Hells, Heavens, Underworlds and Limbo(s)
Today's lesson is a short one about the hells and heavens as well as the underworlds with a bit of an explanation regarding limbo(s). I don't know as much about the hells which is why it is a conjoined lesson. The hells or underworlds each have a respective heaven of some kind which is the other reason for a combined lesson. I will give some examples of each of the three as well as a sentence or two describing the main differences and similarities between them.
The heavens are generally home to aengelic entities and deity-like ones. Just like the hells, there are several planes and 'districts' to them, generally separated by type of entity and religion. The weather here tends to be of a sunnier and clearer variety but it can vary albeit mildly. Paradise, essentially the best place you can get in the afterlife, is a term for a plane of heaven that exists as a mortal afterlife.. Each heaven has its own sorting and handling of mortals but in the case of Nordic Mythos, Vahalla and Folkvangry are considered 'halls' in Asgard but it's more like a connection between a God Plane and a Paradise Plane. Olympus is a God Plane and Elysium is a Paradise Plane existent with their Underworld. Generally, a mortal will not have an afterlife directly on a God Plane but some may have grabbed the favor of some deities, perhaps by being love interests, children of, curiosities, or other such things, though that last one is quite rare from what I have heard. Most White Aengels live in their own heaven planes but some are given a chance to work with deities and celestials as advisors, messengers, warriors and other tasks. Spirits on the other hand, while having their own heaven planes, often coinciding with aengelic ones, would generally prefer to spend their time on a planet or plane of their choice or floating in the endless Nether, sometimes called 'Void', in a trance-like state until they may be needed.
The hells are home to daemonic entities and a lot of the ones considered to be akin to deities will avoid the hells - and the underworlds - except for those in control of them and those who need to interact with the entities in charge. The High Royals of the Hells are generally deities or entities similar to them, such as Celestials, aengelic- or daemonic-deity hybrids or other combinations and tend to be powerful entities from specific religions. The ones below then in the hierarchies are generally akin to aengel in power and may even be fallen ones. Others may be related to the main line, such as how a king's cousin would likely be a lord. An example is Lucifer and the six lords, his generals. Each one was originally an aengel but fell. Lucifer was higher in power and thus stayed as a leader of them even after The Fall. An interesting note is that the High Royals don't often interact with each other unless it's for a really good reason, such as an emergency of sorts concerning a large portion of the hells. Another note about hells is that they are where most people go and are sorted similarly to the underworld, except one major difference. You don't end up 'in a line', 'crossing a river' or 'sinking through the ground' as with underworlds. Instead, you just get sorted, with little chance to say anything about it.
The underworlds are less likely to have any actual daemonia entities in the standard sense of the word, though some do still have 'monsters' as would be called by standard terms, though I prefer to merely can them animals, people and craetura. These craetura may be daemonic in nature, some may be considered ghostly and others may just be general creatures. Underworlds also tend to be more 'physical adjacent' then hells or heavens. Because of this, their weather is generally of the 'hot lava cave' variety, like Greek Mythos, or 'cold and dark like graves', as in the Nordic Helheim.
Limbo is both all of these and none. Limbo can be you waiting in that line or crossing the river or stuck in your grave waiting to sink. Limbo can be a Paradise to some, all quiet and neutral and the nothingness of pure perfect existence. For others, it can be a hell, never doing anything, always staring at a wall, bored evermore. However, there is at least one method I know of to escape it. Become a temporary aengelaea, a grey aengel, a Slayer as was the term I and a few others used. This term was due to the fact that they had a job to take out the daemonic entities. I recall that if you gave it the power you would needing a Black Aengel and that you could choose to continue as a Slayer if you so wished but I don't remember anyone ever trusting to a Paradise or even to an Aengel Heaven despite being told it was possible. However, the Realm of Lingering is a kind of limbo as well, in its own way, as it's where ghosts go if they are not on their planet trying to finish business but still have unfinished business to handle. Eventually they'll find their way back to their mortal lands and do their best to fulfill what they need to to move on.
