Celestia's Tale of The Four Year Eclipse Part 1: An Eternal War

I'm going to tell you a story. It's about my mother Nala, and the struggles she faced trying to overcome our world's darkest years. It all started a very, very long time ago, long before I was born. Our world was made by a group of great spirits. These spirits stayed up in their own world but each one was responsible for creating and maintaining a part of ours. My mother Nala is the light spirit, but not just the kind of light that makes a room brighter. She has the appearance of a small fox with sapphire eyes, angelic wings that adorned her back, and a coat as white as snow. The fair around her neck was dense and soft, protecting not only her throat but her voice. A soft yet almost regal tone that soothed the hearts of millions. To the creatures of our world, Nala's existence embodies and represents kindness, happiness, empathy, and purity of heart. She was a very bold spirit in her early years, treasured by all, mortal and spirit. That's why.. my mother gave up everything she ever had just to keep our world safe.

You see, spirits are allowed to visit our world for a short time but Nala and a few others decided to leave their home and live in our world. However, this meant that they could never return to the realm of spirits.... ever. Nala was not fazed by this though. She loved our world dearly and dedicated her life to defending it, using her powers to protect those in need, and vowing to never harm a living creature... Well at least not physically. For centuries there was peace in our lands and all was good, but those days ended when she met.... him.

His name was Rau. Like Nala he was a spirit fox of great power. Although, unlike Nala he embodied all which was considered evil in the world. Darkness, hatred, anger, envy, and fear. His red eyes were burning in their gaze, long black claws decorated his feet, and his hide was shrouded in pitch-black fur that gathered in tuffs above the back of his elbows and knees. His voice was low with a subtle rasp. Intimidating to some yet lacking in power or volume. Rau was envious of Nala. Her renown power dominated over his own, and yet the way she wasted her strength on helping mortals, undermining her own statue through humility and grace embittered him to no end.

One day, he managed to track her down and challenged Nala to a fight. The victor of which would lay claim over the land for years to come. In her own eyes she held no claim. All of which existed lived within a delicate balance, but intrigued by his arrogance Nala accepted. The battle was short lived and Nala triumphed easily. However, Rau was a rather stubborn spirit. Twenty years later he returned to challenge her again and once more he suffered a humiliating defeat.

Centuries passed and this cycle remained unbroken for over a millennia. It became almost tradition. None of the other great spirits dare involve themselves. It was not their way to intervene in personal matters, even given the stakes should Nala lose. Rau's continued losses frustrated him. He would sit alone in his cavern and contemplated his next strategy. "If only I could be rid of that annoying pest... Then I could eclipse this world in darkness and none shall stand against me!" He paused for a moment, reviewing his words in his mind, then continued while smirking. "Eclipse..... now this could be interesting.." Time continued on. As the day drew near, Nala prepared herself for the upcoming battle with Rau. Unfortunately her constant exposure to the cruelties of this world and the endless cycle had taken a great toll on her mentally. The bright, happy, and open girl that everyone thought they knew had became more secluded and reserved, emotionally distancing herself from all. A complete and utter deadpan.

When the day had come Nala opened a portal into a small rift. A pocket dimension created to contain their battles. It was her way to prevent harm to any outsiders as well as collateral damage to the landscape below. Rau was already present. Nala moved to the center and sat down, signaling that she was ready to begin. She waited for her opponent to make the first move, but there was something peculiar about Rau this time. He almost always began with a "surprise attack." Diving headfirst into the shadows only to reappear in a random spot before lunging his entire body at her. This time however, he did not. He circled her slowly, and the cocky over-exaggerated grin he usually wore was replaced by a calm, almost smug, smirk. He seemed.. very sure of himself, and not in the overly confident way. Nala was perplexed but her expression remained unfazed. She refused to show any signs of weakness to him, emotional or otherwise. Eventually, after several minutes had passed, she caved and inquired why he was looking at her that way. He chuckled, then responded, "Me...? Oh nothing.. I just figured our current situation would be better off with some moonlight."
