Chapter 2 Mady

I was really starting to not like my job. The girls were great but my boss was a little to handsy for my liking. It wasn't like he grabbed my butt or anything it was more of the passing touches and the way his eyes hazed over when he looked at me that made me feel uncomfortable. Plus I was really missing my small hometown. Toronto is not small by no means. I like when I can walk down the street and say good evening or just smile at the person passing you on the sidewalk and they would return the gesture. In the city it wasn't that easy.

I haven't even been at work for 30 minutes yet and I was counting down till I was on vacation. I decided not to go anywhere besides back home to visit my best friend and her twin daughters. I missed them the most. They were my family. I had moved up here 2 years ago and even or daily phone calls had turned into weekly ones and sometimes just a few texts. I hated it but I knew she was busy and everyday life just got away from us sometimes.

My boss was in one of his unusual chipper moods. I wasn't sure why. I knew he had a meeting today with a top notch security firm and for some reason he was extremely confident. I knew he wasn't happy that the monthly charges went up but honestly what hasn't gone up lately. So this firm had sent someone to talk to him about his concerns. I was glad I wasn't going to be in that meeting. Gerald, I mean Mr. Jackson, was not a man to mess with. He enjoyed making businessmen squirm. That was one of his talents I guess, to beat down his competition and those he could just bully. His only goal was to get what he wanted for practically next to nothing.

"Mady?" Mr. Jackson opened his door and called, "When the gentleman gets here from the security company make him have a seat and let me know but I do not want to see him for at least 15 minutes."

"Yes, Sir," I acknowledged him. When he shut the door I sighed. Not only did I have to lie to the person I also had to listen to my boss gloat when this was done. He was on a high and making this person wait was his way of letting the person know that he was in complete control of this meeting and the gentlemen would bend to his will.

I double checked the appointment book and the meeting was set for 9am. I had a least 15 minutes to get some of my work done before I ended up losing half of a day's work. First I was going to have to talk to the guy and tell him that Mr. Jackson was running late and then my boss would call me at least twice during that 15 minutes and I would end up playing the role of pretending I was on the phone with another security company. Then there would be serving of the coffee. An hour later the meeting would be done and I would have to hear the play by play on how he scammed yet another business man to give him what he wanted and the guy left defeated and not knowing what had just happened to him.

I understood when you are in a business you have to do what you can to save and benefit the company but I did not agree of watching people getting screwed over. Maybe it was time for me to look for another job. If this one did not pay so well and had amazing benefits I would have been gone a long time ago.

The office I worked in was basically a large long room with multiple offices off it. All of us, office administrators, had our own desks in front of whoever we worked for. Mr. Jackson being one of the top men had his office at the end and in the corner. Going over the weekly agenda and moving appointments around due to Mr. Jackson more important meetings: squash and a massage. I wasn't paying too much attention to what was going on around me. It wasn't till the usual chatter of the other ladies started to quiet before I looked up.

There in front of me was this extremely well dressed gorgeous man. His hair was blonde and slicked back, his brown eyes where the colour of caramel. His presences overpowered the room never mind the size of him. As I sat there I could tell he was over six feet tall and very well built under that single breasted dark gray suit, black dress shirt with a grey and fine white diagonal pinstripe. I was almost positive I sat there with my mouth open and speechless.

He stared down at me and seemed to be confused for a few minutes. Well it seemed like a few minutes but probably was only seconds. I was appalled with my lack of professionalism. Before I could snap out of it he spoke.

"Hello, I have an appointment with Mr. Jackson for 9am. My name is Gladstone, Nate Gladstone." His voice was like butter. It could have melted in my mouth. It sure was melting other parts of my body.

I had to clear my throat twice before I could speak. "Um, yes. He is...he is on a call right at the moment. Would you like to have a seat?" Ok that wasn't too bad.

He nodded but stayed where he was and still stared at me. I didn't know what to do. I so badly wanted to take my mirror out of my desk to see if I had something on my face or in my hair. He shook his head then turned and went to the seating area that was not even 10 feet away. I really tried not to watch him walk away but my eyes were glued to his every movement. He didn't so much as walk to the arranged seating but glide.

Sitting down his eyes went right to mine and of course I was still staring. "Would you like some coffee?" I blurted out, jumped up knocking all the papers I had neatly at the corner of my desk to the floor. Embarrassed was not even the word to describe what I felt at that moment.

Kneeling down I started to pick up the mess of papers that scattered everywhere. "Here you go," The voice smooth as silk spoke not even a foot from my ear. This god like creature was beside me and held out a few of the papers.

When I met his eyes my body seemed to melt into a ball of mush. "Um, thank you," I whispered.

Taking my hand he helped me up and back into my seat. "Have dinner with me tonight," It wasn't a question.

Before I could even think of what to say my mouth answered for me. "Yes."

The smile that lit his face would have had my knees go weak and give out if I wasn't already sitting down. "Great! I will pick you up after work Madeline." I must have looked shocked because he said, "Your name is on the nameplate on your desk."

"Mady! Why are you not answering the damn phone?" Mr. Jackson stormed out of his office. I guess that was the annoying buzz I had heard over the past few minutes after Nate arrived.

"Mr. Jackson? That was my fault. She was helping me. I'm Nate Gladstone. It is nice to meet you," Nate said as smooth as butter and shook my bosses hand.

Oh I think my boss just might lose his first battle. I already knew Nate Gladstone was not a force to be reckoned with.
