Chapter 3- Luke- The Dragon

"I found it..." I said breathlessly. "The mythical world...I finally found it." I stood, flabbergasted by the sight in front of me, eyes wide in amazement, before a smile crept over my face. "Yes! It's real! It's all real!" I yelled. The world fell quiet.

The creatures turned to face me, giving surprised, scared, or angered expressions, which I didn't know was possible for these beasts. Most creatures backed away, except a group of three dragons, one blood red, another a deep blue, and the third yellow and light blue. The red one was around eight feet tall, stiff and brawny, yellowish orange, armor-like plates tracing its underbelly. This one stood at the head of the group, possibly as the leader.

The Blue one was around half a foot taller, with a body similar to that of a long necked dinosaur. It had wavy spikes, alike to streamers, down its back, flowing when a gust of wind blew by. Its wings, folded down against its back, were curved and webbed like the fins of a fish. Lastly, there was the yellow and light blue one. This one was quite a bit smaller, only reaching about five feet tall. Yet that was it's height when it stood crouched down, belly close to the ground and tail swishing back and forth. It's wings, which it held spreaded threateningly to the sides, looked like lighting bolts, and it had crooked, uneven spikes on it's back. Electricity buzzed between the blades of its wings, its scales giving off a faint glow. The three growled, crouching down into an attack position as they inched closer.

I on the other hand, slowly backed away, hands up in surrender.

I let out a nervous chuckle, saying, "Uh, I don't suppose you could just, let me go without being ripped apart, could you?" This was answered by the red one opening its fang filled mouth, fire spewing out at me. With a loud, frightened scream, I turned and ran. The dragons followed, trying to hit me with a barrage of flames, water, and electricity.

As I ran, one of the flames lit the side of my left arm, singing the hair and burning the skin. I patted it down as fast as possible, wincing in pain as I did so. Glancing up again, I noticed a mountainous region up ahead of me. A good place to lose them.

So, speeding up as much as I could, I darted towards the mountains, rounding the nearest corner when I came to it. I kept running, knowing that a simple turn wouldn't trick the elemental reptiles. It took a while, with a lot of twists and turns in the rocky labyrinth, but I finally lost them. Yet just in case, I decided to hide in a cave for a bit.

I walked in though the small mouth of one cave and made my way deeper into the dark hole. Inside, there was a cavern, much bigger than the entrance, lit by glowing vines and mushrooms that hung from the walls.
I headed to the cave wall, leaning against it and letting myself slide into a sitting position. I breathed a sigh of relief, happy to have gotten away from what seemed like my doom, before bringing my attention to my burnt arm. The skin was a mix of red and little bits of black, beginning to swell and blister in some places. The burn ran from my elbow to close to my wrist, so it was far too big to treat with the bandages I had in my pocket.

Suddenly, I heard movement in another part of the cave, stealing my attention away from the wound. I saw a shadow speedily retreat behind a small group of rocks, making more noise. Slowly, I got to my feet, backing away from the spot. The last thing I needed was another creature out to kill me. But I tripped, falling backwards and hitting my head on the stone floor. I silently criticized my clumsiness before temporarily blacking out.

When I came to, I spotted a figure standing overhead of me. A non human figure. I screamed in response, quickly sitting up and pushing myself back. The creature responded similarly, jumping back with a growlish yelp.

"Don't hurt me!" it cried. Then I was confused. Me, hurt it? It was bigger than me, and probably more powerful. Taking a closer look, I saw that the creature was another dragon, with fire red scales and large, leathery wings fastened to it's back. But this one was smaller than the water and fire dragons, only around six feet tall.

It stood on it's hind legs, hands held up in surrender and wings tightly closed to it's back. Slowly, carefully, I got to my feet, eyes trained on the dragon the whole time. It made no move to hurt me. Instead, it backed away, fear shining in it's eyes.

"H-hurt you?" I asked.

"Yeah. You're a human, aren't you?" it asked back, nervousness and fear in its quivering voice.

"Yes," I answered.

"Then why haven't you attacked me yet?" It stared at me, expectant for an answer. I stared back at it in bewilderment. It really expected me to hurt it.

"Because, you're a dragon," I replied, "and three dragons tried killing me a few minutes ago."

"So, you're not going to hurt me?"

"No." It gave a relieved sigh, letting itself drop down to all fours. Its wings loosened, and its tail flicked back and forth in curiosity. It walked up to me, and I braced for an attack. But instead, it held a clawed, what could be called a hand, to me.

"My name's Zuco, nice to, uh, meet you," it said unsurely. Hesitantly, I grabbed it, shaking it like I would a person's.

"Yeah, I'm Luke." The two of us stood in awkward silence for a while, before I asked, "So why didn't you try to kill me like the others?"

"Well," it, or he, said, "humans are feared in this land. We try to keep them out, so it's strange to see a human here at all. Speaking of which, how did you get here? Humans haven't found magic again, have they?" Humans, a threat? Us discovering magic...again? These questions hung in my mind, and I wondered what he had meant. Have people been to this world before? Did some know about magic? Were they really a threat to these creatures?

Then I went back to what Zuco had asked me. Truthfully, I had no clue how I got there. All I knew was that I fell in a hole, followed a path, and was sucked through a portal of some sort by black tentacles. Nothing else. I didn't even know where I was then either.

"No...not that I know of," I said.

"So how did you get here?" he asked. So I attempted to explain, getting a surprised look from him. "Wait, you came through the Plane's Pass? When?"

"Today, I guess," I said, not perfectly sure if we were speaking of the same thing. "Um, what is the Plane's Pass exactly?"

"A portal between the Earth plane and the Mythania plane," Zuco explained. I cocked my head to the side.

"What?"

"Well," he began, "Mythania is a second plane of existence to earth. But if you came from there today, then how'd you-" However, he was cut off by a loud boom, similar to that of an explosion, that rattled the cave. Loose stones from the ceiling fell onto us, like small bullets raining down from the world above. One stone in particular, a generally large one, hit my left arm right on the burn.

"Ow!" I hissed in pain, only to be silenced by Zuco's 'hand' being placed over my mouth. He shushed me, worried eyes moving to the mouth of the cave. We both watched in suspense as three figures appeared.

"We know you're in there human!" one said in a deep, slightly growly voice.

"Yeah, come out if ya don't want ta die!" Screeched another in a higher pitched voice. "Wait, I mean, come out if you don't want to die slowly and painfully. We're still gonna kill ya!"

"You two know it won't come out, right?" Asked the third, voice calm and smooth. "Humans may not be too bright but they're not that dull."

"Then let's blow em up!" the high pitched one suggested.

"Alright," agreed the first. Zuco growled quietly next to me as he stared at the figures.

"We have to run," he said quietly.

"Run? Where?!" I whispered back. He pointed towards the entrance, blocked by the three creatures. "What?! How can we get past them?!"

"Like this." He grabbed onto my shirt with his teeth and threw me onto his back. Before I could say anything against it, he bolted forwards, right towards the three figures.

They obviously noticed, the small one with the high voice screaming, "Hey, there's the human! And he's with a dragon!" Yet they didn't have time to do anything about it, for Zuco shot fire out at them, blocking their view, and scaled over them in a single leap. He landed roughly on all fours as I was thrown off, letting out a cry of pain on contact with the ground.

But I didn't get a moment's rest as Zuco rushed back to me, pulling me to my feet and signaling me to follow. I obliged, seeing that the three figures, the same dragons that had tried killing me before, had recovered from the shock and were charging at us.

"Hey, get back here you runts!" yelled the fire dragon in his rough voice. He began to shoot flames out at us, luckily missing. As we got further, the three began falling behind. A minute after losing sight of them, I slowed, panting.
"I think...we lost them," I said between breaths. Zuco skidded to a halt, running back to me.

"Are you sure?" he asked. "I know those three, and I know that they're much faster than me." My eyes scanned the world around us, looking for any sign of the three. Still, there was nothing but forest on all sides.

"Yeah," I verified. I began to walk in the direction opposite to which we had come, when something swung down in front of me from the trees, startling me.

"Might wanna rethink that," said the electric dragon, snickering at my fear. I back away as he crawled down onto the ground in front of me, creeping closer. As soon as I got the chance, I turned to run, only to bump into Zuco.

Angrily, I shouted, "What are you doing?! We need to run!" He looked back at me and growled, gesturing to in front of him. There, blocking the path, where the fire and water dragon, closing in on us. "Oh." I looked between them, trying to find an opening. Luckily, the fire and water dragons were a bit farther from the electric one, leaving a big space on either side. As fast as I could, I took off in between them, ducking as the electric one tried to grab me.

"The human's getting away!" cried the fire one angrily. "After him!" Completely ignoring Zuco, they started after me, chasing me through the seemingly endless maze of trees. Zuco followed, but I didn't know why. Why would he care if I was killed or not? He said that most creatures feared or hated humans, so why didn't he?

Again, the dragons disappeared behind me, but this time, I knew better than to stop. With all my might, I pushed onwards, until I came to a clearing. Except, this clearing led straight to a cliff. I turned back to run, but something rustled from within the trees. I backed away, coming dangerously close to the cliff's edge. The rustling grew louder, until a fire red dragon jumped out. I braced myself for the burning flames to push me off the cliff, but nothing came. Opening my eyes, I realized who was standing there.

"Zuco?" I asked, unsure. He nodded, staring back into the trees.

Looking back to me, he said, "We have to get out of here before they get back."
"Or what, you'll both die?" Both of us turned to see the fire dragon, along with the other two, walking slowly towards us from the edge of the clearing. I tried backing away, but my foot hit the edge of the cliff, slipping slightly.

My fear changing to anger, I asked, "Who are you, and what do you want with me?" I hoped that them talking would give me time to come up with an idea.

"Well, since we're going to kill you anyways, might as well tell you," said the fire dragon. "I'm Scorch." He gestured to the electric dragon, "That's Spark," then the water, "and that's Jet. And for what we want? We want you dead, you filthy human." Then he looked up at Zuco. "And your friend here will die too, for helping you." They closed in, growling.

"Don't worry," said Spark happily, a sick grin on his face. "It'll all be over soon. The pain will just, fly away." Fly? Wait, fly! That's it! I turned to Zuco, who had his eyes trained fearfully on the three, looking unsure as to what to do. He had wings. He could just fly us out of here. I didn't think he realized it, however, and I knew telling him would get us killed sooner, so I backed towards the three hunting us.

They stopped, confused, Spark asking, "What's he doin?" I ignored them, running at Zuco.

His eyes widened, and he asked, "What are you-" He didn't finish though, for I slammed into him, sending us careening off the cliff. The three other dragons watched us with amusement before walking away.

They're not too bright, I thought with a smirk, before looking to Zuco. He was staring worriedly at the world below us, visibly panicking. But he didn't open his wings. Surely he should've started flying by now?

"Zuco! Fly!" I shouted out to remind him.

"I can't!" he shouted back, looking at me worriedly.

"Can't what?!" I asked. What can't he do that's keeping him from flying us out of this mess.

"Fly! I can't fly!" he cried. Oh shoot, I thought, looking down. We were seconds from the ground, and frightenedly I braced for impact. Then I felt Zuco grab on to me and curl around me, as it to protect me, before we met with the hard, stony earth.
