Chapter 27: Closer
I was going through my closet to find a suitable outfit for the supposed date I had with Vince in less than an hour. I had sixty minutes to get ready, convince my parents who were out for an event and finish reading a bit for the Chemistry test tomorrow.
I was pulling out possible candidates whilst reciting the portions, glancing at my notes every now and then.
"Morality is number of moles of so-" I stopped mid definition as I found what was the jumpsuit that fit the situation perfectly.
It was a broad strap black jumpsuit that reached mid thigh and had a golden zipper at the front matching the zips on the pockets.
I paired it up with my white converse and a golden charm bracelet. Since I knew I would probably be riding a bike, I put my hair in a low pony tail.
My green eyes were enhanced by a simple winged eyeliner and my lips were covered with clear gloss.
I grabbed my phone and house keys placing them in a black leather side bag. I dialed my mother's number and placed it beside my Chemistry book on speaker going through the notes one last time. The black cardigan I was planning to wear was in a heap on the other side.
"Hey, Mel."
"Hi, mom, I'm actually going out for a bit. I'll be back by eleven." I said in one breath, taking a quick look at the clock that read quarter to seven.
"Okay, honey. Be careful." She said glibly, making me frown immediately.
"I'll be out with Vince." I added, feeling like I had cheated her some how.
"Yeah, he told us. Have fun!" The line went dead at that. He told them?
This is bullshit. Vince needed to start talking and soon.
Did I want to risk a date with him just because I felt insecure? I couldn't dwell on the matter any longer than a few seconds because the bell rang.
"Hi." Vince was dressed in his signature black long sleeved V-neck and denim.
"You look beautiful." It wasn't the first time he had said it yet it had me blushing. He followed his words with a small kiss on my cheek, making sure the blush darkened.
"Where are we going?" I asked, taking the helmet he was holding out for me.
"I would be the worst boyfriend if I told you." He chuckled, grabbed my hands and wrapped in around his torso.
"Hold tight." He whispered before he took off.
The thrill of riding a bike was not new to me, I would often beg my father to teach me how to. Though, he never did buy me what he thought was a killing machine, he taught me how to ride it. So, more than a couple of times I had driven around the house on the bike the Valet would arrive in. He was a sweet man, not over thirty who was more than delighted to lend me his bike.
I took in the surroundings as Vince zoomed past cars and trees, the breeze wrecking havoc in my hair.
I would loosen my arms around him, getting lost in the air and the next minute he hit the brakes forcing me to hold tight again.
"I heard you have become best of friends with my parents." I shouted over the buzzing.
"Yeah, they are lovely people." He replied, "Jealous?" I could hear the smirk on his voice.
"Get over yourself." I retorted, punching his back softly. Though I could tell the muscles beneath the leather jacket he pulled on hardly felt it.
I recognized the street he took, which lead to the beach.
"A beach date, aren't you a bit cliché." I laughed out but soon stopped upon realizing that he had taken a right that lead to the Rocky part of the beach instead of the golden sand one.
"I'll show you cliché." We came to a stop before a newly painted light house. The tower stretching till what looked like it could be the third floor on a cliff.
I got off the bike and followed closely behind Vince who was taking confident steps to the entry door.
"Vince there is a lock on it." I whispered keeping a look out for a life guard or someone.
"Yeah, and I have the keys." He dangled a set of keys before my eyes.
"How illegal is this?" Unlike Vince my voice was still in a murmur.
"Relax, Jinx. I know the guy who mans this place. You can stop whispering." The door opened with a loud creak. Vince tugged at my arm and we climbed the stairs hand in hand.
I gasped as I took in the view at the top.
The sky was littered with stars that twinkled till they met with the sea but that wasn't all.
Ahead of the huge rotating light of the light house was a balcony, looking over the sea. The sides of the rails were wrapped in what looked like battery operated lights framing the breathtaking view of the water. Vince came up from behind me and placed a lantern at the corner. Lighting up the small place.
"It's beautiful." No words were enough to point out the beauty my eyes could see.
"You've ruined me for places like these." I looked up to see his bore into mine, the boy had the talent to make me blush. Something no one else could do.
I reached over and pulled him into a slow kiss, letting my lips do the talking. His hands rested on my waist and his body bent over to reach me.
I snaked my arms around his neck, burying my hands in his soft black hair.
"We have a date to finish, Jinx. You're making me want to skip the steps." Vince mumbled out, his lips barely parted from mine.
"Skipping steps sounds lovely." He groaned at my words, placing another kiss on my lips. But much to my disappointment, he pulled away.
"I have gummy bears for dessert." That won me over.
We both sat down on the blanket Vince magically brought along with a basket of food. The door to the balcony lay open bringing in the sea breeze and the sound of waves splashing against the rocks.
We engaged in our usual talking, Vince was taking in ever bit of information I was throwing at him. Even when I narrated my first fall off a bicycle.
"What do you want to do after graduation?" Vince asked out of the blue, his shoulder brushing against mine.
"Get a marketing degree and join the company, I guess."
"I thought you loved maths."
"I do, but I have looked forward to doing what dad has been since I was a little girl." I could feel him looking at me.
"That's great, whatever makes you happy." You do.
"And you, Mr Bad Boy?" His eyes were twinkling under the moon light, making my heart go overboard.
"I wanted a maths major." He grinned at me, a gesture my poor beating heart was not ready for.
"Yeah? Started applying to colleges?" He only nodded at my words, taking my hand in his.
We both sat in silence for a while enjoying each other's presence, Vince brought out the sandwichs which tasted like melting heaven in my mouth.
We discussed things I didn't know could make me laugh as much as they did but after an hour or two talking the atmosphere changed.
"I had cancer." I blurted out, a newly opened packet of gummy bears lay between us. I felt Vince's breathing hitch beside me, but I didn't turn to look at him. I wiped the drops of prespreation on the sides of the coke can.
"I was diagnosed when I was fourteen, because of which we shifted immediately to New York where we stayed for a year and a half." My eyes started watering as I remembered the time I thought I wouldn't see the next day.
"My life changed, I became a girl who didn't step out of the house. I-" I choked on my words. Vince brought me closer, pulling my legs over his as I settled on his lap with my head resting on his shoulder.
He hadn't said anything, and I was thankful, the only people I spoke to about this was Jake.
"My hair, they shaved it off. I resembled a corpse, the days I spent in therapy." Vince's hands tightened around mine as he started rocking me slowly.
"Jinx, you don't need visual beauty, you have an enchanting soul. Such a pure heart, so much love and affection for even the ones who don't even deserve it." I turned on his lap, straddling him as I hugged him closer. I knew what the twisting in my stomach and the warmth in my body meant. I was in love.
"Not always, you know that. Before I left I was a brat, though my parents kept a close look on me, my attitude in school at the age of fourteen was far different." He knew this, he was there.
"Those years changed my life, Vince. I saw what I was taking for granted and I wanted to be better; for myself. When I came back, things happened. Everyone assumed I was modeling for a company back in New York and the rumors spread like wild fire, before I knew it I was back to where I started. Whatever they said mattered, whatever they did mattered. You make me not want to care, you make me better." I didn't know how much of what I said he heard because my head was his lying against his shoulder.
But I knew he was listening because every time I fumbled or stuttered he held me tighter, his fingers were drawing small circles on my waist, calming me down. I knew he understood me and I knew how much what I said affected him.
"You make me better too, Jinx." He kissed my hair and before I knew it, I said it.
"I love you."
