Prologue

Lily's POV:

I woke up this morning to the sound of a hummingbird standing on my windowsill. I smiled as I noticed how colorful his feathers are. Almost like a rainbow; which made me want to touch it, stroke his little head but I knew better. As soon as I would approach it, it would fly away scared of me even though I wouldn't even think of hurting this amazing little creature.

I got up and went to ready myself for the day. It would be another long, lonely, boring day. Yes, you heard right a lonely day. The thing is, I keep to myself and have big trust issues, which make it hard for me to have friends. I'm not whining, I'm good being all by myself it doesn't hurt.

"Lily!" I heard my mom call my name so I rush down to the kitchen to have breakfast.

"Good morning mom." I pecked her cheek and sat in my usual seat, hoping she hadn't noticed I had snuck out last night. She would kill me if she knew.

My mom, Viviane, used to be very beautiful, still is but not as much. Having to raise three kids on her own required two jobs and it wore her out. She stopped taking care of herself, even if she wanted to, she didn't have the time for it anymore.

I was looking at her blond curly hair and green hazel eyes thinking of the last time she had gone out and had fun...a long time ago. She put a cup of milk in front of me and went back to make her coffee.

Maybe she didn't suspect anything after all.

"Where were you last night?" So much for being off the hook. "And don't say in bed because I know you weren't there, nor were you on the porch I checked there also." her tone was serious and accusing. I was caught red handed.

I didn't know what to say, I didn't want to lie to her but I couldn't tell her where I had been, she might have a heart attack! Luckily, I didn't have to say anything because provided me with the perfect scapegoat.

"Are you sneaking around to see some boy?" She accused. "You have to be honest! And I think I have the right to know where my daughter hangs out and with whom".

I looked down at the table. Shame filling my face. "Yes mom, I've been with a boy." I looked back at her with a sad smile. "He's just a friend and he recently lost his father. Since I've already been through this, I thought I could be there for him. I'm sorry." My pleading eyes did the trick.

Oh, god what a good liar I've become!

Before we could talk more on the conversation, I noticed the time."I'm going to be late for school." I stood up and collected my lunch bag off of the counter. "Don't wait up I have a group study after school." I called over my shoulder rushing out of the kitchen.

Here we go again another lie.

I felt guilty but I couldn't tell her I had been hanging out at the graveyard lately. She'd skin me alive.

On my way to school, I had an odd feeling of someone watching me. It's been a feeling I've felt for the past couple weeks now. At first it didn't bother me, but now it was becoming creepy.

I made it to school with enough time to head to my locker before the first bell rung. I went to my first class and waited for my English teacher to come; I loved this class because we had lots of writing sessions. It was one of the many things I loved to do. I really love to write stories and poetry.

The teacher finally came in followed by a kid I never saw before. He must be new, yet he seemed familiar to me. He was cute though, tall, brown hair with green eyes; he had high cheekbones and full lips, the kind you like to kiss.

Oh my, what am I thinking about! And why am I staring? I immediately looked away even though it was hard not to look into those compelling eyes.

"Good morning class, this is Derek, he's a new, yet returning student, be nice and appropriate." I heard the teacher say as he handed Derek a book and told him to sit wherever he wanted.

Derek ended up taking the empty seat next to me. I gave him a polite smile as a greeting before focusing on the lecture of the day.

As the day went on, I noticed that Derek was in almost all of my classes and he always sat next to me even when there were other seats available. The weird part of it is that he never talked to me. No hi, how are you doing. Not even a smart remark about the teachers.

After school, I took the road that leads to the woods. I can reach the cemetery from there. It was too risky to sneak at night now that my mom was onto me. I'll have to do my best and go during the day.

I was walking slowly through the woods, enjoying the little sun that peeked through the trees and the wind, the scent of trees was refreshing and reminded me of the times I came here with my father and older brother Mark.

Mark used to come here to learn how to fight. Father always said it was important for him to know how to defend himself. Mark didn't like it at first, but he did it anyway to please our father. He even became good at martial arts.

When my father died, Mark couldn't bear with the pain, he felt a great emptiness and all he wanted to do was get away. He left to go to Europe for college and barely came to visit anymore. It was sad but we didn't argue with him about it. He was coping his own way, just as I was by spending a great amount of time by my father's tomb every day.

There was a sudden change in the air that put me on alert. Something wasn't right. Something was wrong.

Run! You don't want to stay here any longer.

I wasn't sure what was happening, I just knew I had to get out of these woods and fast. Hopefully it was safer near my father's grave.
