He paused and took a deep, shuddering breath before turning the door knob.

She was cooking dinner and turned around at the closing of the door. The smile died on her lips.

He managed a shaky smile, but she hurried over to him and pulled him into an embrace. He buried his face in her shoulder and was still for a moment. Then a sob shook him.

“I watched a 17-year-old kid die out there today! Some days, I hate being a cop.”

“It's okay, James. It's okay."

“Thank God I've got you, Katie.”

She held him tighter.

It's not easy being a cop... We often don't see this human side of a police officer and we kind of think they are heartless people when the truth is they face death every day to keep us safe. My respect is due...
