Jabse tum mil gaye... raaste khil gaye
Title is the song 'Sawarne lage' from movie 'Mitron'
The news of twins... one boy and one girl... brought not just relief to all of them, but a sense of gratitude for the doctor, who had made this unexpected, and extremely complicated feat possible.
Vishakha choked with elation, "Thank you, thank you doctor."
Nanu was equally overjoyed, "Aapne dil khush kar diya. Hum kitni der mein apne bachhon ko dekh sakte hain?"
Doctor looked back at the closed door, then smiled at him, "Bas do minute aur. Aap log mil lijiye main thodi der mein aati hun." Nodding at them, she walked away towards her room.
Sameer, who stood rooted to the spot, had his eyes fixed on the door.
Nanu took quick long strides towards him and engulfed him in a tight hug, "Bhagwan ne tere liye dher saari khushiyaan bheji hain beta."
Tears blurred his vision, as he felt himself drown in nanu's warmth. All he could mutter was, "Haan nanu."
Fondly stroking his head, nanu smiled, "Naina ne sach mein hum sabko bohot kamaal ka tohfa diya hai."
Nodding, Sameer pursed his lips. He couldn't wait to see her. The moment he heard the sound of door, he sprinted towards the room.
Vishakha's teasing voice trailed him, "Aaram se, bachhe bhaage nahi jaa rahe."
As he reached the threshold, his gaze stopped at Naina. She seemed to have paled overnight. Her skin was as white as the sheet. With her eyes shut, she laid on the bed, breathing faster than normal. There were two nurses in the room, and he could also hear footsteps following him. But at this moment, all he wanted was to comfort his Maina.
Sensing him, her eyes flew open before his lips could touch her forehead. Some colour returned to her face as she gave him a weak smile. He smiled too, taking a long inhale in relief. Since last night, when he had first seen the bloodstain at home, this was the first deep breath he had taken. Gulping down the emotional lump in his throat, he smoothened wisps of her hair, which were stuck to her sweaty forehead and cheeks. His gaze went down to her neck, where the hospital gown had evident wet patches. She was covered in sweat... on the cold December morning. He could not even fathom the harrowing experience she must have had, given that she was in pain for almost ten hours.
"Mubarak ho Mr Maheshwari, aakhir aapko beti mil hi gayi." She whispered in an exhausted, yet ecstatic voice when he didn't say anything about the babies.
He cupped her cheek, "Thank you. And sorry."
Her questioning eyes lifted to him.
Blinking repeatedly, he tried to contain the tears, "Tumne yeh saara dard akele jhela, uske liye sorry... tumhe itni takleef, hui uske liye sorry... main tumhare..."
She put a hand on his mouth, her feeble smile contrasting with the twinkle in her eyes, "Ek baar apne babies ko dekh toh lo. Koi dard, koi takleef unke saamne yaad hi nahi rahegi. Sameer, hamari beti aur hamara beta aise gifts hain jinke liye main isse kai guna zyada dard uthane ko taiyar hun. Unhe dekhoge na, toh mujhe bhool jaoge."
He lifted her hand, bringing it to his lips, and shook his head, "Tumhe toh main iss janm mein kya agle saat janm mein bhi nahi bhool sakta."
Nanu's clearing of throat made their eyes move to the other side of bed. Both nanu and Vishakha had one baby each in their arms, as they stood grinning.
Vishakha affectionately patted Naina's cheek, "Theek ho na beta?"
"I'm fine mummy." She smiled, then looked at nanu, "Aap raat bhar kyon ruke nanu, tired ho gaye toh aapki tabiyat kharab ho jayegi."
Nanu gave her a vibrant smile, "Thakunga kyon? Buddha hun kya? Arre beta, tune yeh do do khilone dekar mujhe phir se jawan bana diya. Ab toh mujhme itni energy aa gayi hai ki agle paanch che saal inka ghoda ban sakta hun."
Naina couldn't help the tears that rolled down the sides of her eyes, "Thank you nanu, mujhe himmat dene ke liye."
He gently placed a hand on her head, "Beta, yeh teri khud ki himmat hai jo aaj ka din hamari kismat mein aaya hai." He didn't say more, but it was enough for Naina to know that he was aware of the entire struggle that she and Sameer went through. More tears made way down her eyes.
Vishakha wiped them, presuming them to be happy tears, "Bas bas ab aur aansu nahi. Khushi dikhane ke aur tareeke bhi hote hain."
Sameer fished out his handkerchief and carefully dabbed at her eyes. She smiled at him, then pointed with her chin towards the babies, who he had not yet seen.
Nanu grinned with pride at the baby he held, "Zara dekh toh Sameer kaisa lagta tha tu jab itna chota tha. Tera beta bilkul tujhpe gaya hai."
Vishakha chuckled, "Papa, woh beti hai. Beta toh mere paas hai."
Nanu narrowed his eyes at the sleeping baby, "Nahi nahi, iski shakl bilkul Sameer jaisi hai, yeh pakka beta hai."
Vishakha looked at the nurse, "Aap batao zara mere papa ko. Unhe confusion ho gaya hai."
The nurse smiled, "Sir, aapne left wala baby liya hai na, woh baby girl hai."
Nanu cuddled the little bundle, "Chalo bhai maan liya. Iska matlab meri gudiya ki shakl apne papa se milti hai." He then looked up abruptly, "Lekin maine toh right side wale baby ko uthaya tha."
The nurse appeared baffled as well, turning to other one for help. Both babies were securely wrapped in similar sheets, and appeared quite similar.
Other nurse rolled her eyes too, "Yeh toh sach mein confusion ho gaya. Wait, main baby girl ke liye pink wala wrap laati hun."
Sameer got up and walked to the little group, his eyes fixated on the babies, "Nanu, mummy, mujhe dijiye."
Vishakha looked up in alarm, "Dono nahi Sameer, ek ek kar ke utha. Dono ko kaise sambhalega?"
"Main pehli baar dono ko ek saath lena chahta hun, mummy." He stepped closer, curving his arms at the elbows.
Nanu and Vishakha together placed the babies in the crook of his arms, helping him adjust properly before stepping back a little.
Sameer was speechless when he first set his eyes on them. The babies were wrapped in white cloth, with only their faces visible. He dipped his head to the side, wondering at the marvel that was before him... his son and his little princess. Both had their eyes shut. Their faces were quite similar, their skin covered in a reddish hue.
He had imagined this moment several times... but nothing had prepared him for the real bliss, the perfection that he saw in the two tiny creations in front of him. They were so small, yet they were substantial for his family to be complete. They had just stepped into the real world few minutes back, yet they were already his world. They were a miracle, a real precious one, and he just couldn't stop adoring them.
A different warmth ignited through him as he felt a profound connection with them instantly. They both were his babies... his children. He would always be the one they depended upon. They would look upto him for every need, would trust him to deal with any problems they faced, would reckon him to share their smiles even tears, would consider him their hero... they would be a version of him which he would see grow, right in front of his eyes, and it was his duty to shape their life the way nanu had shaped his.
He was enamoured at the huge responsibility.
"I love you... both of you." He mumbled in a soft voice, almost inaudible.
One of the babies opened its eyes, and stared right back at him. He forgot to blink. Twitching his lips, the baby squirmed a bit, then scrunched its tiny, button nose.
"Yeh hai meri doll." Sameer blurted, his face breaking into a beaming smile.
"Tujhe kaise pata?" Vishakha came closer, placing her arm under Sameer's, to support the moving baby.
"Mummy, aap hi kehti hain na ek maa apne bachhe ko kahin bhi pehchaan leti hai." His eyes remained on the little one as she twisted her head from side to side.
Vishakha gave him an amusing look, "Tu maa hai iski?"
"Haan." Sameer accepted without hesitation, "Jaise nanu mere liye mummy ban jaate hain, main bhi apne bachhon ke liye unki mummy banke rahunga."
"Waah mere sher, tune toh exam dene se pehle hi distinction le li." Nanu chortled.
Vishakha laughed, "Agar Sameer ki baat sahi hai toh aap bhi paas ho jaoge papa."
The nurse came over, carrying a folded pink sheet. Vishakha took the baby that Sameer asserted to be the girl, and put her in the crib. Sameer took the other baby to Naina, perching on the bed, and lifted his folded arm slightly, "Dekho, hai na handsome... bilkul apne papa ki tarah."
She let out a weary exhale, "Isse bhi sikha dena, khud ki tareef karna... jaise tum aur Ayush kaafi nahi ho."
Sameer grinned, "Ab tumhari kismat hi itni achhi hai toh koi kya kare. Do handsome pehle se the, ab teesra bhi. Hum teeno hain hi tareef ke kabil toh khud ki praise karenge hi na."
They all looked at the nurse as she announced, "Yeh lijiye, aapki daughter ko humne pink sheet pehna di. Ab koi confusion nahi hoga."
Nanu gloated, "Dekha, main bhi paas ho gaya. Meri goud mein beta hi tha. Vishakha, bhai tum teen bachhon ke baad bhi kachhi reh gayi. Sameer mujhpe gaya hai isiliye itna smart hai."
While Vishakha rolled her eyes, Naina and Sameer looked at each other, and laughed, speaking together, "Teen nahi chaar."
Nurse told them that the babies had to be fed now, and after that Naina needed to sleep as she was exhausted. She said they all could go home and come later. After nanu had called up Rohan in the morning to inform him about the arrival of babies, he had sent the car with driver, in case anyone needed it. Sameer urged his mom and nanu to go back home and rest since they had been here whole night. He refused to leave, saying that he would stay back with Naina.
Dr Amrita checked on Naina half an hour later, and informed Sameer that she was doing fine, but needed to rest as much as she can, since the delivery was quite tough and tiring for her. She got a wider couch placed in Naina's room for him.
"Tum bhi thodi der so jao. Babies ka khyal rakhne ke liye tumhe bhi energy chahiye. Aane wala time tum dono ke liye easy nahi hoga, isliye jab bhi chance mile, rest kiya karo. Aur health ko ignore mat karna. Naina ke saath saath tumhe bhi apni zyada care karni hogi. Do bachhon ke saath parents weak ya bimar hona afford nahi kar sakte." She gave him the much needed advise.
It was around two hours later when some sounds made Sameer sit up in his makeshift bed, rubbing his eyes. Rohan and Preeti were near the crib, with Arhaan, and were talking in whispers.
Before he could say anything, Naina's voice made them look up, "Aru."
Preeti squealed, "Nainaaa." Rushing to her, she bent over and took her in a soft hug, "Congratulations."
"Congratulations bhabhi. Dono kitne pyare hain." Rohan beamed.
Sameer ran his fingers through his hair, and stood up, "Bachhe kiske hain, pyare toh honge hi."
Rohan turned quickly, and flashed a grin, talking to Arhaan who was in his arms, "Aru, dekh tere bade papa abse double papa ban gaye."
He then stepped ahead and wound his free arm around Sameer tightly, "I'm so happy bhai. Congratulations."
Sameer smiled proudly, "Thanks. Aru ke liye do do chote bhai behen aaye hain."
"Yess." Rohan winked, "Aru kabse apne dono siblings ka wait kar raha hai. Aakhir usse mera badla jo lena hai, apne chote bhai behen pe dadagiri karke."
Sameer frowned, "Rohan, main pehle hi bata raha hun, tu Aru ko kuch ulta seedha nahi sikhayega."
"Ulta seedha?" Rohan tapped a finger on his chin, then gave a solemn look, "Aapko kisne sikhaya tha yeh... ulta seedha."
Sameer shrugged, "Main kahan kuch ulta seedha kehta hun. Woh toh teri harkatein hi aisi hoti hain ki tujhe sudharne ke liye mujhe thoda strict hona padta hai. Aakhir responsibility hai meri."
"Right." Rohan clicked his fingers, "Responsibility. Bas yehi sikhana hai Aru ko."
Preeti threw her hands in air, "Guys, kuch toh sharm karo. Tum dono iss waqt room mein sabse bade ho ya sabse chote?"
Naina sighed, "Inka kuch nahi ho sakta."
Rohan turned and made way towards the bed, to stand beside Preeti, "Nahi nahi bhabhi, jabse aapne samjhaya hai tabse toh hum sirf friendly jhagda karte hain. Bhai ko aapse daant na pade isliye ab main unki taang bhi nahi kheenchta."
Sameer gritted his teeth, but before he could react, Preeti retorted, "Aur tumhe kaun bachayega meri daant se?"
"Naina." Rohan quickly slipped to her other side, leaning towards Naina.
"Bhabhi... bhabhi hai teri." Sameer glared.
Preeti slapped her forehead, "Naina, main bata rahi hun, hamare bachhe abhi se in dono se zyada matured honge."
Smiling, Naina looked at Sameer. he pursed his lips and shrugged. When it came to his Naina, he couldn't help feel jealous.
Preeti went to the crib and picked up one baby, "Yeh hai teen bhaiyon ki one and only behen. Sweetie, tu toh zabardast pamper hone wali hai. Waise toh tere papa hi kaafi hain iss kaam ke liye, lekin mujhe pata hai, teeno chote samples bhi tujhpe jaan denge."
Sameer picked up his son, "Aur kya. Mere teeno bete apni behen ko princess bana ke rakhnege."
Arhaan lunged towards the babies. Rohan brought him where Sameer and Preeti were standing. Arhaan first carefully observed the baby boy, then leaned towards the girl in Preeti's arms, and nudged his lips on her head.
Sameer gave a quick kiss on Aru's cheek, elated, "Dekha, apni sister ko pehchaan liya."
Naina asked Preeti about Ayush.
"School nahi gaya. Aaj Deepu aur Ayush dono ne chutti maari hai." Preeti chuckled, "As per Ayush, aaj uske brother aur sister ka 'real wala happy birthday' hai. Thodi der mein mummy papa ke saath ayenge dono. Ayush toh abhi hi ready tha lekin mummy ne kaha woh tere liye breakfast bana ke layengi tabhi sabko le ayengi."
Sameer looked at Rohan, "Papa kab aaye?"
"Subah paanch baje." He informed, "Raat ko hi airport aa gaye the. Jo pehli flight mili le li."
A mischievous smile lit up on his face, "Aap har new entry pe humein aadhi raat ko airport pohoncha dete ho. Kal babies ke liye, aur last time jab grah pravesh hua tha... Naina ka." He stuck out his tongue, holding one ear when Sameer gave him a vexed look, "Matlab bhabhi ka."
Seeing him, Arhaan immediately held his ear too, making all of them laugh.
"Bhai waah." Vivek's voice boomed in as he entered with Vishakha, "Yeh hospital ka room kam aur hamara ghar zyada lag raha hai."
Vishakha threw him an annoyed glance, "Hospital kyon hamara ghar lagega? Aap bhi na... kuch bhi bolte hain."
"Oho Vishakha mera matlab hai, yahan se hansne ki awaaz bahar tak sunayi de rahi hai. Sab kitne khush hain." He explained, then quickly moved ahead towards Sameer, smiling gently at the little one in his arms, "Aur yeh raha hamari khushi ka ek reason." He leaned to place a kiss on baby's forehead, "Ab aap khud bata dijiye aap hamari pari hain ya rajkumar."
Sameer smiled, "Yeh beta hai papa. Meri beti wahan hai, Preeti ke paas."
Vivek straightened, and kissed his son's forehead as well, "Badhai ho beta. Aaj tu bilkul apne baap ke barabar ho gaya... do bete aur ek beti ka baap banke."
He then went to Naina, and stroked her head, "Jabse tum Ayush ko leke ghar pe aayi ho, har din pehle se behtar hota hai. Itni saari khushiyon ke liye... thank you."
Naina was about to ask him about Ayush when his voice reached her as he hollered, "Mummaaa."
She tried to sit up, but Vishakha put a hand on her shoulder, shaking her head, "Baithne se back pe strain ayega. Tum leti raho."
Ayush was thrilled as he carefully hugged her, "Mumma, aap meri sister aur ek bhai bhi leke aaye. Ab mere paas three brother sister ho gaye. Deepu bua ne bola ab hum team bana ke khel sakte hain."
"Haww buddhu." Deepika widened her eyes, "Maine bola jab yeh bade ho jayenge. Abhi kaise khelenge, yeh teeno itne chote se hain."
"Bas main hi big hun." He stated smugly.
Naina kissed him on the cheek, "Mera Ayush sabse big hai, isliye sabka dhyan rakhega. Haina?"
He nodded fiercely, then looked at the baby in Sameer's arms. Climbing on Naina's bed quickly, he kneeled, "Papa, mujhe dekhna hai apne baby ko."
Sameer came close to the bed, hitching up his shoulder so baby's face was visible to Ayush, "Yeh tumhara bhai hai. Lagta hai na tumhare jaisa."
Ayush grinned, "Arre haan yeh toh same mere jaisa hai. Aur meri sister?"
Preeti walked around the bed, lest he tried to jump over Naina to reach her, "Teri sister mere paas hai. Puch rahi thi abhi tak mera Ayush bhai kyon nahi aaya."
"Hain?" Ayush stared at her wide eyes, "Isko bolna aa gaya? Aru se first aa gayi?"
Deepika smirked as she too leaned with him to admire the baby, "Girl hai na. Girls toh hoti hi smart hain."
"Girl nahi meri sister hai. Isliye smart hai. Jaise main smart hun." Ayush declared matter of factly.
Naina's eyes darted to Sameer, a knowing smile gracing her lips. He met her gaze, smiling back with the same smug expression as Ayush.
