The wedding
Taylor sighed for the hundredth time at least, looking at herself in the tall mirror. Her dress was being arranged by Suzy, who limped terribly because of an ankle sprain. It was the day, and she felt like something was not right.
“I don't feel beau'iful enough, Sue” Taylor complained.
“Stop tha'! You're gorgeous, Tay'!”
The bride looked at herself once again in the mirror. Her dress was a bright white, lightly tightened right under her breasts, hiding her thin ankles. It had a V-neck collar and transparent long bell sleeves, whose rims were elegantly sewed with lace. Her hair was combed into a long braid, rolled into a large bun on the back of her head, with two wavy locks hanging before her ears. She wore white stilettos with a bridle holding her ankle to the shoe.
The announcement of John and Taylor's wedding was very warmly welcomed. John's bandmates had been invited to his house, they had dinner all together, and before they ate any dessert, they announced it. The three had shouted happily, cheering and hugging the couple. Freddie even shed a tear.
The wedding was a great occasion for Taylor to meet John's mother, Lilian. They spent a weekend together, and in the evening, Lilian even whispered to John that he made the right choice.
As Taylor did not have any family member left, she had nobody to walk her to the altar – though they decided to get married to the city hall only. She could not pick her bridesmaid, Suzy, because of her ankle sprain, and anyway, for Taylor, it was important that the person was a masculine figure. After hours of pondering, she finally chose somebody, and asked this person his agreement: Freddie was glad to walk the bride to the altar.
Suzy carefully arranged Taylor's veil in her hair, covering her face with it. She stepped back and looked at her friend.
“You're stunnin'!”
“I look like a bonkin' meringue!”
“Come on, you look nothin' like a meringue.”
Taylor laughed and hugged her bridesmaid. Suzy raised her thumb and winked.
“I have to go to take care of the guests. Don't worry, everything's fine! I think Freddie's coming soon. Oh, and don't forget your bouquet!”
“I won't forget the bouquet.”
Suzy winked once again and sneaked out of the dressing room. As they did not celebrate their wedding in a church, one of the rooms of the city hall turned into a temporary dressing room for Taylor, two rooms away from where she would get married to John.
She cringed lightly, feeling a sudden pain in her kidneys. She covered the spots with her hands, pulling a face. She heard someone knocking at the door, and she turned round.
“Come in!”
The door slightly squeaked and opened. Freddie's head popped in, and the Parsi was smiling widely at the bride.
“May I come in?”
“Sure, Freddie!”
Freddie smiled and sneaked inside the dressing room, closing the door behind him. He was wearing a black, elegant suit, with a white flower in his buttonhole. He stopped to admire the bride, and a bright grin appeared on his beautiful face.
“Deaky's going to fall in love with you all over again! You look absolutely gorgeous, darling!”
“I feel like he won't like it.”
“Are you kidding me, dear? I swear that John will just fall at your feet!” he said, walking up to her and lightly massaging her shoulders, while looking at her reflection in the mirror. “So, is my favourite bride nervous?”
“I am. But I know that it'll be beautiful. Beyond beautiful. I still can't believe that I'm getting married, you know? Especially with John!”
“Is that a bad thing?”
“Of course not! I'm so in love with him, this is the greatest thing I'll ever do in my life. By the way, did he tell you where he's going to take me to our honeymoon?”
“He did, but it'll be a secret until you get in the limo with him!”
“Tell me!”
“I'm not going to betray my friend, darling!”
They chuckled, and Freddie lightly lifted up her veil to kiss her forehead. They heard the door opening behind them. A very classy Roger appeared, a wide smile on his face. He winked at Taylor.
“Oh, dear, you're lovely! Come on, all the guests are in the room! The wedding march will soon play.”
“Alright, we're getting ready” Freddie smiled, “thanks, Rog!”
“You're welcome.”
Roger closed the door behind him. Taylor cringed, as the pain in her kidneys came back. Freddie noticed it and frowned.
“Darling, are you alright?”
“Oh, yes.”
“It seems like your kidneys hurt...”
“It must be nervous. I guess that my whole body is tensed, and I have cramps. It'll be alright, Freddie, don't worry.”
The singer nodded and they both stood behind the door, waiting for the signal. Taylor's hands were trembling, and Freddie reassured her by holding them. A few seconds later, Brian's voice could be heard in the wedding room, introducing the bride and the groom. Freddie opened the door, and they got out, walking silently in the corridor. He stretched out his arm for her to take; she sneaked hers under it, resting her hand in the crook of his elbow.
Then, the wedding march started. Taylor took a deep breath, and finally, they both appeared at the doors. Everybody spun round and craned their necks to catch a glimpse of the bride. Taylor stared straight before her, with a bright smile.
John was already standing at the altar, with his white suit and a red rose at his buttonhole. His eyes widened, as he had never seen her dress before. Even from where she was walking, she could see tears of joy forming in his eyes, and her heart melted. He was absolutely gorgeous. She still could not believe that it was John, her John, that she was about to marry.
Indeed, it was the greatest choice of her life.
When they reached the altar, Freddie gently took Taylor's hand, then John's, and made them touch, patting them as if they had his blessing. Then, the black-haired singer sneaked on the side of the altar, joining Suzy, while Roger and Brian were standing on John's side.
John sniffed lightly and looked at Taylor with his teary eyes.
“You are perfect, Taylor.”
“You are too, John.”
They smiled at each other, and the mayor came in from a door in front of them. He was holding a small book in his hands, adjusting his glasses on his big nose. He cleared his throat and quickly scratched his chin, before looking at the assembly and smiling.
“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome. We all gathered here today to celebrate the marriage of John Richard Deacon, born on the nineteenth of August nineteen fifty-one, and Taylor Taylor, born on the thirteenth of April nineteen fifty. Three years ago, John and Taylor met in Soho, and their lives changed forever. They took care of each other during all this time, loving each other and making sure that the other is happy. Despite John's busy life with his career, Taylor kept standing beside him, to give him the support he needs. Then, they decided that they would get married. Here they are today, in their most beautiful clothes, with their families and friends, to seal their lives.”
The two lovebirds looked at each other with a wide grin. The clinkings of cameras were sounding in the room. The mayor cleared his throat again, and smiled.
“It is now time for the vows to be pronounced. The bride first.”
Taylor nodded and turned to John. Behind her, Suzy stepped forward, holding a red velvet cushion with John's ring on it, while Roger held this of Taylor behind John. Taylor cleared her throat, feeling tears coming to her eyes.
“I, Taylor Taylor, take you, John Deacon, to be my husband, my partner in life and my one true love. I will cherish our union and love you more each day than I did the day before. I will trust you and respect you, laugh with you and cry with you, loving you faithfully through good times and bad, regardless of the obstacles we may face together. I give you my hand, my heart, and my love, from this day forward for as long as we both shall live.”
She slowly spun round to take John's ring on Suzy's cushion, smiling widely at her bridesmaid. She gently took John's left hand, sliding the ring around his ring finger. She heard sobbings coming from John's mother, and she tenderly stared at Lilian, winking.
Then, John cleared his throat.
“I, John Deacon, take you, Taylor Taylor, to be my beautiful wife, my constant best friend, my faithful partner and my love from this day forward. In the presence of our family and friends, I offer you my solemn vow to be your faithful partner in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad, and in joy as well as in sorrow. I promise to love you unconditionally, to support you in your goals, to honor and respect you, to laugh with you and cry with you, and to cherish you for as long as we both shall live.”
Sniffing lightly, John turned to Roger to take the ring. His bestman proudly patted his shoulder, struggling to hide tears of joy. Just like she did before, John slid the ring to her ring finger, and held her hands tenderly, staring at her.
“I now officially declare you husband and wife. John, you can kiss the bride.”
A wave of cheers sounded in the room, while John removed her wedding veil from her face and tenderly pressed his lips against hers, wrapping his arms around her elegant waist. This time, Roger did not hide his tears and let them freely roll down his cheeks, too busy applauding. Brian was facing the wall, drying his eyes, and Freddie was jumping happily.
Two photographers hired for the wedding knelt on the path to the altar, and took pictures of the newlyweds kissing.
Taylor and John shook the mayor's hand, signing some papers, along with the bridesmaid and the bestman. They waited for everybody to go out. Suzy warmly hugged her childhood friend, kissing her cheeks endlessly.
“Oh, dear, I'm so proud of ya! You're so, so, beau'iful!”
“Thank you, Sue!”
Roger hugged John, patting his shoulders.
“So, you made it, huh? Oh fuck, I'm so happy!”
“It looks like our dear Rog's emotional!” the groom teased.
“Fuck off, Deaky!”
They all laughed, and noticed that everybody was gone. Suzy, Roger, Brian and Freddie went out first, before John and Taylor did.
“I love you, John” she whispered as they made their way outside.
“I love you too, Taylor.”
They shyly smiled at each other, and finally reached the front doors of the city hall. Suddenly, a rain of petals poured all over them. They chuckled, waving at everybody and posing for the four photographers. All the guests gathered on the large stairway, leaving a special space for the newlyweds, their bestmen and the bridesmaid. They sneaked in the crowd, and everybody smiled at the photographers, who immortalised the moment.
After that, Suzy limbed to Taylor and gave her the bouquet. The men stepped aside, and the women gathered. Taylor turned her back to them and threw her bouquet above her shoulder and heard somebody screaming in victory. She spun round and applauded one of John's cousins, who caught the bouquet.
The newlyweds took the time to greet everybody, and the guests came to them to congratulate the couple and wish them a happy life.
Suzy stood at the top of the stairway and shouted.
“Your attention please! We're now moving to the cottage for the buffet! Follow the white limo!”
The guests separated into small groups, agreeing on who would go with who, with whose car. Meanwhile, John, Taylor, Suzy, Freddie, Brian and Roger, walked up to the long limo parked before the city hall. They got in, and the driver closed the doors for them.
They sighed happily, and Brian scratched his curls, smiling at the bride.
“So, Taylor... What is it like to be Mrs Deacon?”
“The best feeling ever! Too bad you can't know that!”
“I didn't want to, anyway. I'm fine with being Mr. May!”
They laughed, and the limo started up, before leaving the city hall. Taylor rested her head on John's shoulder, holding his hands. She was looking out of the window at the same time, but she did not really see the landscapes passing by so quickly. Mrs Deacon... That was it. Bye bye Miss Taylor. Bye bye shitty double name. What a relief! This name that represented so much pain and so many terribly moments she went through was no more. This name that weighed on her shoulders so painfully had vanished.
She was John's wife. John's wife.
A few minutes later, the limo parked in front of a beautiful cottage lost in the countryside. The many cars used by the guests parked everywhere, and some people were already gathered on the small path leading to it. Roger made small jumps to the front doors, unlocking them with the key he kept in his pocket.
Everybody got in, welcomed by Suzy and Roger. Suzy was holding a list with the names of the guest, so she could guide them to their seat. Brian sneaked in with Freddie: Freddie helped Roger collect the gifts and envelopes for the newlyweds, thanking them, and gathering the whole in a room nearby. As for Brian, he was helping the cookers bring the many dishes to the buffet, skilfully avoiding the guests on his way.
When the newlyweds came in, everybody stood up and applauded, shouting their names. They shyly smiled at the assembly, waving and giggling. Suzy brought them to the other edge of the room, where a long table with a white tablecloth was standing. On their way, the two admired the gorgeous decoration.
There were six tables in total: five for the guests, and one for the newlyweds, their bestmen and bridesmaid. They decided that the theme would be travelling around the world. In fact, each table represented one continent, in order. From the right to the left, there were Australia (with a green tablecloth), Asia (with a yellow tablecloth), Europe (with a bright blue tablecloth), Africa (with a brown tablecloth), and America (with a red tablecloth). They pondered for a while about the colours, and they finally decided to trust the five Olympic rings. No more, no less. Then, the last table at the other edge, this of John and Taylor, represented Arctica. It was decorated with small polar bears and tiny icebergs.
The sight of the polar bears made Brian smile, reminding him of the song he wrote when Queen was only Smile.
In the middle of the room, there was a large dancefloor, and in a corner, there were turntables for a disc-jokey they hired, who would arrive later. Along the wall on the left, there was a very long table with a white tablecloth. It was the buffet. They had chosen many different meals: vegetarian salads for Brian, shrimp salads, a huge plate of sushis and makis which formed the logo of Queen, shepherd's pies with potatoes, Vietnamese noodles with vegetables, small meatballs with spagetthis on top, ramekins of mac-and-cheese, cheese on toasts, Greek salads, scrambled eggs, jollof rice with egusi soup, and many more. There even were small bowls of vegetable so people would do their own salad. There was a pile of plates on one side, and a huge pyramis of champagne glasses that waited to be filled before the wedding cake would be cut.
John, Taylor, Freddie, Brian, Roger and Suzy sat at their assigned table. However, the two newlyweds stood up, Taylor holding a microphone in hand. She gently tapped on its top to check the sound and catch everybody's attention.
“Hello everybody, we hope that you're having a good moment with us so far. I would like to thank you on behalf of John and myself for being here today, sharing those wonderful memories with us. I am glad to meet a lot of you, as we didn't have much time to meet in our everyday life! But we'll make up for lost time! I would like to thank the great cookers who imagined this whole buffet, you did a wonderful job, and I can't wait to taste all those delicious things. Of course, I would like to thank Suzy, Brian, Roger and Freddie, who spent a lot of time helping us to organise the wedding and the reception, and who are still working today. I don't know what we'd do without them! Finally, I would like to thank John, my best friend, and now lovely husband, for making this day the most beautiful of my whole life. John, thank you for standing beside me everyday, fulfilling my dreams, and making me the happiest woman on this Earth. I loved you, I love you, and I will love you forever.”
Everybody applauded, with wide grins on their faces. John chuckled and kissed her lips, before taking the microphone she handed him. He cleared his throat and let his eyes scan the room.
“Hello, I guess Taylor said it all, but I would like to add some things. Of course, I thank everybody who's in this cottage, the cookers, our bestmen, bridesmaid, and of course, you all for coming here today. I thank Taylor for being my gorgeous wife, and the woman who will brighten my days until my death rings. And I know that she does it well. We've known each other for three years now, and I'm not afraid of admitting that it was love at first glance for me. How couldn't I fall in love with this pretty face and shiny eyes? But then, I learnt to know her, and I'm not disappointed. Otherwise, you guess that we wouldn't be here today!”
Some people laughed, the others still smiled.
“We travelled a lot, Taylor and I, and it was during her first trip abroad...”
“First trip, anyway.”
“Yes, first trip... Well, it was during this trip that I let my heart speak to her. It was hard at first, but finally, we did it. Ever since, we walked on the same path in our lives, and even though sometimes we're going to take different ones, we'll always be gathered in the end. She gave me important life lessons, she helped me believe in myself and my capacities, she helped me believe in life, she helped me write songs, whereas I was too shy to do it. She made me, I think, a better man, and I hope it will keep going. If I ever was asked to describe my life with Taylor, I would say that we grew up together.”
A wave of “awww” raised in the room, and once again, everybody applauded. John put the microphone aside, before Roger grabbed it and waved at everybody.
“Hi! My name is Roger, I'm John's bestman, and I would like to officially declare that we can all eat!”
“Oh my, I was sure that he would do that...” Brian sighed with an eyeroll.
The guests stood up and walked up to the buffet, taking a plate from the pile, and serving themselves food. Taylor rested her head on John's shoulder, while Roger made small jumps to the buffet, clutching his stomach. Brian and Freddie laughed, pointing at him and whispering things to each other. Suzy quietly stood up and met Roger at the buffet.
“You're not eating, Mrs Deacon?” John whispered with a smile to his wife, stroking the crook of her neck.
“I am, but I'm waiting for everybody to eat.”
“I see. I'm waiting too” he smiled, closing his eyes and keeping on stroking the crook of her neck. “I remember something you told me, two years ago.”
“Yeah?”
“When I took you to this restaurant, for your twenty-sixth birthday, you told me that the future Mrs Deacon would be really honoured. How does that feel, for real?”
Taylor smiled and chuckled, looking at him.
“I'm honoured. I love this new name!”
“And I love you.”
“And I will love you forever, and after.”
They both smiled and pressed their lips against each other's. Seeing that most of the guests had gone back to their seats with full plates, they stood up and got some food, opening bottle of wines, and enjoying the moment. Suzy and Freddie were chatting about the food and Japan, whereas Brian was rolling his eyes, next to a smiling Roger pointing at John's “sexy cousins”.
Once all the stomachs got full and many bottles got emptied, Roger grabbed the microphone and stood up, much to the newlyweds' surprise. He cleared his throat and lightly tapped on its top, making everybody turn their heads. His face lit up with a smile.
“Hi again, everybody! Before the ball and the wedding cake part begin, Suzy, Freddie, Brian and myself would like to help you digest this delicious buffet, by sharing some memories we have with those two lovebirds, whose marriage we're celebrating today. We did not prepare anything, and they have no clue of what we're going to say either, and honestly, I can't wait to see their reaction!”
Roger laughed and ran a hand through his golden locks. He bypassed John, Taylor, Freddie, and handed the microphone to Suzy, who stood up, holding herself to the back of her chair, so she would not weigh on her ankle. She got a bit nervous, knowing that she had to give up on her cockney accent for her speech.
“Good afternoon everybody, my name is Suzy, I'm Taylor's bridesmaid, it's me who guided you to your seats. I've known Taylor since we were three or four, and we both grew up in Shepherd's Bush, taking care of each other all this time. My personality was quite different from hers, as she was much of a quiet girl, and I was a noisy troublemaker. I remember one day, we were around fourteen, and we went to Hyde Park. It was a sunny day, and we sat on the grass, on a spot where nobody usually go to, and we enjoyed the sunshine, doing absolutely nothing. I felt really uncomfortable, because I used to jump everywhere, playing pranks and all, and I simply could not stand the fact that we were sitting for nothing. Taylor must have guessed it, because she told me 'Susan, if you can't enjoy peace, you can't enjoy life'. At first, I didn't really pay attention to that, I thought that it was quite a crazy thing to say, you know. But in the evening, it made me wonder about a lot of things going in my life, and this has been my motto ever since. This confirms what John said earlier, that Taylor could give life lessons. Whenever I feel too nervous, I just sit or lie down somewhere, and I enjoy peace. I just empty my brain, and I listen to the silence. It might be meaningless to you, but it changed my life, though I'm still a troublemaker!”
Taylor laughed, applauding her friend; then, all the guests imitated her. Suzy handed the microphone to Freddie, who stood up, helping his neighbour sit down. He smiled at the assembly.
“Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeello!” he sang, as if he was on stage. “My name's Freddie, but I don't think we need to introduce ourselves, you all know John and the band, I guess. Anyway! First, I would like to congratulate John and Taylor for their wonderful and beautiful wedding. I admit that I got really emotional at the ceremony, and I thank Taylor for giving me the honour of walking her to the altar! Those two lovebirds are really adorable together, and my heart just brightens when I see them in those wedding outfits! I'm going to tell you about the first time I met Taylor. The band was at the airport, ready to fly to Japan. She was there, and John introduced us, but I knew who she was because he actually mentioned her a lot of times. As our flight was delayed, we had to wait in this huge waiting room, and I talked to the shy and quiet girl sitting among us. We got to know each other, and she surprised me with her very weird habits, and I'm sure that Suzy know what I'm talking about. She told me that she owned a lot of records, but she had never bought a turntable. Actually, she didn't listen to music, she'd rather imagine it, so she never would be disappointed. Fortunately, John bought her one last year.”
Some guests smiled, and the newlyweds chuckled.
“Recently, I've been reading a poem by John Keats, and one of the lines reminded me of her. It said 'Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter'. It made me wonder if Taylor was the reincarnation of John Keats. Now, let's move on to John. Ah, my bandmate, my friend, my co-worker. We've shared so many memories that it would be impossible to pick one. I'm so glad to have him in the band. He plays the bass wonderfully, and he's one of the most important elements of our music. His songwriting is absolutely mindblowing. As I have nothing more to say, I'm giving the microphone to Brian. Thank you.”
The guests clapped their hands, and Freddie sat down again, being kissed on the cheek by the bride. The tall figure of Queen's guitarist stood up. Brian ran a hand through his dark curls, shaking them lightly.
“Hello, my name is Brian, but as Freddie said, it's not necessary to introduce ourselves, you all know who we are, I guess. Unfortunately, I didn't live many things with Taylor, but I sincerely hope that it's going to be fixed, as I consider her as a member of the Queen family. She's our photographer, and a really good one on top of that. When she's around, we know that we're never going to be bored. She's a jewel, really. So, I think I'm going to talk about John in particular. I'm going to repeat what Freddie said, because it's the truth, we're glad to have him with us, and I personally think that without him, Queen would never be this good, and we would never have this lovely sound of ours. He's a very intelligent guy, and he can be really funny, those are two reasons why I love him so much! He built our great Deacy Amp, and it's the best amp I ever worked on! Let's tell a memory, now. Three years ago, when we thought we had finished recording A Night at the Opera, Freddie told us that we had to write three or four more songs to fill the album. Rog presented his... uh... weird song, and Freddie came up with Seaside Rendezvous. That's when we discovered that John actually wrote songs. It's true that we never thought that he could write songs, because he was always this shy and quiet in the studio, we didn't expect that. And this day, he showed us the lyrics to You're My Best Friend. I don't know about Freddie and Rog, but it blew my mind. John left his shyness behind him, and he stood up, telling us what chords to play, deciding with us how Roger should play his drums, and how Freddie should sing. He was our conductor, and it was extremely pleasant to see him like that. It was John. The very artistic side of him came up at this moment, and it happened for Spread Your Wings too, last year. John really is one of the greatest band members of all time, and unfortunately, we don't show it to him the way we should.”
While everybody was applauding Brian, John looked down, feeling tears coming to his eyes. Taylor guessed it immediately and wrapped an arm around his shoulders. She kissed his cheek, pressing her forehead against his temple.
“Bri's right, sweetheart!”
John stood up after he briefly kissed her lips, and walked up to Brian to hug him tight. Brian chuckled and wrapped his arms around his friend, patting his back. Roger discreetly took the microphone, smiling at the two. He cleared his throat, and they sat.
“Hello again, you already know my name, so I won't say it again. Before I start, I would like to congratulate John and Taylor once again for their wedding. I knew from the start that John was falling in love, and of course, my beautiful blue eyes weren't wrong! I've been glad to welcome Taylor among our circle of friends, and as Bri said, she's a part of the Queen family! I think that Taylor is an awesome lady, very energic and always ready to go on an adventure. It's always great and reassuring in a certain way to have her around. I have a memory to share about John, now. If you expect me to make you get emotional like Suzy, Freddie and Bri did, well... You're at the wrong door. I remember one night, we were at a party with John and Freddie, as Brian was sick. We drank a bit...”
He scratched his golden hair and a smirk appeared on his face.
“Okay, we drank a lot... As the club we were at closed, we had a walk in the neighbourhood, and Freddie pointed at the open window of a house. We walked past it, and three people were sitting at a table behind it. John started to laugh, he ran to the window, pulled down his jeans and showed his... chair area. Never had I imagined that he could do such a thing. Our quiet and wise John! But don't worry, I joined him almost immediately, and I showed the other side. I remember how those people reacted: they blushed, and one of the girls spat her mashed potatoes. What an idea to eat mashed potatoes during the night!”
The newlyweds and their friends laughed out loud, whereas some members of John's family looked down in embarrassment. Roger clutched his stomach, and cleared his throat.
“I told you that I would spoil your wedding party in any way! I did, that's what I promised!”
“Alright, Rog, you win.”
“You owe me five bucks.”
John laughed, tilting his head back lightly. Roger looked at the assembly.
“Well, I'm done with the memories. I saw the DJ coming, so I guess that it's time for the ball to begin! And as it's supposed to happen, the newlyweds have to lead the march!”
Everybody clapped their hands. John and Taylor entwined their fingers and stood up, smiling at the guests. They bypassed the table, whistled at by their friends. They elegantly walked up to the dancefloor, and John raised his thumb to the disc-jokey. He tenderly rested his right hand on Taylor's waist, holding her hand with the other. Her lovely eyes landed on his and did not leave. Her green eyes were shiny, a bit wet with tears of joy; her lips were stretched into a lovingly smile, and only John could really guess how much love she put into it.
The disc-jokey carefully put down a record on his turntable, playing one track. All the guests turned to the newlyweds, eager to discover what song they chose to open the ball. Did they choose a very romantic song? Did they choose a traditional song? Did they choose an exotic song?
The melody of keyboard notes sounded into the whole room, and the three other members of Queen widened their eyes. Freddie guffawed and tilted his head back, covering his laughing lips with his long fingers.
“Ooh, you make me live, whatever this world can give to me, it's you, you're all I see!Ooh, you make me live now honey!Ooh, you make me live!”
Suddenly, John and Taylor let go of each other, only holding hands. They started to dance happily, jumping on their feet and letting their heels knock on the wooden floor. Freddie discreetly took the microphone on the table and walked up to the middle of the room, making sure that they did not see him. He caught a deep breath and sang in the microphone, much to everybody's surprise.
“I've been wandering round, but I still come back to you, in rain or shine you've stood by me girl, I'm happy at home, you're my best friend!”
The newlyweds jumped and spun round, before smiling widely, clapping their hands. They kept dancing, sometimes including Freddie in their dance. When the song ended, everybody applauded, and Taylor tightly hugged the singer.
“You crazy lad! I love you!”
“I love you too, my dear! But you should said that to John instead.”
“Oh, don't worry, I will say it to him so often that he'll wish that he could be deaf!”
“John? Never!”
Taylor laughed and kissed Freddie's cheek, before stretching her hand to John, who tenderly took it. Freddie invited everybody on the dancefloor, and everybody stood up, even Suzy. They danced for an hour or two, trying to digest the buffet. In the middle of the ball, the disc-jokey played Teo Torriatte, and a smile grew bigger on the bride's cheeks. Aside from You're My Best Friend and Spread Your Wings, it was her favourite Queen song. She rested her head on John's chest, holding his hand and putting a hand on his shoulder. As they started to dance slowly, spinning round, John put his hand between her kidneys, gently pulling her closer. She smiled and cringed at the same time.
“Ouch.”
“Oh, did I hurt you, darling? I'm sorry.”
“My kidneys hurt a bit since we got to the city hall. But it must be nervous. Nothing too important.”
“I hope so.”
He rested his chin on the top of her head, closing his eyes and leading the dance. Taylor's body shuddered, and it made him grin.
“How comes that you're in that state?”
“What state?”
“You're shuddering.”
“Oh, it's the song. I love it so much, you have no idea.”
“Freddie is a genius.”
“But you are too.”
“Perhaps, but I didn't write Bohemian Rhapsody.”
“Who cares?”
She lightly pulled away, staring into his eyes.
“Nobody's more of a genius to me than you.”
“Thank you, honey.”
They smiled at each other and shared a tender kiss, making people around them grin, sometimes looking at them with a gleam of jealousy in their eyes. After a while, Suzy's voice sounded in the room, announcing the arrival of the wedding cake. She called the newlyweds to gather near the buffet table. They did, walking hand in hand. The lights went off, and two cookers came into the room, carrying a huge wedding cake with burning heart-shaped candles in the sides. At the top, there was a perfect imitation of Taylor and John holding hands.
John shed a tear at the sight of the cake, and he lightly squeezed his wife's hand. She chuckled and rested her head on his shoulder, sobbing too. The cookers put down the cake on the table before them, lighting up their faces. Roger came up after them, and handed them a big knife to cut it. They both grabbed the knife, and cut it into many pieces, helped by the cookers. Once the cake was cut, Taylor grabbed a big bottle of Moët & Chandon, popped the cork, and poured the champagne in the glass on top of the glass pyramide. Even when it got full, she kept pouring the champagne in it, as the overflowing beverage filled the bottom glasses one by one.
Everybody took a piece of cake and a glass of champagne, and they had a toast. As they started to eat, Lilian – John's mother – stood up, ran up to Roger, who still was standing at the buffet, and whispered something to him. He nodded and handed her the microphone. She went back to her seat but did not sit. She gently tapped on the top of the microphone, making everybody stop talking and turning to her.
“John” she started, making her son smile widely “I wanted to congratulate you for your wedding. As I told you when I met Taylor, she's the woman you always needed, who is your best friend, a motherly figure, and your lover. Words could never describe how happy I feel right now, seeing you at this table, wearing this suit, matching the gorgeous dress of a gorgeous woman. I feel incredibly proud of you, and it grows every single day. I'm proud of all the things you achieve, I'm proud of your career, and I'm sure that your father would have been proud as well. He must be up there, in Heaven.”
John nodded and his lips trembled, as Lilian mentioned his father. Taylor wrapped an arm around his shoulders, kissing his cheek and squeezing his hand.
“And Taylor” she smiled, making the bride turn to her, “I would like to thank you for making my son happy. Never have I seen him in full bloom like this. And of course, welcome to the Deacon family.”
Taylor grinned and thanked Lilian, withotu letting go of a sobbing John. Brian patted his shoulder, whispering something to him. John nodded and lifted up his chin, staring at her mother tenderly.
“Thank you, mum. I'm proud of being your son.”
Lilian smiled and gave the microphone back to Roger, through a wave of applause. She sat down and ate her piece of cake.
The music stopped, and the disc-jokey put back his records into their sleeves, slipping them into bags. John walked up to him to thank him, while Taylor was saying goodbye to the guests, thanking them for coming. Suzy and Roger were in the next room, gathering all the presents the newlyweds received and opened, throwing away the gift wraps. Freddie was helping a waiter to clean the buffet, and Brian was bringing dishes from the guests tables to the kitchen.
Suzy and Roger brought all the presents to the limo, where the newlyweds' suitcases had been put. They knew that the limo would bring them to the airport, before going to John's house, where Suzy and Brian would wait for it. Brian had been asked to take care of Malo, and Freddie got a bit jealous, since he was fond of cats.
Once everybody was gone, Suzy took Taylor to a room, in which she had brought the bride's changing clothes. Roger took John into another. Suzy helped her friend remove the wedding dress, carefully putting it into its special bag. She removed Taylor's large braided bun and combed her long hair into a new braid, this time starting above her right ear, making it fall on her shoulder. She removed the bride's makeup, and put away everything into a bag. Taylor changed her clothes, wearing a knee-length red dress, with long sleeves. She put on red ballerinas and turned to Suzy.
“Thank ya for all the things you did today. Yer the best bridesmaid ever!”
“No need to thank me. 'Twas a pleasure. Let's go, now, John's waitin'.”
Taylor nodded and grabbed a few things to help Suzy, and they walked out of the cottage. The white limo was waiting outside, and John was standing beside it, wearing a long-sleeved black shirt, with its three top buttons undone. He was wearing dark jeans and trainers, which was quite different from the outfit he was wearing a few moments earlier. He was talking to Freddie, who was making him repeat something she could not hear.
Freddie stepped aside, letting Brian stand next to John.
“Be safe during your trip, huh?” Brian whispered to his friend, smiling. “You'll tell us what it was like!”
“Of course, don't worry, Bri” John chuckled. “You won't need a new bassist hopefully.”
“Oh, if you were to die, the band would split.”
“Don't say such things. Anyway, we have to go now. Thank you for everything, Bri. You're an incredible friend.”
“How about Freddie and Rog?”
“They are too!”
Both chuckled, and hugged friendly. Next to them, Taylor was kissing Roger on the cheek, hugging him too, and thanking him so sincerely that it made him blush. After that, she said goodbye to Freddie, dancing a bit with him.
“We'll miss you” the singer smiled “so you'd better be back soon!”
“Oh, in that case... Let's move, John!”
The group laughed, and Taylor hugged Suzy so tightly that she nearly broke her spine. Suzy shed a tear and immediately wiped it off. Taylor kissed her briefly on the lips.
“Our good ol' friendship kiss, huh?”
“Always!”
They laughed and hugged once again. Meanwhile, John was saying goodbye to his best friends and bandmates, and Roger stopped him by resting a hand on his shoulder.
“D'you have the tickets?”
John patted his back pocket, pouting.
“I do!”
“The two of them?”
John checked again and nodded.
“Alright, go to your crazy honeymoon, now! Oh, by the way, don't fuck too much, you'll hurt your dingdong.”
“Shut up, Rog!”
Brian rolled his eyes, chuckling. Once they all said their good-byes, Taylor walked up to John and took his hand. The driver of the limo opened the door for them, and they waved at one another, cheering. John was the first to get in the car, soon followed by Taylor.
The driver closed the door and quickly went back to the driver's seat. He started up the limo and drove away. Taylor sighed happily, resting her head on John's shoulder. She closed her eyes and grinned, as she felt John's hand stroking her knee.
“Our wedding was perfect” she whispered.
“Oh yes, it was! If only we could do this everyday!”
Taylor chuckled and opened her eyes, looking into John's. She frowned lightly, and her smile grew bigger.
“By the way, where are you taking us for our honeymoon?”
John laughed and raised his eyebrows.
“Watashitachiha Nihon ni narudarou.”
“What does that mean?”
John looked down briefly, before wrapping an arm around her, pulling her closer to him. Waiting for an answer, she rested her head on his shoulder again, but staring at him. When he opened his mouth, her heart leapt inside her chest.
“We're going to Japan.”
