Natsu has been captured by the enemy pack for so long, losing a huge part of his childhood. When he got back they of course celebrated his return and he met Lucy again. With all the insecurities and nightmares it caused him, Lucy is making sure she is there for him, resulting in Natsu courting her.
-
"I can't believe our pack is holding a feast for someone we don't even know," Lucy grumbled, peeling of the skin of a bison.
"Well... it's one of our leader's friend's son," Levy said, making sure the decorations are perfectly fine.
"But Levy, I just don't get it. We're twenty two now and we've never heard of this so called son."
"It's said he was taken as a prisoner of another pack for a very long time. Besides, you don't have room to complain," Levy reminded. "You agreed to do all the tasks while you know you could have split those."
Lucy whistled annoyed, rolling her eyes at her best friend. "You know my parents expect too much of me." And indeed her parents did. She belonged to one of the wealthy families of the pack.
She grabbed the basket with fruit and decided to bring it to the table already. Walking to the pack hall wasn't something she feared. Her pack was huge but loyal and respectful. Even though she is the 'weakest' link of society as people may say, she took pride in it.
Some alphas whistled at her, their eyes approvingly scanning her body. It's no surprise an omega like Lucy had options, many options.
For now she didn't want a mate though. She knew she couldn't provide any comfort for any male right now, her characteristics making her seem harsh sometimes.
She isn't. She just doesn't wear her heart on her sleeve. That's the only thing her uncle had taught her before he died in a battle against another rival pack.
Suddenly her nose caught a strange scent, never smelled it before. Her ears perked up in alarm. They're within the heart of their territory now. How come no one is surprised or anywhere near concerned? Shouldn't some alphas be on patrol or anything?
She looked around, her eyes lighting up when she saw Gray. "Gray!" she called, jogging lightly. "Don't you smell this strange scent of someone? Shouldn't we warn people that maybe an intruder passed the borders?"
He stopped doing whatever he was doing, his eyes lighting up with a sudden realization. "Nothing to worry about."
"What?"
Gray looked at her indescribably. "You know, Natsu, our friend?"
Lucy frowned, looking at the basket with grapes she carried. "I don't know a Natsu..." she said slowly, as if trying to remember if she ever did.
Gray paused for a second before nodding. "Right... anyways, go bring that to the table, will you?"
"Yes, yes, alpha," Lucy mumbled, rolling her eyes. She heard him scoff, his cold scent getting cooler, a good sign. His scent was naturally refreshing. The happier he is feeling, the more his scent would turn icy.
"You should be happy I'm your friend, otherwise I'd have slit your throat open."
"Okay, pup. Whatever you say," Lucy mocked, immediately laughing how his scent turned sour. Men's egos are easy to crush.
She noticed her basket missed some fruit. She furrowed her eyebrows. She knows how to do her job, and she definitely had those before.
She gasped and turned around, the smirk on Gray's face was the first thing she noticed. "You fucking asshole," she said as she saw the cherries in his hand.
"Oops," he said and ate it.
Great, now she had to pick those fruits again. She stomped off to the pack farm. Once there she noticed a rather broad person.
Only omegas visit this place, kinda because it's their duty. It appeared to be a male, but she knew no one in her pack with this vibrant pink hair colour.
"Who are you?" Lucy growler, gripping the basket tighter. The dominant scent around him told her enough. She must say his scent was alluring though. Just enough firewood to make it feel warm, some sniff of cinnamon to keep it sweet. Nothing like how he looked right now.
He's an alpha, and seeing his healthy figure, his muscles, the way his confidence surrounded him like a second shield... it was frightening.
She also knew that without a doubt he could knock her out. She learned how to fight, she was quick and smart, but against a naturally more powerful kind she couldn't win.
Sure she won against some alphas sometime, but those were like rookies.
"Who are you?" he asked in return, a wide smile on his face.
"Confidential," she replied curtly, glancing for any sense of weapon on him. Her stomach curled with fear. There were blades, lots of them.
He had a scar on his cheek and with the torn shirt, she could make up some scars there too. Oh, she would definitely lose. At least she was confident in her ability to scratch him though.
"No need for the attitude, miss," he replied, his eyes shining with amusement.
"I don't know you. I have all the rights to be suspicious."
He scoffed, a small chuckle following. "If I were to be an intruder, shouldn't the guards be chasing my ass right now?"
"What's your point?" Lucy asked, rolling her eyes.
He grunted. "Damn, no fun in you woman. I'm Natsu Dragneel, son of second-in-command, if my father hasn't fucked up yet."
Immediately her eyes widened, not expecting that. It made a whole lots of sense though, why nobody cared about the strange smell. Why his clothes looked so old. Why his body looked so... powerful, because he had to endure years of torture probably. Oh gosh, she was being a bitch to someone who could have her dead in a second. If people found out she was behaving this way to Igneel's son, she would be called disrespectful.
"H-how..." She swallowed before lowering her head, swallowing her pride. She hated the hierarchy so much, but there wasn't much she could do. "Please forgive me."
He didn't immediately respond, almost making Lucy explode with nervousness.
Then an ecstatic laugh filled the air. It had her look up. Natsu was laughing loudly, his full blown smile so pure it made her wonder about the things he had to go through.
"The way your attitude changed so quickly is kinda saddening, but oh so funny because I missed most of my teenager's years here. It's good to see you, Luce."
She snapped her eyes to his so quickly she could have been a vampire. Luce?
The confusion in her eyes made his soften. He took a step forward, carefully not to scare her of being an imposter.
"You may not remember me, but we were friends when we were younger. Like really small. Age of five I would guess."
It seemed logical. She didn't remember who she hung out with in the past, unless they're still by her side.
"Then why did you ask who I was?" she countered.
"For laughs," he said, shrugging. He spread out his arms. "Can I have a welcome home hug?"
"Why?" She eyed him, putting all the information she got in order. The son fits Igneel's appearance at least.
"Because I was imprisoned as a teen and lost all of my everything the moment I got caught. You're the second person I have a conversation with after escaping." His smile faltered, noticing the hesitation in her steps. "I just need to feel someone close right now... please."
Lucy felt horrible after seeing his sad face. She told herself it was only to be cautious. "Why me? You're back, you could go straight to your parents and they would hug you so tightly because they missed you."
"I found Gray on my escape mission. He immediately recognized me and we travelled back to the pack. He was gonna go tell everyone so we could celebrate. He told me to keep myself hidden so the surprise would be too good to be true." He had a small smile on his face, thinking about how Gray didn't even need confirmation. He immediately knew who he was, even after all those years.
"Wouldn't they smell you?" Lucy asked timidly, putting her basket down. She knew he eyed her, so she smiled lightly.
"Do you smell me now?"
Lucy sniffed the air, her eyebrows raising up in surprise. That's weird. "I swear I smelled you the moment I got here."
"Being imprisoned did get me to make some friends with other captured peers. They taught me a lot, for example how to suppress your smell."
"That's so cool," Lucy said.
He nodded, kinda disappointed at her reaction.
Lucy walked over and embraced him tightly, her arms swinging about his neck. Natsu, although surprised at the sudden hug he received, returned it after a second. "I don't know you, but I'm glad you survived," she whispered in his ear.
He bit his lip, almost to stop the tears from breaking loose. It was definitely something he needed to hear. "Thank you." He paused before adding, "And you smell amazing."
Then Natsu released his scent again, and it swarmed around Lucy like a blanket.
"So do you," she remarked, trying to sound sarcastic while actually not being sarcastic.
"Now that's just rude. I'm an alpha, you should respect me," Natsu muttered.
"Nah. You have my respect until you do something that makes me lose faith in you," she replied easily, used to the countless alphas thinking they're superior.
Weird enough, she didn't mind Natsu joking about it. Her wolf even felt good.
"I have to go now," she said quickly, noticing the setting of the sun.
"Will I see you at the feast?" Natsu asked, putting his hands in his pants.
"For sure," she said smoothly, a grin growing on her face. "You cannot miss me."
He smiled and bowed slightly. Lucy's eyes widened as she stepped back. No alpha has ever bowed to her, even if it was for a second or two. She stared at him in awe as he returned to his normal posture.
"That's a first," she said, the admiration unmissable in her voice.
Natsu smelled the air again, his ears peeking up satisfyingly when her scent turned sweeter. "If there's something I've learned, it's that my friends and me are equal," he told her, a breathtaking smile on his face.
"We're equal?" she asked again, needing the confirmation. They weren't mated and yet he thought of her as an equal.
Not many alphas do.
"Yeah. We're friends."
Het heart swelled up with how he said every friend of his is equal to him, despite their rank. Guess it is true what people say. The hard times you go through build character.
"Well, I'll see you in an hour," Lucy said and smiled.
Once she was done doing her tasks, Lucy went to Levy. "Hey Levy. Want to go on a walk?"
"Yess, let's— why are you smelling like an alpha?" Levy asked, confused.
She widened her eyes. "I do?"
She nodded, stepping closer to sniff her. "Whose is it from? I don't recognize it."
Lucy bit her lip, a smile barely being hidden. "You'll see."
Levy wiggled her eyebrows, giggles erupting from her a second later. "Okay okay. Please take a shower though."
"Yes mother," she said, grinning. She grabbed her clothes and smelled it. Natsu's scent was as present as ever.
One hour later they found themselves at the feast. "Can I have a moment?" the pack leader, Makarov, said. He's an old guy with a heart of gold. He got wiser as time passed, but so did his body grow weaker. It's only a matter of time before his heart can't take it anymore.
"Igneel, go ahead."
And Lucy swore she never saw a smile this big on the old man's face. He's Makarov's right hand. He was one of the best fighters of the pack, earning everyone's respect through the many battles he won. Seeing such a huge smile on his face made Lucy happy.
"I'm gonna keep it short. Don't want to bore people on a feast, right? First I'd like to thank Gray for recognizing my son and bringing him home. Once upon a time he was one of ours before we lost him. Let's give him a warm welcome."
Everyone cheered. Lucy frowned, this is the moment where Natsu would appear and everyone would embrace him. Igneel also looked around. "Now, now, now. Where the hell is he?"
The table erupted in laughters, the ambience getting light. "I'm serious," Igneel said, a laugh also coming out of his mouth.
"I'm here, I'm here!" They all heard suddenly, their faces immediately following the sound.
Gray who was sitting next to Lucy laughed, rolling his eyes. "Of course he would be late to his own ceremony."
Although it looked like Natsu ran a whole mile to get to here, he didn't seem to be out of breath. Many elders smiled, remembering the little salmon haired guy running around town in the past.
His parents got teary. Natsu jumped up to them without a second doubt, embracing his parents tightly. "Mum, dad... I missed you," he said.
"We're glad you're back," his mother said, tightening the embrace. Igneel pulled off for a second. "Well, well, well, look who has growned so much."
Natsu beamed at him. "I had to."
And then everyone began cheering. Some music was being played and the feast really began.
After everyone ate they want to the room where they can dance if they want or just make conversations with people.
Levy smirked when approaching Lucy. "So you just got something going on with mister hot guy, huh?"
"Who?"
"Natsu. You smelled like him."
Lucy grinned. "I met him at the graveyard."
"Cute. Oh look, here he comes," Levy whispered. Lucy facepalmed, but before she could say something, Natsu was first.
"Although I'm quite flattered y'all are talking about me, may I ask why?" Lucy groaned and turned around, seeing Natsu with a drink in his hand. He was looking at Levy, a smirk on his face.
"Forgot alphas can hear ten times better than normal," she muttered, annoyance rolling off of her.
"I'm Natsu," he said and bowed his head slightly, taking them both by surprise. Even though Lucy already saw him bowing once, she didn't know he also bowed as a greeting. And suddenly she got curious. What has he learned all those years?
"I'm Levy. Please don't bow, it makes me feel superior when I'm not," she said, red coloring her cheeks.
Just to mock her Natsu bowed again.
Lucy slapped his back. "Don't be so annoying."
"I'm showing her that the hierarchy sucks and nobody should be more superior than the other," he said, smiling.
"What about the pack leader?" Levy asked.
"That's different. He's not more superior than us. He definitely deserves more respect though."
Lucy tilted her head. "That's... cute for an alpha to think like that."
Natsu's jaw dropped to the ground. "Ouch," he said playfully.
"I'll see you around?" Natsu said after a moment of comfortable silence.
"For sure," she said again before a gentle smile took over. "Welcome back."
He grinned before leaving, searching for some of his friends she guesses.
Levy whistled, loving the way Lucy's cheeks tinted pink. "You're cute," she said, laughing.
"Shut up," she said and rolled her eyes. She grabbed her friend's arms and dragged her to the middle. "Let's dance," she said.
Days went by quickly, Natsu adapting into the pack's easily. He belonged here, that much was clear.
Natsu and Lucy had some encounters already, but not much. Lucy was by the lake, just sitting there, enjoying life so far she could. Her brother became sick, not severely sick but still enough to be worried.
Suddenly she heard a bright laugh. She turned her head, seeing Natsu walking into his house. It was kind of weird for her to see him live alone.
Natsu waved at some friends he made, his laugh so wide it covers half of his face. Lucy frowned. That laugh looks to good to be true, especially considering his past.
The moment he asked her to hug him, his vulnerability showed. Just for a moment. He quickly masked it again when being with other people.
Without a second of hesitation she went to his house, opening the door quietly. Maybe she should have asked for permission, but she grew worried, convincing herself she's just being a good friend by checking up on him.
"Hey, you okay?" Lucy asked, seeing him in the kitchen.
Natsu's eyebrows rose, not expecting company. "I'm fine. Why wouldn't I be? Don't scare me like that though." He had some vegetables out and a pan and uncooked meat. "Want some?"
She shook her head, sitting on a chair around the table. "I've already eaten but thanks." She looked around. The house looked uncomfortable, dark.
Natsu nodded, his cheery mood from just a second ago disappearing as he looked at his stove. Lucy kept her eyes on him as he began cooking some meat. His posture looked tense as if he was hiding something.
"You're nerving me, woman," Natsu snarled, trying to sound playful but his shaky voice betrayed him.
"I'm serious. We're friends, aren't we?" Lucy asked, leaning on her palm. "You've endured years of torture. I can't expect you to be perfectly fine just after a week." It was really too good to be true.
After a moment of silence, where Natsu really looked like he was contemplating telling her.
"I can't show vulnerability." Natsu gripped his knife tightly while cutting vegetables. "I don't want to show vulnerability."
Lucy bit her lip, looking at Natsu with concern. "Didn't you say you hated the hierarchy? Showing vulnerability is not a sign of weakness."
Natsu sucked in a deep breath, only showing his back to her. "A h-hug," he said, sounding as if he was shivering.
Immediately Lucy left her chair and walked over to him. She hugged his back, watching how his hands were clenched tightly. "I'm not going to advertise shit. You can trust me."
He let out a shaky chuckle. "Trusting is a big word, you know?"
"What happened?"
"People who I thought were my comrades betrayed me." He chuckled humorlessly. "Fucking weaklings. You would think that the same imprisoned people would work together for freedom. Nope. Every single time we made an escape plan, there was someone who would tell them. Only to get a slightly better treatment from them."
Lucy blinked slowly. It made sense. Survival of the fittest. An individual trying to get out of it alive. Was is worth betraying your fellows? Probably not. But nobody is your friend when imprisoned. That was rule number one she learned if she ever got taken away.
She wanted to open her mouth, but he was first. "And I know that was stupid to think, okay. I know. I'm an alpha, I had to learn some basic reasonings if I ever got caught. But still, they taught me a lot of things only to betray the most of us. It sucks, okay. You can't trust everyone, but sometimes trusting people is the only way to survive."
His eyes began to water. "My body is worn out. I'm drained of energy."
Lucy put out the small fire and turned Natsu around to face her. She grabbed his hands tightly. "Look at me. You're so strong to even be standing here right now. And I know I can't just better everything with my words, but I'm here for you. We all are. This pack is one of the best to be born in. You're standing tall right now. Look at you. You've endured years of malice and you're still alive and breathing. The scars on your body are healing. You've overcome the physical shit, now we got to work on your feelings, don't we? And it's gonna be hard, you're probably going to feel shitty every day. But it's gonna get better. And I figured you got trust issues, but you can trust me. if I ever break that trust, you can do what you want with me—"
"That makes me sound bad as if I'd punish you," he interrupted, not going in on the other words because he knew he would break down if he did. Gray said something similar, and the tears didn't stop for a while when that happened.
Lucy laughed. "I know. I meant that you can stop our friendship. You can give me the fucking silent treatment if you want. Anything."
Natsu smiled. It wasn't that bright smile as before, but it was enough. "I'll keep you to that."
"Let's go for a run?" Lucy asked, grinning.
Natsu's smile faded slightly. He hadn't run for sometime now. He wanted his wounds to heal properly.
Lucy immediately noticed his hesitation. "Oh damn. Sorry, I forgot about your wounds. Next time!"
Natsu immediately began to protest. He really wanted to go running, slightly liking the burning of his wounds. Not that he is a masochist, but it does feel good. "Bu—"
"No," Lucy instantly interrupted, a warning growl leaving her lips.
Natsu raised his eyebrow in a challenge. He knew she meant well, he just wants to test the waters. "And why should I listen to you?" He gritted his teeth, trying to act intimidating.
Lucy scoffed. "Don't be such a child. Healing takes time, noob."
"Who are you calling a noob?" he fired back, standing straight to show her his height. He was slightly taller, but definitely more masculine.
Lucy raised her eyebrow indignantly. A sly smirk grew on her face. "The one who got caught in the first place."
Natsu's eyes widened. Out of all the comebacks he prepared himself for, this one was the one he didn't even expect. The glint in Lucy's eyes was cute. She was clearly proud of the comeback. And he didn't even feel hurt of any kind.
He felt relieved. Jokes. Yes. His coping mechanism. One that truly worked for him.
He growled as response though, not letting her see it was a snark remark. "I was asleep, it was within our borders and I was a child, so excuse me for being naive."
"So you admit?"
"No," he said with his mouth in a tight line.
Lucy slapped him softly on the shoulder, a wide smile on his face.
Suddenly the door opened once again, Natsu's parents stepping through the door. Igneel's eyebrows rose in surprise, seeing Lucy there.
Lucy bowed quickly, not expecting Natsu to have any visitors.
"Lucy," the mother said, frowning. "What are you doing here, dear?"
Lucy smiled awkwardly. "I was just—"
"She's my friend. She can come over any time," Natsu interrupted, sending his mother a smile.
His mother's eyes lit up. "Ah yes, of course. We're just passing by. How are you, Natsu?"
"I'm gonna be okay," he said instead of the usual answer he gave them.
It got the right effect. Their eyes softened incredibly, looking fondly at him. She patted his cheek. "If you ever need some kind of help, you are always welcome."
His father looked kinda sweaty, suspicious. Natsu's gaze turned sharp. "Why are you acting so suspicious?"
"We need to tell you something."
Lucy's eyes widened, totally forgetting that there was something Natsu doesn't know.
"You have a sister."
Completely silence.
Natsu blinked one time, and then a second time.
"A s-sister?" he asked, swallowing loudly. "When? Where is she? How old is she?"
"She's with Romeo, Macao's son. You know, the one with dark blue hair," his father answered, grinning nervously.
Immediately his eyes turned to slits. "Does she even know she has a brother?"
"Well, yes, but—"
"Then why the hell wasn't she at my welcome home ceremony?" he asked, raising his voice lightly. He's been home for a week and has heard absolutely nothing about a little sister.
Lucy put her lip in a thin line. She placed a hand on his shoulder, trying to calm his upcoming anger. "Chill, Natsu."
He clenched his fist, eyes turning to slits. "I know I wasn't there since the beginning, but what the hell. Obviously everything changed."
"She's not waking up, Natsu," his mother interrupted, her voice turning bitter. "She got attacked by a rogue wolf two weeks ago."
Natsu's eyes widened remorsefully. "How old is she?"
"Her name's Wendy. She's twelve."
Natsu grabbed his hair, the tears jumping in his eyes. "I missed twelve whole years." He breathed loudly as he walked towards the door. "I need to run."
"Natsu no," Lucy said, warning him.
"Please let me run," he said, his voice cracking.
What he didn't expect was his mother to grab his arm harshly and pulling him into a hug. "Take a deep breath and close your eyes," she whispered.
She slowly sang what sounded like a lullaby. Lucy could smell his scent getting milder.
"Thank you," he said softly. Lucy smiled as she quietly left, feeling it was not somewhere she could be.
Since that moment they hang out daily. To Lucy just visiting by and Natsu recovering to them going hunting together. He visited his sister, crying tears when she woke up. He explained everything to her and they spent time together, trying to get to know each other as siblings.
One day Lucy opened her door and saw flowers beautiful placed in a basket on the ground. She picked it up. "And what would this be?"
She saw no note or anything attached. "Hey Lucy!" someone called out.
She turned to the left and saw Wendy sprinting towards her. She grinned. "Hai."
Wendy smelled the flowers, as if breathing fresh air again. "They smell nice. From whom is it?"
Lucy shrugged. "I don't know. Didn't have a card attached to it either."
The little one twirled in her dress, grinning. "Today's a celebration of the beginning of spring. You gonna come?"
Lucy fake wiped a tear away. "I'm the one organizing stuff. I have to."
"Good," she said and the sprinted off. Lucy watched her figure get smaller and decided to put the flowers in a vase.
"Lucyyy," Levy called, coming in as if it's her house. "Let's go for a run?"
"Yeah. Sweet," she said. Moments later they were running in their wolf forms.
Suddenly Lucy's wolf and someone else's crashed against each other. Lucy immediately jumped back and scowled, locking with the other's eyes.
She immediately smelled Natsu's scent, recognizing the features too.
The other wolf grinned, showing his sharp teeth as a threat and then left.
Lucy and Levy looked at each other.
"That was weird," Levy said once they transformed back.
"Very," Lucy agreed. He was cute though.
An hour or two later...
"Yah brats. It's officially spring now," Makaraov yelled loudly, holding up his cup with booze.
That was the only thing needed before everyone began to party.
Lucy smelled someone approaching here, but because of the many people she couldn't make out who it was.
She had the urge to turn around, but decided she would surprise herself.
"Hey, Luce," Natsu said.
She turned around, a wide smile on her face. "Can't resist me, huh?"
He chuckled, a drink in his hand. "Couldn't ever."
Her breath hitched at his response. That was so seductive for no reason.
"Your wolf looked incredibly beautiful today," Natsu said, a laugh in his eyes. He snickered when Lucy's eyes narrowed.
"Of course you had to bump into me."
He nodded but held up his hands. "I swear I didn't bump into you on purpose. I was hunting."
Lucy scoffed. "Bitch. Just looked at me and fled."
"I did not flee," Natsu countered rolling his eyes playfully. His pride wouldn't let her get away with insulting him. "I could have won in a second."
Lucy pushed him softly. "Rude."
Then they both laughed, enjoying the nice atmosphere they've created.
"I'm courting you," he suddenly blurt out. "Those flowers and basket were mine."
"That's why Wendy was so secretive," she said, her cheeks reddening. Natsu? Courting her?
"Why," she said eventually, looking at her drink.
Natsu grabbed her chin and tugged on it, wanting her to look at him. When she did, she couldn't control the small gasp that left her lips.
He looked at her as if she was his whole world.
He smiled beautifully, every ounce in his body doing backflips. He would man up and get his shit together for once.
With all honesty he could muster, he caressed her cheek.
"Because you, Luce, absolutely deserve it."
