#9.5 another chance?

Uhm... a sequel from the supposed to be one shot "maybe in another life." Two members of different mafias in love. Lucy had to leave Natsu because her boss found out about them.

-

Lucy's POV

I can't believe this is happening right now. After decades of being at war with each other, our leader finally managed to strike a deal with our enemy. Or at least, she wants to.

For the first time in forever, our mafias are going to meet up and talk. Talk. Just talk. Can you believe it? We've been fighting each other for as long as the mafia has history.

No weapons. No fights. Just a meeting between two of the smartest people I know. And of course some of their trusted people behind them. Not to start a fight, but just to be sure.

I was waiting behind our leader, Mavis, along with three other people. You wouldn't expect it, but this child lookalike is one of the smartest woman you'll ever meet.

My heart began pounding in my ears, goosebumps appearing on my body when I heard tires screeching.

Mavis turned to me, Mira, Jellal and Laxus. "If I see one of you provoking the opposite side, there will be consequences, alright? Our mafias have been at war for too long and I know it's hurting both of our business. We're here to talk," she said in the most serious voice I've heard in a while. We nodded, silently clamping our hands behind our backs.

But I wasn't nervous and fidgety as fuck because the enemy mafia lead by Zeref Dragneel was coming. I was nervous because it would be the first time in a year that I would see his brother.

You see, he and I were truly infuriated with each other, even confessed our love the day before I had to break it off. Mavis found out, and she didn't take it lightly.

Whatever I may be, I will never be unloyal and dishonest to the one person I owed my life to, and that's Mavis. So I broke off my relationship and hardened my sweet little broken heart.

While the need to have him close disappeared over the months, I still feel his touch lingering sometimes. I wonder how he looked. He was Zeref's right hand man, no way that he wouldn't be present.

The door opened and three men and one woman entered. They were dressed in total black.

One with the red hair, Erza Scarlet, an extremely skilled swordswoman. Gray Fullbuster, one of their best fighters and next to him the one who makes me feel alive the most, Natsu Dragneel.

Zeref immediately took a seat, not bothering for greetings, and so the meeting began.

I couldn't take my eyes off of Natsu. He looked the same, but still there was something so different about him. He radiated pure confidence and coldness. His eyes were zeroed on everyone behind Mavis, except for me. He analyzed them all skeptically.

I glanced at his best friend, his eyes not hiding his surprise very well at seeing me. He must have remembered me from the time he saw me on Natsu's bed. He looked at his friend, narrowing his eyes, but eventually he turned his eyes to his leader again.

Natsu hadn't looked at me once in this meeting, and I shouldn't be feeling so letdown after everything that happened. I expected at least a glance, not this indifference.

"That was it all for today. Thank you for cooperating with me," Mavis said, shuffling the papers back into a binder.

"My pleasure," Zeref said with a gentle smile. Although his words portrayed warmth, I still got shivers. There was just something about his face that was so emotionless and cold that made the northpole quiver in shame.

Before I knew it, they already left. My heart still hadn't calmed down and the pounding didn't lessen.

Every emotion is better than indifference.

Fuck. What did I expect? I was the one who broke up.

Nobody's POV

Zeref, Natsu, Gray and Erza were all walking into their own headquarters again. "That Mavis is so gullible," Zeref muttered, almost disappointed. "Why would she expect that we'd go along with her plan about trading business?"

He dumped the papers into the garbage can. "Natsu, a word."

He left before the salmon haired guy could respond.

Gray nudged him for a second. "I can't believe you slept with the enemy," he whispered angrily. "What were you thinking? Don't use your fucking dick to think."

Natsu's heart began pounding after the reminder. He made sure not to look at her the entire time. He wouldn't be able to control himself otherwise.

"I didn't know," he responded coldly.

Gray shook his head and left, not bothering arguing with him. Natsu silently walked down the path to his brother's office.

He knocked three times, making sure to take a deep breath before coming in.

"What did you need me for?" he asked, masking his nervousness. His brother is one extremely smart bastard.

"I want you to immobilize Lucy Heartfilia."

His heart dropped. He must have heard him wrong. He must have... right?

"Lucy Heartfilia?" he asked in an indifferent tone, to hide his surprise and to get his confirmation.

"She's been threatening every dealer of ours the moment we owned the new bar in town."

Although Natsu wasn't one to go against his boss's orders, he did feel some kind of suspicion. "Wouldn't that cause for us to go into another war once again? With the losses we've been dealing lately, I'm not so sure we'd survive," he responded honestly. As his right hand, of course he knew the statistics of their business.

He sipped his glass of whiskey, twirling the glass in his hand while looking at it. "Right, forgotten."

Natsu frowned, his brother is everything but forgetful. He did seem more distant lately though. He refrained himself from asking whether he was okay. That was overstepping a line of sentimentality with his brother.

"Then threaten her right back. Make her stop ruining my business. That is your mission. I want it done before next week." He folded the papers, clearly dismissing me.

He clenched my jaw and left without a word.

If life didn't already suck, faith had to fuck him up even more. His first lover, his first and only heartbreak. And now he had to threaten her? Fine. He can do that.

It became evening quick, and around 10pm Natsu stood outside one of the pubs owned by the White Fairies. When entering nobody took in his presence. Or they did, but didn't dare to take immediate action.

After all, what was the right hand man of the enemy doing here? He sensed all their hatred for him and his people. He took slow steps towards someone lurking in the shadows, the less lightened part of the pub.

His rank gave him safety. Though being completely on the enemy's territory, he was the one feared. It almost made him quirk up his lip.

He ignored them all, walking as if he owned the world. He looked in the eye of the blonde sitting at the end of the pub, out of almost everyone's eyes.

He took a seat, making sure the other side knew he was here for business.

"And what did I do to deserve your presence?" left the blonde's lips, her tone almost offended. Most of her facial expression was indifferent, except for the slight narrow of her eyebrows.

The voice, so nostalgic yet hiding the lovely tone he had come to miss.

"Let's talk somewhere more privately," Natsu said, his voice indifferent to the situation. He gave the bar a glance, noticing how quiet it became.

"Follow me," Lucy said coldly and stood up. Without another look she walked to a room in the back of the pub. He followed her silently, entering what looked like an office.

He closed the door and was immediately slammed to the wall. The ill feeling of a knife was pressed against his neck as his arms were hauled to the back. His cheek was pressed to the wall.

"I don't know what game you're playing, but the audacity you have to even show your face here makes me want to kill you," Lucy whispered angrily in his ear.

"I hoped we could have some polite conversation, but I guess that's out of question now." In one movement Natsu pushed the knife off of his neck and put some distance between them by pushing her back.

He glared at her, not holding back his malice. "I need you to stop threatening our dealers."

"I don't know what you're talking about." She still held the knife tightly, afraid to show any weakness by letting her guard down.

His eyebrow twitched. "Please don't insult me by lying."

Lucy erased all emotions on her face, even managed to force her body to stay calm. "Or else? What if I don't stop ruining your business?"

He took a step closer, grabbing his own dagger swiftly. "Or you'll see why you don't make an enemy out of me."

A shadow fell over her face. "I already did. You came here to threaten me."

"On my boss's command," he muttered harshly, implying he wouldn't be here for any other reason. "You've seen nothing of me. You've never witnessed my cruelty, my wickedness."

"Stop talking to me like I'm below you. I'm your equal," she said and tilted her chin up.

"Are you?" he asked mockingly. He advanced forward, immediately grabbing one wrist. She tried to stab him with the other but he made sure to move around her, making her miss. He grabbed both and tightened her arms behind her back.

She tried kicking him but he saw that coming too. Despite her heart racing, she wasn't afraid. Should she be? Probably.

"Isn't this position ironic? It used to be a good one," he whispered darkly.

"I need you not to hate me," she whispered.

He leaned into her ear. "Shall I take you by force to show you my wickedness?" he asked while pushing her towards the wall. He immediately regretted his words, but taking it back would show her he still wasn't a threat to her.

Lucy squirmed, feeling her stomach drop at the thought. One year ago he would have never made that suggestion in the first place. He could have changed a lot. She began sweating lightly, stopping a whimper from leaving her mouth.

He chuckled humorlessly. "I could almost smell your fear. The fact that you thought I was serious hurts me, love."

"Don't call me that," she snapped.

"I wouldn't need to take someone by force to get what I want," he said, tilting his head. "Now stop coming into Dragneel's territory and leave our dealers alone." He dragged the tip of his dagger along her skin. "I wouldn't want to make your skin look like an artwork."

Lucy suddenly twisted heavily in his grip and sidekicked his body, forcing him to move away from her.

"You're infuriating. You will just keep the past hidden?"

He looked at her emotionlessly. "The past should stay right where it is. I'm just doing my job."

Lucy mimicked him, holding her knife tighter. She wanted to provoke him. Wanted more emotions on his face than he let her see. "Knew your love declaration was a lie. Even I would have never threatened you the way you did."

Natsu's eyebrow twisted. "Watch your mouth," he snapped. "Don't insult my honesty just because you're hurt I moved on."

Lucy's heart clenched. She had hope. "Moved on?" she exclaimed in disbelief. How could he have moved on?

"It was bound to happen. We haven't seen each other in a year. I'd almost forgotten your voice." Everything that came out of his mouth was monotonously. It almost looked like he practiced this exchange. He never talked so boringly.

Lucy bit her lip, trying to get her emotions under control. "I can't believe you."

He grinned darkly. "Didn't think you still had feelings for me."

Lucy shook her head. "Using my feelings against me is such a dick move, but I'm not even surprised anymore."

He shook his head while chuckling. "You've been warned," he said while walking towards the door.

Lucy clenched her hand. "If you step out of that door right now without talking to me about the elephant in the room, I'm ordering everyone to attack you."

Natsu stilled, narrowing his eyes at the exit. He could not take on hundreds of guys with weapons. "Guess I should take you out before leaving then?" he said while turning around, a murderous look on his face.

Lucy sat down on the ground, glaring at him. "Let's talk."

It was silent for a couple of minutes, both trying to stare each other down. He snarled and threw his knife, aiming directly at the wall behind her, making it only scratch her ear.

To her acknowledgment, she didn't flinch one bit, only intensifying her glare. "Sit."

He sighed, deciding he didn't want to do his other tasks either and sat down. Lucy pulled the knife from the wall, looking at the short line of blood staining it.

"It'd be a shame if I got infected. This knife is dirty as hell," she said.

Natsu rolled his eyes. "You've been injured worse. That scratch is not going to kill you."

Lucy tilted her head. "The owner might."

Natsu pulled his mouth into a thin line, not agreeing nor disagreeing. He only shrugged. She threw it to him softly. He caught it without blinking and put it back into his pocket.

"How did Zeref like Mavis's plan?" she asked.

Natsu grimaced. "Threw it in the trash right after coming back to the base."

She sighed. "She made such an effort only for it to be wasted like this. It was a great plan."

He nodded. "Indeed. I would have accepted it. But you're not keeping me here to talk about our bosses."

Lucy shook her head, eyeing him with a sad smile. "I miss you," she confessed. "I just want a piece of mind. How are you?"

"Oh I'm great. Never could have been better," he said sarcastically. He was the victim of Lucy's glare and sighed. "My life's never been so dull. Nothing excites me anymore, not even the thought of torturing my enemies."

While Lucy should have been surprised by his raw honesty, she wasn't. He was never one to openly lie without a good cause.

"You?" Natsu asked with a raised eyebrow, as if his confession was an every day occurrence.

"I had better times with you," she whispered, keeping her voice from cracking. Shit. He still had such an effect on her.

He bit his lip as if deciding between different things. "Come here," he said while opening his arms and patting his lap.

Lucy blinked, feeling astonished. "What?"

Natsu disabled all his weapons and lay them down on the ground. "Come here."

Lucy followed his movements and put her weapons down. She walked slowly to his lap, sighing before sitting down. The feeling of his strong thighs make her almost want to cry. Suddenly his arms wrapped around her in a hug.

"What are you doing?" she whispered, afraid her voice would break.

He rested his head on her shoulders. "Defying the rules and agreements," he said and grabbed her chin with his fingers. He turned her face towards his and leaned forward, capturing her mouth in a kiss.

Lucy gasped, her hand immediately searching for his shoulder to grip on. She melted inwardly. She missed this so much. His lips were the only place on his body which was still soft. Everything else was rough from all the scars.

The kiss became heated, passionate, as if they both needed this to survive.

Lucy hastily broke the kiss, narrowing her eyes. "You said you moved on."

He scoffed. "I lied, obviously."

"So what now?" she asked, looking at her hands. They weren't supposed to act on their feelings anymore. One word to Mavis or Zeref and they'd be gone in an instant.

"I don't know," Natsu whispered softly. "I don't want to be separated from you anymore though."

He grabbed his phone, looking guarded as he received a text message. "Gray's looking for me. He's here," he said, suddenly alarmed but extremely tired of it all.

Before Lucy could even move away Gray stormed inside, having his dagger close to his face. He looked furious as he saw the scene.

"You have got to be kidding me," he sneered, advancing towards Lucy with a murderous look.

Before he could lay a finger on her Natsu pushed Lucy off of him, effectively pulling her behind him while standing up.

"Don't point a dagger at her," Natsu fired back, glaring at him.

"After everything, your oath to your family, your hatred for them, you're choosing her? Seriously?"

"Geez thanks," Lucy mumbled. Gray sneered as she herself grabbed her dagger from the ground.

"Stay out of my business."

Gray scoffed, taking a step back. "Zeref won't like this."

Lucy looked at Natsu with hidden concern. Zeref was his brother. He shouldn't have to choose.

"I hate the mob life. I don't want to live in it anymore," Natsu exclaimed, shocking Lucy. He did say it didn't excite it anymore, but everyone knows the only way to leave is to die.

Gray glared. "Sure. Try to live a normal life and see how exciting that is. You'll never be safe. The police knows your face and the mafia won't stop tracking you down until they've killed you."

Natsu glanced at the woman standing behind her. "I've got a feeling I'd love a normal life with the woman I love on my side."

Lucy blushed, expertly avoiding Natsu's eyes as he looked behind her.

Gray laughed humorless. "Love? Oh god, you're embarrassing. I'm sure you'd be laughing with a knife in your throat." He placed his hand on the gun tucked into his waistband.

Natsu hissed. "Don't you dare threaten me, I'll kill you. Draw out your gun and I'd already have shot a bullet at your heart," he said, his own hand on his gun.

"Can you guys stop it?" Lucy asked, bored but guarded.

"Stay out of this. I bet this was your plan all along. Occupy Natsu's mind, make him betray his family, and once he least expects it, you'd betray him too."

"We haven't seen each other in a year," Lucy exclaimed in disbelief. "Even with all the blood on my hands, I have never dirtied myself with betraying my significant other."

Without another word Gray threw his dagger towards Lucy, her eyes widening.

She ducked but feared she was too late. When she didn't feel something, she lifted her head to see that Natsu caught the dagger for her, his whole hand bleeding at the sharp edges.

"Fuck, Gray," Natsu hissed, throwing the knife behind him, away from Gray.

"Natsu? Are you okay?" Lucy asked worriedly. That looked like a horrible cut.

"Making yourself bleed for her," Gray muttered, shaking his head. He drew out his gun, pointing it at Natsu who was too slow to grab his own.

"I've poisoned the knife with a numbing cream," he said lowly. "Your movements have been slowed. Stop fighting me and leave her alone."

"Never," Natsu said, his voice soft.

Lucy glared and pushed Natsu behind her, spreading out her arms. "Don't kill him," she whispered. Just like Natsu, she was done too with this life. "Kill me and spare him."

Natsu hissed, trying to push her away but his movements had already weakened. "Stop it."

"I can't believe you guys," Gray said. He looked at Lucy with sudden resignation.

He stepped forward, immediately grabbing Lucy's arms tightly in one hand and grabbing her chin. "I'll spare you, alright, but you have to give up Natsu in return."

"What is it with you lowlifes all thinking you can decide what we should do? We've been given our rank because of our fierceness and ruthlessness, I won't let a fucking nobody say what I must do." She freed her arms and smacked him in the face.

He looked stunned, not expecting that but Lucy already turned around to catch Natsu's falling body.

"The antibiotics, please," she bit out, sticking out her hand.

"In your dreams," he scoffed, stuffing his hands in his pocket. She was right, it was none of his business. If his partner in crime didn't want to take his advice, then so be it. They'll certainly meet in the afterlife.

"You're so called numbing cream is a poison made to close one's arteries. His heart and brains won't get the needed oxygen and he will die," she spat. "You wanted to kill me, underestimating Natsu's stubbornness to protect me."

"He came here to threaten you," Gray snarled, digging into his pockets, grabbing the antibiotics.

Lucy caught it without blinking and made Natsu's unconscious ass take it. "And he succeeded," she whispered softly, looking at Natsu's unmoving state. "He almost made me think he was prepared to take me by force."

Gray snorted. "That idiot can't even lay a hand on an innocent woman, let alone the woman he loves. Despite what you may think, we spare the women."

Lucy glared. "How noble of you. How did you get past all the people?"

He shrugged. "Told them I was sent by the boss. Kill me and risk war."

She snorted. "I love that tactic."

For the first time ever Gray gave a half smile in her direction. "Right? It's so easy to install fear."

There was a comfortable silence for a couple of seconds, both surprised at how easy that silence was to achieve. "Are you gonna tell on him?" she asked eventually.

Gray frowned. His first intention was to do it, so why was he hesitating now?

"You can do it, you know? We'll figure out a way."

Gray clenched his hands, his furious state wavering in the haze of empathy. "He's my best friend."

"And you swore loyalty to Zeref," Lucy reminded him with a soft tone. "Don't sacrifice your life for someone you just consider your best friend."

Gray scoffed. "Without him I'd be long dead. He's not just my best friend, he's my motivation to keep on living."

Lucy raised her eyebrow, surprised at his tone of honestly. "How touching."

Gray's eyebrows twitched, and feeling the need to defend himself, he said "He fights me, I fight him. It's our fuel of life."

"Gray, you bastard!" Natsu suddenly exclaimed, waking up from the dead and shocking them both. He punched Gray's chin. "How dare you try to end my life with fucking poison?"

He tried to get in another kick but he blocked it with his hands. "I didn't. I tried to end Lucy's life."

Natsu's glare hardened. "Even worse," he spat out and tackled him. He kept punching his chest repeatedly, but Lucy noticed how his punches weakened every time.

"Does our friendship mean nothing to you? Do you want to stay loyal to my brother so badly even though I was the one who helped you out of the gutter? Just because I want to be with Lucy doesn't mean I'm stabbing your backs and giving away our secrets."

Gray looked away ashamed. Why was he so loyal to Zeref? "I'm sorry," he bit out.

Natsu almost wanted to grin at his apology, but decided against it. He grabbed Lucy's hand. "We'll figure it out."

Lucy looked at their intertwined hands, a small smile forming at the feel of his familiar, calloused hand.

"We will."

Gray gagged. "Disgusting."
