Lydia and Dave talk and joke around during their lunch. Lydia is laughing by the time they return back to the estate, the place that feels like home to her now. She's going to miss living here.

Dave catches her sad expression, "Hey, why the long face? I thought you were having fun?"

"I was, it was wonderful, thank you Dave." Lydia hesitates, but decides to tell him. "It's just that the estate has come to feel like a home for me. It will be hard to leave it when you get married."

Dave freezes, all laughter and fun from earlier forgotten by her words. "What do you mean? This is your home for as long as you wish it. Why would that change if I get married?"

Lydia gives him a rather wistful look, "You won't find a woman willing to have me in the house. I won't come between you and whoever you marry. I am a nobody, no name, no memory, nothing, you've been beyond generous to me and I can't repay that by keeping you from finding someone for you to love and marry."

Dave shakes his head, "That's not how it's going to work, Lydia. I won't marry anyone that isn't generous of heart enough to accept you as part of the family. What's even more important, neither will my men. I told you before, my men are more loyal to you than they are to me at this point, should I marry someone that won't accept you, they won't accept her and she would be in danger. She'd be in danger not just from my enemies, but my men as well. I won't do that to any female."

"What if you find your fiancee and she doesn't like me?" Lydia asks in the silence.

"Ah, well then I won't have a choice, but it will put her life in danger. However, if she is still alive I don't think she'd begrudge you being here. The girl I remember has a very loving personality."

This makes Lydia cry, "Perhaps before she was taken. You've tortured people, Dave, but you have no idea what years of torture can do to a person. How it can destroy-for you both I hope that she was able to escape that and she was able to find safety."

"No matter what happens in the next year, Lydia, you will always have a home here. I want you to know that." Dave says ending that discussion.

Lydia tries to give him a smile, "Or at least until you and your men get tired of having to protect someone so useless as me."

"You're not useless and my men fight over the chance to guard you everyday. I don't see that changing any time soon." Dave pulls her into his arms and holds her as she cries, letting out her deepest fears. She doesn't want to leave the estate and although she knows that Dave doesn't feel the same, she doesn't want to leave him either.

"Come, I got you a birthday present. Something to wear to the party tonight." Dave says softly holding Lydia back a little.

"You're spoiling me, Dave. You don't need to." Lydia says sniffing back her tears.

"Yes, I do. The men all got you gifts as well. Today is your day, since we don't know your birthday. It's similar to a gotcha day for those that adopted a child." Dave says and guides Lydia inside.

"Come on, your gift is on your bed," Dave says more than a little excited. He hopes that she will like the dress he got her.

Dave stands back and watches Lydia. She's talking and laughing with his men and some of their wives. Some of their older children are there as well. All around it seems that Lydia is having a good time.

It's about time for the cake and then the gifts. Dave moves away from the wall. He pulls Lydia away from the others.

"Is something wrong, Dave?" Lydia asks him confusion evident on her face.

Dave chuckles, "No, chiquita, I just wanted to make sure that you are enjoying yourself."

Lydia's face turns from confused to animated, "Very much so. Thank you for everything today, Dave."

Dave smiles back at her, "I will accept the thanks for earlier and the gift that you are wearing, but this party, I can't take credit for. Thank Reed and Zackary for this, they planned everything."

"Then I'll-" suddenly the music and lights cut out. Dave stiffens and lets out a few colorful words.

"Can you take me to my study?" Dave demands. There is not enough light for him to see. But he can hear his men working without panic on getting their families to safety. Now it's up to him to get Lydia to safety and help his men.

"Yes, of course. Take my hand." Lydia had long ago memorized the layout of the house. She is able to take Dave out of the room they were in and to his study in very short order.

"What's going on, Dave?" Lydia concentrates on the task Dave had given her.

"We're under attack, although so far they haven't started shooting." Just then Lydia opens the door to the study.

"Thank you, now can you take me to the back wall, third bookcase?" Dave asks and without comment Lydia leads him to where he requested.

Dave finds the proper book and activates the switch. The door locks behind him even as a new door opens before him. "Now Lydia, I know you've never been inside the passage way, but I've only ever been in it with light. Can you find me the third corridor on the right? Once we find that I need you to take me down that corridor and the third door on the left. Can you do that?"

"Y-yes, are there any things I need to worry about?" If there aren't then it will be a piece of cake for her.

Dave frowns even as his lips press down in anger, "No, these are emergency corridors and if they are needed then we need to get from one location to another fast."

"Like now," Lydia says under her breath even as she is guiding Dave.

Dave stops her before she opens the door. "Stay here."

"Uh, no. You go into a dark room without me and you might get stuck." Lydia doesn't know where the gall to speak to Dave like that comes from. For the first time since she came here she feels useful and she's enjoying it.

"It's the armory, I know my way around even without light." Dave says exasperatedly.

Lydia lets go of his arm with those words, she's never been inside and if Dave says that he can find his way around then who is she to say otherwise?

She hears him gathering several things but has no idea what exactly. Suddenly she feels him next to her once more.

"Okay, now I need the fourth door from this on the left." Dave whispers next to her ear. Lydia figures that if he's whispering there must be a reason so she does her best to move silently and can barely hear Dave moving by her side.

She stops and stops Dave at the requested door. Dave hands her a gun and a knife and whispers in her ear to stay there. He listens then silently opens the door throwing in a flash/bang grenade.

What he sees makes him furious, his man is down, either dead or dying and three strangers chatting away. During their disorientation from the grenade he fires his gun killing all three. He then makes his way over to the control panel and finds the keyboard.

He smiles darkly at what he's about to do. At his command doors lock cutting off the attackers from each other. As the rooms are cut off he gives the rooms light allowing his men to come out and deal with the intruders with greater safety. He smiles even more to see the pain the sudden light brings those that are wearing night vision goggles.

He makes sure that the rooms are being cleared before he opens the doors to the hall. He keeps his eyes on the intruders in the hall.  There is one heading his way. He can't take the chance that he'll get inside.

He releases the lock on his door and exits the room.

Lydia no longer hears sounds from inside the room. "Dave?" She says nervously and enters the room. She can smell blood and a lot of it. She freezes. Memories of her time with the Italians overcoming her.

That's where Dave finds her after he's done killing the intruders. "Oh, shit, Lydia, you weren't supposed to come in here."

"Dave?" Lydia says her voice breaking down and sounding like a child. Dave immediately goes to her.

He takes off his blood splattered jacket and wraps it around her, "Shh, it's okay chiquita. Come with me, it's safe now."

Dave leads her out of the control room and through the now cleared halls. He does his best to avoid the dead and the blood.

"Are a lot of our people dead?" Lydia asks tears already falling.

"No, chiquita, only those in the control room and the guards out on the yard, but I don't know if any of them are still alive. Reed will check them once we make sure that all the damn fools are dead."

Lydia freezes up once more, "You don't know?"

By now they've entered the kitchen, "This part of the house has been cleared." Dave reassures her. He gets her a glass of water and Lydia thankfully drinks it.

Before she finishes she hears footsteps she's not familiar with and hears a soft voice say, "Target acquired." Then she feels a burning pain in her head and that's all.

Dave hears the report of the gun and fires his own even as the guy reports that the target is down. Only then does he look at Lydia. She's down on the ground and blood coming from a bullet wound in the head.

Dave drops everything and checks Lydia, tears streaming down his face. He should have had the house cleared first. He finds a pulse and then checks the profusely bleeding head wound and notices that it's just a graze and he collapses. He puts pressure on the wound and calls for the doctor.
