Chapter 16

It's been a while guys. I'm so sorry for the long wait, but I'm back with more exciting updates, please stay tuned!

Michael had never seen Jessie more relaxed before this. He watched her cuddle with her sister on the couch. Michael had earlier told Jessie to go upstairs to her room and take better rest, but Jessie refused. She insisted on waiting for the other Angels to return home.  Michael had the urge to sit next to Jessie and wrap his arms around her and her sister, but he refrained from doing that and just stared at them.

An hour later, the entire family returned in one piece, which made Michael sigh in relief. "Welcome back," he said to them.

The sound of their voices woke up Jessie, who had fallen asleep. She stood up with a smile.  "I'm glad you guys are back. I'm truly grateful for what you all did for me. Because of all of you, I have my sister here with me."

"Jessie, you don't have to thank us," Elena said, moving forward and placing her hand on Jessie's shoulder. "We are family, and we protect our own."

Jessie watched how Elena looked at everyone with a smile before her eyes settled on Michael. She noticed a silent exchange of dialogue between the two, but she didn't understand anything. So, she shrugged it off.

"Why don't you take your sister upstairs so that she can take appropriate rest?" Elena suggested.

"Okay," Jessie said as she picked up her sister from the couch and headed upstairs to her room.

"Michael," Raguel called out

Michael didn't even hear his name because his entire focus was centered on Jessie, who was heading up the stairs.

"Michael!" Raguel called out again.

"What?" Michael gave his full attention to Raguel.

"We need to talk," Raguel said.

"I'm out of here," Elena announced, and she hurried out of the living room.

The rest of the family didn't waste any time sitting in the living room, and straightway went from there, leaving Raguel and Michael alone.

"Sit down," Raguel said

Michael quietly obeyed because he knew what was coming next.

Raguel paced around instead of taking a seat next to Michael, which made Michael a little nervous. Michael knew Elena promised not to say anything to Raguel, but that didn't help him calm his nerves.

"What the hell were you thinking?" Raguel whispered because he knew a child, who needed rest, was upstairs. "Why did you leave without us?"

"I'm sorry," Michael said softly.

"Sorry? What if something were to happen to you before we got there? You were upstairs one minute, and the next minute, Elena came down and told us that you were gone. Why did you put your life at risk like that?" Raguel requested softly as he ultimately sat next to Michael.

"Jessie needed our help," Michael said.

"I'm pleased to hear you say 'our' help because that's what we were going to render to her before you left on your own."

"I was truly concerned about her," Michael murmured.

Raguel sighed. "Is she worth losing your life?"

"Yes. She's worth it," he answered without hesitation.

Raguel stared at Michael as if he had grown two heads. "I simply don't understand you. But I'm glad you were not hurt when we found you.” He rested his back on the couch and took a deep breath.

"What happened to that demon in the basement?" Michael asked.

"When he led us to the demon zone, he pleaded for his life and begged us to let him go."

"And you did?"

"Yes, we did let him go,” Raguel said

"I'm sure he will be dead by now because it will be obvious to the other demons that he led us to them," Michael said.

"I don't think so," Raguel said.

 "Why?"

"The demon refused to enter the demon zone when we landed. After pleading for his life, he said he was going into exile since the other demons will kill him for leading us there.”

"Do you think it's wise to let a demon roam freely on earth?" Michael asked.

"I have some Angels watching him, making sure he does not cause harm to anybody."

"That's good, Michael said.

"I will go upstairs now," Raguel said as he stood up.

Michael nodded his head and watched Raguel head upstairs.  He sighed as he rested his lower back on the sofa. His thoughts drifted to the time he had his lips on Jessie's neck. 'How will it feel if I kiss her lips?’ Michael thought to himself, which sent a shiver down his spine. He smiled extensively at his thought.

A few minutes later, he heard footsteps, which made him glimpse up. He watched Jessie as she made her way to the kitchen. He stood up straight away and followed her to the kitchen. Michael watched as Jessie moved around, still unaware of his presence. He watched as she poured herself a glass of water and gulped it.

Jessie was so engrossed in her thoughts that she didn't even look where she was going until she ran into Michael, who was leaning at the entrance of the kitchen door. She looked up and saw Michael smiling at her. She tried to move a little since she was in Michael's space, but he held her back.

"Hi," he whispered.

Jessie's legs almost lost their balance. If not for the stronghold Michael had on her, she could have fallen. She could feel his breath on her skin. They were so close that if she moved an inch closer to him, their lips would meet. Jessie swallowed hard as she tried to focus her eyes on Michael's face instead of fantasizing about his lips.

"I came to get water," Jessie said as she tried to break away from Michael, but he wasn't letting her go. "You saw me with the water, right?" she muttered. Jessie softly cursed as she battled to shape a sentence. The proximity between them was making it difficult for her to think properly.

"Are you okay?" Michael asked gently.

'How can I be when all I want to do is to kiss you right now?’ Jessie thought to herself.

"Yes, I'm fine," she finally answered.

Michael smiled as he used his fingers to push back the hair that was slightly covering her face. "You are beautiful," he murmured, leaning closer to her.

Jessie's heart was beating very fast because of what Michael said. 'What the hell does he think he's doing?' she asked herself. She watched Michael's eyes as they roamed around her face before they settled on her lips, which made her breath hitch in her throat. 'Is he going to kiss me?' She saw Michael lean closer, which caused her to part her lips slightly.

Michael glanced at her briefly before his eyes returned to her lips. However, before he could make another move, they heard footsteps coming, which caused them to separate from each other. They flipped to see Elena staring at them. Michael smiled softly at Elena before he left the kitchen.

Jessie expected Elena to lecture her about Michael having a soulmate somewhere; however, Elena just smiled widely at her, which confused her greatly.

"Hey, would you join me in preparing dinner?” Elena asked, pulling Jessie out of her thoughts.

 "Sure."

When they were making dinner, Jessie expected Elena to bring up what happened between herself and Michael because she was positive Elena saw them, but instead, Elena brought up a random topic which they talked about.

The almost kiss Michael had with Jessie played in his mind as he made his way up the stairs to look for Raguel. He stopped when he heard a whimper coming from Jessie's room. He quietly pushed the door open and saw Jessie's sister lying on the bed with her eyes soaked in tears. She had a stronghold on the sheet, and she was murmuring things Michael couldn't make sense of. He thought of going downstairs to inform Jessie, but he later decided against it. He knew if Jessie saw her sister in the position she was, it was going to leave her heartbroken.

Michael tiptoed to the mattress and tapped her gently. However, she jumped out of bed and landed on the ground.

"Are you okay?" Michael asked as he attempted to move closer to Jessie's sister, who moved backward immediately. He took another step. "I'm not going to hurt you. I'm your sister's friend," he said as he tried to convince the little girl that he was not going to harm her. "Do you remember me being there when you were rescued?"

Sunshine slowly nodded her head as she stood up from the ground, but she still left enough gap between herself and Michael.

"Come and sit down," Michael said and gave her enough room to pass.

Immediately, she sat down. Michael went to stand at the other nook of the room, seeing that Sunshine was not yet comfortable in his presence.

"Where is my sister?" she asked quietly.

"She is helping Elena make dinner. I guess you are hungry, "Michael said.

Sunshine nodded at him. Michael stayed quiet since he didn't know what to say to her.

"What's your name?" Sunshine asked.

 "Michael."

Sunshine nodded her head and remained quiet.

"Were you having a terrible dream? "Michael asked.

Sunshine nodded her head. " I don't want to talk about it," she said quickly.

"Sure. I will head out now, so you can rest." Michael straightened himself as he moved to the door.

"Wait!" Sunshine quickly said, which made Michael stop and turn to look at her. "Stay with me, please," she requested.

Michael smiled softly at her. "Sure," he said as he sat down on the chair that was in the room

"I will go get my sister," Jessie said

 "Okay," Elena replied.

Jessie quickly went to her room. However, when she opened the door, she was surprised to see Michael speaking with her sister.

"Hey," Michael said when he noticed Jessie.

"Hi," Jessie spoke back and entered the room. She sat next to her sister, who wrapped her arms around her.  "How are you?"

"Good," Sunshine answered.

"I'm sure you are hungry," Jessie said, which made Sunshine nod her head. "Let's head downstairs Jessie pulled her sister up with her, which made Michael stand up, and he led the way.

When they arrived downstairs, Sunshine hid behind her sister. Seeing new people she didn't recognize made her very scared.

"It's okay, Sunshine. They are friends," Jessie said softly.

"Family," Michael corrected her as he bent down to Sunshine's height. "We are your family," he said to Sunshine. "We will take care of you and also protect you from the bad guys."

"Promise?" Sunshine said as she held out her hands.

"Promise," Michael said, settling his hand on hers and leading her to the dining table.

Jessie was standing still. She was trying to hold back the tears that were threatening to fall. 'He called us family,' she thought to herself.

"Are you joining us?" Michael pulled Jessie out of her thoughts.

She smiled at him, made her way to the dining table, and sat next to her sister. Everything around her at that moment felt right.
