Risk and Race

Edmund sat beside Cahira, who was still unconscious and deathly pale. It had been nearly seven days, and Drinilan had been refusing to tell them what he had used to poison her, so they had absolutely no idea how to cure her. Suddenly, Sierra nearly burst in, her chest heaving, and her face slightly red, like she'd been sprinting a long way. She had a book in her hands, and a strip of cloth marked a page.

"I figured it out. The poison." She gasped, moving over and laying the book on the bed beside Cahira.
"It's called Nightshade, and it causes the same symptoms she's been having. But....." Her voice trailed off, and he looked up at her, worried.

"Is there no cure?" He asked, panicked, and she took a deep breath.
"There is a cure. But.....There's a catch. The Nightshade, if left untreated," She read, her voice shaking.
"If left untreated, it will cause death ten to twelve days after the victim has ingested it." Edmund's face paled, and he nearly shot up.
"Where can I find a cure? Is there even a possible cure?" Sierra grimaced slightly, flipping a couple pages to reveal a map. She traced a line, and put her finger down on a spot nearly the sea, but close to Calormene.

"Here. There's something called Fenna. Apparently that's the only thing that can reverse the effects of Nightshade. And it's in a rocky, cliff filled area. Most people who go to that area for the fenna don't ever come back." He sighed, rubbing his forehead, and paced a little bit. He turned to Sierra, and she saw the determined look in his eyes.

"I'm going. I'm going whether you like it or not, and I'm going with or without you." She sighed, nodding slowly.
"I figured you'd say that. And I'm going with you. Peter wouldn't be happy with me if I let you die." He nodded, and then turned, kissing Cahira's forehead.
"I won't let you die." He whispered, and turned to leave. Within ten minutes, he and Sierra were saddled up and heading out.

"How long do we have to go until we get there?" She took a deep breath.
"About a day. It's going to be a stretch. We've got three days, and it's going to be really tricky." He nodded, gritting his teeth, and stared straight ahead. She watched her brother-in-law, and it almost hurt to see him like that. So angry, and all because of something he couldn't control. She saw a tear trickle down his cheek, and gritted her teeth. They sped on ahead, not even stopping for the night. They reached the canyon by noon the next day, and Sierra sighed.

"I see one. Alright.....I'll change to a griffin. Do you want me to fly you down, or should I go by myself?" He shook his head, sighing.
"I'll go down with you." She took a deep breath, changing, and grabbed his legs with her claws.
"Whoa!! Hey!! Upside-down?!" He yelled at her, and she cawed, giving him a dirty look, despite being a bird. He took a breath, and tried to not squirm, so that she wouldn't drop him. She glided down, hovering just over the blooming plant. He gently pulled it out, roots and all, and she soared back up.

"We got it." She smiled, and he grinned, mounting his horse, who happened to be Philip's great-great-grandson. They headed back as fast as they could, but still arrived close to nightfall.....On the third day. Edmund sprinted in, nearly crashing into Peter, and Sierra yelled for him.

"Wait!! You have to grind up the leaves, make them into a powder." He looked at her, his eyes wild with fear.
"Sierra, what if I'm not fast enough? She might not make it!" She grabbed his arm, stopping him, and looked her brother-in-law right in the eye.
"Edmund, this is her best change. If you get your rear end moving and grind it up right this moment, you've.
got more time. Now, go!!" He took off towards the kitchen, coming back five minutes later with a glass of water and a bowl of the powder. He and Sierra went back up to the room Cahira was in, finding her still laying there, pale, but just barely breathing.

"Can I just put it in the water and let her drink it?" She nodded, and he carefully poured it in, sitting on the bed beside her.

"Please work." He whispered, gently wrapping an arm around her and tilting her back. He put the glass to her lips, pouring it into her mouth. Sierra sat nearby, watching nervously, and Edmund gently rubbed her throat, getting her to swallow it. He lay her back down, and nervously waited, watching. After a few minutes, she gasped, shooting up. She looked at Edmund, and tried to stay up, a loopy grin on her face.

"M...I'm.....okay......" She slurred, and then dropped back into the pillows, asleep. He breathed a sigh of relief, kissing her on the forehead. She was going to be okay, and he wasn't ever going to let something like that happen again.
