14- Deceived

Elements sat in the corridor of the hospital, looking at the news as they waited for their turn.

"This isn't the first incident where the superheroes have come forward to help. Our reporters are at different places interviewing the people who had the chance to meet the superheroes. After this break, we will meet those lucky people. So don't go anywhere, and keep watching our channel."

Sameera looked at the elements with a frown, "What are they talking about? Who are these people?"

"Let's wait and watch," Gyaan sighed.

"Let's speak with this lovely couple with a cute baby girl. Yes, please tell us about your experience with the five superheroes."

"Well, we didn't meet all of them. We met two people. They were probably siblings," the man said, while holding his two year old daughter.

"Siblings? Wow! I didn't know that our superheroes were related. Please tell us about the incident," the reporter requested.

"It was two years ago. Remember the drastic times when disasters had hit the world."

"Yeah it was a terrible time for everybody," the reporter agreed.

"We live away from main roads and usually rely on the waterfalls in case water gets cut off. However, at that time water was cut off for many days due to the disaster hitting the pipeline. And the waterfalls had also dried.

"I was out trying to find water for my pregnant wife. After searching for so many hours, I was only able to find a single bottle of water. While coming back I found an unconscious guy. Bringing him to the village, I gave him water, I bought for my wife."

His wife continued, "Within two minutes, the waterfall had come to life. We didn't realize it back then, but seeing them now on time, I am sure that it was the siblings who provided us with the massive waterfall in return for a single bottle of water."

"Did this happen?" Gyaan asked the twins, curious to find out whether it was true or a made up story.

"It's true," Ahana confirmed, "It happened on the same day we met the researchers and you all. A few hours before that to be precise," she said, looking at the curious gazes of Sameera and Avan.

"Oh!" The other elements muttered, remembering the day they all met. The day Fire, Water, Air and Earth had joined to save people stuck inside the research building, where a massive current-filled water force flowing downwards ready to electrocute anyone, while the upper side of the building was on fire.

"Hey, look, the villagers," Gyaan pointed out, as the channel showed another reporter who had a whole village standing behind him.

"One by one. Please tell us about your experience one by one," the reporter requested when everyone started talking at once because of excitement.

"The one who healed the police officers, he was the one who had let us know to pack our essentials and be ready. It was only because of him that we didn't lose our money and jewellry when we had to run from our village because of the windstorm. He can see the future."

Ahana snorted, "They are over-complimenting Gyaan. He isn't that great."

"You didn't have such opinions when the couple were praising you. We all know the waterfall was Neer's doing yet you received the compliments along with him," Gyaan counter-backed.

"Enough, let us hear what they are saying," Sameera scolded and shushed them.

"They even saved our animals whom we had left behind while trying to save our lives."

"That was me," Avan said with a giddy smile.

"Of course, the ever loving friend of trees and animals," Ahana commented, pulling his chubby cheeks.

"The older lady who paused the bullet, she was the one who guided us outside. It was like she knew which direction the windstorm would move."

Sameera smiled. Although their powers were exposed, it felt good to hear them praising the elements.

"I have personally mended their bike. Whoa! I can't believe I had the blessing of helping the superheroes," the mechanic said baffled by his own situation.

"Look at him. We made his life, didn't we?" Neer joked, looking at Ahana.

"Tell me about it," she chuckled, shaking her head.

"And the fire. Oh yes, we were so shocked when that happened. Electricity was gone, and the fire wasn't able to sustain the windstorm, yet when they brought the logs, the fire didn't die until we reached safely outside," one woman said.

"Ah yes!" another woman exclaimed, "they told us it was technology and we blindly believed them. We didn't even know that superheroes were among us. We just thought that the city people were more advanced than us villagers."

"But there were many more people with them. At least 7-8 people along with their kids," a man informed.

"There are more people with powers," the reporter repeated for the audience in a loud voice. "Our channel promises to be the first one to find them. We shall and we will find the hidden superheroes."

"Those 7-8 people with kids weren't superheroes, you idiot," Ahana muttered to the screen with a huff.

"Yeah, they were the researchers. The only humans who knew about our truth," Sameera said with a sigh.

"Won't they get into the problem because of this?" Neer questioned.

"No they won't. Because they won't contact us until everything dies down. And will pretend they don't know us if we come across by chance," Gyaan answered, glancing at Avan with a side eye.

"That was the reason Mumma did what she did in school, right? She will come for me when everyone forgets about this news, right?" Avan asked with glistened eyes.

"Hopefully kiddo, hopefully. Let's pray that this is what has happened," Ahana said, ruffling his hair in a comforting manner.

"Let's seize contact from our side too," Gyaan suggested. "We shouldn't put them in trouble."

The elements agreed with the suggestion.

"Let me just send one last message. We shouldn't abandon them without a notice," Neer said, as he texted Maanvi, thanking her for her idea and letting her know that he wouldn't be in contact for the time being.

"I don't think the researchers would be foolish to contact us after this," Ahana said while looking at the news that was still playing, "but the kids might contact us out of worry. I will just let them know that we are okay, but won't be able to keep in touch," Ahana said and texted Rewa, the daughter of the team leader of the research team, and asked her to inform the other kids of researchers.

"Don't seize contact with Ravi for now," Gyaan said. They needed his help to reach their home safely.

"But what if he falls in danger because of us?" Sameera asked with concern.

"He is safe in his home," Gyaan replied.

"And do you really think any reporter would have the guts to trouble him. That man is scary. You wouldn't know because he becomes a teddy bear in front of you," Neer said with a laugh.

Sameera instantly remembered the first time she met Ravi. She was already in tears, because of his temper. She couldn't believe how far they had come from that time.

"What was I saying....," Ahana was cut-off when a ward boy coughed to gain their attention.

"Yes?" Gyaan asked politely.

"I have brought some refreshments for you all."

"Why?...I mean what was the need?..." Neer asked uncomfortably, looking at others who looked uncomfortable as well.

"You saved so many kids today. And here we are making you wait for the treatment. Unfortunately, there are lot of emergency patients and we aren't able to take you in fast even if we want to.

"As an apology and as a gratitude for saving people, please take this," he insisted.

"But—"

"Please, it would make us feel less guilty."

The elements glanced at each other awkwardly, not knowing what to think of the special treatment.

"Let's just take it. It looks yummy and I am thirsty too," Avan whispered.

"Yeah, please listen to the kid," the ward boy piped up.

They glanced at each other once more, before taking the glasses filled with fresh juice.

"Thank you," they muttered, before gulping down the juice in an instant.

"Damn! I was parched," Sameera muttered, wiping her mouth.

"Maybe we didn't realize it because of adrenali....," Neer stopped in between as a sharp, stabbing pain hit him in the head.

"Neer...what's wrong!" Ahana stood up in hurry, seeing him clutch his head tightly. But before she could take a step towards him, her feet faltered.

One by one they all caught their heads. Sweat started gathering, as they breathed heavily. Something was terribly wrong. Their eyes fell on the empty juice glasses. Fury ran through their veins. They were deceived. But before they could even think of doing anything, their eyes saw darkness.
