Back from the Ashes
In the dimly lit room was a young woman sitting at her desk. Moonlight was mystically filtering through the open window. Candlelight was flickering and dancing in her eyes. The clock ticked midnight. She put down the quill next to the inkpot and stood up, scraping back her wooden chair. She slowly walked away, her light footsteps making the parquet creak softly. A letter was placed on her desk. A letter to her beloved. A letter she would never send, like the thousands ones she had carefully written each night.
"He's coming back. He's coming back tonight" She had repeated this same sentence over and over every night to convince herself since the day he left to war. But tonight it was different, she could feel it from the bottom of her heart. That's right. Tonight was different. She slowly rose her delicate arms and brought them back to her chest. Tonight was different. Tonight was their wedding anniversary, the 10th one since he left her alone in this big mansion. It was their meeting anniversary as well. Back then, he was so awkward, and yet she couldn't help but fall in love with him! And then, he grew stronger and was called to war... She stepped out into the garden and looked up. The atmosphere was eerie. High trees were surrounding the mansion and small droplets of rain were pouring. There was a little fog but the moon could be clearly seen. Its glow was almost bewitching that night. Tonight, tonight, finally... She started humming a strange melody. She removed her shoes and stepped in the fresh grass. Her jet-black long hair was fluttering as a gust of wind passed by. She took some strands and twirled them around her finger before putting them behind her ear. Her deep crimson eyes shone in the moonlight when she caught a glimpse of what she was looking for. She took one big rock in her hand and put it back upside down. A clever contraption was activated and vibrant green grass gave way to a hidden passageway. She closed back behind her and went down the stairs, slowly but surely, always humming the same melody. Tonight, tonight... She reached a room underground which sheltered sophisticated devices. At the center where there was an open-roof, bathed in the moonlight was a glass coffin.
"How are you today? You're as handsome as ever, honey". Her footsteps echoed loudly as she walked towards it. She stroked the cold glass while gazing at the lifeless shell lovingly. She smiled wryly. Reminiscences of a couple of years ago flashed through her mind.
It was a rainy night, just like this one. The chime of the doorbell rang. As her heart was pounding loudly, hoping for his return, she slowly opened the door halfway and shyly poked her head out. But her face distorted in pain once she understood what was going on. The chime sounded the end. She wasn't even listening to the man who was presenting his deepest condolences. All she could do was gape in shock. A single tear rolled down her cheek that fateful day. Somehow, they managed to recover the body in a decent state. "He didn't suffer much" had said the man.
From that day on, she had worked hard, really hard. And today, finally, he would be coming back.
She was humming the same melody over and over again with her clear chime-like voice as she was operating the devices.
The clock ticked midnight, the chime sounded the end... Tonight, tonight...
Moonlight turned crimson red and the glass shell shattered.
