mark walked in the empty streets of seoul at night, looking for any human being not respecting the curfew set in place.
these days, with the pandemic going on and getting worse, the authorities had announced that a semi-lockdown and a curfew would be set in place. then, only children going to school and adults going to work could leave their house – with a handmade authorization of course – and they all had to be home before 9pm, time by when the curfew would start.
mark looked at his watch.
10:23 pm.
he sighed before continuing his way down the dead street.
mark was a policeman. well, a new one.
the pandemic had accelerated the last year his formation, and so, he was made officer before he could fully finish the year. it seemed like a good thing at first, but now that he was assigned to check on seoul during the curfew, he had changed his mind.
mark stopped walking, sitting on a bench that was on the pavement for a while.
it's not like he was going to find anyone wandering there anyway. the curfew was well respected here. or so he thought.
mark's eyes locked with a figure walking far away, in the middle of the road. he blinked a few times, making sure it wasn't his lack of sleep playing on him, and stood up when he was sure there really was someone.
mark ran carefully towards the figure, making sure to be silent so that the person didn't run away from him.
when he was a few meters away, he realised it was a young boy, around his age, and that he was walking with his head hung low and his hands in the pockets of his hoodie.
mark coughed, standing in front of the boy and catching his attention.
"you aren't allowed to be here at that time of the day." he said simply.
the boy, whose eyes were deeper than the ocean, looked at him like a lost puppy.
"i'm a homeless. i live on the streets." he said simply.
mark was a bit taken aback by the sudden declaration, but he stayed serious.
"you don't have a home?" he asked.
"that's what 'homeless' means, yeah." the boy answered immediately.
"do you have your id?"
the boy fumbled in the pockets of his pants and took out a card which seemed to be completely broken and old.
"i couldn't make a new one since i was 10." the boy mumbled, handing the officer his id.
mark looked at it, seeing the picture of a young boy, looking similar to the one he had in front of his eyes. his eyes wandered to the name engraved in the card. 'lee donghyuck'.
"well. huh... okay then." mark said awkwardly, not really knowing what he could say more.
"can i go now?" donghyuck asked, taking his card back.
"i guess." mark said. "goodnight donghyuck."
the homeless teen's eyes widened for a second when the officer pronounced his name, but he recollected immediately, lowering his head again.
"goodnight."
and with this simple word, he walked away, leaving mark alone, in the dark, in the middle of the empty street.
♡
a few nights after, mark found himself walking in the same street of seoul, almost at the same time of the night. sure, he had been assigned to check on this part of the city, but he also wondered if he would see the homeless boy again.
he walked around, checking his surroundings, more looking for donghyuck than actually doing his job. but he didn't mind. no one would go out anyway.
mark stopped near a park where he could hear water moving and splashing around.
he walked inside the park, in direction of the noise when he saw him again.
donghyuck was seated next to a basin, his hands occasionally plunging in the water before he rubbed them against his face.
mark approached the boy slowly, not wanting to scare him off.
"hello donghyuck." he said simply, earning a little cry of surprise.
"oh. goodnight officer." the boy replied.
"what are you doing?" mark asked curiously.
"isn't that obvious? i'm washing my face."
mark nodded simply, watching the boy rub his face with his palms gently.
"what will you do after?" mark asked curiously. he didn't know why he was speaking to this boy, but something had drawn him to donghyuck, and he wanted to know more about the boy.
"go to sleep." he replied.
"oh, okay."
mark stayed in silence as donghyuck got up on his feet and dried his face with the hem of his sweatshirt.
"well... huh..." donghyuck started, head hung low. "goodnight officer."
donghyuck turned around, leaving towards god knows where, but he was stopped in his steps by the officer.
"mark."
donghyuck faced him again, his brows furrowed adorably.
"my name is mark." the officer repeated.
"goodnight mark then." donghyuck said before leaving for good this time.
"goodnight donghyuck."
♡
the next weeks were pretty much similar.
mark did his rounds at night, in his district of the big and empty city, and he would often meet donghyuck.
at first, they didn't see each other soon.
mark would find donghyuck in the park or simply walking in the streets once or twice a week at first. and then, with time going on, they met more; three times, four times, five times a week.
they didn't exchange much words when they met.
mark simply watched the homeless boy doing what he wanted to do, and he would occasionally ask him what he would do or where he would go, but the conversations never lasted. they always stayed in a comfortable silence.
not that they minded though.
something had blossomed between them.
was it the fact that none of them wanted to be out there, at that time of the day? or was it the fact that they both needed someone to rely on?
they had no idea.
but they perfectly knew that they had grown fond of each other and those night meetings.
♡
"mark, your shift is cancelled tonight."
the officer raised his head, looking at his boss that had just entered the office.
"pardon?" he asked, not sure of what he heard.
"the weather has been horrible today, winter is there, the streets are under a dozen of centimetres of cold ice snow." his boss explained. "no one would even dare stepping a foot outside. you can go home and have a warm evening."
mark watched his boss leaving to talk to someone else.
he didn't have to work tonight. that was good news.
mark finished the file he was working on before shutting his computer off and grabbing his stuff to go back home.
mark walked towards the exit of his working place, zipping his jacket to his chin before opening the door. he was met by a freezing wind, which made the tip of his nose redden immediately, and a completely white street. the view made him record his old life, back in canada.
so, his boss hadn't lied when he had said it had been snowing.
mark looked around, noticing that the snow was still intact, meaning no soul had walked around. and this seemed logical. who would walk out when it's this cold?
but that's when it hit him. donghyuck.
the poor boy was a homeless, meaning that he lived in the streets whether the weather.
and right now, he might be freezing to death if he was only wearing the same black hoodie he always had.
mark didn't hesitate a second before running towards the street where he always met donghyuck.
the adrenaline in his veins had made him forget completely how cold it actually was.
"donghyuck!" he screamed, looking around.
"donghyuck!"
mark ran to the park, searching for the boy everywhere, but never finding him.
"donghyuck! where are you?!"
mark continued to run around, getting more and more worried as the minutes passed.
what if donghyuck had already died of cold by now?
"DONGHYUCK!!" he yelled, louder than ever.
"DONG- "
mark furrowed his brows when he saw someone in a foetal position under the porch of a building.
he ran towards them, all his worries vanishing when he realised it was donghyuck.
"donghyuck! here you are!"
"m-m-ma... m-mark..." the boy shivered; his face paler than ever.
"come on, you can't stay here." mark said.
"i-i h-have n-no... n-no p-place to g-go..." donghyuck told with difficulty.
"you're coming to my house." mark said without a hesitation before pulling the boy up.
donghyuck walked alongside mark, the officer holding onto the homeless very tight because of his incessant trembling that almost prevented him to walk correctly.
after a few minutes, they were inside mark's house.
mark brought the boy to the couch and switched all the heaters on immediately.
"don't move, i'll run you a hot bath."
and with that said, mark disappeared in his house, leaving donghyuck shivering on the sofa.
he was back after a few seconds with a comforter.
"here." he said, placing it around donghyuck. "is it better?"
donghyuck held onto the comforter tightly and nodded.
mark got to check the bath and came back to tell donghyuck it was ready.
the homeless boy stood up with difficulty and so, mark carried him to his bathroom, the homeless boy's legs and arms wrapping around the source of heat.
mark sat donghyuck on the furniture next to his sink.
"you need to undress to get in the water." he said.
"d-d-do it-t." the other replied, looking in his eyes with a lost look.
mark didn't hesitate to pull the hoodie and long-sleeved shirt off donghyuck and he also took his pants off.
"i'll leave you in your boxers so that you aren't uncomfortable."
with that said, mark placed the frozen boy inside the bath tub, smiling when he saw him relaxing completely.
"i'll pick some warm clothes for you, okay?"
donghyuck nodded with a pout, making mark's heart melt.
mark did as he had said, and he came back next to donghyuck while the younger enjoyed the hot water.
after long minutes of staring at each other and exchanging a few words, the water became cold, and donghyuck judged it was time for him to step out of the tub.
he stood up and let himself being cuddled into a big towel.
mark left the room to let him get dressed.
donghyuck opened the door quickly and walked to the living room, where mark was.
"do you feel better now?" mark asked, patting the place next to him on the sofa.
the boy nodded shyly, sitting close to mark.
"i was scared you would die in the cold." mark told. "i didn't want you to freeze to death." he added, circling his arm around donghyuck's shoulder and pulling him against him.
donghyuck snuggled into his touch, feeling even warmer because of the body heat.
mark noticed how donghyuck was trying to glue his body to his own and so, he picked the light boy up and sat him on his lap, facing him.
donghyuck's eyes widened at the sudden move, before he hugged mark againg, feeling warmer than ever – surely because of the blush that had appeared on his cheeks too.
"thank you." he mumbled. "for everything."
"it's nothing, donghyuck." mark responded, hugging the boy back.
"it means a lot to me."
mark smiled at the boy. "i took a liking to you. i could never let you outside alone like that."
donghyuck shyly pulled away from the hug and placed a chaste kiss on mark's cheek.
"thank you very much." he said, his puppy eyes never leaving mark's.
with those words being exchanged, the two boys found themselves face to face, their eyes locked with the other's and unconsciously getting closer.
it was only when donghyuck felt mark's hot breath on his lips that he realised their position, causing him to look down at the officer's lips before mark pulled him into a deep kiss.
the kiss was nowhere near dirty, but it provided donghyuck so much warmness that he wanted to kiss mark all night.
mark held onto the homeless boy tight, his lips moving slowly against donghyuck's as they kissed passionately.
fireworks exploded in both their chests as they realised that both boys had found someone to rely on and provide them warmth.
once they parted, their eyes never left each other, and small smiles appeared on their lips.
"i like you." donghyuck whispered.
mark smiled even brighter. "as crazy as this sounds, i like you too, donghyuck."
♡
the next morning, mark shut his alarm off as soon as he heard the loud ringing.
he laid back on the bed, looking at donghyuck who was clutching onto him in his sleep.
what a cute sight to see.
mark wouldn't mind waking up to that every day.
mark managed to pull out form his baby's embrace without waking him up which allowed him to do his morning routine and get ready for work.
as soon as he was ready to leave, he walked back to his room, finding donghyuck sleeping in a ball, holding tight onto mark's pillow.
mark let out a chuckle before approaching him and caressing his hair softly, not forgetting to peck his forehead.
"enjoy your day, baby." he whispered in donghyuck's ear.
"mark...?" donghyuck asked, half asleep.
"sleep, sleep. i'm going to work, i'll be back in the afternoon." he told.
"where are my clothes? i'm not going to keep yours." he asked, waking up slowly.
"why do you want your clothes for?" mark asked.
"to go back where i live." donghyuck told low.
mark laughed, making the homeless boy lift his head to look at him.
"from now on, donghyuck, you're not a homeless person. you live here, with me. okay, baby?"
donghyuck didn't find the words to answer, completely astonished by what mark had just said.
"enjoy your day, baby. the house is ours from now on." mark pecked his lips before heading to his working place.
