Chapter Twenty-One
Looking down at the plate that is set on the table, you don't even realize that you're being spoken to. You quickly move your eyesight to the speaking person and try your best to listen to him. The stern man, who only let's you call him Master Hyuga, keeps a straight and unwavering jaw towards you. By the look of his eyes, you could tell that he's irritated at your distance. "Oh I apologize, I was just appreciating the great food you have delivered me. I'm listening now." You say as your heart sinks to your stomach.
The heaviness of your chest has taken away all of the appetite your stomach could muster. It was thanksgiving night. And Neji had invited you over to eat since you didn't have your parents or any other family. Any person would assume that you were desperately lonely. Because any person would not assume that you're dating someone else that doesn't permit your loneliness take toll. The planning you had made with Kakashi for this night went to complete waste.
The first thing you did you did once Neji asked you to come over was inform Kakashi of it. You had decided to reject the offer but Kakashi convinced you otherwise. If it's necessary, it's necessary. His monotone voice rings in your head but you knew well that he wasn't emotionless about this.
"I asked: What do you plan to do once you graduate?"
"Oh well I'm planning to be a writer. Hoping to do my bachelor's degree in English Literature, hopefully, at Autumn University. My GPA is more than enough to enter to be honest, but I hope I can participate in some extracurricular activities. Well, I say extracurricular but they really have to do with my career. Like entering some competitions and such. Actually, this year the english professor from Leaf High offered me to represent the school in this year's competition. Since I'll be representing the short story section, I was hoping that in university I could maybe do the poem ones instead. I'm not amazing at it yet but I hope that in a near future, I'll become tremendously confident in myself." You say, pride written all over your face. But you knew that being so specific in details and accomplishments was going to be a mistake.
A strange smile erupts on Hinata's father. You obviously picked up his interest, when you should've done the opposite. It could have been an excuse to stop dating Neji in a future. But it was too late.
Realizing that you didn't answer his question really, you clear your throat and set down your utensils. "Not really the type of writer that writes books and lives in the world of doubt whether they will succeed or not. I have a great interest in different types of lore. Work in a company that needs a story for a show, movie, popular characters. Do not confuse it with a script writer though. Script writers utilize the story I'd have written to develop such. But I do plan to pursue book writing as a hobby." He nods appealingly at your words and it obviously surprises Hinata and Neji both. Their faces could send the message easily. Naruto, on the other hand, was too indulged in the food that was at hand.
He had served himself, from the thanksgiving buffet, rice with green peas, turkey, beef, noodles and almonds. The happiness in his eyes were written in capital letters. You didn't doubt that he possibly didn't even hear your words.
"Now leave her be uncle. We should give appreciation to the food provided and eat." Neji says after recovering by the surprise, eyeing the man. An act that shocked you fully. You had a feeling their relationship was a bit submissive but it made you happy to be wrong. It was clear once Master Hyuga nodded. I mouth a thank you to Neji before we begin to eat after being thankful.
The food tastes good. But for some reason, it's just very difficult to appreciate it's flavor and swallow. You feel a delicate hand on your left knee and turn to it, spotting Hinata's worried expression. "You can do this." She says lowly. You give her slow nod as you tried your best to be optimistic.
You force at least most of the food down your throat and decide to be full for the rest of the night. Once you push away the plate set in front of you, Neji leans in to your ear and whispers. "Hope you're prepared for more of his interest." You give Neji an exhausted smile and shrug.
"Who knew? A week in and I'm already meeting the family." You say with some passive aggressiveness but you're glad he doesn't catch the tone. Or at least he doesn't believe it was directed towards him.
But sadly it was. You just couldn't seem to contain your irritation. The first date is supposed to be the movie theaters or a restaurant. Not a thanksgiving dinner in their home. It's too big of a step and it has gotten you in a bad mood. But you understand that you need to keep your role in all of this. It can't be betrayed by your feelings.
Even though at the thought of it all, you cannot blame Neji. He just didn't want to make you feel alone. Maybe he didn't even find it weird to invite you over since it's as if Hinata is inviting you. You're finally in your best friend's home and you're angry about it. You're angry about receiving some great food. You're angry about having Master Hyuga have an interest in your life. You're angry about having to act as if you are dating Neji.
And you're angry at yourself for being a crybaby about it.
Kakashi would be very disappointed in you at this moment. Or at least that is what you think.
"It is interesting to see someone take a career so simple when there are so many offers. Doctors and surgeons or therapists are the ones that are truly needed in this world. Are you sure about this?" Master Hyuga says.
So much for interest. More like amusement.

"It's really fine. Don't worry about it." You tell Neji as you begin to exit his home. Walking side by side.
It was a tough night in general. Having Master Hyuga on your back, being disrespectful about your interests. You're thankful that you didn't react negatively to any of his comments.
Neji's eyes were full of something you can't quite depict. Sadness? No. Disappointment? No. "It's not personal. He does this to anyone who doesn't want to be a doctor or lawyer. He can't seem to understand that other careers are needed in the world. If I ever do work in a hospital, I'd need a writer to make the forms and registrations. Minorities, is what he calls them." He says with a hint of irritation.
You now stand in front of your vehicle and land your hand on Neji's shoulder. "Let him call it whatever he wants. I like it. And I appreciate your annoyance at his arrogance." You say. "Thank you for tonight." His eyes now glance at your lips and you gulp in your throat as you realize what he's thinking of. Your heart begins to thrum in your chest as he leans in close to you slowly. Not the type of nerves a girl would get in this occasion. The thought of a man simply touching you makes your stomach turn upside down and your breaths go uneven. Before you could permit him to give you a physical touch, quickly, you walk away to your car. Practically running. Neji blinks at your footsteps in surprise before standing out of the car's way. He didn't seem bothered by the action, just in surprised.
Once you enter the car and close the door, you feel relief and safety from something unwanted. As you fasten your seatbelt, you give Neji a wave and a simple glance. Not daring to take a good look at his face. When the engine of the car roars to life, you drive off out of the Hyuga's driveway.
"Ugh!" You scream at yourself, letting all of the anger that has built itself in you. "How long do I have to put up with this?" You sigh to yourself as you bang your head softly against the stirring wheel. As you pass the street in the dark of the night, tears brimmed themselves in your eyes.
The frustration and guilt you have is becoming unbearable. Neji doesn't deserve this. He deserves a girl that is completely infatuated by him. A girl that thinks of him every night. That get's butterflies in her stomach at the thought of him trying to kiss her. The giddiness in her chest thinking about him smiling at her.
But someone else deserves all of that as well. But that person already has it.
Once you arrive at your complex, you park your car and head on to the elevator. The moonlight was shining against your hair before you press on the elevator's button. There weren't many people around. You assumed it was because they were in their family's home having a sweet dinner. So the night was pleasantly silent. The dim light of the building were nice as well.
After a couple of minutes and walking, you stand in front of your apartment and slip the key in with a sigh. But as you turn the lock, your ears pick up a muffled sound of music. Though you're not sure whether it's playing behind the door or your neighbors. You lean your ear in and listen to the delicate piano playing.
Chopin.
You open the door instantly and you eyes widen at the sight. There were autumn leaves all over the floor. Orange, red and yellow everywhere. There was a small pumpkin near the door as well. And you notice that the leaves were leading a trail. Many candles were lit everywhere as well. So the scent of vanilla and pumpkin perfumed the air.
Your eyes close slowly as you can't help but listen to the fantastic music. Along the while, you inhale the great smells. "I'm glad you're pleased." The voice you know too well sounds a small distance away. Your eyes shoot open as you see Kakashi standing at the counter of your kitchen. There was pumpkin pie set down on it along with some cups full of some wine. "Welcome home." The man you're head over heels for says.
You couldn't tell what was more beautiful. The scenario he just created or simply himself. Kakashi was wearing a brown formal coat on with a white buttoned shirt underneath. And of course, his exposed face was handsome as usual.
The bad night you were just having is being drained away slowly by the sight, smell and sound Kakashi has provided you. The last thing you expected was a surprise like this. "This is just what I needed." You say as a smile erupts on your face along with tears streaming down your cheeks. Kakashi quickly makes his way towards your side and holds your hands tight as you sob desperately. "I'm such a disaster and here you are picking up my pieces as always. What did I ever do to deserve you, Kakashi? This is so beautiful!" You say as you glance at the yellow and orange flowers that are on the counter in a vase.
"Be yourself. That's just what you did." He says softly against your ear. His height was towering over you as you land your head onto his chest. The music and his warmth were being very helpful to your chest. Altogether calming you down greatly.
"Kakashi..." you say lowly as your heart thrums in your chest in pleasure. You let go of the hug softly and bulged your hands in his coat as you gazed into his dark eyes. His look was so soft and captivating to you that you felt the need to finally tell him important words. But how could you express something so important with just words? How could they ever be enough? "What I'm just about to tell you isn't nearly enough of what I feel for you." You sniffle as you wipe away your tears from your face. You could feel your mascara slide down your cheeks. "No words could ever be enough for my feelings for you. Ever." Your hands land on his cheeks as you give a joyous smile. A sincere smile that no one could ever find so beautiful as Kakashi does. "I love you, Kakashi." You finally let the words off your chest, feeling a satisfaction, not only from the feeling, but from the look on his face as well.
His teeth shake as he smiles at you as well. His monotone demeanor doesn't even exist at this moment. The emotions he feels are completely bare. "And I love you, (Y/N)." He says before he kisses you passionately.
You hold on to the words tightly. Not wanting to ever let go of them. You've never felt this way before. Not for anyone, and you're happy that Kakashi is the first man to ever hear the words from you.
Because he's the one who deserves great things as well.
