The next day, Prerna woke up in the middle of the night. Habitually, she turned and rose to kiss her husband on the cheek. While doing so, she saw a heart pulling sight.
"Rishabh," Prerna gently shook his shoulder. "Rishabh!"
"Hmm?" Rishabh groggily mumbled, still asleep.
"Aankhein kholein."
"Accha, accha. One second," Rishabh slowly opened his tired eyes. "What's up?"
Prerna nodded beside him and he turned to find Krish sitting on the floor beside him, sleeping with his head on the bed. Rishabh placed his hand on his head, gently stroking him. He turned to look back at his wife.
"Have I told you I love you?"
Prerna leaned down to kiss him. "Yeh toh mujhe aap se kehna chahiye. Jis tarha aap Krish ko pyaar krte hain, bacchon ko bhi pata hai," she had tears in her eyes.
Rishabh cupped her face with his free hand, wiping her tears. "Mere bete se main nahi pyaar karun ga toh kon kare ga?" He rose up to kiss her and scootch back.
Rishabh placed an arm over Krish's shoulders, his other hand on his head. "Krishy," Rishabh whispered, while pulling him up on the bed.
Krish suddenly woke up. "Did I wake you?"
Rishabh smiled. "Nahi toh. You can come on the bed any time, you know that, right?"
Krish yawned and nodded his head, smiling tired.
"Aa jao," Rishabh invited him on the bed, letting him settle on the pillow.
Krish wrapped his hands around Rishabh's arm mid sleep. "Mujhe chorde ke nahi jaana."
Rishabh kissed his head. "Kabhi nahi."
In the morning, Kukki and Addi came over at breakfast. Pari and Arsh told them they were going to get a car for Krish today. Everyone had their own suggestions to give; which car to get, what features it should have, and everything in between.
"Baba, you don't say anything!" Kukki warned Rishabh.
"Kyun bhai? Mere bolne mein kya hai?"
"Agar aap boleinge ke the sky is green, toh Krish bhi bole ga sky toh green hi hota hai," Addi said. "Meaning, aap jo kaheinge Krish wohi kare ga."
Rishabh laughed. "Okay, okay. Main kuch nahi kehta. Krish, you should make your own decision. Whichever car you want."
The whole breakfast continued talking about different cars. The conversation continued even after Rishabh, Addi, and Krish went to the office. Rishabh wanted to take him to give him a more formal introduction around the business. Of course, Krish had been coming since he was born, but now he would be getting shares on his birthday, and officially joining work.
Rishabh only had a few meetings that day, so he left the office early with Krish. They went home to pick up everyone else, swapping the sedan with their luxury SUV so everyone could fit.
They spent a few hours at Rishabh's go to dealership, checking out different cars and test driving them. Finally they settled on a mid class sedan in Krish's favorite color. By habit, Rishabh went up to pay, but Krish argued and insisted to pay himself. It took persuasion from Prerna for Rishabh to relent.
"Congratulations, Krishy! Abh new car ki treat kon de ga?" Kukki teased him.
"Aap ne kahan jaana hai, di?"
"Hmm," Kukki faked thought as she looked at her younger siblings. They came up with one answer. "Mall!"
Krish drove them to the mall in his new car. Pari was excited to take her big sister to her favorite stores and they ran in. Arsh waited for Krish and then the brothers went ahead too. Rishabh escorted his wife and they took their time strolling into the mall. They went to a fancy clothing store, picking outfits for their anniversary party. Then they went to get a gift for Krish's birthday.
"Do you think he'll like this?" Rishabh asked as they examined a watch.
"Rishabh, jo aapko pasand hai, wohi Krishy ko bhi pasand hai. So, you decide what you like," Prerna told him.
They spent a few long minutes going through different gift options before they finally settled. Once they were done, they went to the food court to wait for the kids.
"Prerna?" A voice caught their attention.
"Nivi di!" Prerna got up to hug her. "Kaisi hain aap?"
"I'm good, how are you?" Nivi asked back.
"Main bhi thik. Come, sit," Prerna offered her to join them. "Aur yeh kaisi hai?" She leaned into the stroller Nivi had, taking a look at the sleeping four year old.
"Annie bhi thik hai. It's been such a long day." Nivi pulled a seat from the next table. "How are you, Mr. Bajaj?" Nivi asked him as she sat down.
"I'm doing fine, Nividita. You know you don't have to call me Mr. Bajaj all the time, right?" Rishabh teased.
Nivi laughed. "Sorry, Mr. Bajaj. Aap puri life mein Mr. Bajaj hi rahein ge. How are the kids?"
"Everyone's good. Krish came back last night," Rishabh told her.
"That's good! Accha hua pehle aa gaya. Pata nahi uske baghair aap ka kya haal hota!"
"Koi farq nahi pardta. I don't think yeh dono eik din bhi phone kiye baghair rahe honge," Prerna told her.
"Where's Anupam?" Rishabh happily changed the subject.
"Woh boys ko clothes shopping le ke gaye hain. Nivan ka school play hai, aur Vihaan ka music recital hai. Next month hai, aap sabh zaroor aayie ga."
"Of course," Prerna replied. "Hot cross buns better hua?"
Nivi laughed. "Oh, God! Bus yeh recital ho jaye, phir no more till next year. Abhi toh keh raha tha Vihaan ke Krish ki birthday pr performance kare. Woh toh shukar hai Anupam ne roka."
"Kyun roka? He should have done it," Rishabh suggested.
"Thank you, lekin usko sunne ke liye aap ko recital pe aana parde ga. Phir aap Anupam ko thank you bol dena."
Rishabh laughed. "Okay."
"Aur, Pari ka kaisa hua..." they talked about their kids and lives until all the kids came and joined them. Rishabh got up to greet Anupam and they gathered tables and chairs to sit together. The kids, Kukki included, hounded Krish for their treat. The adults just sat and mused at his predicament.
"Accha, toh car toh khud le li, toh phir birthday pe papa kya dein ge?" Anupam asked.
"Hmm, I don't know. Jo bhi dein, I'll take it!" Krish said.
Anupam patted him on the shoulder. "See? You two should learn from him. Jabh dekho farmaishein karte rehte hain!" He complained to his own sons.
"Bacchon ka toh kaam hi yahi hota hai, Anupam. Hum ne paida kiya hai, toh hum hi sambhaalein ge," Rishabh preached.
"Abh kahaan Rishabh Bajaj, aur kahaan hum."
"Bajaj banne ke liye ziyada hard work toh nahi hai. Bus business smart hona chahiye. Aur kuch nahi toh investments se start kr lo. Savings."
"Sikho kuch in se, Anupam," his wife recommended.
"Oh, God," Anupam whined. "Aap sabh jub mere against kharde ho jaate ho na, toh main bohot regret karta hoon."
"Kya?" Rishabh laughed.
"Prerna ko aapse milwana."
Prerna froze. She nervously looked at Nividi, if he wouldn't tell the past in front of their kids. Rishabh grabbed her hand under the table, squeezing her comfortingly.
"Aap ne ma aur baba ko milwaya tha?"
"Hmm, of course! But I'm saving the story for the toast at their wedding anniversary."
Two days later, Anupam made a toast to them. "Aajh joh mahaul hai, jo loge hain, jo pyaar hai, aap ko pata hai iss ka credit kisko jaata hai?"
"Kisko?" The crowd asked.
"The one and only, yours truly!" Anupam raised his hand. The crowd clapped. "Kuch twenty years ago, hamari family ko problem hui thi, aur main ne Prerna ko insist kiya ke woh eik Mr. Bajaj se help maange. Aur phir, the rest is history!"
Prerna sighed in relief. She looked at Rishabh and smiled as they both acknowledged Anupam putting a positive spin on their first meeting.
"To the happy couple!"
"May you have many more years together!"
"Now give us a kiss!" Nivi teased, and the crowd chanted.
"Let's give the fans what they want, Mrs. Bajaj," Rishabh smiled at her.
"Oh? So sirf fans ke liye?" Prerna teased him.
Rishabh grabbed her arms and swung her down into a dip.
"You know I love you, Prerna."
"I love you too, Rishabh."
And then they kissed.
