II. I'm not the only one

On that night, a heavy rain poured into the week-long drought. I was in my room classically reading another novel while the thunder and rain rumbled and pitter-pattered from the outside playing a fairly-dreadful orchestra.

"Adrian," I heard Nathan calling outside my room. "Adrian? Are you still awake?" His knocks on my door chorused with the music outside caused by the storm. "Adrian?"

'Is he afraid of the rolling storm?' I thought, stood up carrying the novel I was reading, and opened the door for him. "Why're you still awake?" It's already 1 in the morning, both of us seemed still have light-eyed.

He smiled, and walked straight to my bed. I noticed his holding a hard-bound Further Mathematics book. "I can't understand a series of problem here. I thought you can help me," he said, patting on my mattress to imply that I should come near him and help him solve the problem.

"I'm not sure." I scanned through the book. Most of its pages were loosened, a proof that he has been reading and solving cases on it. It was the book he mentioned he borrowed from a friend's brother studying Engineering on a university on the west of the city. The book is engraved with 'Yohei', the owner's family name maybe.

"Did you already own this book?" I asked, scanning some pages and noticed that it already has Nathan's writings on it.

"Yeah. I asked Yohan to ask his Brother if I can have this books. His brother agreed," he explained. "So let's have this," pointing into a series of problems, applying Fourier Analysis, linear algebra and applied probability.

I tried to solve and explain as much as my capacity can provide, with exchanges of ideas and learning from Nathan. We solved almost all the problems. We left some problems unsolved, and we had some unsure answers. But Nathan affirmed that he was at least able to answer his questions and clasp the basics. He can handle the rest. We ended at around 4 in the morning, and my alarm is set in 2 hours.

We did separate reviews until we reached the morning periods. The professors did not attend the classes for a meeting in preparation for the semester-end activity and some urgent matters. Pia and I were helping each other out. Pia has also been a consistent academic achiever, and we have been competing and supporting each other for these years. I felt tired and rested for a while. "Pia, want something to drink? I'll get you some."

"Sure. I want any milk strawberry," she showed off her smile politely. "Please."

"No problem." I looked around. Some of our classmates are reviewing as well, but majority are either playing with their phones or chatting with friends. I can't seem to find Nathan inside the classroom. I went out to the nearest vending machine. Not from afar, I saw Nathan talking with a student, holding the Further Mathematics book we were reviewing this early morning. They're reading a page together, with Nathan leading which had to be read. In between, they had laughter and even tapping each other's back.

I punched for two more drinks. One soya drink for Nathan, and a random flavored tea for the guy he's talking to. "Nathan!" I called. He immediately responded by waving his hand at me and called my name back. I approached the two of them. "What're you doing out here?"

"I'm asking Yohan if he can re-assure and solve some of the problems we left this morning," he responded pointing his thumb towards the guy he's talking with, whom I assume is Yohan. I noticed Nathan was making a face, maybe referring to Yohan. He's moving his lips trying to speak 'He's our classmate.'

"Yohan, hi. I'm Adrian." I was offering a handshake but my hands were holding four cans of drinks. "Oh, you can get the tea flavored drink," reaching him my right hand with the tea-flavored drink and soya. "Nathan, get the soya."

"Yey! Thanks," Nathan excitedly grabbed his drink and opened it. "Yohan, get yours."

Yohan seemed hesitant. "Ah~"

"Come on. Get it," Nathan insisted. "He changes his mind easily."

"He-he." Yohan grinned. "I know," he whispered. "Thank you very much. I'll drink this later," he held it with his hands. "Thanks for this," he repeated.

"So your Yohei, the brother of the owner of this book, huh?" I suddenly felt tangy looking at him with a slight glower which I was controlling not to be too much. Before he even answered, "Nathan, Pia needs us. Let's head back in," I invited.

"Yohan, I'll try solving these problems with Adrian and Pia. If there are items we missed, I'll get back to you."

"Sure," Yohan replied, still holding the can of tea. "I'll see you around!"

"Drink it up." I said as Nathan and I took off.

While Nathan and I were walking back to the classroom, "You don't remember him, don't you?" I was prepared to answer him on a very polite way but he rephrased his question, "Or should I ask: 'You don't know him, don't you?"

I did not respond to his question. I just sipped from my canned juice, and remained silent. He gently hit me on my head with his book. "I already told you. You should at least know our classmates. That's basic to survive in schools."

Adrian had his lunch with Pia at the school cafeteria, while Nathan was with their other classmates. Pia received a message from Nathan requesting her to company Adrian for the lunch, with text which read as, "I am not in the mood to be eating with him."

Students were going in and out, walking from behind and on our sides. Adrian was staring at Nathan even though a conversation is happening between him and Pia. He was munching only morsel of his lunch, while stealing glances on Nathan. He realized that he failed to see that Nathan has his other friends too.

"I was just being selfish," Adrian thought. "I knew I was not the only one. There were many of us here, and in him."
