Chapter Eight: Reality
"We don't know why they wanted to kill you, but we can confirm some of the attackers identities." As the Mizukage spoke, everyone anxiously listened.
"All of them are supposed to have died years ago, which makes the situation even stranger."
Team Hitomi all stood in the Mizukage's office, lined up and anxious.
"So we are either dealing with runaway cultist or some sort of reincarnations?" Hitomi replied, crossing her arms with an unamused expression.
"Precisely," Mei replied, nodding.
"That's messed up," Raiden complained, rubbing his head.
Messed up is an understatement. Is reincarnation even real? And if so, why on earth would someone go to those lengths to kill me? A cult would make more sense, perhaps killing losers like myself is their goal.
Thoughts rushed through Uta's head.
"Until we have more information your team won't be given any missions outside of the village for safety reasons."
"Fantastic," Miyuki sighed, patting Uta on the shoulder.
"Go out and have fun tonight, worry about this tomorrow," Hitomi instructed the teenagers, looking them with a carefree expression.
Miyuki grinned widely, "you don't have to tell us twice," with that she grabbed Uta and Raiden by the arms and dragged them from the room.
"Maybe we should get dinner somewhere?" Raiden softly offered, letting himself be dragged along.
"That probably won't end well, but let's try it," Miyuki laughed finally letting go.
It hadn't started well when they found a nice looking restaurant near to their house. As soon as they entered the door, the waiter was asking them to leave.
"We're not animals! Let us eat here!" Miyuki yelled, loudly slamming her hands onto the counter causing many customers to jump in fright.
"You cannot! Your're already disturbing our guests! Get out!" The waiter retorted, gritting his teeth as his grip onto the notepad increased.
"We are? You're not even letting your guests eat here! I'll fucking dissect you."
"Aha! Don't mind her, she gets mood swings." Raiden nervously smiled as he slapped his hand over Miyuki's mouth.
Her eyes narrowed as she glared at the waiter, her knuckles were turning white from the intensity of the balling of her fists.
Uta lowered her head letting out an exhausted sigh.
Why can't we just be like normal people? Don't we have the right to eat with others for once in our lives? She thought, lifting her gaze to observe the scene.
Miyuki was still struggling against Raiden's grip as she tried to lash out at the waiter. The waiter just stared in disgust as he yelled profanities at Raiden who held a tired smile as he accepted the abuse.
Stupid.
"Yahoo! Waiter!" A feminine voice greeted from inside the restaurant, causing many heads to turn. "What's all this ruckus about?"
All four of them focused their attention towards the voice. The source was a brunette girl, not very old. She was swinging back in her chair, waving her arm above her as she smiled indifferently.
"These imbeciles are not welcome here," the waiter growled to her. Her eyes widened and she gasped, leaping from her chair and came to stand before them.
"But they're so pretty, and pretty people should be allowed to eat in restaurants," her voice sounded like a whine, it irked Uta.
"What kind of argument is that?" The waiter replied astonished, scowling at the girl.
"Here, take my drink and find a table!" The girl cheerily forced a glass into Uta's palm, and gave the waiter a pat on his shoulder.
"You cannot do that."
"This is causing too much of a scene, let them stay," she suddenly growled, standing closer to the waiter. He visibly gulped, then nodded his head.
Satisfied, she smiled at all of them again, Miyuki was grinning , thanking the girl over and over in her mind.
Raiden looked like he had just been slapped with a wooden plank, his utter confusion plagued his expression.
Growling, the waiter stalked over to a wall where menus sat and began collecting all he needed to lay their table. Uta took a long sip of her new drink, she was thirsty she'd admit.
The girl then left them and skipped towards the restaurant door. "Bye bye."
She flashed a toothy smile across her shoulder before disappearing behind the door.
Uta's eyes suddenly widened as her grip on her cup failed.
Smash!
She stared at the door with horror as shards of glass were scattered across the ground.
"Uta!"
No it couldn't be.
"Oi! Uta! Shit here comes the waiter," Raiden hastily started pushing the glass into a pile on the ground.
That wasn't her, it couldn't have been, she repeated it over and over in her head, ignoring the protesting and frantic yells of her teammates.
"Oi! How dare you damage our property!" An angry voice growled from beside her. She snapped her attention to the waiter, who was glaring so hard she blinked in confusion.
But then she looked down and noticed the damaged cup and the puddle of water that it swam in.
"I'm terribly sorry," she apologised in a distant tone, only to flinch when the waiter stomped his feet, completely losing it.
"Get out!" He yelled, shutting his eyes tightly as his voice boomed through the room.
All three of them stared for a moment, before Miyuki scowled indignantly.
"We will leave! You ungrateful shit!" She spat, pulling herself away and glaring at him.
"C'mon Uta," Raiden finally snapped her from her thoughts as he held out his hand for her.
"Yeah, whatever." Uta answered taking it and letting him lead her away.
"How dare you!" The man spat back, his face was flushed with embarrassment. The anger was boiling inside of him as it took all himself to restrain from hitting the outcasts.
"We're out." Miyuki muttered, flicking a mocking wave to the remaining customers as they reached the door.
SLAM!
Uta flinched as the agitated female bashed the door closed behind them.
"We'll get Hitomi Sensei to get us takeaway or something," Raiden mumbled watching Miyuki stomp down the street towards home.
"You coming?"
Uta blinked in surprise as Raiden stood in front of her. "Huh?" She asked eyes wide with confusion and in a voice so soft Raiden only just heard it.
"Are you alright?" He asked with worry now looking down at her. Uta bit her lip, tears were beginning to build up in her eyes.
"I don't know," she whispered staring into Raiden's eyes. Raiden was shocked as Uta stared at him, confused as to what was happening.
He reacted without a second thought when she suddenly collapsed and landed in his arms.
"Uta!" Raiden yelled shaking her lightly. "C'mon Uta!" He tried again, but no response.
Gritting his teeth he bundled her in his arms and began to jog towards their house, ignoring the stares strangers were giving him. Miyuki flanked him, eyes wide with fear, shouting to ask what happened.
"Help!" Raiden yelled when he barged through the front door, holding a limp Uta.
Did she faint? Was she poisoned?
"Someone help!" He yelled once again, voice breaking.
"Raiden?" Hitomi came running from the hallway, alert.
"Something's wrong with Uta," he rushed out, "I think she's been poisoned."
"Poison? Lay her down", Hitomi ordered sternly.
Miyuki crawled to sit on the floor next to Uta as Raiden gently laid her across the couch. She bit her fingernails, tears brimming her eyes as she held Uta's hand tightly.
"Miyuki, go find a doctor, I'll do what I can for now," Hitomi once again ordered, summoning a scroll and biting her finger to draw blood.
"I'll be as fast as possible!" She yelled, already on her feet and sprinting out of the house.
"I'm not letting you die now," Hitomi growled, opening Uta's mouth. Her skin had started to go paler by he minute and a rash began to break along her skin. Raiden could here his heart throughout his head relentlessly.
"Neither am I," he announced, placing his palm to her sweating forehead gently and brushing back her fringe.
