Stream of Dreams
"He ran off again..." I sighed.
"He does it so the sadness doesn't overwhelm other creatures nearby."
"Oh..." That explains a lot. I felt bad for him. I wonder if there was any way to make him happy again. Could the sadness be washed away?
"Is it possible to get rid of his sadness?"
Lilith rustled her leaves as if to shrug.
"I don't think anyone's ever tried."
What a shame. I thought looking down at the burning tree. This tree walker did. At some point.
"What about her?" I asked, gesturing towards the blackened tree. The smoke had dissipated since Yoongi had wandered off.
"Chakri...wasn't able to rid him of his sadness."
That's so sad. How could I train him if he was too overwhelmed by sadness and despair? I have to find a way.
"Lilith?"
"Yes, little one."
"My name is Jinx, I'm sorry I didn't introduce myself. My manners had escaped me out of pure curiosity."
She just laughed at me, giving me a slight squeeze with her branches.
"I feel that you are going to be the light we have all been searching for."
That made me feel like a heavy weight was laid on my shoulders. I had to find a way to cure someone of sadness before I could train him for his greater purpose.
I must of dozed off, the sound of Lilith's soft motherly voice startled me.
"He's back."
Poking my head over her branches, I saw him. He was sitting in the center of the tree with his tails wrapped around him protectively. Yoongi appeared to be lost in thought.
"Go talk to him."
I nodded, carefully climbing down out of her branches. Silently I crept up to where he sat.
"Go away." He mumbled. Shock washed over me at the sadness in his tone.
"How did you see me?"
Yoongi rolled his eyes, pointing a black paw at me.
"You stick out in the dark. You are bright as light and white as snow."
"Oh, right..." my tails swished behind me, fanning my embarrassment. Of course he would see me.
"Go away..." he said again. However, I was determined.
"Look-"
"GO AWAY!" He bellowed with so much agony. It was almost as if he didn't want me to. But he needed me to.
There had to be a way. I'm going to find it.
I looked towards Lilith who watched me carefully. I smiled at her then took off into the underbrush. I needed to be near the meadow.
That's when the whispering started again.
Danger... Run little fox... Danger.
They sounded like they were screaming but it was thousands of whispers all at once.
Lightning split open the sky, followed closely by boisterous thunder that cracked the nearest tree. The whispers grew more panicked, pleading with me to run.
Run little fox!!!
So I did. Right smack into a Pen.
I froze. The whispers had gasped in horror, then fell silent. A terrible gut wrenching smell invaded my nostrils. It reminded me of the brimstone at the base of hell. Mixed with the land of the dead. That's an awful place. The only reason I went there is because an undead tried to steal a wish light.
I'll explain that later.
It's body flickered with the light, smoke taking over In some places. The solid part I had run into was now smoke, whereas it's torso was now solid. The grayish black scales and the dried blood smeared across them had my stomach turning in knots.
I need to run. Could Lilith save me? No...
"I will rip you to shreds." It hissed, once again the smell singed my nose.
"Run!" Called a voice behind me. Where am I supposed to run? Don't these things vanish and appear wherever super fast? Panic rose in my chest as the fear took over.
"Run!!" The voice screamed more urgently. I jumped to the side just in time to avoid the Pen's jagged claws. I yelped, running as fast as I could; instantly reminded of the pain I still had.
I could hear the tree limbs snapping behind me, and a steady low voice that told me to keep running.
"Keep running! Don't stop until you get to the stream of dreams!"
My paws padded hard against the dry leaves and dirt beneath them, my breath was ragged. I don't recall ever having to run for my life before. So much pain, white light began to take over my vision as I rounded an oak tree, falling face first into a stream.
When I fell in it was nothing like falling into water. I landed softly in a field of tall grass. In the distance I could see little children laughing and playing. Amongst them was the Sunshine god, or at least I think that was him. He was practically glowing with his radiant smile. His laughter filled the air with a harmonious joy that made your heart dance.
One of the little boys stood out to me. He reminded me of Yoongi. His pale skin and pitch black hair, that gummy smile Lilith spoke of. It had to be him. He looked so very happy. Was this his dream? Is this what he dreams when he sleeps?
I felt someone pull me out of the stream, the feeling of joy washing away as I came up.
"Are you okay?" I wasn't expecting him to be standing behind me, let alone the one pulling me out of the stream of dreams. When I looked at him, his eyes were full of worry.
"Did it hurt you? I heard you yelp."
I just stared at him. His worried expression faded to a grumpy one once more.
"You really are daft."
Yoongi grumbled, turning to take off into the forest.
"I'm fine. Just an old injury."
He stopped for a second, glancing back at me.
"How did you lose your tail?"
I stared at the ground, I was too embarrassed to tell him the truth.
"I see, well watch out for the Pen. That one isn't so bad but the one with a white scar across its chest... yea, you want to avoid that one at all costs."
With that he took off.
"Oh fiddlesticks... I'm never going to be able to train him if he keeps taking off like that."
I sighed heavily, a small ache where my tail used to be reminded me I didn't have a choice. Turning around to look at the curious stream where instead of water there were puffy clouds that floated along. Each one had a different dream showing. Some looked happy, while others were filled with loneliness. Were these just dreams of the creatures within the Mystic Forest, or were these people in the village?
My heart leapt in my chest. Maybe I could find Jimin and little Jae! AW that would be so wonderful! I miss them dearly.
If only... I laid there at the edge of the steady stream watching, hoping to see them. But, their dreams never came. Sadness filled my heart. Part of me feels like I'll never see them again.
A flash of white caught my eye in one of the dreams. In that dream was like deja vu. However from someone else's point of view. There I was running faster than I ever thought possible, with Yoongi close behind. He would dart from side to side confusing the Pen until it looked like it gave up.
It completely vanished. Then there it was again. Lashing out it's nasty claws at Yoongi, knocking him straight into a tree. Why hadn't I heard that? Or was this just part of his dream?
Whether it was or not. I had to be sure he was okay. With my heart racing I dashed into the forest to find him.
