.:Two:.

Soft snores carried up from the bloody bundle nestled in Running Bear's arms. The screaming from Elizabeth having ceased leaving the moaning of sorrow to be carried on the wind, to be scattered through the barren trees. Staring down at the rosy cheeked infant, the malice faded from Running Bear's eyes.

Swiping his thumb across the baby's well rounded cheek, he silently cooed. The infant turned its head following his hand, opening its mouth trying to suckle Running Bear's thumb. Having pulled his hand away from the searching mouth of the infant only resulted in the wailing cry of hunger. Standing up from kneeling on the cool ground, Running Bear tightened the bundling cloth around the infant. Turning to the house, he stared up at the second story window, looking at the beautiful woman that had carried his child.

He walked slowly to the porch to enter the house, cooing gently to the child, trying to sooth the howling screams of hunger from the newborn. Ascending the steps of the staircase, he stared at the infant once more, studying her features. The only thing he could see that she got from her mother was the dark strawberry blonde hair, that was matted with dried fluids and blood. Everything else that Running Bear seen in the child reminded him of his mother, the caramel skin with the red undertones, high cheek bones that accentuated her entire little face. He saw his mother in a smaller form as he looked at his infant daughter, so new to the world with so much hate.

Standing in the doorway of the bedroom, Running Bear looked to the woman he thought he could have by his side during these troubling times. Elizabeth was leaning against several pillows, resting her post-birth body, drained of all her energy. Opening her eyes partially, she watched the father of her child studying her. Her eyes zeroed in on the bloody bundle of cloth, her reaction was instantaneous. Moving quickly she sat up, wincing briefly she reached out for the infant, relief flooding her body.

A gentle smile spread across the hardened warrior's face as he walked to the mother of his child, slipping the infant silently into her awaiting arms. Her face lit up with the love of a mother, glowing from within that made Running Bear's heart swell with pride. For one second he felt like everything in the world was at peace, but the moment was short lived, when the infant started crying out once again hunger. The infant girl wailed her plait to anyone's ears it reached.

As Running Bear stared down at his small but complete family, he knew their was a reason the ancestors allowed him to bring a female child into the world where warriors were needed. He was not someone to deny what ever they had in store for her. Turning his gaze to he window he stared at the setting sun, thinking of all the hardships she would have to over come when the time came.
