Chapter 14
I was loaded into a trailer again. It was a bigger trailer than the one Dan had, because I still fit in with the other horses. There was an older Arabian mare about 19 years old and a 6-year-old Barbary gelding. They were both very friendly to me and I liked them straight away. The Arabian mare, Dalia, seemed a bit calmer even though she had a lot of fire and the Berber, Domino, seemed very spirited and liked to run. He didn't like to stand in boxes without being allowed out in a paddock for at least six hours a day.
The drive was very short and we arrived at a small open stable with a shelter big enough for the three of us and a pasture. It was not as big as the one at the Haflinger farm, but it was long and wide enough for us to sprint a few laps.
The woman led us out of the trailer one by one and took us through the paddock gate to our new home. I ran everything over first: the grass was a bit damp and the ground a bit muddy. The stable was made of dark brown wood. It looked very cosy because the floor of the stable was very thickly covered with straw. There were two hooks on the wall from which two blue buckets filled with water were hung. In one corner was a pile of hay and above that were containers with some concentrated feed.
After three days of just standing in the box, I trotted a few rounds in the pasture and hit a few hooks. Domino ran happily behind me and we played for a while. Dalia grazed at a short distance from us and we tried not to run her down. She ran with us for a round, but then stopped again. Domino galloped the whole way along the fence and then stopped just before he hit the fence. We ran towards Dalia and just missed her. She was supposed to play along, but unfortunately she would not let us persuade her.
Later, when we were out of breath, we stood next to Dalia and we cuddled and grazed together. We got along well and that made me happy, because it could have been very different. It was great that there were such nice people, but I didn't want to meet someone like Dan again. If it hadn't been for that woman, I probably wouldn't have been there now. That's when I remembered Percy. It was sad that he couldn't come too. But maybe there was another person who would save him?
