Chapter Eighteen
Who knew that after a considered strong tropical storm, the day could be so bright just a day after? The morning sun was it's bright yellow, shining down upon all of the students of Hidden Leaf High. Everyone is heading towards their class, first period. Normal. Laughing, smiling, speaking to their friends, happy. But you were all but that.
The beat of your heart was accelerating at the sight of the crowd. Thoughts of how you're supposed to approach your friends were coming up. And they were tremendously terrifying. Staring at all of them, you jump instantly as you feel a hand on your shoulder. Your head turns at the touch and you see a smiling Kiba. But his smile was quickly drained away as he noticed your uneven breaths. Your stomach was churning thanks to all of the heavy breathing you were having, the anxiety eating up your insides. The heavy heart in you was now slowly coming back to normal as you step back a bit from your dear friend. The hurt on his face was evident nonetheless though.
"(Y/N)? Hey... are you alright?" Worry was dripping out of his mouth as your eyes blink quickly. The question was genuine. It wasn't one of those Hey are you alright? Say yes so I don't have to be burdened.
You shut your eyes and take a deep breath before opening them to him. The lie you want to spill is being very difficult though. "Kiba. Hi. I'm glad to see you after the-" you were having a hard time saying the word. Typhoon. The damn typhoon. "-storm." You say after a pause of thought. But you weren't convincing him in the least.
Kiba's eyes glanced around your surrounding. His tongue clicked as his eyes were scanning through the crowd. He knew well that something was wrong. But maybe it was wise to not speak of it here. Sensing how you drifted away from his question. "Let's find Hinata. I'm curious about Naruto staying over at her place." He tries his best to smile, but you were brushing off how fake it was.
You nod, thankful for the attempt of the subject change. Heading towards the building, your heart lifts at the thought of Hinata having a nice time with Naruto in the very near future. "Yeah I am too. I know my dad never would've let me bring a guy to thanksgiving, less stay over. But I'm happy for them. I really hope things work out." A smile creeps onto your face slowly as you glance at Kiba. As you both were arriving the entrance, you spot some familiar dark haired persons in the corner of your eye. Your head turns to them and Kiba does the same, noticing as well.
"Speaking of the devil."
There Hinata was, walking out of the white comfortable vehicle. A family car, you assumed. But surprise filled as you as witness Neji joining her. Hinata smiles at the sight of you guys and waves, making her way to you guys quickly. Behind her is her cousin after parking the car.
For some reason, your nerves were all over the place at the sight of him. But you don't express it, trying very hard not to. The smile on your face twitches against your nervous figure. "Hinata," you surprisingly say.
You weren't realizing the also tense person next to you. Kiba's teeth grit at the sight of Neji approaching you both. His hands were in his pants but you notice them balling into a fist, spotting the shape coming from it. You grip onto your thick winter jacket as your heart was going back to being heavy.
"Good morning, Kiba, (Y/N). I hope your homes are alright after the disaster." She smiles at you both before her cousin does the same. You grab Hinata's hand and hold on to it tightly, grateful to see your great friend unfazed after the typhoon. Unlike you.
"(Y/N), how are you?" Neji's voice startles you. Not because of it being unexpected, but the words he says have pushed you on edge. On the brink of breaking. You gulp down the knot in your throat and keep your smile on your face. Becoming a shaky one though.
You don't answer him. As if your smile could be enough, but it wasn't. "Can I have a moment with her?" Neji asks both Hinata and Kiba, shooing them away. The dark haired female quickly nods startled, with a small jump. She tugs Kiba's arm but he was on the ground firm. Glaring at Neji. Your eyes look down and you clear your throat. Both boys were making you feel uncomfortable. Akamaru barks at him, giving a low growl. He was sensing his owner's emotions, not wanting to give away either. You smile at the sweet dog and grab him into your arms. "Hey little guy."
Kiba's tenseness drains away at the sight of you holding Akamaru. He could tell that the small puppy was making you feel better. "Right." He says before slowly walking away from you both. You were beginning to feel nervous being alone with Neji. But the little puppy made it difficult to stay with the anxiety.
The boy in front of you moves his hand towards the puppy slowly, to pet his head. But Akamaru quickly growls. His hand nugdes back the instant the dog's clack sounds from closing his mouth to bite. He shakes his hand as his eyes go wide, surprised at the dog. A chuckle erupts from your throat at the moment. "Bad Akamaru, bad." You say but the tone just made him giddy.
A gulp sounds from Neji's throat before he brushes off the situation with a nervous laugh. "Just like his owner."
"Well, Tenten is a good friend of his. He's probably still angry at you." Your voice is gentle as you land a kiss on Akamaru's head. Causing him to lick your cheek. You don't dare glance at Neji. Not wanting to give him the wrong idea of the sorts. So you weren't realizing the look he was giving you. His eyes were squinted in a surprised way. As if it said: You have no idea what's going on, do you?
He blinks the look away and smiles at your kindness with the dog. Neji licks his lips as his hand runs up to his neck, scratching it nervously. "So, (Y/N), I was wondering if maybe...maybe you'd..." his voice trails away. As if his mind as gone blank. Your eyes land onto his face finally, wondering what he is about to say. "Maybe you'd like to go out one of these days," He says finally. But you laugh as you realize that he doesn't do this much. Neji blinks at your entertainment and his ears turn red. "I mean, go out with me. Me."
"Of course with you," you pause. Taking a deep breath from the now thick air. Your heart was racing as your nerves were prickling down your spine. Giving you chills. You sniff with your red nose that was running due to the cold weather. The sun was being clouded by a large cloud. And your heart sinks into your stomach at the sight of it. "I'm sorry Neji. I don't think I would like that. You seem like an interesting person but-" you pause, searching for a way to let him down without hurting him. But you knew that wasn't possible. "-no." You turn your head away from him and walk ahead. Not giving him a chance to speak again. Your eyes weren't on him at all. The suffocating air would've gotten worse for you if you did. And you already had a tight chest.
You head directly to your first period, not bothering trying to find your close friends. You sit down in your usual class seat. Wishing so much you had picked a seat in the back of the classroom. You grab your earphones and plugged them in softly. Classical music would calm you down. You were sure of it.
But now, you were beginning to feel eyes on your back. Your cell phone was in hand, ready to put some music on. But the chatter was disturbing you. Your fingers motion as if you turn the music on though you're truly eavesdropping.
She's Kakashi's pet. I bet my life that he does her on his desk for a good grade.
I think so too. She stays behind after class too often. Don't you think that's weird?
What a whore.
Your eyes fill with tears as your heart drops into your stomach. Once again, the air thickens. Your heart shakes. Your chest feels heavy. And suddenly, everything feels too crowded. "Alright class. Settle down, let's begin." Your professor Sarutobi starts but you cannot hear him. Only the sound of your heart quakes into your ears. You stand up, slamming your hands against the seat and rush out of the classroom. Silencing all of the chatter of the room. Your teacher calls out to you, but you don't listen. You don't want to listen to anyone. You won't.
