportunity and he was more than ready.
And as he turned to face Renata, placing the book away, Remus couldn't help but smile as he kept Harry distracted so that the two could talk in private.
Renata probably learned more about Quidditch in ten minutes with James than she probably ever would by reading any book. He was just firing out information left and right, that she could hardly keep up but she couldn't bring herself to stop him and tell him to slow down for her sake. He looked so excited the more and more he spoke about it and then he got off track as he started telling her about times when he played and how much he missed it.
"Well, why not consider playing professionally?" Renata suggested at one point. "You seem to know so much and from what you've said and what Sirius and Remus have told me, you play extremely well. You should play!"
James didn't look so sure of that, especially as he peered over at Harry for a second. "As much as I would love that, it involves travelling and crazy schedules. I couldn't do that to Harry, he needs me."
"He has you," Renata said, " you'll still always be there for him and it won't hurt him if you go off and do things for yourself. I would bring Harry to all of your matches if you'd like, although if they do last for seven days or more, we might have to work something else out. But I think you would go for it. I think Harry would love knowing that his father is a professional Quidditch player when he's old enough to understand."
She sounded incredibly encouraging as they went back and forth, every time James gave her a reason not to do it, she gave him two reasons to do it. They were so wrapped up in the debate of him just even considering it that they didn't even noticed that the match had actually started. As soon as one of the Harpies zoomed past the stands on her broomstick, they both looked away from each other and saw that both teams had taken to the air.
The quaffle, bludgers, and the Golden Snitch were released and the match was set to begin. Immediately, they both lost interest in the conversation they were having and focused all of their attention on the players. Trying to remember everything that James had tried to cram into her head in such a short amount of time, Renata didn't even know where to look first. Her eyes flickered to two players that were watching each other intently while also glancing around as if they were in search for something.
She had to assume they were the Seekers of their respective teams and that started off her mission of identifying each of the players. The Beaters were easily identifiable by the bats they carried in their hands as they kept their eyes out for the bludgers to either dodge or send directly at other players on the pitch.
In front of the goals, Renata identified the Keepers, which left the remaining players as the Chasers and she honestly felt proud of herself for even getting through that much. Half the time, she was just following the quaffle or at least trying to, but it ended up with her becoming slightly dizzy from going back and forth.
At one point, Harry crawled across the laps of the three before settling in Renata's arms to watch the match. However, there was a moment in time where he grabbed a lock her hair and gently tugged on it to direct her attention to what he was looking at.
"What is it, Harry?" she asked, pulling his little fingers off her hair. "Do you see something?"
With a happy squeal, Harry pointed in the distance and while she didn't see anything at first, she squinted her eyes until she spotted a flash of a glimmering gold before it vanished. She peered down at Harry who clapped his hands together in triumph before he started looking around again.
Little did she know she was holding a natural Seeker in her lap at the time.
While it was difficult for Renata to actually keep up with the match with all the movement, she was thankful that she could rely on the commentator and the scoreboard to help her. So far, the score was 50-20 with the Holyhead Harpies in the lead. And while they had a twenty point lead, Renata knew that it could be anyone's game if the Golden Snitch was caught as James informed her that it was worth 150 points.
Every so often, Harry would start clapping her hands and she figured it meant that he had spotted the Snitch, which brought her to laugh, thinking that they might as well place him on a broom to help the Seekers. She was busy watching one of the Chasers of the Kestrels steal the quaffle and make a race towards one of the hoops when a noise brought Renata to turn her head.
CRACK!
It was a cracking noise that Renata had never heard before and as she turned her head to investigate, she immediately regretted it. As soon as she looked, she could see one of the Holyhead Chasers with her hands over her face, but her hands couldn't stop the blood that was gushing out of her mouth and nose at the time. Immediately, Renata shoved Harry into James' arms as he had been in mid-conversation with Remus.
He was confused as to what she was doing as he peered down at Harry first, however, as he looked over at Renata to ask what was going on, it was too late. She had already fallen out of her seat, the woman on the other side of her in the stands, catching her before she actually hit the floor. People were gasping and standing up around them, thinking that she was hurt or that something was wrong.
James believed that something bad was happening too until he saw the Chaser with the bloody face making her way to the ground to be healed. It such a short amount of time, hardly anyone was watching the match as the attention seemed to be drawn to the woman that had passed out so suddenly.
Handing Harry over to Remus, James was able to move fast and take over to help Renata, however, she didn't seem to recover as fast as she did when it had happened the last time back in the park.
She wasn't waking up at all.
