Chapter 5- Mission to the Land of Waves Part 1

I stood on a tree above Kakashi looking over at the "demon" cat known as Tora. Raiden was beside me looking at the butterfly that was currently settled on my hair. When it got there, I have no idea. I didn't have a headset because I "forgot" to get one. Let's be honest I did not get one because I can hear the team clearly. The good side to having the Kyuubi's chakra in me is that I have enhanced hearing and smell. I watched as the team got into place to catch Tora, "Sasuke, I'm at point B."

"Sakura, I'm at point C."

There was a silence for a bit, "Naruto, I'm at point A. Believe it!" I heard Naruto say. I looked around and spotted him easily. Seriously I think I should get Naruto a new wardrobe, but yet again, he does like his orange jumpsuit and I don't mind it.

I heard Kakashi sigh, "You're slow Naruto. Okay squad seven," I saw Tora jump away, "Target has moved, follow it." I lost sight of them but could hear them faintly.

"What's your distance from the target?" Kakashi asked.

"Five meters. I'm ready just give the signal." I heard Naruto say. I moved closer to their location to watch who got scratched by Tora. They jumped into action and Naruto caught Tora, "I got him! I got him!" Naruto yelled and Tora started to scratch Naruto's face. I jumped down and grabbed Tora and he instantly calmed down.

"Affirmative we got a positive ID." Sasuke said.

"Can't we get a better mission than this! I hate cats!" Naruto yelled.

I bonked Naruto on the head, "Naruto, MY EARS!" I yelled.

We went back to the academy where we went to hand in the mission, also known as Tora. Iruka and Sarutobi-sensei were there handing out the missions. Madam Shijimi tore Tora out my arms and started to squish him. Raiden took that opportunity to jump from Naruto's arms and into my arms. He made himself comfortable and I made my way over to Sarutobi-sensei.

"Oh, my poor little Tora. Mommy was so worried about her naughty little fuzzy kitten. Yes." Madam Shijimi said as she continued to squash the cat.

Naruto started laughing and I stood behind Sarutobi-sensei looking at the missions laid out for the genin, "Stupid cat. That kitty deserves to be squashed." Naruto said.

"Now then, for squad seven's next mission we have several available tasks. Among them babysitting the chief councilor's three year old, helping his wife to do the shopping, digging up potatoes in the-" Sarutobi-sensei was cut off by Naruto.

"Noo!" Naruto crossed his arms in an x shape, "I want to go on a real mission. Something challenging and exciting, not this little kid stuff! Come on old man!" Naruto said. You know he's actually right, not even my team got to do these kinds of missions when we younger. Just shows how lazy people get over the years.

Iruka stood up yelling at Naruto, "How dare you! You're just a brand new genin with no experience! Like everyone else you start with simple missions to develop your skills and prove yourself!"

Naruto yelled back, "Are you serious?! Babysitting is not a mission, it's a stupid-" Kakashi hit Naruto on the head and Naruto face-planted on the floor.

"Will you put a lid on it?" Kakashi questioned.

Sensei started talking, "Naruto, it seems you do not understand the tasks you have been given. Listen many different kinds of request come into our village every day. From babysitting to assassinations..." and like that I blocked him out. Should I let Naruto eat ramen today again or should I make food? Yet again I need to go and buy more food. I think Naruto can have ramen today, not like he will complain. Hey maybe I can go eat Dango! Hmmm... Dango, "Silence!" Sensei yelled. I almost dropped Raiden when he yelled.

"Oh, sorry." Kakashi said. Naruto was still sitting on the floor.

"Ahh! You always lecture me like you're my grandfather or something! But I'm not the little brat who used to pull pranks all the time! I'm a ninja now and I want a ninja mission!" Naruto yelled and he turned around pouting like a little kid.

"I'm going to hear about this later." Kakashi said rubbing his head.

"Sarutobi-sensei, if I may, I believe they're ready for a C-ranked mission." I added my input.

Sensei started to chuckle, "Naruto, wants us to know that he's not a brat. He's a former brat and he wants a mission. So be it. Since you are so determined, I'm going to give you a C-ranked mission. You'll be bodyguards on a journey." Sensei said. I looked at the C-ranked scroll and saw we had to escort someone named Tazuna.

"Really? Yes!" Naruto cheered, "Who? Who? Are we guarding, a princess? A Feudal Lord?" Naruto asked.

"Don't be so impatient. I'll bring him in now. Send in our visitor." Sensei said. I looked towards the door and I smelled sake, lots of sake. Hey it might be Tsunade instead!

Sadly it was not Tsunade, it was indeed an old man, "What the? A bunch of little snot nosed kids. And you the little one with the idiotic look on his face, you really expect me to believe you're a ninja?" the man asked. He must be Tazuna, the one who requested the mission.

Naruto laughed, "Who's the little one with the idiotic look on his-" He cut off when he saw Tazuna was referring to him. I sighed and put Raiden on the table by Iruka. Naruto started to go toward the client and I flashed by him grabbing his collar, "I'll demolish you, let me get my hands on him."

"*sigh* Troublesome, you can't demolish the client Naruto. It doesn't work that way" I said keeping a tight hold on him.

"I am Tazuna a master bridge builder and I must return to my country. I'm building a bridge there that will change our world and I expect you to get me there safely even if it means giving up your life." Tazuna said. I froze and thought about why he would ask us to give up our lives in a simple C-ranked mission. Kakashi dismissed the team and he left first. Naruto ran home and everyone else left after him.

Sensei was behind me and grabbed my shoulder, "Minako, is something the matter?" He asked.

I started to also feel foreign chakra outside the village gates, "Yes, one would be why he said we had to get him back to his home land safely even if it costs our lives and two there is a foreign chakra outside the village." I informed him.

"This is why you will go with them, you will inform me if the mission changes rank and anything that happens along the way. You will also need your mask outside the village, we do not need anyone to find out about you having a brother." Sensei said. I nodded and teleported home after grabbing Raiden. I packed five changes of clothes including my nightwear, I packed Raiden's toys and food, finally I packed nonperishable food and extra water for Naruto and I, sealing it all in two different scrolls. I grabbed my mask and attached it to my shirt pulling it over half my face.

Naruto came into my room, "Sis, why are you wearing your mask?" He asked.

I turned and smiled, "To protect you from my enemies, Naruto." I started and I ruffled his hair, "Let's head to the gates, also while outside the village, and try to be careful. I don't want anything to happen to you." I gave him a closed eyed smile. He smiled back at me and nodded.

We were the last one's at the gates because I had to get my dango. Naruto was excited about leaving the village for the first time, "Yeah! Alright!"

"What are you getting so excited about Naruto?" Sakura questioned.

"This is the first time I've ever left the village. I'm a traveler now, believe it!" Naruto yelled.

"Hey. Am I supposed to trust my life to this runt, he's a joke." Tazuna said.

I glared and I was about to beat some sense into him but Kakashi pulled my pony tail as a warning, "He's with me and I'm a Jounin, Minako here is an also a Jounin. So you don't need to worry." Kakashi said.

"Tonketsu Jounin, Kakashi." I corrected him and once again he pulled my hair.

"Hey never insult a ninja. It's a mistake and I'm one of the greatest ninja ever! Someday I'm going to be Hokage and you'll look up to me. My name's Naruto Uzumaki, remember it!" Naruto yelled.

I felt the foreign chakra moving towards us, and I figured someone here was the target, "Hokage are powerful and wise. You are puny and brainless. The day you become Hokage I'll sprout wings and fly." Tazuna said.

"Argh! Shut up! I'm willing to do anything to become Hokage! No matter what it takes! And when I do everyone will have to admit that I'm the top ninja including you." Naruto yelled at Tazuna.

"You can become Hokage ten times over and to me you'll still be nobody. A loser." Tazuna said. Now Naruto was going to run at Tazuna so Kakashi let go of my hair and caught Naruto.

"Argh! I'm gonna make you pay for that right now!" Naruto said.

"We told you, you're supposed to protect the client not attack them." Kakashi told Naruto.

"Ne, you know Tazuna, you should not be rude to those that are to protect you because after the mission I cannot promise you will be alive if you continue to say such things." I said. Kakashi bonked me on the head and I face planted to the floor.

"How many times have I told you to not threaten the client Minako?" Kakashi asked.

"One thousand five hundred and twenty times." I said once I stood and dusted myself off.

"Then why do you still do it?" Kakashi asked.

"Because I know when to threaten the client and when to make a promise of pain. In this case, it's more of a promise of pain than anything else." I said and watched as Naruto and the team started to walk after Tazuna. I looked towards the trees to my right and narrowed my eyes. I heard Raiden start growling and I put a hand over my kunai pouch.

Let's see what they do later instead, "Raiden, let's go. The prey shall be kept alive a little while longer." I said as I walked away. Raiden stayed in step with me as I walked way behind the group. After a while I was next to Kakashi, well more like I was on his back playing with his gravity defying hair. It's a mystery to me still how his hair can stay up, just like Naruto's and dad's hair.

"Minako, are you done yet?" Kakashi asked.

I looked down at him and smiled, "Nope. Now shush I am not done trying to flatten it down." I said and I kept patting it down. At one point I got off his back and started walking next to Naruto who was trying to get me to tell him the identity of our parents. So I dropped a hint, 'You're related to a man who developed a technique and perfected one of the Hokage's techniques both of which I use.' After I said that Naruto had a thoughtful face, I'll be honest it is not the best hint I had.

"Say Mr. Tazuna?" Sakura asked.

"What is it?" Tazuna answered.

"Your country is the Land of Waves right?" She asked.

"Yeah what of it?" Tazuna asked.

"Kakashi-sensei, Minako-sensei, there are ninja in that country too, aren't there?" Sakura asked.

I shook my head, "No, there are no ninja in the Land of Waves, but in other countries there are hidden villages. Each with their own different customs and cultures where ninja reside. To the people of this continent the existence of shinobi villages means strength, military strength. In other words that's how they protect themselves and maintain the balance of power with neighboring countries. The ninja villages are not controlled by any government they're independent and have equal status. Now a small island like the Land of Waves has natural protection from the sea so there's no need for a ninja village. The five ancient lands that possess ninja villages are the Lands of Fire, Water, Lightning, Wind, and Earth. They each occupy vast territories, together they're known as the Five Great Shinobi Nations." Kakashi spoke.

"The Land of Fire the Village Hidden in the Leaves, the Land of Water the Village Hidden in the Mist, the Land of Lightning the Village Hidden in the Clouds, The Land of Wind the Village Hidden in the Sand, and the Land of Earth the Village Hidden in the Stones. Only the leaders of these hidden villages are permitted the name kage, which means shadow. Hokage, Mizukage, Raikage, Kazekage, Tsuchikage. These are the leaders, the five shadows that reign over thousands of ninja." I expanded.

"Then Lord Hokage is really important." Sakura said smiling. Both Naruto and Sakura seemed to doubt the old man, my teammates and I do it all the time though.

"Hey! You all just doubted Lord Hokage, didn't you? That's what you were thinking." Kakashi stated.

"Well anyway there are no ninja battles in a C-Ranked so you can relax." I said while messing with Sasuke's hair.

"And we're not going to run into any foreign ninja or anything like that." Sakura stated.

"Not likely." Kakashi said after he chuckled. I saw Tazuna's guilty looking face.

After a while we came close to a puddle and I used the ANBU signs to speak to Kakashi, 'so we let the Genin handle it?'

'Yes.' He signed back at me. When walking past the puddle I focused chakra into my foot and stomped across the puddle. Raiden was running around me in circles. Before I knew it I was bound by chains I replaced myself with a log. I watched as our substitutions were torn apart.

Raiden got defensive and started growling, "Kakashi-sensei, Mina-chan!" Naruto yelled in shock as they watched as both Kakashi and I were torn apart. I watched as the demon brothers of the mist appeared behind Naruto. As they pulled the chains Sasuke acted, he pulled a shiruken and kunai out. He threw the shiruken which pinned the chain to a tree and the kunai was used to secure the shiruken to the tree. Sasuke landed on their arms and kicked them in the face. Naruto was frozen in shock.

The brothers released the chains and split, one going towards Tazuna and Sakura and the other moved towards Naruto. Raiden jumped at the one that was aiming at Naruto and sunk his teeth into the arm. Raiden was smacked into the area I was in but not before he was scratched. I caught him and then moved to catch the one about to harm Naruto. I caught him using my chakra strings and held him in place. Naruto was on the floor and Kakashi had the other brother held by the neck.

"Hi." Kakashi said and I looked at Sasuke who happened to be glaring at me. I gave him a guiltless smile, no way I regret making him freak out. It shows he actually cares about me.

"What? You two used the replacement jutsu." Naruto said.

"Naruto sorry for not helping you right away. I didn't mean for you to get hurt, I just didn't think you'd freeze up like that." Kakashi walked towards Sasuke and Sakura, "Good job Sasuke, very smooth. You too Sakura." Kakashi said.

My eyebrow twitched, she didn't do a thing though. Even though she stood with a kunai she still did nothing. I heard Raiden whimper in pain and I started to heal him transferring the poison to me, the Demon brothers were known to have their weapons coated in poison. After a full minute the poison was in me and I heard Sasuke speak up, "Hey, you're not hurt are ya? Scaredy Cat."

"Sasuke!" He yelled. Naruto was about to run and I saw a cut on him.

"Naruto! Stand still, these ninja's have poison in their claws. We need to take it out of you quickly." Kakashi said

Naruto looked down at his hand, "You have to open up the wound and remove it. It's in your blood so don't move around, that spreads the poison." I said as I walked towards him.

"By the way Mr. Tazuna." Kakashi started.

"Yeah, what?" Tazuna asked.

"We need to talk." Kakashi said. He called me over to help him tie the Chunin up.

After I tied them up I stayed beside them with my kusarigama out, "They're Chunin from the Village Hidden in the Mist. Their specialty is relentless attack. They keep fighting no matter the sacrifice." I said informing the genin.

"How did you know about our ambush?" One of the brothers asked.

"Tsk. A puddle on a clear day, when it hasn't rained in weeks." I said.

"In that case, why'd you leave it for the genin to do the fighting?" Tazuna asked.

"We could have taken them out quickly but then we would have learned nothing. We had to know who their target was, and what they were after." Kakashi said.

"What are you getting at?" Tazuna asked.

"This. I wanted to know if they were after us, ninja attacking ninja. Or if they were after you, the master bridge builder. When you put in your request you asked for standard protection from robbers and highway kidnappers. You didn't say there were ninja looking for you, hunting you down. If we knew this, it would be a B-Ranked mission or higher. Our task was simply to get you to your destination and protect you while you finish building your bridge." Kakashi stated.

"If we knew we would be fielding attacks from enemy ninja we would have staffed differently and charged for the cost of a B mission. Apparently you have your reasons, but lying to us is not acceptable. We are now beyond the scope of this mission." I said looking at the genin. Sure this would not be a problem for Kakashi and I, however, they are not ready for this.

"We're genin this is too advanced for our level of training. We should go back, and I really think we need to treat Naruto's wound and get the poison out as soon as possible. Back in our village we can take him to a doctor." Sakura said. I flailed my arms around, I completely forgot about the scratch!

"Naruto's hand could become a problem. I guess we should go back to the village." Kakashi said. I watched as Naruto pulled out a kunai and stabbed his hand.

"Why am I so different? Why am I always, argh." Naruto complained.

"Naruto, stop that! What are you doing?" Sakura asked him.

"I worked so hard to get here. Pushing myself until it hurt. Training alone for hours or with my sister for long days. Anything to get stronger to reach my dream. I will never back down again and let someone else rescue me. I will never run away and I will not lose to Sasuke. Upon this wound I make this pledge, believe it. Bridge builder, I'll complete this mission and I'll protect you with this kunai knife. A real ninja never gives up and neither will I. Don't you guys worry about me, I'll be fine. Now let's go" Naruto said. I smiled, Like brother, like sister. I remember doing the same thing once to my thigh.

"Naruto, uh... that was really cool how you took out all the poison and all but if you lose anymore blood, you're going to die." Kakashi bluntly said.

Naruto started to shake and Kakashi appeared behind him, "Good idea to stop the bleeding now, seriously." He said.

Naruto started flailing his arms around, "I'm too young for it to end like this." Naruto yelled freaking out.

"Naruto, give me your hand." I said between giggles. I started healing it and watched as it closed much more quickly than it should, so the nine tails is helping me here. I checked to see if he got all the poison out and he did thankfully.

"Onee-chan, you have a very serious look on your face you're scaring me. Am I okay?" Naruto asked.

I reached into my left pouch and pulled out some bandages, "Yeah, have I ever let you down?" I asked. He smiled and shook his head. I pulled out a blank scroll and started writing on it. The team went on ahead and I summoned a wolf.

"Minako?" The black and gold wolf asked.

"Daki, take this scroll to Sarutobi-sensei. No one is to touch the scroll other than him, other than that once you are done you may dismiss yourself." I said as I gave it to him. He nodded and took off back to Konoha. I turned to the demon brothers and killed them. I sealed their bodies in another scroll which I use for when I am out on bounties. I have four bodies in here which add up to about two million extra ryo for the village. I turned and checked Raiden over once again and smiled, he's getting better that's good. I ran after the team and caught up to them before they boarded a boat. I sat down next to Naruto and once the boat started moving my soul seeped out of me. I took that time to look around and noticed that there was a very thick fog.

After an hour the rower talked, "The bridge isn't far now. Our destination is just ahead, the Land of Waves." The uncompleted bridge finally came into view.

"Woah, it's huge!" Naruto yelled. I slapped my hand over his mouth, weakly.

"Quiet! I told you no noise. Why do you think we're traveling like this, huh. Cutting off the engine and rowing, moving through the dense fog so that they don't see us." The rower said.

"Mr. Tazuna, before we reach the pier. I want to ask you something." Kakashi started, "The men who are after you, I need to know why? If you don't tell us, I'm afraid I'll have to end this mission when we drop you ashore." He said.

We looked at him waiting for the answer, "I have no choice but to tell you, no I want you to know the truth. Like you said this is beyond the scope of the original mission. The one who seeks my life is a very short man who casts a very long and deadly shadow." Tazuna said.

"A deadly shadow?" Kakashi questioned.

It was silent for a moment before Kakashi spoke up again, "Who is it?"

"You know him, at least I'm sure you've heard his name before. He's one of the wealthiest men in the world. The shipping magnet Gato." Tazuna said.

My soul returned to my body quickly at the name, "The shrimp? We are talking of Gato from Gato transport, right?" I asked causing everyone's attention to turn to me.

"Everyone knows him he's a business leader." Kakashi said.

"This is why I love being involved with Ibiki ninety percent of the time. What you don't know is that this shrimp has always been working behind the scenes as a drug lord. Using gangs and low class ninja." I said as I tightened my fist and my soul once again left my body. I hate boats and riding on them.

"It was one year ago when Gato first set his sight on the Land of Waves. He came to our island and used his vast wealth to take total control of our transport and shipping. Anyone who tried to stand in his way simply disappeared. In an island nation the man who controls the sea, controls everything. Finance, government, our very lives, but there's one thing he fears, the bridge. When it is complete it will join us to the land and that will break his control. I am the bridge builder." Tazuna said.

"So that's it, since you're in charge of the bridge you're standing in this gangster's way." Sakura said.

"That means those guys we fought in the forest, they were working for Gato." Sasuke said.

"I don't understand, if you knew he was dangerous you knew he would send ninja to eliminate you. Why did you hide that from us?" Kakashi asked.

Once again my soul momentarily returned, "Kakashi, you don't understand. When Gato takes over small nations they end up in poverty. You have not seen the things he does and the lives he ruins." I said.

"The common people who are building this bridge, they can't pay for a A or B-Ranked mission. It's too expensive. If you end the mission when you drop me ashore there will be no bridge. They'll assassinate me before I reach home. But don't feel bad about that, of course my sweet little grandson will be upset. He will cry 'Granddad! I want my granddad!' oh and my daughter will condemn the ninja of the Hidden Leaf denouncing and blaming you for abandoning her father and living her life in sorrow." Tazuna said as he tried to guilt trip us.

"Sooo, are we going through with the mission Kakashi?" I asked. Raiden started to stir awake.

"It appears that we have no other choice, we'll have to keep guarding you." Kakashi said.

"Oh, I am grateful." Tazuna said.

"We're approaching the shore. Tazuna, we've been very fortunate no one has noticed us so far." The rower said.

"Nice going." Tazuna said. We went through a tunnel and came out of the tunnel to a different area. The area was beautiful in my opinion with trees growing in the water. We were dropped off at a pier and the rower left Tazuna turned towards us, "Okay, take me to my home and I mean get me there in one piece." Tazuna said.

"You could at least say please." I mumbled and a fist connected to my head, "Kakashi! Stop with the Co-sensei abuse!" I yelled. The next ninja we encounter won't be chunin, they'll be jounin. We had been walking for a while and when Naruto ran ahead I froze, someone was around us, in the bushes to the left. Naruto threw a kunai at the bushes freaking everyone out. Who ever had been there, relocated themselves.

"It's just a mouse." Naruto said and Raiden jumped out my arms going to retrieve the kunai. He bounced back to me and jumped up. I caught him and took the kunai while also ignoring Sakura's yelling.

"Ne, Naruto they're kunai knives. They're dangerous dattebane." I said while I put the kunai in my pouch.

I looked to the bush in the right side of us and Naruto threw a kunai, "Over there!"

Sakura hit Naruto and Raiden started growling at her, "Raiden, not now. You can chase the fangirl later." I said while I pushed my chakra out so that it can tell me where the person is hiding now. Apparently Naruto almost killed a rabbit and he apologized to it. I froze, White rabbit? Not winter time, a replacement technique! So they're here already? Who will it be this time?

"Look out!" Kakashi yelled.

"Everyone get down!" I yelled while I jumped over the sword summoning my Kusarigama chain. The sword embedded itself in the tree and someone stood on it facing away from us.

"Well, well, if it isn't Zabuza Momochi. Rogue ninja from the Village Hidden in the Mist." Kakashi stated. Naruto started to run and I held my arm out after Raiden jumped out of them.

"You're in the way, get back." I said keeping my eyes on the Demon of the Mist. I encountered him once when I was nine and barely made it back home to Naruto.

"But why?!" Naruto yelled.

"He's not like those other ninja. He's in a whole other league." I said and I released the genjutsu on me.

"I'll be needing this." Kakashi said putting a hand on his headband.

"Kakashi of the Sharingan eye, Minako of the Kage no Akuma's, did I get that right?" Zabuza started, "It's too bad huh, but you'll have to hand over the old man." Zabuza said.

"Now quick Manji formation. Protect the bridge builder and stay out of the fight." Kakashi said.

"We taught you teamwork now use it." I said and Kakashi pulled his headband up revealing the sharingan.

"Everyone keeps on saying Sharingan, Sharingan. Will someone please tell me what sharingan is?" Naruto asked.

"Sharingan a rare power that resides in the eyes. The user of this visual jutsu or doujutsu can instantly see and comprehend any genjutsu, taijutsu, and ninjutsu and reflect the attack back on the attacker. The Sharingan is a special rare form of doujutsu. However, there's more to the sharingan than that, a lot more." Sasuke said.

"You got it right boy, but you only scratched the surface. The sharingan can analyze an opponent's technique and then copy it to the smallest detail." Mist started to fill the area around us, "As for you jounin, in the assassination unit of the Mist, we had a standing order to destroy you on sight and take the girl captive. Both your profiles were in the bingo book, they called you the man who copied a thousand jutsu, Kakashi the copy ninja. The girl who controls the shadows and makes you her human puppet then tears you to shreds, Minako Uzumaki." It was silent for a while, "Enough talking, I need to exterminate the old man." The genin surrounded Tazuna, "So I'll have to eliminate you two first? So be it." Zabuza disappeared from my sight and then he appeared by the water.

He's building up a lot of chakra, damn it he's using the hidden mist jutsu! "He vanished." Naruto said.

"Sensei?" Sakura called out worriedly.

"He'll come after us first." Kakashi said.

"But who is he?" Sakura asked. I think I need to get them to start reading the bingo books.

"Zabuza Momochi the ex-leader of the Hidden Mist assassination unit. He's the master of the silent killing technique." I answered Sakura.

"S-silent?" Naruto questioned.

"As the name suggests. It happens in an instant without sound or warning of any kind. It's so fast that you pass from this life without even realizing what happened." I said.

"The sharingan cannot fully neutralize it, so don't lower your guard." Kakashi said.

"Well if we fail, we only lose our lives." I said calmly.

"How can you say that?" Sakura questioned.

Wind blew by and the mist started to thicken, "The mist is getting thicker and thicker." Naruto said.

"The Land of Waves is surrounded by ocean. The swirling mists are ever present." Tazuna said.

"Sensei!" Sakura called out I made two water clones and I stayed in the field while the clones hid in the tree's.

"Eight points." Zabuza said.

"What's that?" I heard Sakura question.
