It was the first time Kayla felt comfortable at the school when she first found out that stupid book in the Stefan Salvatore's memorial.

'Kai Parker: The Demon of the Gemini'

Even the name was stupid. The content, however was not stupid. It held everything she needed to know about her sperm donor. It held everything she needed to know to blame the absent man for everything bad happening to her.

Kayla knew she couldn't take the book out of the mausoleum so she made sure to go there every night after Penelope was long asleep to keep reading the book.

It was when one night, Kayla found herself not alone.

There was another girl in there, reading one of Stefan's diaries.

"You shouldn't be out here" Kayla spoke after a moment.

The girl gasped in surprise, whirling around to face who startled her, her eyes slightly wide that relaxed it was another student who busted her breaking rules instead of the headmaster or headmistress.

"Neither should you" Hope Marshall pointed out. She was supposed to know she wasn't alone, she was a freaking tribid, right? Someone powerful, right?

"I have never followed rules before" Kayla shrugged by hiding a slight wince as the unwanted memories of her step father punishing her after breaking the rules flashed inside her head. That never stopped her from rebelling against him, however. "Rules are meant to be broken"

Hope's lips twitched slightly. That reminded her a little bit of her uncle Kol. Her heart ached slightly because of that. Because of her, her family couldn't be together again.

"Maybe, maybe not" Hope gave a slight shrug. "What brings you here, breaking the rules then?"

"Not a dead man's diary like you, it seems" Kayla answered, raising her eyebrows as her eyes went to the opened diary Hope was reading.

Hope pursed her lips, not wanting to reveal the reason why she was reading Stefan's diary.

It was her way to be close to her father after not being able to see him nor talk to him in the last seven years. It was her way of not doing something stupid to get his attention.

"He led an interesting life" Hope said instead. Kayla nodded, unconvinced. Hope noticed a book behind Kayla, frowning slightly, "Is that a book you were reading?"

Hope pointed to the book peeking out from under the couch in the room.

Kayla followed her gaze to where she had hidden Kai's book and made a face, "Yeah"

Hope walked closer, sitting in the couch, bending over to pick up the book, reading silently the name. "I've read it once"

Casually, Kayla sat in front of Hope, "And what do you think about it? I'm about half way in"

"That once someone starts reading it, they never finish because of all the things this man did" Hope said quietly. Yes, Kai was a bad man and in some ways, to other people he was worse than her own father. It made Hope a little sympathetic for anyone who was related to this man. No one would ever see him as a hero. At least, Hope and her family knew Klaus was a hero to them.

"Oh" Kayla said just as quiet. I mean, what else could she say?'Thank you for your opinion on my bio dad's life?'

Hope frowned slightly, "You've read more than I expected. I mean, I believe I'm one of the only ones who has read all of it. Why the interest?"

Kayla shrugged, suddenly not being able to look at Hope into her eyes, "Nothing special. Just wanted to know what kind of man he was"

Hope knew somehow this girl was lying to her. "Really? If I were you, I'd have dropped the book the moment I read he killed his entire family and took out his own twin sister's spleen"

Kayla winced slightly. Yeah, she had almost done that but she wanted to know him. Know the man responsible of certain darkness in her. Why she could do what she could and feel that void, unable to fill it no matter how much magic she took.

"Call it morbid curiosity" Kayla replied. "I want to know"

Somehow, the insistence this girl had to know about this man was similar as her own to know every bad deed Klaus had ever done, no matter how evil it was.

Hope blinked in realization, "You knew him"

Kayla scoffed, shaking her head, opening her mouth to say something when they heard the door to the mausoleum being opened.

Both girls' eyes widened.

Not risking being caught, they both passed a hand through the length of their faces, turning themselves invisible "Invisique"

Maybe it was the light but Hope could have sworn she saw Kayla's hand glow before she cast the invisibility spell on herself.

The librarian, Mr. Williams was the one who walked in, a frown in his face as he could have sworn there were voices inside. It took him a moment to realize the room was empty before he left.

Both girls released the breath they didn't know they were holding, turning back visible.

"That was close" Kayla remarked in a whisper.

Hope could only stare at her, "You're like the twins, aren't you?"

Kayla turned to Hope, her eyes widening momentarily before she relaxed, "The headmaster's daughters?"

"Don't act stupid" Hope scolded slightly, "I saw you. And no one said there was another siphoner among us. Ms Forbes and Dr. Saltzman said you were a witch"

Hope remembered when the girl in front of her arrived at the school, sure she couldn't remember her name right now but she knew she had been presented as a witch. Everyone knew what each other was in the school, just in case something happened, they knew what to do to control them.

It was weird they hid this girl's true nature, though. Why would they do that?

Unless... Hope looked down at the Kai Parker's book in realization, "You're part of his family" Kayla pursed her lips, staying silent. "He's your dad, isn't he?"

It made sense didn't it? Why she wanted to know everything about him, just like Hope was reading Stefan's diary where everyone saw Klaus as the bad guy. They wanted to know, regardless of the men they were.

That was something Hope understood and why she found herself confiding in the girl in front of her without realizing she was doing so, "I know the feeling. My dad is also a bad guy, well at least to everyone in here, not like they know he's my dad you know?"

Kayla frowned slightly, reaching out her hand toward the diary Hope was reading making a grabbing motion, pulling her hand to herself. The diary flew through the air straight into Kayla's hands.

Hope blinked and stood unmoving as Kayla read the entrance in Stefan's diary about her dad.

"Klaus Mikaelson" Kayla said slowly, looking up at Hope. "He's your dad" Hope nodded slightly, "Well, talk about screwed up childhoods" Kayla pointed out with a bitter chuckle.

"Hey, my dad wasn't-" Hope began with a frown only to stop when she noticed Kayla wasn't being serious. "Well, it was a screwed up one but not because of him" because of me.

"Well, mine was because my mom wasn't able to keep her legs closed while being married with my asshole, abusive step dad" Kayla replied bluntly.

Hope winced. She didn't know who was Kayla's mom or how she was like but she'd never speak of her own mom like that. She loved her just as much she knew Hayley loved her.

"Your step dad hit you?" Hope asked in shock. She didn't know what her family would have done if someone were to lay a hand on her... Well, that was a lie. She did know. Their hearts would have been out of their bodies before they were able to apologize. "And your mom let it happen?"

"She wasn't the greatest mom" Kayla shrugged, "And not necessarily hitting. That was his last resource if I kept uh, siphoning things to defend myself"

How was she able to sound so nonchalant about this? Hope was feeling awful by knowing this already and she didn't go through it.

"I'm really sorry" Hope said softly.

"Why?" Kayla asked curiously, "It's not your fault and besides, they're already dead"

Hope shook her head with a small sigh, "I still can't believe your family was so mean to you"

Hope sat down.

Kayla followed her lead, crossing her legs and leaning back against the couch, "Meh, I do. Anyway, your dad's alive isn't he? Why reading about him in here when you can get the stories straight from the source?"

The sympathetic feeling Hope got was replaced by bitterness. "Because he doesn't answer my calls nor he seems to want to see me"

Kayla tilted her head in confusion. Hope made sure to keep the details light when she explained the situation she and her family were facing.

"That sucks" Kayla said after a moment. Both girls still not realizing they had been talking almost all night.

"See?" Hope threw her hands up, huffing.

"Maybe all you have to do is give him a reason to come to see you" Kayla said slowly, thoughtfully. Hope tilted her head curiously, "You said he has done everything to make sure you're safe, right? That includes him and his siblings to get a part of this Hollow thingy inside of them to keep you save but far away from each other, right?"

"I said that, yes" Hope said impatiently, "What does that have anything to do with -"

"Do something drastic to get his attention back to you" Kayla interrupted. Hope closed her mouth as she began to consider this. "Something that jeopardizes all that safety he worked on to keep you safe. Of course, I'm not asking you to commit suicide or an attempt of it or something. Just something that makes him think you'll be in danger. He'll want to return to make sure you're safe and break that silence between you two"

Hope began to plot what could make Klaus Mikaelson come here.

"Or, I can do both..." Hope began, "Do something to make sure he gets here but if that doesn't work, I have to find a way to go where he is"

"Do you have money to travel wherever he's hiding?" Kayla asked, raising an eyebrow.

Hope didn't but Kayla had given her an idea and it wouldn't go away so easily. She had two plans. If A didn't work, B definitely would.

"I have an idea of getting that money" Hope said, excitement bubbling inside of her as she smiled brightly at the dark haired girl. "You have no idea how much this means to me, that you helped me"

And that you don't seem to fear my dad, Hope added mentally. Of course, it went both ways, Hope didn't fear Kai either though she knew they both should fear each other's fathers.

Maybe they weren't normal but since when normal was better?

Kayla broke into a small smile, the first in all night, "Evil schemes is something I'm good at" she joked, "Well, at least that's what my brother said once"

Hope sighed, "Your brother sounds like an asshole" Kayla beamed at that, "Oh, by the way... We don't know each other's names and we almost know everything about each other. I'm Hope. Hope Marshall because no one knows about my dad"

Hope held her hand to Kayla.

Cautiously, Kayla grabbed Hope's hand, taking a deep to keep her gates closed as Penelope taught her to do, forcing back the temptation of taking Hope's magic inside her so she wouldn't hurt her. After today, she wouldn't want to hurt a... potential friend.

"Kayla Rivers" Kayla replied tersely, dropping Hope's hand quickly confusing the tribid, "No one knows Kai's my dad so that's why Rivers... And sorry for that. I'm still working on not siphoning living things when I touch them and hurt them"

"Living things?" Hope repeated in concerned amusement, "Didn't know I was a 'thing'."

Kayla rolled her eyes, huffing "Whatever. You know what I mean"

Hope and Kayla shared a small smile.

Maybe the secret of their fathers was out, something neither wanted but at least it was to someone who understood.

Maybe it wasn't that bad after all, maybe they just needed a friend, someone to trust in what they were going through. Maybe they could actually become friends.
