Chapter 6: wrong question
Derek's POV:
We were in English class when I looked over at Lily to see her drowned in what she was writing. I had heard from other students that she was smart and had a lot of imagination but I didn't know she liked to write that much.
I smiled as I tried to peek at what she was writing and she just pushed me away and hid her paper with both arms.
"Sorry! Not done yet you can't read" she grinned and went back to her writing.
I chuckled and tried to write something myself but I just had nothing in mind except Lily, maybe I should write about her but I was sure she would think it was lame. I sighed and started doodling on my paper not really in the mood to think of anything.
My phone buzzed twice in my pocket and I knew it was Kellen, I excused myself and walked out of the classroom, and went to the empty hallway to call him back.
"What's up?" I said as soon as he answered.
"Are you with Lily?"
"Yeah, but she's in class and I came out to talk to you." He said nothing and it worried me a bit. I didn't like it when Kellen called while I was in class and hated it when he was silent like that.
"Kellen? What's wrong? Spill it; I'm sure I can take it."
"I...um... Well" he stuttered without really saying anything and I was losing my patience!
"Kellen! Just say it for god's sake!"
"I need you to come to the mansion now. Can you do that? We need to talk. It's important".
I sighed and hung up. I was walking straight to the front doors when I felt a small soft hand grab my wrist. I looked back knowing it was Lily and smiled at her.
"What are you doing out here beautiful?"
"No Derek. Wrong question. What are you doing leaving school grounds when the day just started?" she raised an eyebrow at me and crossed her arms around her chest. She looked so cute yet so serious.
I chuckled and shrugged "I have some things to do".
"So you were leaving without telling me?"
"Lily please, it's important I have to leave right now. I was about to text you. I'm sorry we will discuss it later".
"No Derek! I'm not done here!"
I sighed, I didn't want to hurt her but I really was in a hurry, I pulled her to me giving her a tight hug. "I'll see you later, I promise."
I left without giving her time to protest more than that. I knew I would regret it later, and she might stop talking to me, but Kellen sounded off and I had a bad feeling. I drove to the mansion he bought recently and parked the car in the garage before making my way upstairs. He was nowhere to be seen, so I went down to the cellar and heard a muffled cry.
I hurried downstairs as quietly as possible and once there I looked around to make sure Kellen was okay. Kellen was standing crossed arms facing away from me and he was looking at something or might I say, someone. I followed his gaze and saw a tied-up young man who was struggling to get free.
I remained where I was for a while just staring at the man. He looked so familiar but I couldn't place him. Kellen snapped me out of my thoughts by hitting the man's leg causing him to give a struggled cry. I finally approached them still unsure of who he was and why he was here.
"What's going on?" I asked Kellen without glancing away from the man's face. His eyes were the color of clovers, just like...
"You know him, Derek? Ever seen him before?"
I shook my head. "He looks familiar but I don't know him. Who is he? And why are you torturing him?"
"He won't tell me who sent him."
I cocked an eyebrow "sent him here? For what?"
"Ask him" Kellen leaned on the wall and looked at his prisoner with a menacing glare.
I rolled my eyes at Kellen, he liked playing games and he liked pretending to be in control of everything. It even made me think this was a game, but the fact that the man had bruises all over his body with deep injuries told a different story. He wouldn't take it so far if it were just another game of his.
I cleared my throat and got closer "who are you?" I spoke with a normal tone, not serious nor demanding, I even sounded bored.
The man in front of me just laughed and shook his head "that's your protégé?" he asked Kellen who didn't answer and kept glaring at him.
I chuckled "see? I told you I wasn't good enough!" I said sarcastically to Kellen facing him.
When I looked back at the captive, my eyes were violet, pure glowing violet and it seemed to have shaken him because he tried to take a step backward but couldn't due to the chains hanging from the ceiling.
"Now" I smiled and took a step closer "Who are you?"
"I'm the one who's going to end your days," he said smirking.
I looked at him up and down "I'd like to watch you doing it since you're chained like a dog".
His smirk left his face and I thought I saw something dark flicker in his eyes, I was focusing on trying to read his expression that I didn't see him jump and wrap his legs around my neck locking them in a way to snap my neck. I growled and gripped both his legs parting them from my neck. I was thankful for all that training Kellen made me do every day.
I easily freed my neck and broke one of his legs pushing him so he slammed against the wall behind him and came back flying to me. He let out an agonizing and ear-piercing cry.
I didn't feel the need to threaten him; I knew he got the message.
"Who are you? And what are you doing here?" this time my tone was imposing and threatening.
"Mark. My name is Mark," he said wincing.
Lily's POV:
How could he!? I was furious! Never in my whole life, I've been treated like that. If Mark were here he would have killed the...
"Lily?" Mr. Rodrigo called my name and snapped me out of my reveries.
"yes, Mr. Rodrigo?"
"You weren't listening, were you? Ahhh. What is the Spanish word of the verb eat?"
"comer" I said and rolled my eyes.
He sighed a bit disappointed that I got it right and went back to his lesson.
The day was disturbingly long and boring. I thought about calling Derek to make sure he was okay but then remembered what he did this morning and changed my mind.
When I got home, I saw my mom sitting on the sofa and looking through old photos. I sat next to her and looked at her.
"Have you been crying, mom?"
"Oh sweetie, I didn't notice you were here" she wiped her tears away and looked at me "how was your day?"
"Mommy, what's wrong?" I asked her very concerned now. "Is Marc okay?"
"I'm fine baby, and your brother is just fine. I spoke to him last night he was studying for his exam." She stroked my cheek and looked back at the pictures.
I thought about speaking again but I voted against it. I didn't want to pressure her. I hugged her and stayed close for a while before she pulled away and started arranging the pictures back in her boxes. She looked at me and gave me a reassuring smile but her expression totally changed when her eyes sat on my necklace. Derek's stone.
"Where did you get that Lily?" she pointed at my stone with a disgusted look in her eyes.
I frowned forgetting I had put it back on during lunch break so I don't lose it. "It's just a necklace mom why are you looking at me as if I was an Alien?"
"It's not just a necklace Lily, this is a precious stone that probably has a name! Where did you get it?" she snapped sounding mad and scared at the same time.
I was confused by her reaction and I tried to calm her "Derek gave it to me mom. Why are you so worked up over one stupid stone?"
"Again, it's not just a stupid stone for God Sake! Do you even know the name of the stone?" she sounded alarmed.
I was puzzled, "Mom...I know it's called a Zerix"
"You don't know what it is, do you? You have no clue! God! Lily please I beg you... I beg you Lily to give him back this stone. We don't need this in our lives and you can't see him anymore!"
And here we go! My mom is babbling which means she knows everything about this stone and about its meaning.
"I will give it back to him mom. But don't you ever think that I'll stop seeing him. I like him...and he likes me and he's perfect for me!" I hadn't realized the truth to those words before actually saying them. I smiled as recognition spread in my heart.
"Lily...you are not seeing him again! He is dangerous Lily!"
"Really? How do you know? You've seen him twice!"
"I don't need to see him more than that to decide whether he's good for you or not".
Damn, she is stubborn! I gave her an exasperated sigh "Fine!"
I looked around the living room wondering where my little sister was. The house was too quiet without her. "Where is Marianne?"
My mom pointed to the backyard "She's playing in her treehouse with her friends."
I nodded getting up, I wanted to ask her about Kellen but didn't want to upset her further. She already looked frustrated enough.
I went to my room and shut the door locking it. I was so frustrated at her right now! If she knew something, why didn't she just say it? Why just tell me to stay away from him instead of telling me the truth? I threw my books on the floor and groaned as I plumped myself on my bed, my face in my pillow to muffle my cries.
Later that day, I woke up to the sound of my phone ringing. I saw Derek's picture on the screen and shoved it aside. I couldn't take any more crap for the day. I took a shower and did my homework before going back to sleep not even bothering with dinner.
Viviane's POV (lily's Mother):
I couldn't believe Derek was a Dragon. I couldn't let her see him again! She won't ruin her life as I ruined mine. I was frustrated, why would she have to live the same fate as I did?
I paced the living room back and forth; I had to think of something. "No dragon would take another life from my family" I shook my head and sat down.
I took the phone and decided to call Kellen.
"Hello?" His voice sent shivers down my spine but good shivers. I took a deep breath.
"Hi, Kellen. It's me"
"Viviane? Is everything okay?"
"No Kellen! You killed my husband! And now Derek is after my daughter!"
"I fought for you Viviane, and I was defending myself."
"I don't care! You killed a soul and lost me forever. But that's not why I'm calling. Tell Derek to stay away from my daughter you hear me, Kellen?"
"Lily is his mate; he can't just stay away from her! Remember when you left me? Remember what happened to me? I won't let that happen to him. Even if you try, you can't keep them apart. You'll have to kill him to keep them apart!"
"Then that's what I'll do!" I hung up on his nose and slammed the phone on the wall.
