Forever And Always - Finale

i was reading some of my old one shots and stumbled upon this one. it's pretty old so you should probably read it again to remember lol (it's in this book)

i feel like there's just more to the story

——————————————————————

As days went by, almost everything in the guild went back to normal. Natsu remembered them, after all. All of them, except for one.

Blonde sat at the bar, slurping down her drink while Mira stood by. She glanced at Lucy with sympathy as she felt bad for the unfortunate turn of events.

"I really think you should talk to him.." she spoke, quietly enough so the dragon slayer couldn't hear them.

"There's no point.. he won't remember. I learned that spell for emergencies and I knew the cost after casting it.." she sighed as her gaze lowered.

"Am I sad that my own fiancé can't and probably never will remember me? Yes. But can I do anything about it? Probably not." She continued.

"Then start your story again. Start from the beginning and work your way to the point where you two have been until few days ago. You can't just give up!" White haired mage accidentally yelled out. Her frustration showed in her voice.

Dragon slayer's head turned in their direction and he began walking towards them. As he reached the two, blonde didn't move her gaze from the glass she was holding.

It hurt to look at him. She couldn't, not yet.

"Hey.. um, I haven't introduced myself properly the other day. My name's Natsu." He said as he extended his arm for her to shake. In a weird way, it felt almost unnatural for him to introduce himself, it was as if he already knew her. But that couldn't be, this was his only second or third time seeing her.

Lucy hesitantly shook his hand.

"I'm Lucy.. Nice to m-meet you.." she said as she bit her lower lip to hold back the sob that badly wanted to escape.

"Sorry! I didn't mean to scare you!" He apologized for, what he thought, was an intimidating gesture.

"No, no.. it's not that. Don't worry, I'm not scared of you." She laughed slightly.

"Thank you for being in the infirmary when I woke up, I don't really know why but that helped me." He nervously scratched the back of his head as he let his mouth run loose.

Blonde smiled kindly when the boy felt his heart skip a beat. He grinned at them before going back to fight Gray.

Lucy let out a big sigh as soon as he left.

"See? That went well. Just ask him to go on a job with you or something and you guys will be as before in no time." Mira suggested. Lucy grit her teeth at her words. She slammed her hands on the bar as she glared.

"Enough, Mira. Just.. leave me alone." She warned and walked outside the guild to go back home.

How can she be so optimistic?

I wish things were that easy! It's just not as simple as that.

Blonde walked slowly while holding and slightly rubbing  her palms on her upper arms. It was a bit chilly today.

"Luigi! Wait up!" Someone shouted from behind her. She quickly turned around to spot Natsu.

"It's.. Lucy, actually.." she corrected him.

"Right, sorry.."

"Anyway, I saw you walking outside in a bad mood so I just wanted to see if everything was alright.." he spoke softly.

You're so thoughtful... That's one of the reasons I fell in love with you..

"Yeah.. I'm fine. I didn't mean to make a fuss, I got a bit angry but it's nothing. I'll just go home and calm down.." she explained. The boy nodded his head as he noticed something.

"You're freezing. Here." He said as he took of his west and wrapped it around Lucy, ignoring her oppositions.

"You can give it back when we reach your house." He chuckled nervously as she nodded and gave him another smile. She smelled the scent of his coat as they walked and it just made her feel worse. Just knowing that she will never be able to hug him or kiss him to feel that sweet smell again.

"That's a nice ring you got there.. may I ask who's the lucky guy?"

"It's uh... you don't know him. He's from another guild." She lied.

"Oh.. I get it. Well I wish you happiness!" He smiled, even though he felt the strings around his heart tighten when she said that.

"So.. we're here." Lucy announced as she took of the coat he gave her and handed it back.

"Lucy.. I'll see you in the guild tomorrow?" He asked while turning around before leaving.

"Yeah.." she said and slowly closed the door of her apartment.

- a week later -

"Hey, Mira!" Blonde greeted as she ran up to the bar.

"Good morning, Lucy! Did you sleep well?" She responded with a smile as she turned her attention to the celestial mage.

"Yeah, for the first time in a while actually.." she took a seat across from the white haired girl.

"Um.. did you see Natsu by any chance?" Blonde muttered.

"Uh.. yeah. Him, Gray and Erza took a job few hours ago." She said. Lucy let out a sigh and quickly turned into a fake smile.

"Thanks.. I got this job from the board. I kinda wanted to ask Natsu to come with me but.. I guess that won't be happening." She turned the job in while speaking.

"I'm sorry, Lucy.."

"It's okay! I'll just go by myself." She grinned before taking off.

As blonde walked her way through the meadow she seemed lost in thought. She noticed how she could have easily take a train, but I guess she got so used to walking because of Natsu's motion sickness that it didn't occur to her.

"Uh.. it's so weird going on a job without him.." she let out a sigh. The grip she held around the strap of her bag tightened.

After a while she came to her destination. The job she chose wasn't hard nor complicated. It was just a simple task to help an old man around his garden. She hoped that Natsu and her could bond while doing some gardening.

Blonde checked the address on the paper before knocking to make sure she was at the right place. She lightly tapped on the wood with her knuckles.

An old man cracked the door open and greeted the young mage.

"Thank you for coming. You know, since my wife died it's kinda hard to manage all this work." He chit chatted.

"I'm so sorry for your loss.. it's really nice here." Blonde commented as she looked around. The bonsai trees lined the perfect lawn in their wooden boxes. In the centre there was a pond as large as a small lake with flowering lily pads and a wooden bridge that crossed the middle so you could look down at the koi carp. The flower beds were a riot of May colour and even on close inspection they were weed-free.

"My wife used to take care of all of this while I went to work. Everyday after work I would find her watering the vegetables and her roses. They were her favorite. After her death it was too painful to come here, everything almost died but I just couldn't let that happen. In a way, while I'm here and taking care of all this.. it feels like I'm with her again." The man explained as he dug around.

"It seems you really loved her.. My fiancé.. well, my ex-fiancé used to help me water the plants on my windows, he would also help me cook and clean." Blonde smiled sadly to continue the conversation.

"How come he's your ex?" The man asked.

"Well.. he lost his memories. We were on a job about a month and a half ago. Everything was fine until a creature snuck up on us and hit him. He was sent flying and injured his head pretty badly. His pulse was growing weaker so I casted a spell that erased his memories of me.." she spoke with, what felt like a lump in her throat.

"You mean the spell Oblivioti?"

"Yes! How did you know?" Blonde lifted her head with ounce of hope that this man could help her somehow.

"I've heard of it many, many years ago. Come with me for a second." He moved his arms to sign her to follow him.

The man searched through the multiple shelves full of old books and in a few moments, found the one he's been looking for.

"Here it is!" He announced as he sat beside the blonde on the couch.

"Oblivioti. The spell known to erase the memory of a caster to the person casted upon in hope to heal severe injuries." The man read, his finger moving in tempo of his reading.

As he came to the end of the page his look saddened.

"I'm sorry, I thought, maybe, there was some kind of a cure. A true loves kiss or something similar.." he muttered.

"Don't be.. I already knew that. But I know this isn't a fairytale.. there's no simple solution." Lucy smiled as she got up.

"I think we're all done in the garden, so I'll be on my way."

"Wait! I haven't paid you yet."

"There's no need. I took this job to take my mind off of things. I had a really nice time here, listening you talk about your wife and everything. That's a payment by itself.. so, thank you!" Blonde smiled genuinely at the man before waving her hand and exiting through the door.

As she walked she noticed the sun was setting. The sky was the beautiful mix of orange and pink. The whole walk to the train station she stared at it. And for the ride she admired the stars.

She figured she didn't have to go to the guild today since it was already dark. So the blonde headed home when the train arrived.

When her apartment was in sight, Lucy noticed someone sitting on the stairs to the entrance.

"Natsu..? What are you doing here?" She asked.

"After Erza, Gray and me came back from the job Mira asked me if I could come here and check if you came back. She was worried since you took a small job." He explained.

"Oh.. yeah, the man was really kind and we kinda got into talking. I guess I lost the track of time." She chuckled lightly.

"Well.. since you're safe, I can go back home."

"Wait.. do you want to come inside for a drink or I can make you quick dinner? As a thank you for checking up on me." Blonde suggested.

"I can't refuse food!" He cheered and came inside.

-

"No way!" The boy spoke before cracking into laughter.

They have been messing around for almost an hour, even if it seemed to them like ten minutes. They didn't have that awkward first stage. It was like nothing ever happened, like the old times.

It all felt familiar, but he couldn't put his finger on it. All of this: her company, her laugh, her jokes, her. It was all so natural.

"I know we've known each other for only a week or so but.. I can't shake the feeling that I've met you before." He announced suddenly.

"Uh.. I don't.. know what you're talking about.." she whispered. His words caught her off guard.

"Please.. If you know something that I don't, tell me.. I just feel I lost something. I don't know what it is but I can tell something's missing. Something important.."

"Natsu.. I'm sorry, but.. I don't know." Lucy spoke determinately.

- time skip (2 years)  -

"Come on, Luce!! We're gonna be late!" Dragon slayer yelled out.

"I'm coming!" Blonde wizard shouted back. She waved Mira goodbye before exiting the guild with Natsu.

"Where are we going?!" Lucy asked while running. The boy turned around to look at her and smiled.

"Just follow me!" She announced and continued running.

As they came closer to the destination blonde noticed they were headed to the park. When they came to the clearing, Natsu stopped. Blonde laughed at his sudden movement and glanced at him.

The sun cast its golden rays down upon the clouds of billowing smoke, turning them bright red; fire red.

"Lucy.. I love you. I have loved you since the moment I landed my eyes on you in the guild. I know this might be sudden but would you give me the honor of becoming my wife?" He asked with hope in his eyes.

Blondes eyes watered. Her chest filled with happiness, and her heart was pounding. She never could've imagined he could fall in love with her twice. But, then again, she did too.

"Yes..!" She sobbed as her hands covered her mouth. Natsu stood up and placed the ring on her finger before wrapping his hands tightly around her waist.

"I love you..." she whispered as she tightened her grip around him.

Even though, Natsu never restored his old memories.. he didn't really have to. Because love found a way, like it always does.
