9- A walking disaster

Ahana scoffed when she saw the few people leaving as soon as they got their kids.

"They are colleagues yet there isn't a single ounce of hesitation while leaving. And here we, the total strangers, are busting our asses off to help and save them," Ahana grumbled.

"Do you want to leave?" Neer asked in a whisper. He still wanted to help but he didn't want to force his sister to do something that might harm them in return.

Ahana glared at Neer, "And leave you alone to face everything?"

"We are a team. Even if it means being stupid together," Ahana spoke, while lightly patting Neer's shoulder.

"We will have to hurry. It will turn out more hazardous if the fire meets the current filled water," Neer said, looking warily at the building.

Ahana puffed out some air from her mouth, while thinking of a solution. She turned her face away from the building and looked at Neer with determination.

"I need to go inside the building to completely stop the fire. Make a way for me to go inside without getting touched by that dreaded water," Ahana demanded.

"Will you be fine?" Neer asked for reassurance, knowing that his sister was about to expose herself.

Ahana nodded assertively, blinking her eyes to assure him that she was tougher than he thought.

"Okay. I will make a way but make sure to come back before the hole in the ground fills up again.

"Creating a rainbow has taken away most of my energy. I can't concentrate on both creating a path and drying the hole. So you will have to speed things up," Neer warned Ahana, before closing his eyes to gather his energy.

Drying up all the water was impossible, at least with the energy level Neer had. So they had to resort to the alternatives.

The researchers stumbled back in shock as the huge flow of water suddenly parted into parallel lines, creating space between them.

Their eyes went wide when a girl jumped out of the bush behind them and ran towards the building. She ran between the two walls created by water.

Taking a chance, Reyansh, the team leader too ran behind her in hopes to bring back the children through this way.

He was just behind her as she climbed up the stairs hurriedly. Without even glancing at the man behind her, she kept running towards the above floors.

Reyansh stopped at the tenth floor. They had successfully left behind the floors filled with water. But now in front of them was a huge blazing fire. He looked here and there, not knowing what to do. Going up meant getting burned but he couldn't just leave after coming so close to the kids.

His mouth was left agape when the girl walked right into the fire fearlessly. He was screaming inside but no sound came out, as he was shocked beyond belief.

The girl was on fire, every part of her body was in flames yet there wasn't a single sound of her wailing in pain.

Still covered with flames, Ahana ran up the stairs, leaving greyish black particles behind as the fire died out on the tenth floor.

Fire started disappearing from the areas she passed, all the while joining her body. By the time Ahana reached the 13th floor, she looked like a walking disaster.

Scream left from the kids' mouth as they covered their faces in fear. Sameera stumbled a little in shock looking at the spectacle with wide eyes.

"Kids, this way," the team leader shouted and started guiding them downstairs.

"Dad...wh..what's this?" Rewa stuttered in fear.

"I don't know but she is here to help," Reyansh answered while looking back at the burning girl.

Reyansh then guided everyone to form a single line as the path between the water walls was narrow.

"Who..?" The team leader looked at Sameera with a question-filled gaze.

"A nobody," Sameera answered vaguely, before moving towards the kids to avoid any more questions.

They all rushed downstairs, while from time to time looking upwards with fear and curiosity.

An embarrassing scream left Sarah's lips when she saw the unknown girl following them. Everyone stopped on their tracks and turned towards the reason behind the scream.

Most of the fire had gone inside Ahana's body but the ends of her hair were still on fire, giving her a scary yet enticing look.

"What?" Ahana threw her arms up in the air in frustration.

"I need to get down too," Ahana huffed when she saw everyone still staring at her with wide eyes.

"Stop staring and start moving. These walls wouldn't stay upright for a long time," Ahana commanded.

Right on cue, everyone turned and started descending down at a high speed.

Neer had come out of the bush too, startling the already scared researchers.

"Don't mind me," saying this, Neer went near the water wall, as it would be easier to operate on water while staying close to it.

He prayed internally that Ahana would hurry as his body was giving up. Diverting such a huge flow of water in addition to creating a rainbow; his body was already overworked. Neer just hoped that he would be able to stay conscious until his sister was back safely.

"Oh my God!" Kriti, the youngest researcher, yelled in awe, as she looked at the girl in the 13th floor balcony, absorbing all the fire.

Neer relaxed as he knew that Ahana would be back in no time. He was already down on his knees, unable to keep standing with his depreciating energy.

Payal ran towards him, "Please don't give up. Please the kids would come out soon," she requested, while wiping Neer's sweat from his forehead.

Neer nodded slowly, trying his best to keep his eyes open.

He forced himself to regulate the walls as kids started pouring out of the building and finally slumped down after seeing Ahana's face.

"Shit!" Ahana cursed, before looking at the elders present there.

"Help me to take him away before the walls fall and water drowns us all in its current." It wasn't exactly a request, but Ahana's pleading eyes let them know that the girl didn't know the art of pleading.

Team leader and another researcher came forward to pick Neer and hurried backwards. If only they had been a second late then, they would have been electrocuted.

"The hole is about to be filled up," Sarika, a middle-aged aged researcher, said with a worried filled voice.

"I will create another one," Avan blurted out without thinking.

Realization soon dawned upon him and he looked at his mother with scared eyes.

"It's okay. Just do it," Payal assured him, while looking daringly at everyone, warning everyone to not even think of harming her child.

"Create the holes towards the right as the villages have already emptied out on that side," Ahana directed, having already seen people evacuating the area.

Avan nodded and requested the ground to open up. Many holes were created. Now the only thing left was to direct the water towards those holes.

"How will we direct the flow of water?" Rewa questioned, looking hopefully at the fire girl.

"Not my job," Ahana muttered while looking at her unconscious brother.

"Who was the one who made the kids float?" Ahana asked and the kids' eyes went towards Sameera in an instant.

"Blow up a huge wave of wind, and change the direction of the water," Ahana suggested.

"I don't know how to use my powers properly. You all saw the outcome," Sameera shook her head, feeling sorry.

"Just try it. Unlike last time, it wouldn't cause any harm even if you fail," Sarah deadpanned.

Ahana there and then knew that Sarah was her type of person.

Sameera nodded albeit reluctantly and closed her eyes to concentrate, before blowing out air from her mouth.

It took 3-5 tries, but she eventually succeeded in diverting the flow.

Tension left everyone's shoulders, once they realized that they were now safe.
