Twenty One

Jin clutched Yejun’s hand tightly as they reached the doors to the music room. He turned to Yejun and gave the boy a small, encouraging smile, the most that he could muster, before turning and opening the doors.

Jin was stiff as he walked in, letting Yejun skip up to Desung and seat himself onto the bench at the piano. Jin himself went to the corner of the room and sat, his back straight and his eyes focused.

But his hands trembled ever so slightly when Desung glanced at him.

But all he got was a smile, which sent shivers down the man’s spine.

Desung jumped right into the lesson, getting a feel for how much Yejun already knew and then going from there.

For the whole lesson, Jin sat there, not saying a thing, just keeping his eyes trained carefully on Yejun and Desung.

When the lesson was over, Jin stiffened a bit more. Yejun scampered out of the room, leaving the two of them alone.

Desung slowly got up from his seat, and Jin began to shake even more, his face going pale.

The instructor slowly turned, looking at Jin.

He smiled once more, bowing, and then walked out.

Jin stood quickly, wanting to get out of the room before the man turned around and walked back in. He didn’t want that to happen, and if he was going to walk away, then Jin was going to flee while he still had the chance.

Jin made it to Yejun’s room and sighed in relief, seeing that the boy was okay.

But it was confusing to Jin, why Desung hadn’t said anything to him, even though he’d had the chance, seeing as they’d been left alone. But Jin shook his head. He didn’t want to think about any of it, and if the man wasn’t going to approach him, then Jin wasn’t going to wish for him to.

With a more relaxed posture, Jin spent the rest of the day playing with Yejun.

The next day, Jin was in the kitchen bright and early, making breakfast. He hummed quietly to himself, whisking some eggs in a bowl and then turning to the frying pan.

“Gosh that smells good. What’s for breakfast?” Jin stiffened at the voice, turning around slowly, his eyes wide.

Desung had seated himself at the island, staring at Jin, waiting.

“U-um…” Jin stuttered out.

“Oh thank god!” Jin turned this time to Hoseok, who was walking over. “I thought I’d have to give Yejun cereal again! Do you know how chaotic it was yesterday, trying to feed a child and then three more children?” Hoseok complained.

“Who’s calling who a child?” Jungkook muttered, coming into the kitchen as well.

Jin felt a bit safer with them in the room, where he knew Desung wouldn’t make a move. He turned back to the stove and poured the eggs onto a skillet.

He was safe for just a bit longer.

Months passed.

Jin was always on guard, flinching at the smallest sounds, his eyes always darting around the place. He stopped eating as much as he usually did, and he started to become a little more unkempt.

The others all assumed that it was because Taehyung was gone and Jin was going through withdrawal of missing his brother.

If only they knew.

Desung hadn’t made any kind of move, but that only made Jin more paranoid. He was constantly skipping around the man, trying not to be caught alone with him, but even when it did happen, the man didn’t do anything. He never even said anything to Jin, just smiled a stupid, overly bright smile that always sent unpleasant shivers down Jin’s spine.

The man was on guard, and today was no exception.

Yoongi had called him to his office, and Jin was worried, for he hadn’t spoken to the man in awhile.

He knocked, before stepping inside. “Sit.” Yoongi said, looking up from his paperwork when he saw that it was Jin.

They looked at one another for awhile, before Yoongi sighed. “It has come to my attention that I never really properly thanked you for what you did for my son.” Yoongi finally said.

Jin felt like a weight was lifted off of his shoulders at those words. He was worried Yoongi was going to point out the changes in Jin, but of course the man was always gone anyway, so he couldn’t have noticed.

“O-oh. That’s not necessary.” Jin said, shaking his head. “I just did what everyone should do.”

“But not what everyone does. I would like to properly thank you. Perhaps dinner?”

“E-excuse me?”

“Dinner. I’d like to take you out to dinner. Tonight, if you’re free.”

“O-oh…” Jin found himself slowly nodding, confused.

“Excellent. We’ll leave at seven. Formal attire.” Jin nodded and then let his body do the rest of the work, clumsily standing from the chair and bowing to the man before walking out.

He was dazed, not really knowing what just happened.

He had dinner with his boss tonight?

Jin sighed, shaking his head, walking down the hall towards his room.

He guessed it would be nice to get out of the house.
