The Name

Taylor wiped her feet on the doormat, a pile of papers under her arm. She pushed the front door and got inside the house. She put down the papers on the shoe cabinet and removed her handbag from her shoulders, resting it on top of the pile. She bent with difficulty to take off her shoes, due to her growing stomach. She was not six months pregnant, and she was just coming back from the hospital for a regular checkup. According to the doctors, the baby was perfectly healthy.

She hung her jacket to the coat rack and took a look in the living room, where she found John eating a bowl of peanuts, watching a film, with Malo sleeping beside him. He turned his head and smiled widely.

“And here's my princess!”

John stood up and walked up to her, carefully hugging her. He pecked her on the lips a few times before kneeling down and kissing her stomach, giving it a stroke.

“Hello, second love of my life!”

Taylor chuckled and helped him up. He tenderly kissed her hair and cupped her face with his hands.

“So, what did the doctors say? Did it go well?”

“Perfectly well. Our baby is perfectly healthy, and I'll be able to give birth normally! No need to worry for the moment.”

“Great! I have something to show you, do you have a minute?”

“I must cook for us.”

We will cook. Cooking is not your role. And no need to hurry, huh?”

“I guess.”

John smiled and kissed her tenderly, slowly taking her hand and locking their fingers together. With a wink, he brought her in the corridor, leading her to the door of a room near the staircase. It was bigger than the empty room, and like it before, it was not used at all. John had always thought he would need a big house to put all his stuff in, but it looked like he saw a bit too large for this one.

John covered Taylor's eyes with his hands, asking her if she could see anything. She shook her head and giggled, a bit nervous about what she was going to be shown. He unlocked the door and pushed it open, so they both could get in. Her eyes still covered, she walked up to the middle of the room, following John's instructions.

“Okay. I'm going to remove my hands from your eyes, but don't open them yet, alright?”

“Alright. I hope this is not one of your silly jokes, huh?”

“Nope! I'm just going to close the door.”

As he said, he removed his hand from her eyes, which she kept closed with a wide grin. He closed the door and stood there, opening his arms.

“Okay, you can look now!”

Taylor opened her eyelids and her jaw dropped. She was in the middle of a baby room. The walls had been painted white with a large green band crossing each one of them There was a black wooden bed against the right wall, next to a brown armchair, stuck in the corner. Against the left wall stood a wooden chest of drawers for the baby's clothes, on which a silver frame containing a picture of John and Taylor was rested. Next to it was a white teddy bear and a white lamp. A box of toys was not far from it, and next to the door was the baby-changing table. On the brown wooden floor was a round green carpet, with black patterns on it. The backside of the door was green, and Taylor could read a small writing at the top of it, in a darker shade of green. It said “With love, from Brian.”

She could not believe it. She started to cry, hugging John and kissing his neck. He was chuckling, trying to refrain from squeezing her because of her belly. She kissed him on the lips and let her eyes scan the room again.

“Goddammit... When did you have time doing all that?”

“When you were at hospital, when you had your kidney removed. With all the doctors appointments you had, Brian and me finished the last things. What do you think of it?”

“This is purely great” she whispered. “It's... perfect.”

She wiped her tears and shrugged, moving her hands. It was incredible. Her eyes stared at John for a minute, and she reached out her arm. John took her hand and got closer, being surprised when she rested his on her stomach.

“There's something I have to tell you” she whispered. “Let's sit.”

“What is it? Is it serious? Are you ill again?” John started to worry.

“No, don't worry about that. It's about the baby. The doctor who did the ultrasound today accidentally told me the gender of the baby. I know what it is, then. Do you want to know it now, or do you prefer waiting for the delivery?”

“Oh” he said, before hesitating for a minute. “Tell me. Is it a boy? A girl?”

Taylor giggled and took his hands, blushing heavily. He was staring at her so intensively, as if he was afraid of missing any move that would reveal the gender of his child. He gulped, as she started to smile even wider.

“It's a...”

She moved her lips to form the letter “g”.

“Boy.”

What a plot twist.

John's eyes widened, and his lips stretched into a broad grin.

“It's a... a boy?”

“It's a boy.”

“Oh gosh.”

John burst into tears of joy, hugging Taylor and stroking her hair. She laughed, feeling his shoulders shivering. She clenched her fingers over the fabric of his shirt, closing her eyes and trying to imagine what their son would look like.

After a while, he stood up and wiped his eyes with the back of his hands. He stared at the ceiling for a second, overwhelmed by those wonderful news.

“We should start to think about a name, don't you think?”

“Do you already have some in mind?”

“I think I do.”

Taylor giggled and took John's hand, leading him to the armchair in the corner. He sat and stuck his knees against each other so she could sit on his lap. She did, wrapping her arms around his neck. She kissed his cheek and waited for him to tell her the names he thought about.

“I thought about Keith, Robert, Luke, Joshua, Cameron...” John listed.

“Oh, we have Robert in common.”

“Do we?” he laughed. “And what are the others you have in mind?”

John, Brian, Roger, Freddie...”

“Wait, that's Queen you mentioned!”

“I know! But you know that I didn't have a lot of good experiences with men in my life, except you of course. John will be hard, perhaps, because that's also your name. And for the other three, it's simply because I also owe them so much.”

“And Robert? What does that stand for?”

“Robert Plant.”

They laughed and John shook his head.

“Obviously! Let's call him Robert Lemon Deacon!”

“No, please, no!”

She burst out laughing and poked the tip of his nose, while he was tenderly stroking her stomach, pulling up her t-shirt to stroke her skin directly. She lightly jumped at his touch but immediately smirked.

John sniffed and looked up.

“So, how are we calling him?”

“Since we have Robert in common, I guess we could name him like that, so everybody's happy. Would you like to add a middle name?”

“Mmh, I don't know.”

“I would like to add this of one of your bandmates” Taylor insisted. “We only have to choose which.”

“Let's take a hat and write their names on small pieces of paper. We'll pick one randomly.”

“Okay.”

She stood up and walked up to the living room, looking for a sheet of paper. Meanwhile, John was in the bedroom, trying to remember where he had put his white cap. He got it on the top of his wardrobe and walked back to the baby's room. Taylor had written each name several times on the paper and was cutting it into many pieces, folding each in two. She took them all and brought them to the baby's room, pouring the whole in John's cap. He shook it a bit, staring into her eyes.

He stopped and handed it to Taylor. She put her hand above it and made it spin a few times, when he suddenly said “stop”. She dipped her hand in the cap and took out one paper. With trembling hands, she unfolded it and read the name loud.

Brian.”

John smiled at her and nodded.

Robert Brian Deacon.”
