Stumble and Limp

Cahira smiled, watching her husband as he played with their niece, Nadia. He chased her around the garden, and she squealed, trying to stay just out of reach of her uncle.

"You can't get me!" She shrieked, and he laughed, trying to grab her.
"I'm going to get you, Dia!" Cahira laughed, but the smile faded when she saw the broken bricks from the walkway in their path.
"Edmund, watch out!!" Nadia leaped nimbly over it, but Edmund didn't. He tripped, hitting the ground, and crying out in pain.

"Uncle Ed!!" Nadia cried out, running back, and Cahira leapt up, nearly tripping over her skirt as she ran over. She tried to help him straighten the leg, and he cried out again, squeezing his eyes shut.

"Nadia, go get your mum and dad!" She said, and the little girl ran off, yelling at the top of her lungs. Edmund hissed in pain, moving onto his back, and the pain was evident on his face as he forced his leg to straighten. A squirrel jumped down from a nearby tree, cocking its head and chittering at him.

"Cahira.....The squirrel's laughing at me." He groaned, and she chuckled slightly.
"Wouldn't be the first time. Sierra? That you?" The squirrel quickly turned into Edmund and Cahira's sister-in-law, who was chuckling slightly.

"Are you able to walk at least?" She asked, the amusement fading from her face. He gripped her outstretched hand, but cried out, his knees buckling when he put weight on the injured knee. At that moment, Peter came running from around a corner, and somehow managed to help Sierra and Cahira catch Edmund. Nadia watched from a distance, tears pouring down her cheeks. Edmund looked up, and saw her, knowing exactly why she was crying, and his heart broke for her. She thought it was her fault this had happened. He smiled reassuringly at her, and she managed a weak smile. Later, he groaned, hearing what the doctor had said.

"Two months?! It's not that bad!" He complained, trying to stand, but Cahira gently pushed him back down, glaring at him.

"Edmund, it hurts you to move the knee. It's that bad. And you're going to listen to what someone else says for once in your life. Because if you don't, I happen to know of a couch that would always appreciate some company." He winced and bit his lip, forcing down another complaint as Sierra chuckled quietly.

"Did it have to be now that you mess up your knee? Now I'm stuck meeting with the Calormene ambassadors by myself!" Sierra and Cahira laughed, and Edmund chuckled quietly.
"Have to admit, I'm not too upset about that part of things. You'll survive. And maybe Sierra would go with you." She smiled slightly, slipping her hand into her husband's.

"I wouldn't completely mind that." She said, and he kissed the top of her head. Nadia poked her head in, and Edmund smiled, waving her in as Peter, Sierra, and Lucy left. The cordial hadn't mended his leg at all, but it had helped with the pain.

"Hey, Dia. What's wrong?" She looked up, tears filling her bright blue eyes.
"Was it my fault your knee got hurt? Am I not allowed to play with you anymore?" He chuckled slightly, and Cahira lifted her onto the bed, sitting beside Edmund.
"It's not your fault, Dia. I wasn't paying enough attention. And when my leg gets better, you'll be able to play with me again. I just might have a limp for a little while." She tilted her head, a confused expression appearing on her face.
"What's a limp?" He smiled, ruffling her hair.
"It's when someone can't walk as fast, and their walking is a bit off." She giggled.
"Oh. Like when mummy had baby Benjamin in her stomach? She was walking really funny." He laughed, not seeing the look on Cahira's face that warned him to be careful.

"You could say that. That's just what happens sometimes when people get hurt or are going to have a baby." Cahira smirked, crossing her arms.
"Oh, so I guess that's going to happen to me as well." He froze, turning to her, and Nadia nearly squealed.
"You're gonna have a baby?! Can I go tell mummy and daddy?!" She asked, and Cahira smiled.
"Go for it." She took off, yelling for her parents, and Edmund smiled at his wife.
"You're going to be a mum soon." He said softly, and she smiled back, kissing him. They pulled back, and Edmund couldn't get rid of the smile on his face. Other than the bum knee, everything was perfectly fine.
