What They Don't Know
Nadine's POV
School went three weeks without any mishaps and because of this now students were allowed to go out. Ina had been dying to go back into the town and do a bit of shopping. Those were the perks of being filthy rich.
"Finally! Fresh air at last" Ina says dramatically as we make our way to her car. I roll my eyes hopping in the passenger seat. Just as she is about to start the car a frantic Sage comes running out.
She stands right by the window. Ina rolls it down so that we are now face to face. "Hey where are you girls headed off too" ? She asks trying to catch her breath.
"Uh well we were going into town to do a bit of shopping. Why what's up"? I give her a confused and see her carrying a crisp yellow envelope.
"I was hoping to catch a ride with you guys. I need to mail something off and my stupid brother took the car". She gives a hopeful look and I immediately turn to Ina.
"Yeah sure you can ride with us" Ina chirps ignoring my look of warning. The girl was definitely strange and I normally wasn't one to judge. But there was definitely something strange about her.
"Thanks so much truly. I owe you one" Sage immediately hops in the backseat. Not a second later we take off and its eerily quiet.
"Soooo Sage your from Russia right"? Ina asks trying to make conversation. The atmosphere grew even more tense.
"Yup. Born and raised" she says her accent thick and heavy. Ina continues making conversation with her while I quietly look out the window.
"Sooo Nadine are you and Oskar like a couple" Sage asks bringing me out of my thoughts. Before I can answer Ina talks first.
"Ha! I wish I mean it's so obvious he's into her! But Nadine's just to blind to see it" Ina says giving me the side eye. I clench my teeth already feeling annoyed.
"Well why is that"? Sage asks seeming all the more intrigued.
"No we aren't a couple. And like I told Ina I'm not looking for a relationship right now" I say narrowing my eyes at Ina. Nothing else is said as we pull into the parking lot of the town's local post office.
"Well here you are. If you need a ride back we'll just be shopping around, do feel free to join us" Ina says looking at Sage.
"Thanks a bunch again". Sage immediately hops out of the car clutching the envelope tightly in her hands. We get out of the car making our way to a nail shop.
I stomp to a chair not paying Ina any mind. "Are you seriously mad at me. It's not like I told a lie or something. It's not even a big deal". She plops into a seat next to me as she places her feet in the tub.
"I just wished you'd stop telling people that Oskar has a thing for me. People are going to get the wrong idea and I don't have time for it". I crossed my arms in frustration.
"Alright fine. I promise to keep my big mouth shut" Ina says putting her hands up. The rest of the afternoon went by and the next thing I knew we were loading tons of bags into the back of Inas car.
"Phew shopping really wore me out. Let's go get some lunch I'm starving" Ina says patting her belly. Shaking my head we stop at a little cafe. I order a sandwich while Ina orders almost everything off the menu.
When our food comes we dive in. "I wonder if Sage got lost, we did tell her we would be in town" ina says munching on a chicken wing. My eyes glance out the window when watching people passing by.
My eyes immediately spot Sage coming out from behind some trees. Her hands were painted red and the sight made me nauseous. "She's right there... look" I point out the window and Ina turns to see.
"Nadine... no one is there. Are you okay"? Ina asks looking at me as if I was going crazy. It look to see no one standing there. I knew I wasn't going crazy.... something definitely wasn't right.
After we finished eating we made our way to the car. Ina is practically chatting my ear off once we head down the road back to school. "I've got everything all planned out! Plus this week I made a vow to go to the g-"
Ina steps on the breaks hard stopping the car. In front of us a strange creature stands tall with long nails. "Uhh Ina... I know you see what I see....right"? I'm trembling as I slowly turn to look at Ina who appears frozen.
The creature looks at us with beady red us. Blood drips from its mouth and it bears its teeth at us. I can't even tell what it is at it's ears are pointy. It stares at us sniffing the air, dark fur covered it's body and it resembled a wolf.
But a wolf could not stand like a human. No this... this creature was something else. "Ina.... we have to go...Ina drive....DRIVE"! I scream as the creature starts to charge at us. Ina snaps out of her frozen state and drives. We hit the creature hard as blood splatters on the windows.
I try and hold back from vomiting in the car. Blood drips from the windows and large chunks slowly slide down. When we are back on the road to school we don't say a word. We stop at a car wash and immediately get her car cleaned.
Tonight was a night I would never forget. The next morning Ina hardly said a word to me about what happened. We didn't tell the school chairwoman or anything. The atmosphere was tense and I could see Ina definitely was not okay.
As we were waiting on the lunch line I could feel eyes watching my every move. My gaze immediately drifted to Sage who looked to be having an argument with her twin brother. Immediately an image of her coated red hands came to mind.
I knew what I saw. Ina had came out of the trees with bloody hands. It made me very wary of her. We grabbed our lunch and sat down at our usual table. "Ina... I know what we saw yesterday was alot to handle. But please don't shut me out" I beg grabbing one of her hands.
They slightly shook. "I...I'm just still freaked out that's all. We have to tell someone Nadine! What if someone saw what happened" ? Ina whisper yells her face serious.
"No one saw us ok. Just relax I'm sure someone will think it's some animal and probably bury it or something" I say trying to console her. We eat our lunch in silence both preoccupied in our heads.
Things would have been better if we never saw what we did.
