20- Determination

Following Neer's advice, Sameera went towards Gyaan to request for the colourful book.

Gyaan looked at her silently for a few seconds, before standing up and gesturing to her to come a little away from everyone.

"What's wrong? Did you change your mind about helping me?" Sameera asked, tension clear in her voice.

Gyaan looked a little disturbed and less sure than before.

"It's not that," Gyaan reassured.

"Then?" Sameera looked at him with curiosity and nervousness.

"The twins couldn't perform their powers in the same way as it was written in the book. But I had concluded that it was because of their own immunity issues.

"However, even Avan can't fully perform his powers. According to the book, earth elementals had the power to create and protect their element," Gyaan said, while running his hand through his hair in frustration.

"So...you mean to say that we are different from the elements back then. And this colourful book is of no use to us," Sameera stated, speaking the words Gyaan had left behind.

"Something like that. I can still find the list of what an Air element can do from the book. But whether you can perform it or not....we will have to find it through trial and error," he concluded.

"Sorry for giving you false hopes," Gyaan apologized, regretting his arrogance.

He had thought that he knew it all. But nature was here to kick his butt and let him know that he wasn't that great being.

Sameera rubbed her forehead in distress. The book was her last hope. However, Sameera had promised herself that she wouldn't give up.

"At least tell me the way they performed their powers. Let's try each one of them," Sameera said with determination.

"I like how you aren't giving up. But I am sorry to break this hope of yours too," Gyaan spoke, feeling guilty for not having a positive response.

"There were no tricks. Ancestors handled the power like breathing.

"We don't really think about our inhaling and exhaling throughout the day, do we?" Gyaan asked with raised eyebrows, "Unless of course if we have a clogged nose or we are doing Yoga." Gyaan finished with a chuckle.

Sameera gave him an unamused glare, not liking his humour one bit.

"Is there anything I can do? Or should I just remain useless?" Sameera questioned, not really hoping for a correct answer.

Gyaan showed her one finger, silently asking her to wait and mulled over everything.

Sameera bit her lips in anticipation as she stared at Gyaan who had a concentrated look on his face.

"Okay." Gyaan clapped his hands once, as the light bulb lit inside his brain.

"Let's sit down. This will take a while," Gyaan muttered, as he tried to find a nice place to sit.

Other than the chairs where researchers were or the tree where the twins had claimed the spot, there was no place that was suitable to sit. Upon failing to find a nice spot, Gyaan pierced his lips, thinking whether it was okay to just sit on the road.

Shaking her head at the egoistic guy, Sameera walked towards the twins and asked whether they could sit down beside them.

"We don't own the tree." Neer laughed, before hinting at Sameera to come and take a seat.

"You should have told us first that the idiot would also be joining," Ahana grumbled when she saw Sameera calling Gyaan to come over to their spot.

Both Gyaan and Ahana glared at each other until Sameera stopped them.

"Can you forget about your animosity for a few hours?" Sameera requested.

Seeing her pleading eyes, Gyaan relented but complained when he saw Ahana still glaring at him. Neer elbowed her, and finally got her to stop.

"Thank you," Sameera said and started explaining the situation to the twins in hopes that they would also contribute in helping her with their ideas.

"Do you have something in mind?" Neer questioned Gyaan.

Gyaan nodded, getting serious. "I was thinking that we should hear all the instances when Sameera used her power. Finding the similarities and differences between each time will give us some idea on how to proceed with her practice." Gyaan looked at three of them, waiting for a response.

"That's...that's actually a good idea," Ahana muttered, not believing her own self for agreeing with that guy.

"Sameera, are you okay with sharing?" Neer asked gently, not wanting to force her.

"Do you actually remember all the instances where you used your power?" Ahana asked, before Sameera could answer Neer's question.

"I don't mind sharing," Sameera answered Neer, before turning towards Ahana, "I just got my powers. There's only 2-3 instances, so it is not that hard to remember them."

"Good. So tell us about the time you used your power for the first time," Gyaan guided.

"I didn't use it," Sameera muttered. Seeing the confused faces, she let out a small chuckle, "At that time, I didn't even know I had any power. I was just trying to run away...."

Sameera then told them about what happened while getting away from her capturers and how she jumped off the cliff.

"I desperately wanted freedom. I was even ready to die for it, but somehow managed to fly towards the research building," Sameera completed her story with a faraway look in her eyes.

A palm clasped her palm, giving her warmth. Sameera looked to see Ahana providing her comfort, as Ahana's eyes showed nothing but pure respect for her.

"You are really strong," Gyaan said in a soft tone.

"And smart too," Neer added.

They let a moment pass, giving Sameera time to recover, before speaking up.

"So according to this, you didn't call upon the power. It helped you unexpectedly," Gyaan concluded.

"Yeah, I didn't even know that I was able to do such a thing," Sameera said.

"However, you tried to use the power while trying to save the kids, right?" Ahana questioned, remembering the floating kids and their sudden fall.

"Yeah, I tried to focus on the power, but couldn't make it work like I wanted. At last, the kids ended up falling," Sameera responded, still scared of what might have happened if the rainbow didn't save the kids.

"What about the third try?" Gyaan questioned, already having an inkling of what was going on.

"I detected the smoke of the twin's bike. Although it was just for a few seconds and I lost control again."

"What are you thinking?" Ahana asked Gyaan when she saw a thoughtful look on his face.

"Let me confirm one last thing. What were you thinking while all these happened?" Gyaan asked, looking at Sameera expectantly.

"I just wanted freedom and was ready to do anything for it. Even death didn't matter, if it meant being free.

"While trying to save the kids, I was scared for them and had put all my focus to try and control the power—"

Gyaan completed Sameera's answer, "—And in the third instance, you tried to focus on your power like before. But you weren't scared."

Sameera nodded in agreement.

"You all are seriously different from your ancestors," Gyaan muttered, while puffing out some air.

"What do you mean by that?" Ahana asked, taking full offense.

"You two can control your powers like the previous elements, but you don't have the energy to keep going and your body shuts down in the middle.

"Avan cannot control the earth at all. They are his friends and he requests for their help. Unless and until the earth elements are capable themselves, Avan cannot do anything.

"And Sameera, her power runs at its own will. She can only control her power for a few seconds. However, if it is the wish of her power then she can even perform the second hardest trick of her element," Gyaan informed.

"Second hardest?" Neer questioned.

"Flying for a long distance. It is the second hardest trick of an air elemental," Gyaan answered.

"What is the hardest part then?" Ahana asked curiously.

"Flying along with non-elements," Gyaan answered, and silence followed his answer.

"Explain to me clearly. What should I do? And how did you come up with this?" Sameera asked.

"You were determined to gain freedom. And for that, you even left the biggest fear out there- The fear of death. These two factors helped you fly.

"You may try controlling the powers like you did in the other two times, but it will not work for an extended amount of time. And you can forget about it working at all if you are scared.

"Sameera, from now on you need to focus on what you need to do. Think of the end result and work towards it without fear. Air will come to help you in the process. As long as you are determined, your power will support you.

"Your determination is the fuel to your power."
