10- We aren't superheroes

They all were safe but their building and years of work weren't. And there was nothing they could do unless and until the current switch was disabled. For that they had to enter the building again, which was in a hazardous state, ready to fall down anytime soon.

"I contacted the fire brigade again. They might be able to come within an hour, of course no promises because of lack of manpower.

"They have asked to evacuate this place as early as possible. They will contact us later to let us know the situation," Tej informed everybody.

While they all were discussing what to do and where to go, Ahana was trying to wake Neer up. He had to gain consciousness soon or else their plan of running away would be a failure.

Ahana knew that this was their only chance. They had to get away when these people were busy with their problems. She was certain that the moment these researchers were safe, the whole focus would turn towards their powers.

"Wake up, Neer," Ahana whispered pleadingly while patting Neer's cheeks.

Tensed Ahana was no joke. As more time went by, patting turned to slapping, causing Neer to sit up with a jerk.

"Are you insane?" He screamed, while palming his bruised cheek.

"Scream later. First get on the bike," Ahana instructed in a hurried tone.

Neer understood the urgency and tried to stand up fast. Unfortunately, he overestimated his pending energy, causing him to fall back with a thud.

First his scream and then his fall, both sounds were enough to turn everyone's attention towards them and for Ahana to start cursing.

"Why try to run away when you have done nothing wrong?" Rewa questioned, looking at them with a small comforting smile.

"They aren't exactly wrong in trying to run away. Afterall, a whole group of researchers is here. Who would want to become their lab rat?" Sameera responded, while going towards Neer to help him get up from the ground.

"Come on, my son is one of you. Do you really think I would do something like that? Or let any harm come towards him?" Payal asked, looking shocked by the accusation.

"Being a parent doesn't mean anything," Ahana scoffed.

"Excuse me," Payal was now enraged.

"Not everyone's parents are like us," Neer chided Ahana before apologizing to Payal on behalf of his twin.

"What did your parents do?" Reyansh, the team leader asked, already dreading the answer.

"Nothing like you are imagining," Ahana spoke, waving off his worry, before making it come back in full force with her next sentence, "They just threw us out in the middle of night, calling us monsters."

To say everyone was shocked was an understatement.

"Avan is lucky to have you. Please take care of him," Neer said to payal, before turning to leave with Ahana.

"Wait, don't go. If we are together then we can save the world. If technology and nature works together, then wonders can be created,"  Sarika, a middle-aged aged researcher, tried to stop them.

Ahana and Neer did stop in tracks but not because of the lady's words but because of Sameera's slow claps.

"There it is. I knew it. In the name of creating a better world, sacrificing a few living people doesn't matter to you at all, right?" Sameera glared at the lady.

"I think you are taking her words in a wrong way," team leader tried to explain, but Kriti, the youngest researcher interjected in an anger filled voice,

"What makes you so sure about us using you? I have been listening for a long time and it's enough now. You keep coming onto us. With what basis are you accusing us?"

Gesturing Ahana to support Neer's body now, Sameera moved towards the youngest researcher and looked at her with a calm and knowledgeable look.

"My 20 years of experience is the base behind my accusation," Sameera spoke, shaking the ground beneath the researcher's feet(not literally).

"Wh..what?" She stuttered her eyes wide with shock.

"I have been trapped for 20 years in a basement, being experimented on. It took another four years to plan and plot something to get out. I am an experienced lab rat under the hands of crazy scientists, so don't question my judgment." Sameera poked the youngest researcher's forehead with every word she spoke.

Payal came forward to get their youngest member away before standing up to Sameera.

"What happened to you was wrong, even despicable and I promise to use all the means to help and punish those bastards. But please don't accuse us because of a few faulty scientists. We take pride in our title. And have never once forced anyone for any experiment. Please don't compare us to them."

Sameera sighed, before responding to Payal's request, "Alright, I will not compare you to them. Just let us leave peacefully," she bargained.

"Being an experiment is different from trying to save the world. With power comes great responsibility. Even without any necessary means, we are trying our best. Then why can't you do that when you have the power to help?" Sarika tried again.

A new hope had been born inside her after seeing them. She knew that they could protect the world from getting extinct.

"Look lady, I think you are highly mistaken. We aren't superheroes," Ahana said loud and clear for her to understand.

Neer stopped Ahana from speaking and continued in a much more gentle tone, "We are really sorry but you are getting your hopes for nothing. We aren't that capable. Please stop trying to get our help and focus on finding a place for you all to stay safely."

"Why are you giving up before even trying? You have the opportunity to try and save the world. At least give your best, we can contemplate about the results later," Tej argued.

"Why should we?" Surprisingly it was Neer who questioned this.

"What?" The researchers were shocked by his sudden change of nature.

"No one in this big world came out to help us when we needed it the most. Then why should we try and save it?" Neer asked, looking at everyone with the mix of anger and sadness.

"Let's not waste our energy on them. They wouldn't understand," Ahana pulled Neer back with a  light tug to get on the bike.

Starting the bike, Ahana turned towards the group for the last time. "Don't inform anyone about what happened today. If we can save you, then we also have the power to destroy you completely."

Threatening them, the twins rode away. Sameera too left, not finding it necessary to say anything as a goodbye.

Avan was sad to see the people like him go away, but the knowledgeable trees whispered that he would meet them again and that too soon.
