Chapter 1: Who am I?
Looking out through my bedroom window, I couldn't help but release a heavy sigh. I watched as the light breeze blew against the tree causing the leaves to rustle around. The birds chirps indicating it was a brand new day. A brand new day with the same daily routine all over again. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath in before exhaling. The quietness was quite soothing. I could only hear the sounds of nature.
I heard tiny footsteps coming up behind me and a small smile rose to my face knowing it was my little brother, Ethan. I opened my eyes and turned besides me to see he was already dressed for school.
He was only 12 years old in the 9th grade and yes, he skipped a few grades. He had his white shirt tucked into his jeans and his light brown hair combed back causing his turquoise eyes to pop out which was also my eye color.
He stood next to me and looked out the window with me. "Freya," he called.
I hummed in response and stood behind him before wrapping him in a hug. "I don't want to go to school today," his voice came out soft. I let out a sigh knowing why. "I know. I don't either but we have too. I promise, after I graduate this year, we can officially run away from this place and it would just be the two of us. I only have 2 months left," I tried to explain.
His shoulders slouched down and I knew he was sad, "Two months can be a long time," he mumbled. I kissed the top of his head, "I promised to look after you no matter what and that is what I will continue doing. Don't worry, we're almost there," I sighed.
Nodding his head, he continued to look out the window. Ethan wanted to leave this dump just as much as I wanted to leave. Nothing was wrong with the place. It was just the people we are surrounded by.
Ethan was born with the gift of wisdom. He is much more smarter than he lets on. This kid had the chance to attend NYU but decided to go through high school. Him and I had a long argument on why he shouldn't pass up the offer. As you can see, he won the argument. I don't even know how.
I on the other hand was born with the gift of nature meaning I can control the weather, including natural disasters and communicate with animal. No, it doesn't mean I can hear them speak. It just means I can talk to them, they understand and obey. I can also grow trees, flowers and heal animals who are wounded. Occurring to Ethan, I am "Mother Nature itself".
Having a power like this, you would think I would be happy...but I'm not. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful to do these things but sometimes I have trouble controlling it. For example, if I'm angry, the place will start to shake or if I'm sad, it would just constantly rain all day. Over the past years, I've pretty much learned to control it but not entirely.
Ethan is the only one who knows about my gift. Our parents aren't really considered to be the best. When I say considered to be the best, I mean they don't act like parents at all. All they do is just lounge around the house and drink whenever they want. They don't have jobs and quite frankly, I don't even know how we own this beautiful house. Ethan and I work at a restaurant after school so we try to save up in order to get out of this shithole sooner. Our parents don't even know we work. They think we're just going to some after school program or something which is really sad.
"Are you ready to go?" I asked looking down at him. He nodded his head before turning around and giving me a hug. "I hate Mondays," he huffed into my sweater.
"Same here bud. Same here," I replied as I hugged him back.
After a minute, I grabbed my phone from my bed and my backpack from the desk before heading downstairs. Ethan walked behind me and we silently tip toed down the stairs not wanting to put up with our drunken parents. We quietly made it outside and I locked the front door behind me.
"Do you want us to take the car or walk?" I asked turning to look at him. He looked up at the sky before turning to me, "Let's walk. It's a nice day plus the breeze is blowing," he chirped. I nodded my head and we started to walk to school. The school was a 10 to 15 minutes walk which was pretty good.
As we walked down the sidewalk, the bush ahead of us started to move then stopped. A squirrel came out and I turned to see Ethan with a smile on his face. This squirrel is names Hazel. Ethan named him that since his fur color was hazel itself. Everyday, Hazel would come out and walk with us to school. It doesn't matter what type of weather it is, he is always there.
"Morning Hazel," I chirped as we got closer to him. He chattered his teeth towards my direction and I understood he was saying good morning. "Hazel!" Ethan squealed. Hazel scurried over to him and Ethan kneeled down and took up Hazel before placing him on his shoulder. We began to walk again.
"How was your weekend?" Ethan asked.
Hazel started to chatter and I translated what he was saying, "He says that his weekend was good excepting Saturday night because the wind was blowing to hard and it made it harder for him to store food."
I glimpsed over to Hazel who was staring at me. I raised my hand up in surrender, "Look, just cause I can control the weather doesn't mean I did it. I like to let nature run it's course itself you know," I admitted. He started to chatter again but it was more like a yelling with a bit of ranting.
"No, I'm not going to change the weather for your own gain just so you can store more nuts for winter and what are you complaining about, winter isn't till December. We're in March!" I argued.
Yup. This is pretty much how it goes. A human arguing with a squirrel.
He chattered some more and held up his tiny hands as if it was a fist. I rolled my eyes, "I told you once and I'll tell you again. The only reason that bird attacked you is because you threw a acorn at it. I also warned you not to and what did you do?" I asked looking at Hazel.
He chattered and I nodded, "Yes, you threw it. I swear, you're one of the most violent squirrel I've ever met," I admitted.
Angry chattered came from him and Ethan burst out laughing. Even though Ethan couldn't understand what Hazel was saying, he had some sort of idea. "Yes you are," Ethan agreed with my statement. We walked the rest of the way to school making jokes and laughing but deep down, I hoped today would somehow be a different day. Not for me but for Ethan.
As we got closer to the school, Ethan picked up Hazel from his shoulder and placed him on the ground. "I'll see you tomorrow," Ethan chirped before patting his head like a dog. Ethan then gave me a hug and I returned the hug before he started to head towards the school entrance.
"See you at lunch," I mumbled. He hummed in response before walking away.
We go to the same school but I don't like when people see that he's with me because then they pick on him. You see around this school, everyone refers to me as "The Freak". Ethan argues about how he doesn't care but I don't like for him to be picked on. I heard some chattering from Hazel and I looked to see he was standing next to Rio. Rio was a fly. Yes, you heard me right. He's a fly.
Although Rio was small, I could still hear what he was saying. "Rio, nice to see you," I greeted him. He buzzed back as a hello.
"Please keep an eye out for Ethan," I nodded towards Ethan who was now walking into the school. He said a few words before flying to Ethan. Yes, I have a fly watch over Ethan so that if anything goes wrong, Rio would just come find me and lead me to Ethan.
I said my goodbyes to Hazel and headed into school to my first class which was Chemistry. Imagine the pain of having Chemistry early in the morning but I had to choose either to have it in the morning or evening and deciding that I didn't want to die at the end of the day, I chose morning.
Walking down the halls, I received a bunch of stares from students along with some whispers here and there. "Here outfit doesn't match her personality," someone whispered and I let out a groan of annoyance.
They don't even know me yet they judge me. I was currently wearing a blood red skinny jeans with a floral shirt and eggshell cardigan. My long light brown hair was naturally curly was down. I continued down the hall ignoring all the comments that was being made behind my back. It's funny how they can all say it behind my back and not to my face. (Outfit below)
Walking into my Chemistry class, I received a bunch of other stares and I made my way to the back of the classroom. I placed my bag on the empty seat next to me and sat back in my chair as I browsed through my phone. I decided to check up on my grades to see if I was missing something and surely enough, I wasn't. Everything was either B+ or A-.
I logged out the site and logged into Ethan's account. He was all caught up on everything and had better grades. He had all A+. Sometimes he likes to rub it in my face and honestly, I don't mind. I would too if I was him.
The bell rang and my Chemistry teacher walked in. I shoved my phone in my pocket and pulled out my notebook and pencil. Today was surely going to be a long day.
~~~~~~~~~~~
A few hours had passed by and I found myself sitting in math class near an empty seat. I love how no one sits next to me in every class. I honestly don't care what they think about me or say. I'm just glad I don't have to communicate with them. I looked at the times to see it was almost lunch. I gathered my things and stood up only for the bell to ring. I made my way out the classroom and headed down the crowded hallway towards the lunchroom.
I stood aside by the door and pulled out my phone to see Ethan should be here any minute now. For some reason, he always like to sit with me at lunch no matter who would talk about it. A few minutes passed by and I decided to call him only for his phone to go to voicemail. I knew immediately something was wrong.
Jogging my memory, I remember Ethan's last class before lunch is history which was on the opposite side of the school. I ran down the hall and took a left before going through a pair of double doors. The hallway was pretty clear now since everyone was either in class or at the cafeteria.
A buzzing came next to me and I saw it was Rio flying around. "Where?" I asked.
He fly passed me and I followed him down the hall. You would think that I would lose sight of a small fly but I don't. You see my powers over nature also helps me to track animals if needed. It was honestly pretty weird. Rio turned the corner and I followed him only to see a bunch of guys shoving Ethan against the lockers.
Anger took over me and I quickly ran over before pushing the guy off Ethan. I turned to Ethan who had a look of fear over his face. "Are you hurt?" I asked in a soft voice causing him to look up at me.
He shook his head and I turned around to see 2 idiots laughing at him. I recognized who they were since they were also in 12th grade.
"Has your big sister come to save you?" Cain mocked in a baby tone as he looked behind me where Ethan was standing. Within a swift move, I kicked him in a balls and watched as he let out a groan and cup them before falling face first into the ground. His friend, Kevin, kneeled next to him.
"You bitch," Cain hissed in pain.
I glared at him, "The next time you touch my little brother, I'm going to make sure to kick you harder until it's no longer attached," I warned and gentle took Ethan's hand before walking down the hall. "You're lucky I can't hit you. Just you wait until I get Ashley," he shouted as I turned the corner.
"I'll be waiting," I shouted back in anger. We quietly walked down the hallway and I glimpsed over at Ethan who was just fidgeting with his thumbs. "Are you okay?" I asked in a soft tone.
He nodded his head and looked up at me, "I'm sorry," his voice came out ever so gentle with a bit of hurt in it. My eyebrow rose in confusion, "Sorry for what?" I asked.
He stopped in his steps and let out a sigh, "I called him a jerk because he called me a know it all smart ass. I didn't mean for you to get involved. Now Ashley is going to-"
"Ethan, don't worry about it. They are just stupid and jealous that you're smarter than them. Don't worry about it," I gave him a reassuring smile.
He let out a sigh and I walked over to him and ruffled his hair causing him to groan in annoyance. He always hates when I do that. He swatted my hand away and fixed his hair. "Come on, let's grabbed some lunch," I smiled causing to smile a little. We walked into the cafeteria only to receive endless stares.
Ethan and I ignored it and headed to the lunch line. We grabbed two turkey sandwiches, two waters along with a couple of fruits and paid for it before walking back out the cafeteria. We headed outside the side door onto the football field. We then headed up our spot which was under a huge shady tree.
We made ourselves comfortable and sat against the tree. I passed Ethan his sandwich and water. He thanked me and I nodded. We silently sat there and ate our lunch. I heard some buzzing and looked over to see Rio. I placed a napkin in front me and opened the fruit cup. I took out a slice of watermelon and set it on the napkin. He thanked me and I nodded again.
We soon finish ate and I watched as Ethan laid on the grass with his hands behind his head. I looked at Rio who was just settled on the napkin. A butterfly soon fluttered around in front me and I watched as her wings were a beautiful purple and blue. I lifted up my finger and she landed on it.
She introduced herself as Flutter which I found ironic and adorable. "Nice to meet you Flutter. I'm Freya," I chirped.
Her wings soon started to flutter around and within seconds, a bunch of butterflies flew out from the tree and swarmed around me. I couldn't help but giggle at how beautiful they all were. I looked at Ethan who was now just staring at me with a smile on his face.
"Get him," I spoke to the butterflies. Ethan's eyes widened and within seconds, the butterflies went his way and landed on him. I burst out laughing as they took the shape as a crown on his head. I pulled out my phone and quickly snagged a picture. "That's not cool," he defended as I continued to laugh.
Lunch went by fast with a bunch of laughter's. Soon enough, it was time to head to our next class. Ethan and I had art together and lucky for us, it was outside on the soccer field which was not to far from where we were. We walked around the field to the other side. I looked beyond the field and saw some canvas and paint was set up in the middle. Walking over, our art teacher Ms. Jenny walked out from behind one of the boards.
"You two are early," she chirped with a smile on her face. "Well, we love art," Ethan chirped back as he went up to a white canvas.
Soon, other students start to join us on the field and I settled down in front a canvas next to Ethan. Everyone got settled down and Ms. Jenny started to talk.
"Today, we will be drawing our surrounding. Pick something and draw then paint it. We will be working on realism today so try your best. You will pass this assignment even if you can't draw. Just try your best, that's all that counts," she spoke in a joyful tone.
Everyone started to look around searching for something to draw then paint. I looked at Ethan who just shrugged and moved closer to me on the grass. "What are you going to paint?" he asked. I looked around and shrugged. I then looked at Ethan who was also looking around but his eyes stopped on a bird that was flying around the field.
He turned to me and I cut him off, "Don't worry, I got you," I mumbled. I whistled and I watched as the bird looked at me. I nodded and he flew over. I heard some gasp and I turned to see people giving me a weird look.
The bird flew over and stood in between Ethan and I. "Can I draw you?" Ethan whispered to the bird. The bird chirped and Ethan turned to me for translation. "He said yes," I replied.
"Thank you," Ethan thanked the bird. The bird chirped as a thank you. I looked around to see students were still staring at us. I sent them a glare causing them to quickly hid behind their canvas.
A butterfly flew in front me and I recognized it was Flutter. She sent a signal towards me and I nodded my head. Flutter heard about our art assignment and wanted to help me which I agreed to. A few more butterflies flew next to Flutter and landed on next to me.
"Hey, why don't the butterflies stand on the bird's wing so it's like they make up his wings," Ethan suggested. I couldn't help but grin at house genius he was. The butterflies did as told and Ethan and I started to paint away.
After about an hour, we finally had to finish up our work. Out of the whole class, Ethan had the best painting of realism. Everyone was astonished at how beautiful it came out. What can I say? My little brother's got talent. Since art class was Ethan's and I last class of the day, we headed home, ate and got dress for work before heading off.
Today was an alright way. I'm surprise I didn't even run into Ashley today which is a real shocker. Just thinking about her and Cain pisses me off. No one gets away with hurting my little brother.
