Chapter 26: Ethan!

Song: Peter Manos - In My Head

Freya's POV

I looked over at Ethan to see him on his phone just typing away. "Whatcha doing?" I asked trying to make conversation. He shrugged, "Nothing really. I'm just searching around the web. Did you know that elephants can die of a broke heart," he replied.

I shook my head as I continued to drive, "I did not know that," I admitted.

He then stayed silent causing me to wonder more about his health than he was letting on. I needed to get him to a doctor. One our way down the highway, after a few hours, I stopped at a actual red lobster and Ethan, Hazel and I had dinner before Ethan took some more medicine. We were now back in the car and Ethan was fast asleep with Hazel on his lap.

Letting out a sigh, I couldn't help but think about how stupid Kai was. He's lucky I didn't shove that Gatorade bottle up his ass. I drove for about another 5 hours or so until it was a new day and the sun was now rising. I had no idea where we were or how we've survived on our own.

I pulled over to the nearest hotel and looked over to Ethan to see he was still sleeping but Hazel was wide awake. He then started to softly chatter. I listened as he was telling me he could smell Ethan was getting worse and was now shivering. I reached over to Ethan and felt his forehead only to feel his temperature was getting hotter. I quickly pulled up my phone and searched for a hospital. The nearest hospital was 2 hours away due to the location of the hotel.

Ethan wasn't going to last that long with this fever. I bolted out of the car, grabbed our bags and walked to Ethan side before picking him up bridal style. He let out a weak moan causing my heart to break. Using my powers, I held Ethan up a bit so he wasn't to heavy with the weight of the bags. Hazel hopped on and ran inside my hood before I slammed the door shut.

With all my energy, I ran up to the hotel, through the doors and up to the front desk. As I ran through the lobby, I could see some people staring at me from the corner of my eyes.

"Hello, how may I help you?" the guys asked a bit concerned but calm.

"I need a room with one bed. I promise I'll pay later but right now I need to get him under some cold water. He's burning up with a fever and the near hospital is 2 hours away," I rushed out.

He opened his mouth to say something but I cut him off, "Please," I begged.

He looked over to Ethan who was in my hands before quickly typing something into the computer and held a key-card in his hand. "Your room is on the second floor. Name?" he asked.

"Freya Grinsly," I stated.

He typed it in and passed me the key-card. I quickly took it from him before thanking him. He gave a small smile and I took off to the elevator. I made my way up to the second floor before running out and towards our room. I slide the card onto the door and unlocked it. Bursting through the door, I dropped the bags on the floor and placed Ethan on the bed as Hazel jumped out my hood before sitting next to Ethan.

A knock came from the door and I let out an annoyed groan before running to open it. To my surprise it was Kai who seemed to be out of breath. "Look...I'm sorry and-"

"I don't got time for this," I shouted as I ran back into the room where Ethan was laying and started to undress him.

"What's wrong?" Kai's voice came into the room.

"He's running a deadly fever and the nearest hospital is 2 hours away. If I drove him over there, he probably wouldn't make it," I stated as I left Ethan in only his boxers. I felt his skin again to see he was burning up even more. How was this possible?

"Start a cool bath," I ordered Kai. He quickly took off to the bathroom and I heard the water running.

I cupped Ethan's face only for him to flinch. "Freya," he cried as he opened his eyes. "I know. I'm going to try and lower your fever and once we do, I'll rush you to the hospital. It's 2 hours away," I spoke in a soft tone.

He shook his head, "I'm scared," his words came out soft but they hit me hard.

"Don't be. Everything is going to be okay," I replied.

A tear streamed down his face, "My body hurts."

I nodded my head, "I promise you'll get better."

Kai ran back into the room before looking at Ethan. He then reached towards Ethan to which I Ethan let out a shrieked causing him to stop before they come into contact.

"Ethan doesn't like other people touch him," I informed Kai as I tossed my phone on the bed and took off my sneakers, socks and hoodie.

Kai's eyebrow raise, "But you touched him," he stated a bit puzzled.

I nodded and I picked Ethan up bridal style before walking into the bathroom. "Yes, he has haphephobia and has learned to over come it to some extent. Since I am his sister and caretaker, he's learned to deal with it but not fully. This is why he swats my hand away most of the time," I explained.

"I thought it was just a friendly sibling thing," Kai admitted.

"No," I bluntly replied.

I stood in front the bathtub where the tub was filled up half way with cool water.

Ethan's hand grabbed my shirt as he had the look of fear in him. "It's going to hurt," he softly cried.

"I know but we need to lower your fever. If it makes you feel better, I'll get in with you," I offered.

He nodded his head.

I stepped into the tub causing my jeans to become soaked. I slowly sat down with Ethan in front me. He let out a cry along with a groan of pain. I bit the inside of my lips to stop myself from crying as I saw Ethan was crying. I cupped my hand to pick up some water and let it run over his face.

I watched as he shivered a bit and backed up into me. I wrapped him in a hug as he buried his head into the crook of my neck. I looked up over to Kai who was just staring at us. I couldn't tell what his emotion was or his thoughts since he had a blank expression.

For the next fifteen minutes, I spent the entire time bathing Ethan in cool water. I felt his forehead to see he was still burning up but not as much as before. I let out a heavy sigh as Ethan has now fell asleep in the tub in my arms. I felt sorry for him. Whatever he had was draining his energy.

I got up from the tub and picked Ethan up in a warm towel. Kai spread some hand towels on the ground since my clothes was soaking wet and I would slip across the tile floor. I walked out to the bedroom with Kai and Hazel trailing behind me.

I placed Ethan on the bed and dried him before switching him into dry clothes and tucking him under the covers. I grabbed Ethan's and my bag before emptying it out on the couch. I placed our clean clothes aside before shoving the dirty ones aside.

"I'm going to shower and see if they have a laundry around here," I mumbled before grabbing some clothes and heading to the bathroom.

I shut the door behind me and drained the bathtub before starting the shower. I hopped out of my wet clothes and into the shower before letting out a silent cry. Everything was falling apart. I know deep down Ethan is not sick. It's not some flu or cold he caught. It was something else. Ethan has gotten sick before but never like this.

After finishing my shower, I got dried and took a look at my foot to see the bottom was healed up but not fully. I put on a pair of soft soaks and walked out the bathroom before walking over to the bag with the dirty clothes.

"Hazel, watch over him," I spoke nodding to Ethan as I grabbed my phone. Hazel chirped a yes.

I walked passed Kai only for him to grab my wrist causing me to stop. I turned to look at him. "No offence but you put the squirrel to look over him?" he questioned.

I snatched my hand back, "Yes because he has more common sense than you and he is trustworthy," I hissed in a hush tone.

With that, I left the room and made my way down to the lobby. As I walked up to the front desk causing the guy to look up with a small smile.

"Is everything okay?" he asked.

"For now. I got his fever down a bit and he's sleeping now. Thank you and here's my card," I replied pulling out my credit card from the back of my phone.

"It's fine. Your room has already been paid for," he stated.

Ugh, Kai's bitch ass must have paid thinking everything would be okay again.

"Right, well do you have a laundry mat around here?" I asked.

He quickly nodded, "Yes and in fact, the hotel has one. Just walk past the elevator and take a left. Down the hall is the laundry room. Here's some detergent," he pulled out a small box of Breeze, a small bottle of Softener, and Clorox from a drawer.

I thanked him before making my way towards the room. As I walked in, I saw an elderly women across the room folding some clothes. Letting out a sigh, I walked up to an empty washing machine and sorted out the whites from the colored clothes before putting them both into separate machines. I filled all the machines with detergent before starting it. I pushed the start button and watched as the machine started to full up.

I took a seat on one of the benches and leaned against the side of one of the machine. Looking around, I saw the lady had already left. Letting out a heavy sigh, I buried my face in the palm of my hands. I bite my lip to stop myself from crying again as I thought about Ethan.

I felt a gush of air rush by me as someone was taking their seat next to me. I let out a groan knowing it's Kai.

"Kai, honestly, you should be in the room looking over Ethan as well with Hazel despite what I said. If you're hear to apologize, just forget it. I'm not in the mood," I mumbled as kept my face buried in the palms of my hand.

He didn't say nothing. The only thing I could hear was the washing machines in the room.

I removed my hand from my face and turned to look at him only for my heart to drop. It wasn't Kai. It was Victor.

I didn't say anything. I was honestly just over it.

"I'm not here to take you home. I trailed you for a while and figure I wouldn't reveal myself to you but I saw you carrying Ethan into the hotel with a panic and worried look. What happened?" he asked in a soft tone.

I suddenly burst out crying, "I don't know," I blurted out. He wrapped his hands around me and placed me on his lap before wrapping me in a hug. I buried my face into his shirt and continued to cry.

"He had a deadly fever so I had to put him in a cool bath. He's in so much pain and he's weak. The nearest hospital is 2 hours away. We weren't going to make it in time. I've taken care of Ethan before when he was at his worst but this is different," I cried, "I don't know what's wrong with him and he doesn't even know what's wrong with him. Victor, he told me he was scared. Ethan has never actually feared anything before."

Victor kissed the top of my head, "I know this is hard for you but I'm sure it's just his body's behavior to this chase or maybe the weather," he softly spoke.

I continued crying for a few minutes before finally calming down. Victor held me close to him as the time went on. We sat in silence not saying anything. The clothes finished wash and I got off his lap before taking them out the machine. Victor got up and joined me in as I started to transfer them to a drier.

We sat back down next to each other. Victor took my hand in his and glide his thumb across my knuckles.

"I can't stay for long," he spoke in disappointed and to be honest, I was too. "You wouldn't see or hear from me for a while. I need to take care of some things and I understand that it's not safe for you and Ethan. Just be safe and don't trust anyone. If you're ever in an emergency, text or call me and I'll be there as soon as possible," he stated as he was now cresting my cheek.

I let out a sigh and took his hand, "What if it's not an emergency?" my words came out almost breaking.

A small smile rose to his face, "Then I'll always be listening." He then leaned in and kissed my forehead before standing up. I got up with him knowing he was getting ready to leave. I know I wanted him away from us but I still do have feelings for him.

He seemed to have noticed how I felt since he pulled me into chest. I wrapped my arms around him and he did the same in return to me.

"It's all going to be okay one day and I promise, if you'd like, we will be a real couple and go on actual dates," his words came pouring out with warmth.

We pulled away and I gave him a small smile, "I'd like that a lot," I answered.

He gave me a small smile, "And remember," he kissed my forehead again, "I'll always love you no matter what happens," he whispered as he pulled away. He then reached on the side of the bench to the ground picking up a small gift bag. He passed it to me and I took it from his hand.

"You didn't have to-"

"I wanted to. The red velvet box is yours and the blue is Ethan's," he smiled.

I awed just how he also got Ethan something.

I pulled out the red velvet box and slowly opened it to see solid silver bracelet with five diamonds around it and in the center was a heart shape with the center missing like a lock. I looked closely as saw it had small engraved writing around the inside of the bracelet.

"No matter our distance, my heart will always belong to you," I read off followed by his name. I looked up at him and tackled him with a hug only for him to chuckle. "I'm guessing you like it," he chuckled.

"No, I love it!" I squealed as I took out the bracelet from the box and with to slip it on but it didn't fit.

"Victor," I frowned as I watched the bracelet didn't fit. "Fun fact," he stated before reaching into his shirt, "I have the other piece," he pulled out a necklace holding a key. He unlocked it and I snapped on the bracelet and squealed at how perfect it fit. (Picture of bracelet and key below)

"Thank you," I hugged him again. He returned the hug, "No problem. Just don't get stuck cause then I'll have to come and unlock it," he jokingly replied causing me to laugh.

The room fell into silence again. Victor then let out a sigh before pulling away. "I have to go now," I could hear the sadness in his voice.

I nodded my head and swallowed the new forming lump in my throat. "Remember what I said, be safe and trust no one," he kissed my forehead again causing me to close my eyes. "I love you," he whispered as he pulled away. I felt a gush of air ran passed me. A few seconds rolled by and I opened my eyes to see I was back in the laundry room by myself.

I looked down at my wrist smiling at the bracelet. I felt a little better I saw Victor and know he will be there if anything happens but it still bothers me that Ethan wasn't doing so well. I spend the next ten minutes waiting for the clothes to finish dry.

After they finished dry, I folded them and packed them into the bag. Grabbing the bag, I walked out the room, down the hall, took a turn and into the elevator. Making my way upstairs, I scanned the key-card letting myself back into the room. Walking into the bedroom, I saw Kai sitting on the chair on his phone. I looked over to Ethan who was still asleep.

Hazel ran up to me chattering telling me Ethan would just groan in pain and say his body was paining. I thanked him as I set the bag and gift bag down on the ground before walking up to Ethan's bedside.

I placed my hand on his forehead to feel he was a bit cool and shivering. His body temperature had dropped to much. This definitely wasn't the any cold or flu. I ran over and grabbed a warm hoodie and socks before dressing Ethan into it.

I looked over to Kai who was still on his phone. I a bit annoyed, I focused my powers causing his phone to fly out his hand and onto the floor. He bolted up in his seat before trailing his eyes on me.

"What was that for?" he hissed in a low tone as he picked up his phone.

I placed Hazel in the pocket of Ethan's hoodie before picking him up bridal style. "We got to get to a hospital now," I spoke in a firm tone. Kai quickly nodded before grabbing all the bags and hesitantly picking up the gift bag.

"Where'd you get this?" he asked.

"Gift shop," I lied as I walked out the door.

We took the elevator down and checked out before rushing to the car. Kai got into the driver's seat as I sat in the back with Ethan's head on my lap. Kai pulled up the directions to the hospital on his phone and raced down the highway since it was the fastest route. About an hour and a half down the highway, Ethan started to shiver a little before stopping

"It's going to be okay. We're almost there," my words came out more like a soft cry rather than a comforting gesture.

Ethan made no sound. My eyes widened, "Ethan?" I called in a loud tone.

No response. I felt for his pulse and listened for his heart beat.

It was slowing down.

"His heart is slowing down!" I cried.

Kai stepped on the gas even more. "No, just try to keep him up," Kai ordered.

"I'm trying!" i shouted as tears was now streaming down my face.

I checked his pulse again and my heart dropped as his pulse was now slower. It was as if he was hanging on for life.
