Eve and Dave settle into an uneasy silence. There had been so much hurt that Dave isn't sure what to say and now isn't the time to bring it up.
When Sergio is brought to their table Dave is very relieved although Sergio is late.
Which is what Eve says when the maitre d' leaves.
"You're late, not a good practice," Eve says flatly. She's still mostly hidden by the laptop and so Sergio can't see her.
Sergio bristles at her words and tone. "There was an accident a couple of blocks away. I ended up walking to get here. Please forgive the delay."
Eve had already found the report of the accident and so nods. Dave hides his amused smile.
"Eve, you need to be nice," Dave says and goes to her side and helps her up.
"Sergio, this is Eve, the woman your men met this afternoon." Sergio feels like he's just had the breath knocked out of him. His men had told him that she was blind and pretty, but their words didn't do her justice.
"Eve, this is Sergio, Riley's boss." Dave is pleased by Sergio's reaction.
Everybody sits and Dave helps Eve scoot in a bit to the table. "Thank you, Dave. Now you better explain to Sergio why I'm here and with my laptop before more damage is done. The more damage the longer it will take me to fix it."
With those words Sergio takes his eyes off Eve and turns them onto Dave. "When Eve went job hunting earlier today, before the incident at the electronics store, she applied to one of your companies and because she was blind she was turned down. Eve didn't think that was fair. She is one of the most highly qualified IT people I know and would have been an asset to your company."
"So, why is she here and needing her computer?" Sergio demands more than a little intrigued in spite of himself.
"Because in revenge she sent a worm to your company and several others that denied her based on her disability. Even as we speak the worm is destroying the information in your company." Dave finally spits it out.
Sergio looks like he wants to laugh. He goes to say something when he gets a phone call. More than a little irritated he answers the call, "I told you not to bother me. I'm talking to Dave Tuelleries and Eve now."
As Sergio listens to who ever is on the line his face holds disbelief and then settles into anger. He hangs up and turns his full attention to Eve. "Can you reverse the loss?"
"Yes, I've already sent out the command to destroy the worm. I've been working on retrieving the lost data." Eve says calmly even as her fingers fly along the keyboard giving one command after another.
Silence falls at the table until the server comes to take their order. The two men give their order and Eve just ignores him and continues doing her job.
"When Riley came back and told me that some blind bitch dared to claim territory here and send him off with a warning and a gun to his face, I thought he was a liar. When you called me to talk to me about the incident I still didn't think anything of it.
"But this, this is serious. Did she really kill two men and then threaten mine?" Sergio still can't reconcile the blind beauty in front of him to the description of the female before.
Dave pulls up the footage on his phone. "I'm told the footage of her actually dealing with the two idiots was already destroyed so neither of us gets to see that, but this will show the interaction between your men and Eve here."
Sergio watches the clip in silence.
The food is brought and as they eat they make small talk. Eve ignores them both.
"Done," Eve says sitting back and shaking her hands out they are starting to ache with how fast she worked and much she had to do. "You really should tell your personnel department to not dismiss someone just because they have a disability. At the time I sent this I didn't know that company belonged to you. If I had, I would have found a different way to show my disfavor of their actions. Perhaps by bringing legal action against them. I do apologize for the inconvenience."
Sergio had nearly choked when she said that she might have brought legal action against his company instead of this had she known it belonged to him.
"You truly are a vindictive little witch aren't you?" Sergio says with venom and narrowed eyes.
Dave tenses at the insult, not so much because it's an insult, it is the truth after all, but because of what Eve might do.
"You, Sergio, are an irresponsible pig. You know nothing of my life or what has made me this way. You have worked hard in your mafia true, but, you have done nothing on your own. You've never had to deal with a disability or be hunted from a small child. You haven't had hell day in and day out for more than eight years.
"You have no idea just how fucking vindictive I can be.
"I became the hunter of those that thought I was their prey. The Italian mafia is destroyed because of what they did to me.
"I'm not done hunting down the rest of those that betrayed me and put me into that living hell. But when I find them you will be thanking the heavens above that you aren't them because everything I suffered for those long, dark years will be inflicted on them. The pain, the humiliation, the scars from the knife wounds, the broken bones, the whippings. The threat of rape and death will be whispered to them daily even as the sounds of rape are next to them. They will be starved and given to eat something that makes them nearly die.
"That sir, is what my vindictive side will inflict."
Eve has to force herself to calm down and bring her breathing under control.
"My apologies, Miss Eve. I had no idea, you are right. If you ever need any help in finding those that inflicted that on you let me know." Sergio says absolutely white at the description of what she went through.
Eve nods to him not sure that she can speak just yet. Her emotions are still so strung out.
"I'm sorry too, Eve. You've never talked to me about it." Now there is definite hurt in his voice.
"My nightmares are my own, Dave. I didn't see the need to share until I was sure that I could trust you."
With that Dave retreats and lets her calm down. "I'm sorry gentlemen, but I need to retire now. I hope that you won't hold anything that has passed today against Dave."
"Of course not, Miss Eve. My men tell me that he is your ex, mind telling me why you broke up?"
"Ask the asshole," Eve says angrily and snaps shut her laptop and prepares to get up.
"Hold up, Eve. I'll escort you back to your room." Dave just sets his hand lightly on her arm allowing her to decide whether to allow it or not.
When Eve allows it he turns his attention to Sergio, "The Italians manage to capture Eve. I didn't listen to her and because of that several of my men were killed trying to defend her.
"She managed to evade them long enough to set some of the indoor defenses on and sent me the alarm, but we got there far too late.
"Eve has a tracker in her and I was able to follow her to where they were taking her but I only had two of my men. The rest were saving those they could and working on clean up. One of the men was a traitor.
"I knew he was but I wasn't sure if the other was or not. He wasn't.
"The traitor I let live if he took me in as his prisoner. I was going in as a distraction to keep the Italians from harming her anymore than she already has been.
"It worked too.
"The idiots never looked for weapons on Eve. When she heard me taken as prisoner and what they were doing to me, she made a plan on how to escape and gain my freedom and a bit of vengeance all at the same time.
"The Italian boss asked the traitor what he wanted as a reward. He asked for Eve. The boss agreed after a bit of me convincing him.
"The traitor was supposed to get Eve out of there before my men attacked. Eve had other ideas." Eve just rolls her eyes as Dave relishes telling Sergio about that night.
"Okay, but I still don't see why you broke up with him?" Sergio says when Dave finishes.
"Because that ass went to his hotel instead of home. He went to his club and picked up some lonesome female and took her back to his bed and spent the night having fun with her. Does that explain why I broke up with him?" Eve demands Sergio.
Sergio nods and turns his face back to Dave, "You fucking cheated on her after all that? How did she not kill you?"
"There are different kinds of death, Sergio. She gave me back the engagement ring and came here to Seattle.
"She had managed to fool my man and so I had no idea where she even was until she decided to check into my hotel here. I've been going insane with worry about her until my men could get here and protect her."
"Dave, I never thought I'd say this, but you are a fucking fool. You found yourself an incredible woman. Do whatever you have to to regain her love. She's the kind of woman all mafia leaders dream of having at their side. The meek ones are the ones that aren't worth fighting for. She is."
"I realize that, all of that. She's finally agreed to talk to me after this dinner." Dave says unable to look up because he didn't want Sergio to see the tears.
"I have to say, I understand why Riley was so turned on by her. I'll warn my men off. That neighborhood is yours. I have no doubt that you'll take good care of it, Eve." Sergio says and gives his good nights to them both.
"Take me back to my room, please, Dave?" Eve says exhausted and needing to find refuge.
Without another word Dave stands up and assists her and takes her things, stopping only long enough to leave a generous tip.
