Chapter 15

Naina's POV:

Breathing in and out continuously, I focused on calming my aunt down. She was wheezing with pain, controlling her spirit animal as she triggered it as well. She never mentioned it, but her spirit animal was a wolf. A dire wolf. Ammie always bragged about it, as she was lucky to glimpse it when they were at war.

"How can you be so careless?" It disturbed my thoughts when my aunt's blazing voice entered my ears. Holding the glass of water that I brought for her, I stared curiously at Ammie as it seemed to me as if being in love was a crime.

"It just happened, mom! Just the way it happened between you and dad!" Ammie restlessly marched from one corner to the other, throwing her hands in the air with frustration. Poor David looked at her with so much sadness, as if he knew what they were even talking about. I was the only person who knew nothing.

"Can anyone tell me what's exactly going on?" I asked, but was met with silence.

"I also am part of your life. I need to know." I urged Ammie to place my hands on hers, but she threw it away.

"Showing your anger at Naina wouldn't solve the situation. You risked his life!" My aunt shouted at her, making me flinch.

"Mrs. Andrew, I knew the risk, and I was ready to take it." David chimed in and my aunt glared at him with such an intensity that it would melt ice. Poor David scrunched back on the sofa and zipped his mouth.

"We aren't allowed to love!" Ammie looked at me with pain in her eyes and I sucked in a deep breath.

"Why?" Cluelessly I looked at both of them to clear the confusion, but none made eye contact. My nerves were so on fire after what my aunt's eyes showed me. I needed to know the truth. I had to save them.

"Our bloodline is cursed to never be happy with loved ones. One of them always dies and so did my father."

"No." I heard my voice cracking after knowing the truth. I looked at my aunt expecting her to tell me it's a lie but the pain in her eyes answered all my questions.

''But why?!" Clutching my pants tightly to hold on to my last piece of patience, I pried further.

"It's in the past. Ammie knew the result and after today's attack, I'm sure that Utkarsha knows about it and she'd not let them live."

"You took me to her, right? Isn't she our queen? Why'd she hurt her people?" I knew she didn't seem like she pretended, but all these things made little sense.

"Go now." My aunt chose not to answer me, making my blood boil. But watching how restless she was, I hid my curious questions and focused on the people in the living room.

"You can never run from her mom," Ammie said through gritted teeth.

"We can always try. Or else you both have to break up." She said.

"We can't." Ammie and David said at once. Shocked as I never saw Ammie disrespecting my aunt and today she crossed her limits worried me.

"Why not?" She asked. Taking slow steps towards Ammie. Her posture rigid but her hands were shaking. Confused by what she was up to, I trailed behind her, and David followed suit, soon crossing us and holding Ammie's hands tighter.

"You are pregnant." My aunt said, a statement not a question. Placing her hands gently on Ammie's belly, she caressed it. A lone tear trailed down her eyes towards her lips and then neck.

"We were not sure about it, but today we found that out. I'm three months pregnant." Ammie did not deny rather lay all her cards down.

"She must have known after your baby's heart started beating." My aunt said, shaking her head. "You risked so much, Ammie." Her voice trembled because her daughter was in danger. Her eyes showed so much happening, and I was sure that it would happen eventually. Nobody could stop it.

"What do we do now, mom?" Ammie held her mom's hand and pleaded with her to show her the right path.

"Run. As far as you could, to the north." I said as I looked into her eyes. She froze when I said this because she was unaware of the fact that I could see their future through their eyes. I saw more than that but could never disclose all to them.

"Do it quickly if you want to save her life." I had to save my family. The urgency in my voice turned everybody's attention towards me, but only my aunt had an inkling of why I was so desperate.

"Why- what will happen to her? What are you even talking about, Naina?" Ammie stared at me, clueless about the situation. I knew what I saw.

A dark forest dungeon, too dangerous to let any animal in. Our only hiding place where Utkarsha's guards couldn't reach. I saw Ammie and David running through the woods when her guards and spirit animals arrived. But they only ran after Utkarsha killed my aunt. They sliced her dire wolf in half. They left her body for Utkarsha's ravens to feed in. I couldn't let that happen.

"Masi, please come with us," I begged her. I lost my mom and now I knew if she stayed behind, we could probably never meet her again.

"Someone has to stop her." She said with a smile. I wished my mouth couldn't be so tongue-tied at the moment and I would have spit the truth, but when was I so lucky?

"She'd kill you, mom. Please" Ammie was helpless and so was my aunt.

"I have lived enough. It's your turn, baby. I will find you." My aunt hugged Ammie and gave her a green pendant.

"Never take it away from you. It is connected to our soul. The moment I die, its color fades away. Don't let Utkarsha harm your family." She whispered to Ammie.

"Naina, your mom left a box with me. She knew she couldn't make it to your eighteenth birthday, and I was waiting for the right time. It has the answer to all your questions. Please stay safe, honey. And remember, you are much more powerful than you give yourself credit for." My aunt handed me a rusty wooden box covered with blue nylon cloth. My mom used to cover all my things in nylon clothes and I never knew why.

"And remember, you have a tremendous responsibility to save a life that is breathing inside Ammie. I will find you guys or if I couldn't then you would. Eventually." She said. Her smile reminded me of my mom. That day, her smile was so overpowering, so dominating. That day I lost my mom, but I couldn't let anything happen to my aunt.

"I want to stay with you. We both will fight." I said.

"David is human, and if they trail them, then he would delay the run. If you go with them, you can protect them. Please do this for me." My aunt pleaded with me. Not knowing what to do, I looked at her and her eyes showed a blank space. As if there is no life anymore. My heart contrasted with the guilt that I couldn't save my people, even if I wanted to. Gripping the wooden box tighter, Ammie and David helped me pack some essentials, and we ran as fast as we could before the sun went down and we would convert into wild animals' food. I needed to save them.

Looking into David's eyes, I saw a palm tree. A huge one. Ravens flying up above the sky and snakes encircling him. Ammie and I were nowhere to be seen and the snakes slowly wrapped themselves on him. I tried to break eye contact as I couldn't see the horror of the situation and then I heard a loud roar. An extremely foreign sound that would frighten anyone to death.

"Naina!" I felt a tug on my t-shirt and blinked a few times. Studying my surroundings, we were still in the backyard. "Let's go." I said regretting blacking out of nowhere. Three of us did not look back and did not say goodbye as we wanted her to survive this and come back to us. I knew what I saw but my interpretation may be wrong. I desperately wanted to prove my stupid power wrong.
